these 9.2's always crack me up because i've NEVER heard anyone say they aren't turtle-slow. really bizarre because i happen to love them, minus the slow part. I converted mine to ATOM ignition modules, and it starts and idles like a sewing machine. really one of the smoothest small motors you can still run. great job on this one! its funny when i 1st ran mine i thought it was clogged with carbon in the exhaust:) its even slower than my 9.5 Evinrude and thats saying something!
To me it looks like they took the old 7.5 hp Elgin powerhead and put it in there. I still think one of the old Elgin 5.5 hp engines would outrun it though.
@@tylerott9269 haha probably would. Im pretty sure its chrsler designed through and through, although it may have been based off of a scott attwater/McCullough design im not sure
@@ct1762 it’s a west bend design completely and Chrysler just put their name on it. Same powerhead and lower unit as the old Elgins and West Bends. The midsection is different and maybe that’s what screws up the exhaust scavenging
@tylerott9269 it will! I have two of the fiberglass hood Elgin 5.5hp motors and they outdo these 9.2hp, it's crazy. There is a guy in the Chrysler group, Frank Pschonder who seems to be highly regarded on the Chrysler groups and he thinks they were inadvertently set up wrong and sent out the door from the factory
@@ALVintageOutboards I think it could use a steeper prop. At one point I had the 6 hp version and I feel that it was just about as fast. I have yet to try one of the old Elgin 7.5 hp with the full gear shift, but I think those have more gusto too
@@ct1762 You can leave these for dead, but they won’t die. These engines based off the green tank Elgin 5 and 7.5 hp have to be the toughest little engines I’ve ever seen. They seem to thrive on abuse and neglect

@ct1762 I agree completely on the running smoothly and idling great!! But I can't get but 6 mph out of any of my 9.2hp's
Great work
Ive got a few of these and they are all horribly slow 🐌 😒. They sound great, just super slow

@@tylerott9269 the looper 7.5 chrysler was very strong for its size, too. would leave these for dead!

@ct1762 Absolutely 💯! I have two '79 Looper 7.5's and they perform like mad!!
