  • Hi there, welcome back!
    Is modding your Boss ODB-3 bass overdrive worth it? There are so many mods possible that we had to pick one that contrasts heavily with the original version of that pedal.
    Enjoy the video!

    Love your sense of humour. I think I like the modded one but I agree with you that they sound great together. I own a Boss DS-1 that I currently do not use on my board but I've seen a few different mods for the DS-1 as well. Again, so hard to tell if it's worth the modding.

      😅 thanks! About the mod: I keep on telling myself that I want to try, but never have the time to do so, I’m too busy! And as I said in the video, there are so many great pedals and builders out there that, in my case, I honestly think it’s not worth it… unless??? We’ll see 😉

    The modded version is quite interesting, I bet it would make a short scale bass with flatwounds sound maaaaassive. Very funny video!

      I guess so too! I find the low very “boxy” as I mentioned in the video, so as long as it’s not boosted too much then it should sound great with short scale + flatwounds.

    Definitely prefer the modded sound. To me the original always sounds like two tones on top of each other whereas the modded one feels more (dare I say it) organic. Just my 2c!

      It’s the wampler mod. It’s quite easy to find it if you google it. Let me know if you have difficulties finding it. The idea is trying stuff out and there are even levels of mods to further fine tune the pedal to your liking.

    I modded mine a few years ago. It's kind of a cross between the two. I replaced the diodes with 1N4148s, which gave a smoother distortion. I tamed the high end a bit, but not this much.

    • @thewetterbass
      @thewetterbass  2 года назад

      4148s, nice! Yeah… I guess you can vary the color of the drive/distortion but its sound basically stays the same, right?

    • @DavidRavenMoon
      @DavidRavenMoon 2 года назад

      @@thewetterbass LEDs have a higher clipping threshold. They sounded harsher than the 4148 diodes. They clip sooner so the sound was smoother and more compressed. But the volume of the distortion channel is a little lower now. I’m going to try and increase the gain into the clipping stage. I really like the way this pedal sounds with a Joyo Ultimate Drive feeding it.

    • @thewetterbass
      @thewetterbass  2 года назад

      @@DavidRavenMoon you should check out the Comodoro rat video on the channel. On that pedal there a clipping mode switch that selects 4148, non or LEDs. Clearly more compression and less volume with 4148 as you mention.

  • @GeorgePRiley
    @GeorgePRiley 3 года назад

    They both have a place in the right mix. Can you get the originals sound in the modded version? That way you have two pedals in one.

    • @thewetterbass
      @thewetterbass  3 года назад

      My guess is that to have both sounds would mean finding extra space on the board inside the pedal for the extra components and having all kinds of switches outside to select them. That would not be very practical, don’t you think? The idea of modding is to find a sound that suits the best your needs and leave it as it is. 👍🏻

      Exactly. If I remember correctly I mentioned that too in the video. There are so many cool alternatives from both popular companies and boutique builders out there that I don’t think it’s worth it. Unless you enjoy moding of course... 😉

      @@thewetterbass it is the Wampler Mod, invented by Brian Wampler, Brian shared it on the internet. In most basic version, you need to replace three parts. In more advanced - two more (diodes). It is easy to determine if you look inside - stock ODB-3 has two red diodes on the board. Of course you need solder kit and some soldering skills. Of course Brian spent his time inventing this (and every other mod) and I am sure that this is the most expensive part of every mod. Time spent thinking, experimenting and doing it :)

      😂… I hoped I would!!! As I said in the video, the pedal belongs to a subscriber (Luis). He followed the Wampler mod but changed the value of one resistance for highs (3x higher than recommended) and used orange LEDs instead of silicon diodes because after trying both he said the sound is less compressed and has more low gain range. Does that help?
