    When using gain, fuzz, etc on bass you have to mix/EQ in a very specific way to cut through tastefully. Almost all the really great sounding gain bass distortions on their own don’t work with a full band. If you mix music a lot you already know this. You need some dry signal and some bright fizzy gain. Som Mids help you cut through in a clean way but don’t necessarily let you hear the gain.

    The bassist from Softcult has really great tones and uses this. He goes from a compressor into the ODB-3, then into a Darkglass preamp, then direct into the PA.
    Thanks for sharing this live reaction/demo. I really appreciate your insights and humor. You really do inspire me to play more and have fun with sound, and fixate less on gear.

    I think in a band mix context the dry signal is great, retaining the clarity and bass then having some saturation to cut through. I like the lowest gain setting in theory, this pedal is very square wave sounding. Maybe running a compressor in front with the level really low then will give more headroom for low gain. Underrated pedal that’s built strong. can be bought cheap to build out a bass board with a couple other pedals

    Hey I'm just getting into learning about analog music production, love and appreciate your content, was wondering if you could answer a question... Let's say I'm recording something at home using a mixer into the 4 track porta, and I get everything sounding how I want it on the playback... How exactly might I go about "releasing" this recording for others? Do I record the cassette into a DAW like FL Studio and then release it on Bandcamp? What exactly is the "master" tape in this instance, the one to be used for (hypothetical) pressings-the cassette? I know very little about this stuff so anything you could share would be super helpful. Thanks and keep making great videos!

    • @MadeOnTape
      @MadeOnTape  2 года назад +1

      hey there! great question! Yes... you should record the main outs, or stereo out, of your portastudio during playback (generally called "mix down"), and then you have a digital file... a simple stereo file... of your music.
      the work is not over, however, as you or anyone with Mastering experience needs to take that track and bring it up to levels that can be distributed. There's more to it than that, and the mastering engineer (which can be you!) can also affect the sound of the "two bus".
      Once mastered, you can distribute anywhere. I use Distrokid, but I also upload to bandcamp myself. Bandcamp is very cool because it's still very DIY and there is no barrier to entry.
      I hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!

    I used to play a few Primus tunes with this. It was fun to really mess with the EQ and get a little growl going while I scooped the mids on my amp. Gave it a kind of hollow growl of sorts. Pretty cool especially doing things like American Life or Fisticuffs.
