    Great tutorials, very useful! You didn't actually need that upper stage burn to make orbit, if you watch carefully you can see the ejection force from your booster's decoupler was enough to kick your orbiter's periapsis above 70km even before you engaged your orbiter's thruster. That's one thrifty booster!

  • @joelharrison5007
    @joelharrison5007 3 года назад +14

    I love the fact that at 5:31 staging was enough to push you over that 70km threshold and into the orbit, so satisfying. awesome tutorials btw thanks so much!

It was really instructive...i started playing KSP a couple of days ago and it keeps amazing me on how details and simulative it is..i have learned a lot of thing just playing and trying to understand why my vessel was not flying correctly, or why i could not enter in orbit...on how the atmosphere, air demsity, aerodinamics and gravity works on the vessel 🤯 this game is not a game..it is a whole university phisics lesson for beguinners 😇 i cant calculate preciselly the amount of Newton needed to lift, pull or travel in space...but i now understand the complexity behind it.

    Great series, but I wish you had mentioned things that were unavailable at the time if doing career mode (which is I think what most people would start off on, rightly or wrongly). You've done it from time to time, but as an example, using caps lock for fine tuning of controls which I learned in a later video IIRC, is VITAL for beginners that don't yet have enough flight experience or have unlocked locking on the vectors in the navball. Its my new favorite tip from your series. I'm sure lots of rockets are crashed due to imprecise controls, I can surely vouch for that. Of course there is a fine line, between costs and performance, and controls don't need to be precise if your rocket is well built...but it seems like every penny is needed to be saved to upgrade tracking and mission control in career mode....because SAS locking has been a GODSEND...used nonchalantly in your videos all the time, but its very important until your have loads of launches under your belt. I can't wait to get maneuver locking!

    Thank you so much for these tutorials. They actually have given me the desire to crack open KSP for the first time in a long time and try and do some of this stuff again on my own. You give just enough detail that I can now actually get my own design tries to work properly on my own, but that I can still go back and watch parts that I need at my own pace and catch where I may have missed something important while putting my rocket designs together. So far I'm concentrating strictly on rockets and proving my skills on steadily on that side of things. But I will be coming back to plane designing at some point so I can eventually learn to design spaceplanes along the lines of the Space Shuttle along with the SSTO varieties. I hope to use that as a springboard to not only do an eventual career mode build file, but also a science mode file that includes space stations and space colonies.

    Instead of getting impatient and warping too fast past your manoeuvre node you can click the green >> button next to the node's grey m/s readout to warp to 60s before it. You can also click on a point in an orbit to warp to it. Any time I'm manually warping it's really easy easy to over-warp and have to revert or hope some quicksave works. The precise warp buttons are a godsend.

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  3 года назад

      Yup, I've learned that one since making this video. In previous version, the warp used to slow down as you approached and I was still to used to that.

    Your videos have helped me an incredible amount, having recently gotten into Kerbal Space Program. Due to these videos, I managed to orbit the Mun and get back to Kerbin!
    Thank you for the incredibly detailed videos. Now on to landing on the Mun and after that, on to Minmus!

    I am very late to your videos! I bought the game back in 2017 but had no clue how to do anything! haha... Started it back up again last night... Killed Jeb... Whoops and then Val... Whoops... But, my new Astronauts are doing alright! One is sitting in Orbit, my biggest accomplishment so far! After this video, a new rocket build and then to the Mun! - I will also need to rescue the guy in orbit as he has no fuel or thrusters left...

    It's a very good video and even though I've got a lot of time in KSP, I didn't know you could adjust your maneuver node with the interface under the stack. Thanks for the great tip.
    I do have a couple of comments though; On your first trip to the Mun you're unlikely to have enough science points unlocked for solar panels or the launch pad upgraded enough for that many parts. You can do a flyby with a simpler rocket.
    It's also a bit risky to set your PE that low since the mun has features that are about 7km over it's MSL and your pilot won't have the ability to hold to node like in your video. (on later trips maybe...)
    A safer strategy might be to get your encounter PE to 50km and do a correction burn enroute where you can be a bit less precise. Anything under 50km is considered a low orbit and will give you biome based EVA reports so 35 to 45km is usually good enough.
    Another interesting point is that if your PE is in front of the Mun on it's orbit, you'll get a free return trajectory where the craft will loop back to Kerbin rather than doing a Kerbin escape if you don't do an orbital insertion burn. (your path will look like a figure 8 when seen from above and it's the same thing NASA did for their moon missions)
    If you just do a flyby without an orbit you'll only need a small retro burn to put your PE into the atmosphere when you get back to Kerbin.
    I see you commented on that in the video just after I wrote this. lol
    One other tip that I'd add is to have your craft facing perpendicular to your path when you jettison your booster for re-entry. If you dump it prograde or retrograde you're likely to collide when the first one of you to hit atmosphere slows down before the second one.

    Thanks, I need to watch this vid a few time more but I understood quite a few things. Now I know how to make my spacecraft position itself for the maneuver (never paid much attention to the node feature). I still have a few Delta-V issues and slammed into the Mun, but the whole approach looked much better. I have built a huge Rocket that carries a smaller multi-stage rocket in its nosecone, the whole structure is quite silly because it uses 5 of the Saturn V quad thrusters and is so heavy that it accelerates very slowly. But it gets to space and initiates orbit maneuvers.

    So there I was, following every step to the letter and managed to gather a TON of science just like here. One key thing though. I failed to drop my orbit at Kerbin enough to actually slow down enough to land. I was only at about 53K which led to the nightmare scenario of just skipping off Kerbin's atmosphere over and over and over again until I had ablated enough heat shield that poor Bob Kerbin eventually died in a fiery death... :-(

    Another awesome video for beginners like me. Can't wait to see future ones. I'd love to see how to plan a free return trajectory mission. I do have a question though, is it possible to place all of your maneuver nodes before you even take off, or once you're in orbit, rather than doing them one at a time in flight? I'd love to be able to plan my whole flight plan ahead of time then simply follow the plan as I go. Thanks again and please keep up the awesome videos!

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  4 года назад +1

      I almost made this mission a free return trajectory. Part of me wishes I did. To your question, once you have a flight path, you can start making maneuver nodes, and yes, you can plan ahead with multiple nodes by putting nodes onto the projected path. Both of these two topics will be covered in future videos.

    If you ever update this series, it would be helpful to describes certain things that you do that would not be available to do at this stage in tech for career mode. Lol, for starters, pilots at level 0 suck for beginners (yes, I am beginning at career mode) but through numerous crashes I've got better with manually controlling the navball but wow, having the ability to lock on pro/retrograde makes things SO much easier. Can't wait until I can lock on maneuvers. Science is also a bit more challenging I suppose as well, its so confusing to try to keep track of where and when you can collect it. I'm finally piecing it together...I've spent HOURS trying to figure out why I couldn't collect my Science Jr data on my moon flyby mission, as I've always recovered the craft in the past, but because of possible high re-entry speed, I didn't want to risk bringing them home. I saw you apparently collect your data on this mission, and was dying as to why I could not collect mine. Well...I had a heat shield and a decoupler, I don't believe your craft did, so the extra space put it slightly out of reach from the bottom of the capsule. I had to try an RCS freespace EVA (for the second time, the first time didn't go well as I didn't know up/down commands and didn't realize the camera points your direction...I was frantically trying to figure out how to pitch my kerbal while doing my best George Clooney impression from Gravity , lol). The EVA did it...easy collect, just like my cheap and stupid "jet car" that I've built to collect science jr reports from around KSC. Anyways, thank you for the series...the game probably would have been shelved if not for people like you.
