ErisRising fun fact: the lead vocalist for toto did simbas vocals for the lion king, he also wrote most of Michael Jackson's songs, listen to human nature by Michael and then I won't hold you back by toto.
Duran Sok Weezer couldn't play all of Toto's songs and make it sound nearly as good as Toto. As for Toto, they'd turn every Weezer song into a masterpiece.
They did a better job of covering 'Hash Pipe' than Weezer did covering 'Africa'. No, not better than the original, though a lot of band's covers are better than the original or even just as good, yet different.
Susan Murtha there are plenty of covers that are arguably better than the original. Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt was even acknowledged by nine inch nails as superior
What a time to be alive. A meme that inspired a cover that inspired another cover. They'll produce studies of these sorts of things long into the future.
Robert Cole the whole “Toto - Africa” thing is a wild internet meme. The internet decided to campaign for Weezer to cover the song. They did and now Toto is covering them. It’s a wild, meta ride.
Not exactly. I girl did a twitter profile asking weezer to cover Africa. Not a meme thing. They did. So we asked Luke to do the same w Hash Pipe. He did it too!
Toto are so great, they really don't take themselves serious, they just have fun, and that's Luk's vibe all over the place.....the guy is one of the greatest guitar players of all time and he doesn't give a shit about it. This a real tribute and thanks to the guys from Weezer, cause it is known that the guys from Toto are really grateful for the love others bands and artists give to their music, they don't give a shit about that legendary status, they just love when their music touches others. Class act!
This was actually quite cool, as Weezer paid tribute to Toto with their cover of Africa, Toto decided in turn to pay tribute to Weezer by covering Hashpipe. Both bands have done amazing, bless them, would love to see them perform each others' songs on tour together.
Ramsdell as a guitar player i can tell you that i have never played this song before but i could learn it as fast as i could listen to it because im familiar eith the song
RPGRelicHunter helping people achieve their dreams through marketing themselves, sharing fundraisers for good causes, raising awareness of social issues, etc etc aren't all good things?
Kathryn Jenkins a pale comparison to this amazing collaboration! All those things you mentioned have brought us such gems as Nazi marchers in VA, the rise of the MAGA culture and Kylie Jenner getting donations to be a billionaire.
I know that Joe kinda blew his vocals out around the late 80s, but good God, Joseph is back and it's so great to hear him!! As much as you have to love the foundation of TOTO, Joe was the coolest lead!
This is to amazing and i barley can take this awesomeness. Such a great and grateful response from Toto it's actually impressing. Both bands can rock and roll, soooo much! I'm so drunk
Love both "Africa" and "Hash Pipe". Have to say I enjoyed Toto's "Hash Pipe" cover more than Weezer's "Africa" cover (except the Weird Al cameo), but both were cool.
JediMasterZao he's referring to Toto covering a band. If you knew anything about Toto, you'd know of their album Through The Looming Glass where they cover a bunch of artists and make the songs even better than they originally were. Toto consists of some of the best studio musicians of all time. Look up all of the artists they've played for, you'll be surprised with how much stuff they've worked on that you're familiar with.
I knew all of that but within the context of back and forth covers between Toto and Weezer, I'd assumed that he was talking of more Weezer covers by Toto, specifically.
@@debonaire_nerd I'm glad the joke was understood. I wasn't born until 13 years after that song released and wasn't sure if a lot of people would get it. 😂
Toto does this better than Weezer. Don’t know if Weezer was goofing on them by covering Africa but all they proved is that Toto wipes the floor with them.
I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!! I have been a fan of both old and new and nothing gives me greater joy than cross-generational appreciation for the other's music. I listen to Supremes, Blondie, Weezer and Drake as if they were all contemporaries. Music, (the notes, the lyrics, the feelings behind the songs) knows no age. On paper, the words to "Baby Love" by the Supremes are as eternal as "No Tears Left To Cry" by Ariana Grande. If you were shown lyrics from two different songs and you didn't know the artists, you couldn't tell the writers' ages by words alone. And that's why I scratch my head trying to figure out why older acts' new songs can't be played on Top 40 radio with younger artists' songs. This shows there doesn't need to be that divide.
It's marketed that way to be mutually exclusive and emphasize younger talent. I wonder if there's a sirius XM channel dedicated to new albums by classic bands since I don't have it.
Omfg how awesome is this? I grew up listening to Toto and passing different genres loving Weezer and when they did Totos songs I was blown away. And now Toto has returned the favor. How frickin cool is that. I bet Weezer was blown away. Too awesome. Thank to both bands.
So many people saw this as such a positive thing as did I. How refreshing from all the daily hate we have to deal with. And for those of you who know nothing about Toto, they actually are so much more than Africa...which seems to unite people. Do your homework...google Jeff Porcaro...ignorance is man's worst quality!
awwwwww they smoothed out my favourite part of the song, the rhythmic "uuugh" bit at the end of the main riff that makes the song.. not dull. The singer did do it toward the end.
I just learned that the band did a cover of the band that covered them! This is really cool. I didnt think I would recognize it, not being a big Weezer follower, but I immediately recognized it as a song Weezer played on the Hella Mega Tour. At that concert I kept thinking "how much money Weezer made for Africa in mechanical royalties." Probably a lot more than Africa got for performing Hash Pipe, considering Weezer studio recorded it.
Weezer covering Toto: sounds ok, a little weak Toto covering Weezer: nails it down the middle and improves on it with epic harmonies and epic synth solo.
cody scott agreed but Toto always had that advantage being a bunch of studio musicians that play on tons of other artists albums. Hell they probably played on the Weezer record.
I LOVE that they picked Hash Pipe... That crunchy guitar riff and the oh so 90s references to big jeans it's fukkin awesomeness. Make this the next trend in music... Please...

This summer bromance of two bands gives me life.
ErisRising fun fact: the lead vocalist for toto did simbas vocals for the lion king, he also wrote most of Michael Jackson's songs, listen to human nature by Michael and then I won't hold you back by toto.
Ben Phone That actually was a fun fact. Thanks!
ErisRising everything went better than expected
ErisRising fun shit
Steve Porcaro is the one who wrote for Michael Jackson, not Joseph Williams. You are right on Williams serving as Simba's singing voice though.
Ahh... these two bands need to go on tour with each other and only play sets of each other's songs.
And never play their own songs. Only play the others
Duran Sok Weezer couldn't play all of Toto's songs and make it sound nearly as good as Toto. As for Toto, they'd turn every Weezer song into a masterpiece.
That's the next natural course for this whole thing.
Come on stage as each other and play the others sets. Don't even acknowledge they swapped.
ATalkingBadger
I believe it. But its a challenge
This isn’t an obligatory, half assed cover. Toto really rocked it here! 🤘🏻
Prototypical driving rock & roll guitar. Love it toto.
It's hot!
Toto isn’t trying to do it better than Weezer or anything. Music isn’t a competition. Both bands just had fun!
They can't do it "better" than Weezer since it's Weezer's song to begin with... But they did do a good job covering it :)
I'm Chris Luke Yeah I would say both bands did faithful to the original versions. I like the solos in this one.
notreallybandfromottawa I loved the solos.
They did a better job of covering 'Hash Pipe' than Weezer did covering 'Africa'.

Nicolle M right, but Toto - Africa has been a meme for a while.
Praise be to harambe.
link to meme?
They should have covered Weezer's cover of Toto's Africa
Justin Robichaux inception level cradle of civilization. Meta cubed.
It would have sounded exactly like the original Africa, but with an added synth solo
Hahahaaa
Justin Robichaux LOL
They should do Weezer doing Toto's Africa doing Father John Misty doing the Velvet Underground as Ryan Adams doing Taylor Swift's 1989!
Never heard of a band covering a song becuase another band covered their song! Love it
I love it!
Weezer and Foster The People did it quite a few years ago
Band of horses and CeeLo Green - No one gonna love you & Georgia

Bless the rains actually
I'm glad you explained it. No one knew. 🙄
Yeah I think the first Toto cover they did was Rosanna
Damn. I just realised technology has advanced to the point where I have to ask whether or not your profile picture is a video game.
well, weezer do it for fans.
even the album cover is the fan tweet
Kind of wish they would have covered Island in the Sun, that would have sounded amazing from Toto.
gyloir It's a bit repetitive though..
THIS!
Yes! They would have nailed that!
Well Weezer DID cover both Africa AND Rosanna, so maybe they'll do another song???
gyloir yep. I must agree.
They KILLED it with their own version of the bridge of the song. Awesome work, Toto.
This is one of the cutest things in rock and roll I've ever seen. They're both really fond of each other!
The cycle is complete
Ekana Stone they need to do 1 more so so they both cover 2 of each other's song
Or has it just begun?
menstrual?
In the words of Dethklok...
IT'S JUST THE BEGINNING!
When Weezer left Toto they were but a learner, now they are the master.
Holy crap. So glad to have seen this. Never knew how good toto sounded live. And covering my favorite song by the band. How freaking awesome.
I would love to hear more bands do this! This is great!
Because they are touring together this summer 311 and The Offspring recorded a cover of one song from the each other.
shakey27 cant wait for northerly again this year. 311 kills it there.
I'm checking them out at Minnesota state fair. I tried to get tickets to the cruise but it sold out too fast.
One of my favorite weezer songs. I can't believe they covered this. They did an amazing job!!!
Single of Toto's "Hash Pipe" cover will be Available "August 10th everywhere" Replied by Steve Lukather on Twitter.
Awakesdarkness Really? Would love to hear a studio version of this.
yes it's coming out tomorrow
Whereeeeeee
amazon music , iTunes, etc. Digital Download
It’d be great as a 7” with Weezer’s “Africa” on the other side. On white vinyl, of course...😁
I was hoping Toto would cover Pink Triangle. But Hash Pipe is fine with me.
That would be amazing! Let's get that campaign going.
T J great I dea
they prob learned this song is like 10 minutes. not saying anything bad about the song, but this was probably so easy for them to whip together.
Ramsdell as a guitar player i can tell you that i have never played this song before but i could learn it as fast as i could listen to it because im familiar eith the song
They can always do another cover if we all ask nicely.
Why don’t you two bands get a room?

Outstanding! The greatest response to a cover - Ever!
Would love to hear a studio version, Weezer's "Africa" is really well done.
Tyler think they said they're gonna do a studio version!
That's what I read too. Should be released in a week or so.
I would have loved to hear Weezer put their own spin on "Africa." It just felt like a bar-for-bar copy.
Mark Donnelson agreed. And a weak one at that.
They should do a limited release 7" or something for charity. Double A-Side.
I'm feeling the love. Someone get them together already
We need to get this trending!
Steve Porcaro did the Africa solo when Weezer was on Jimmy Kimmel, so that was step 1.
I know that Joe kinda blew his vocals out around the late 80s, but good God, Joseph is back and it's so great to hear him!! As much as you have to love the foundation of TOTO, Joe was the coolest lead!
holy shit first time seeing this, toto kills it in this version!
I still bless the rains down in Africa tho...
Mad respect to Toto
This band should try covering "Africa" by Toto that song is great
Quite true
I bet they can't do it was well as Weezer though.
While Weezer were busy blessing the rains down in Africa, Toto meanwhile got themselves a hash pipe
This is so awesome!!!❤❤❤
I kinda love this

Great covers from both bands! amazing for sure! Loved it! Great job from one of my all time favorite bands!
TOTO Killed it guys!
It....it.....actually worked. They did it. It sounds amazing.
Now for some reason I believe Spandau Ballet could cover Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Lmao 🤣

WTF are you even talking about? This isn't a wrestling match or a football game. It's not a competition.

The band is Toto, NOT Africa.. Africa is the Toto song that Weezer covered..
Oh my god you just called the band Africa.. Also fyi, TOTO also studio recorded hash pipe
That's an epic honor right there! Awesome!
Love it!
This was fantastic! Well done.
Weezer covering Toto: sounds ok, a little weak
Toto covering Weezer: nails it down the middle and improves on it with epic harmonies and epic synth solo.
cody scott agreed, especially with the improvement on guitar with the legendary Steve Lukather and his signature tone and playing style.
Except that hey played the song wrong. The last notes on the chorus do not descend chromatically, it stays the same for the last beats.
Hash Pipe is a way better song and thus the cover of it is far better. Africa is meme trash.
cody scott agreed but Toto always had that advantage being a bunch of studio musicians that play on tons of other artists albums. Hell they probably played on the Weezer record.

I LOVE that they picked Hash Pipe... That crunchy guitar riff and the oh so 90s references to big jeans it's fukkin awesomeness. Make this the next trend in music... Please...

Farkkk.. they really did the vocals well. Superb! I really have no idea why I'm surprised... these guys are so pro! Great energy.... rock on Toto.
"We were smoking hash long before they were born." LOL. Looks like they had fun with this one.
