Recipe for making Hops Bread, a tasty dinner roll type bread from Trinidad and Tobago. This Caribbean style bun is great for sandwiches, burgers or to just enjoy with your dinner.
Hi Chris, here's a little tip to get your dough to rise quickly especially when it is cold up there in Canada. Heat the oven for ONE min @ 200 degrees then turn the oven off. Just put the dough in to rise. Hope this is helpful.
Chris! Made this a few times already and always perfect. My 🇹🇹 hubs 💘 these. Making homemade chix soup tonight with sweet red greek squash and watching your vid to have company in the kitchen while I make your hopsbread to go with it. You're a family friend, soldier! Thanks for your work. Bought a couple of books and will buy more this holiday.
I have been struggling to make a good bread for my husband. Being Trinidadian and having a mom that could cook anything under the sun, I thought bread would be a cake walk but sadly no. I am so happy for your recipe because for the first time I made bread that was just simply delicious and my husband loved it.
I just want to say thank you so much Chris for posting this recipe. Today was my first day ever making bread and this came out absolutely PERFECT!!! They are soooo good. I am making pulled pork to go inside them. I know my family will love them... Thanks again
You are awesome, thank you, thank you, thank you. You are a true teacher, so relatable, GENIUS. Hope you get a show on TV, show the world how its done Carribean style.
If you can get green banana/plantain leaves, wash and lightly 'sear' over a open stove flame, moving the leaf across the flame to avoid burning the leaf in any one area. This makes the leaf pliable and reduce the staining oozing liquid .Lightly Spray PAM Oil on the leaves and cut into 2" squares and place in greased baking tray and place a dough balls on top of each leaf piece. Lightly mist/Spray a little water on the dough balls before placing in the oven.Bake as usual and remove from oven. Remove the leave pieces after from the bread has cooled in the tray.Check the aroma? Notice any difference?. Family secret from Fyzabad.
Winston Clifford Nice. I remember back in the day, sometimes you'll get a hops bread with a piece of banana leaf stuck to it. That's authentic. Good job Chris!
I follow yur recipe step by step and my bread came out perfect. I tried baking bread before an it was a complete failure. Thank you very much I feel happy now knowing I can master my own bread at home 👍
Hi yall As I see all these positive comments Can someone help me. I tried this recipe and it came out almost perfect. I have 2 question: the bottom of my bread came out hard and sticked to the wax paper. Can someone please explain the rising time I'm confused. 35 to 45 minutes when he makes the dough. Then 45 minutes after making the balls. Can someone please help. I really want to try did successfully Thank you in advance 😁
I would like to personally thank you for this recipe, I have tried numerous time to make Hops Bread (Unsuccessfully), but the meticulous way you took your time to show me I know that know I would succeed this time. Again I would like to thank you again.

i just wanna say thank you very much...as i found your video by luck and chance. since I've been battling in the kitchen for some months...wondering why my rolls weren't coming out right. i have since used your recipe and it always comes out perfect....'big fluffy rolls'. I'm an island girl from St Lucia. So thank you once again and keep reminding us Caribbean people of the delicious food we've left behind.
Hey just want to say thank you for this great recipe. After watching this I realized that I was killing my yeast in my previous attempts. I tried your way and like magic, I have the best light, flaky and delicious rolls. I'm vegan so I baked these and made Falafel burgers for me and my son. Awesome Sauce!!! Perfect meal w/ oven baked fries. And you were right, I couldn't wait for them to cool and had some w/ butter right out the oven while the rest cooled. I tried not to let the thought of cheese cross my mind....lol. Thanx again.
Lionel Gajar hey man that is the best bred in the world Chung lee around the park. I remember the lines those people know how to make my day. I hope they are still around or someone is running it. Have not been home in over 20 years but I remember it and that bread is making me look it up and throw it down for d children.
Love this! I'm a huge bread lover, and I love to make all sorts of bread. To any viewers wanting it less fattening, I would say DON'T try to make it less fattening. The type of fat and the amount that you use is very important in bread-making. If a recipe calls for shortening, don't try to substitute with something else.
Hi Chris, Just to let you know, instant yeast does not need to bloom. Also please note for accurate dry measures you need to use a plastic or stainless steel dry measure cup. The pyrex in the video is for liquid measure and is usually not quite the same. Thanks for all your great work

Happy to see a Trini doing a tutorial for home made bread without using a dough maker!!! Appreciated the kneading by hand :)
YES! Exactly. All I see are people using a dough maker like they not trini😂 I'm Trinidad, all I know is kneading by hand when making bread.
