      I agree, pronouns has always been a normal everyday thing and I like that its almost as if they patched a "normal game and QoL feature that we only got the chance to add now" and not make it some sort of trendy and glorified personality shtick marketed for pride month.

    • @moon-jl1sp
      @moon-jl1sp 2 года назад +39

      If they waited until pride month, I wouldn't have any problems just because in my mind June is a month to spread awareness and educate others about LGBTQ issues, as well as celebrate the community. But I definitely appreciate that they didn't wait since I know it's a month that's kind of taken advantage of by big brands. It shows that they really do care and want us to feel more comfortable as soon as possible

    One thing I have always loved about you is just how seamlessly you refer to your LGBTQ+ sims. You never trip up calling Blake "him" or "her". I am 43 and sadly didn't grow up with the idea of choosing pronouns, and so it's something I still struggle with. Don't get me wrong, I'll never stop trying to be better, but thanks for showing us fellow allies the best way to be one! And to those who really needed this update, I am so very happy for you! I am glad you are being recognized.

      Wendy, I have the same problem. I found practicing talking about them to my husband helps! I also found that referring to most everyone using they/them also helps as well. I'm 58 with a trans niece. The struggle is real. In my case it's just saying she with everyone but my Mom and her husband, aged 80 and 66, but it gets confusing at times. • @lucierussell337
      @lucierussell337 2 года назад +11

      If I understood the second to last phrase correctly, I think I can explain it within reason. It's that person's gameplay it won't effect anyone else's if they choose to be a transphobe you don't have to know about it. The game is for everyone to play whether you are apart of the lgbtqia+ community, or you are disabled, or even if you are a transphobe. The game was made for everyone to enjoy. Also just because a person may not except pronouns does not make them homophobic. Its a new concept that maybe they don't understand while they still support those in the community. My mum is bisexual and she herself does not understand the concept of pronouns, so it's irrelevant in this case to being homophobic.

    • @twylenb
      @twylenb 2 года назад +4

      @@lucierussell337 Since you don't seem to know, you aren't talking about homophobia. You are talking about transphobia. Homophobia is a hate, fear, or aversion of homosexuality, which is not what being trans is. Transgender is the term for anyone who does not feel like they fully identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. Transphobia is the fear, hate, or aversion against trans people.
      The issue here is, if someone has an aversion to neopronoun or using gender neutral pronouns, that is an aversion meaning phobia. It is an aspect of being trans that one refuses to understand or accept. Either one understands it, accepts it, or is phobic of it. We have heard these statements of empty allyship before. "I 'accept' you, but I'm not going to do the thing (that makes you feel safe in your skin) because it's (insert shitty excuse)."
      It's another thing if you are trying, and make a slip up ever so often, but then immediately rectify it when you notice, that's okay. It's just like slipping up and calling someone the wrong name, but you apologized and keep moving on, trying to do it less often. Eventually it will become habit and easy to do. There is no excuse to refuse respecting other people.

    interesting. my language (portuguese) doesn't have neutral pronouns for every category (for exemple, we have isso and aquilo for demonstratives, but it sounds like objetification, like the pronoun it in english). i wonder what they'll do since it still is a very discussed topic. when people have good knowledge of the topic, they use "ile" or "elu". the hard part is that every noun in portuguese is gendered and marked (exemple: ela é bonita - she is pretty / ele é bonito - he is pretty / one neutral debated option: elu/ile é bonite - they are pretty / they could change the other to turn into more neutral requiring only the pronoun: elu/ile é uma pessoa bonita - they are a pretty person - since pretty has to match person which is feminine by default for men/women/others - there's the additional work of having to know how to use the grammar and sintax to neutralize the gender - making it agree with another thing, that has a fixed gender, instead of the person in question), very few exceptions. i think for most latin languages the best solution will be "he/she/custom"

But for those who do have gendered pronouns in their language I do agree with you.

      That's kinda an issue for most slavic languages (and I believe also Japanese) - Polish being actually the hardest to do. However what they will need to do is just implement whole language into the game and automatically applicate it to specific words and rewrite all the texts. So they can just write main part of the word + then add the adapted ending/suffix of the word that can be customised.
      It will give us way more boxes to fill when customising the pronouns, but it should be possible.
      And like with English most of us will get "he", "she" and maybe "them/it" and leave the rest to the users.
      When it comes to the pronouns themselves - there are some new ways linguist try to find gender-inclusive ways of speaking. They do sound very unnatural obviously, but we will see in the future. I think some people use adapted versions for "it" and "them" when the classic pronouns don't work for them.
      For example in Polish "I did" would change between pronouns:
      - male - zrobiłem
      - female - zrobiłam
      - plural male - zrobiliśmy
      - plural non-male - zrobiłyśmy
      So as you can see you could just have "zrobi" and then just add specific suffix.
      The issue in Polish is that there is no non-binary "I", you can talk about "it" as someone else (like a child or chair). But there is no traditional way of speaking about yourself. So in this case person would have to either make custom suffix or use one of the other (for some linguists and people "zrobiłom" would work for example).
      Good about it is that most text in Sims 4 are written in third person. So like "Kayla Sims invited you to the party" or for our Sims: "Your Sim Kayla found a frog, they also found mysterious box". And those pronouns are actually way easier to customise.
      Also I demonstrated a way to actually avoid any pronouns in the game as well - by using "Sim Kayla" - you actually can just use male version of the verbs, because the word "Sim" like "Human" is male - gendered at least in Polish.

    In german we have they/them pronouns, so it would be no problem to add them to the sims. There are called dey/deren ... kind of copied, cause they and dey sound the same to germans. Sadly in germany most of the people dont know or even ignore those pronouns. So I'm using they/she and in english this works fine, but in germany im just a she/her. This upsets me. As a programmer I can see how this could be a pain to set up, checking each message and then updating the preferred pronoun. That being said, it is then also easier to update the preferred pronoun with a custom one, since you already have 'found' the pronoun in that sentence and only need to replace that. Still a very important and big update tho :)
