Maserati Ghibli SQ4 GranSport: Pretend the Giulia QF doesn't exist and maybe this makes sense

  • This is the Maserati Ghibli SQ4 GranSport. It looks nice. It sounds fine on the outside. And it's comfortable enough inside. And none of that is really good enough based on how much Maserati wants you to pay for this thing.
    The biggest problem the Ghibli has, is that other better options exist... and you don't need to look very far to find them. Stick with Italian flair and realize the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is a much better option. Stick within the FCA family but the American (Canadian) side, and just get a Charger.
    The Ghibli is a compromise... you want the brand/badge/looks so you settle for a car that's just not quite as good as the other options out there.

    I own both the Alfa Giulia and the Maserati Ghibli SQ4 mentioned. They are so different that I cannot compare them. The Giulia is lighter and much more agile. The Ghibli is way better on long journeys at high speed, more stable. Still, the handling at high speed is very similar as they share the same suspension system. The interior materials are better in the Ghibli. The Giulia has better performance on track, but it is not really usable everyday. The Ghibli has a better engine sound (the exhaust note is the best in the segment). There is no real winner, they are two cars catered to different target markets.

      Spot on. I’ve driven both and own the Maser. You hit everything right on the nose. For me personally, I like the looks of the Maser better and found it more comfortable plus living in the northeast, AWD is a big plus.

      Actually tested both cars at the dealership but decided with the Ghibli, ig its more daily usable and the guilia just isn't that exiting, its fast and steers damn well but maybe they aren't comparable anyways, sine Ghibli is more like a 550i and guilia is a M3.

      Youre so right. I drove the qiulia thats a competitor for the m3 c63 s , this car is asemi sporty luxury car which makes the E segment more fruity.

    We own a Giulia QV and a ‘19 Gran Lusso S. They are different cars for different purposes. I think a lot of the Negativity surrounding Maserati isn’t because of the cars themselves, it’s what non owners and the on line commentariat think Maserati should be. The reality is Maserati was never what they think it should be. It’s always been an expression of Italian luxury and style, not a Ferrari sedan.

    This guy lost me when he criticized the exhaust note. And comparing this to an Alfa? They are two different car. He doesn’t get it.

      Alfa QF sounds great. But come on, Maserati exhaust note is in a league of its own. Even "non-enthusiasts" can't argue with that, surely!

    "Ferrari is for the son and Maserati is for the father" Enzo Ferrari.. The awd and style is why we drive em. Nice vid with some nice points.3.8 Ghibli would be A God!!! V6 tt at 7k verry v12 . Also alot left motor wise .

    This is an $80k car that's priced $26k above where it should be. At $80k, this is a winner but over $100k, es no bueno.

    I always think of Maserati as iconic brand that gets no respect. I remember in the Flintstones cartoon, they were referred to as "Maserocks". I don't know if it is the performance, look or quality of the cars that leave it lacking. I do know when i see the name "Ghibli", i thing of that terrible Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck movie "Gigli".

    No one actually pays anywhere near sticker for a Ghibli, do they? My local dealer has a lot full of them for 25k off MSRP before you even start negotiating. Although even 25k off, it's still over priced.

    • @Isalei84

      The right move is to buy a 1-year gently used 2018+ model for about half the sticker price.

    I couldn't agree with you more, Jeff. My wife leased an SQ4 Ghibli last summer for nearly $20K off the sticker MSRP. I tried to talk her into one of the comparable German sport sedans but she wanted something less mainstream. Her family and friends were awestruck by the Ghibli while discerning car nerds like me recognized it as a glorified FCA product. It's a cool car to drive for its straight line performance but its material fit and trim pieces have several noticeable flaws.

      The right move is to get a 1-year gently used 2018/19+ model for about half the brand new sticker price. I love my SQ4 and I prefer it compared to my previous owned BMW, Audi and Mercedes sport luxury sedans. If you focus on the material of the windows switches and some few other plastic buttons, and you don't admit that those buttons and switches are of the EXACT same plastic quality in the German competitors... Than you are just another biased hater.

      The interior doesn't feel premium for the MSRP. The FCA switchgear could be upgraded by Maserati to give a more upscale appearance. Some parts of the interior are nice like the seats but most of it feels like a Chrysler 300 at first glance.

    For your information, Giulia is in other segment. It competes with 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C-Klasse, Volvo S60, Cadillac CT4, etc. If we are speaking about the Quadrifoglio version, it competes with the M3, C63 AMG S, while the Ghibli SQ4 goes neck by neck with Mercedes E53 AMG, BMW M550i. You welcome!

    That moment when you realize that Hoonivers basicly copied/pasted Doug De-moron's review...
    Point 1... Car "Enthusiast" are the squeeky wheel... they scream, WE WANT "X".. but don't purchase when made
    Point 2... The buyer of an Alfa Gulia QV is not the same buyer as a Ghibli SQ4 - so that argument is nonsensical
    Point 3... The Parts Bin argument is weak. Diamler/Chryser partnership in early 2000's make them Mercedes parts
    Point 4.... Be it an Accord or F150.. "Value" is perceived and cannot be quantified, ppl spend on what they choose

    I like the way it looks. Inside and out. I like it. But the Ferrari gimmick is BS. Ferrari v6 is stupid. I cant. I couldnt at 60k. Damn sure when its 100k plus. We looked at them for half a second and I didnt see the justification. Way to much FCA for that price I'm sorry.

    • @MM-fp3zb
      @MM-fp3zb 4 года назад

      You could get one loaded for 85K or so. And at that price, the car is worth it. Benz AMG 63 doesn’t compare in looks and is more expensive. Ironic thing is while Benz has a much better track record on reliability, the Benz I had gave me nothing but problems. Almost drove it through the showroom window. Lol. I’ve owned 5 Masers and never had a problem with any of them other than Bluetooth in the GTS. Go figure.

  • @MM-fp3zb
    @MM-fp3zb 4 года назад +1

    Enjoyed the review. Can summarize your 9:30 review in 30 secs though. The Maserati blows away the Gulia outside and inside in looks and comfort. The Gulia blows away the Maserati driving wise and costs less. The question is how much more would you pay for a better looking car that comes in AWD? 10-12K? If yes, then the Maser is for you. Period.
