One of the best things about this channel is he gets right into the content. No unrelated bullshit for the first 5 minutes to fill space followed by “now let’s get right to it.”
Thank you!!
@I STAN Kim Jong-Un but Can't STAND Trump Because fuck content creators for trying to make a living, right?
@@RickBeatobro you’re literally the GOAT music RUclipsr
Mikey Welsh’s bass playing is supremely underrated. Rest In Peace Mikey
Not to mention the bass tone
Oh, damn, I didn't know he passed. The bass is my favorite part!!!
Rick playing air drums to Weezer... made my night! \m/
always does mine....just saw Weezer on the 26th. Short show, but man, they bring the noise in large fashion!
A glimpse into 13-year-old Beato
Rick's level of excitement while doing this video is amazing. You can tell he is "Ride or Die" for Weezer. I pretty much tuned out listening to music in the 90's after a long decade of playing guitar in a band. I tuned out of music in general, so I missed Weezer and a lot of other bands. So, when I started watching their videos a few months ago, I got excited by the level of songwriting craft as well as musicianship going on.
dude - totally!
Yooo he was so hype haha
when Rick does the air-drumming it's like full on drunk-dude-in-a-bar-telling-you-about-why-Neil-Peart-is-so-good
This video really shows off how good and exciting Weezer's drummer is.
They guy's playing is really attention-grabbing live as well. [I should learn the name Patrick Wilson.]
Yeah, but when he tells you why he's great, he's really actually telling you why he was great.
@@george474747 It's Pat Wilson. Other than Rivers, he's the only sole consistent member?
@@ripperplaysclon152 Brian Bell as well
@@adrianrubindecelis5377 Brian joined after the recording of the Blue Album. The original backing vocalist and rhythm guitarist was Jason Cropper. He was fired because Rivers felt like he threatened their chemistry.
We play this song in our band...and it's so much fun to do. Great song!
I take a break from watching your video game channel only to find you here too ha. Rock on dude. 👍 Are you preordering the ps5?
Kool story bruh
Nice to find you here dude!
Hey same! I play bass for it and Mikey makes it so fun with the bass fills
@@___Vix my band plays it too and it's probably our favorite one to play and I love playing those fills.
Rivers is an amazing musician..I saw them live and he did a song all by himself (with the help of loopers of course) they were supposed to be opening up for Blink 182 but Travis had some issues and the couldn’t make it so WEEZER stepped up and played for over 2 hrs!!! Kicked ass!!! Much respect for them!!
That sounds like a dream show, Weezer and then blink-182. I would kill to see this live.
I saw Weezer with Foo Fighters.
Weezer played Lithium and the Foo Fighters played Say It Ain't So.
Was that in 2009 august?
Could be… I’ll check my shirt!….lol
The fact that Rick can hit those falsetto notes is pretty impressive.
Hash Pipe is cool and all...
But I really want to know how they made The Sweater Song sound so awesomely awkward
in what manner?
@@kilgoretrout3966 nerdy
Well, its played very loose and casual, but steps into a hard driving chorus. The lyrics aren't a typical hard rock subject. The guitar opens by plodingly playing around 4 notes in somewhat varying sequence. It is to the beat but loosely so.
Then you have background chatter in the opening and after the 1st chorus, which is directly making fun of he "Rockin' Party Dude" set. Many times a Smart Nerd can make the average guy look stupid without his target perceiving it. Methinks Rivers Cuomo has that in spades.
Metaphorically, it doesn't have common tropes to tell its story...boiled down its, "here, take this, now leave, it doesn't please me, but leave." Still, his indecision contributes to a stereotypical "nerd" narrative.
just some thoughts.
be well,
-trout
ianstchalfon Matt Sharp
The name of the song is undone
Rivers Cuomo is an amazing songwriter and works his ass off writing. He will write 50 tunes to make a single album.
True, looking forward to Van Weezer.
DOCTORWHO ISGR8 I love Weezer but their new stuff Is just so bland. Judging off the single for van weezer it’s going to be just more “filler”
@@thetrump9974 what? i thought end of the game was a great return to form after the mediocre black album. the second single, hero, was pretty meh i'll give you that
True there was lots of b sides (8 or 9) to the Album Pinkerton well there is reasons why but I forgot
Then he'll use 10 to make a good album, and use the other 40 to bring out 4 shitty albums.
The Cars are one of the most criminally underappreciated bands ever. Elliot Easton is the man!
Our Boston heroes!
@@HolySmokeOfficial Better than Aerosmith for SURE!
Well, being from Boston, we love us some Aerosmith, too! We'll go with The Cars for better albums and writing and Aerosmith for better live band and overall rocker appeal. Check out our guitarist... He's a perfect mix of Elliott Easton and Joe Perry!
One of the all time great bands
Benjamin Orr was a hell of an asset too
As a bassist i love playing this song. Everything about it is just perfect from the technical skill it takes to the sheer awesomeness of the sound
A great song, and happy to see Weezer on WMTSG! Plus, nothing better than you playing air drums :)
Best Weezer song, far and away, without a hint of question.
Didn't know the Ric Ocasek production connection but it fits perfectly. Love or hate The Cars but you can't argue about their production.
Right on!
The video editing has become so good, I don't know if it's Rick or a third party source. These videos are so watchable just because of the information/ subject/ editing.
Rivers has a degree from Harvard in music composition. He also spent a solid 5 years obsessively analyzing hits from other artists over the decades and took detailed notes on everything about them. He absolutely knows what chords and notes he picks.
I love Rick Beato nerding out on the pre-chorus. That's also the part when I always go nuts on the air-drumming. I like the forward driving groove that the kick provides when it goes back into the main riff with those double kick.
I never realized how many interesting musical elements were in this song as many times as my band has covered this song. I love this series keep it up!
That amp stack appearing suddenly is the most threatening thing you've ever had in your videos.
I dig the megaphone vocal effect on the chorus. Having fronted a STP Tribute I have a affinity for the mega.
Utterly class. Never seen Rick so hyped about a song.
Love it.
But he's this hyped about pretty much every song he has covered on the channel so far
He's really nerding out on this one, it's great
Have you not seen the last video about The Doors song?
This song is so hype!
Man he was SO hyped for the Nirvana vid
Ocasek is a genius writer and producer..i can hear drifts of the Cars interspersed in this song too...
Dude! You have the *best* 'drum face'!! Another nice wmtsg. Thanks!
Absolutely! I feel like maybe I'm not such an idiot for playing air drums :-)
Matt from Periphery has him beat tho
@@mprior93 Does Paul Gilbert's guitar-face beat his drum-face, though?
Right!! 😊
I just saw Weezer last weekend for the first time. I wasn’t what you would call a big fan but I liked what I heard on the radio since the 90’s. All these years later I find they are amazing live. Like every other one of these “what makes this song great videos” it makes me have a much deeper understanding of this song (always one of my favorites of theirs) and I appreciate that a lot.
Wow, all those modulation and distorion effects in the vocals that I've never noticed before.
Hey Rick, I don’t usually make requests in the comment section, but I’ve been on this kick lately of Chicago’s hits between ‘69 and ‘74. I saw them live at the fabulous forum in 1975 and they were amazing!
Please do more Weezer. Would love an Only In Dreams episode.
Only in Dreams....This. THIS. THIIIIS!!!!
I’ve always loved that huge build up at the end of Only in Dreams. Epic.
Charlie T. Sanford The director at my former High School wrote a 15 page essay on that song. It’s incredible.
PLEASE DO ONLY IN DREAMS!
@@universitydrivemusic Holiday.
Can I be reborn into a universe where Rick is my Dad?!
Please.
If you did you'd be walking around with perfect pitch right now.
Said.....everyone
if he was my Dad i might have actually reached my potential lol
Rick, I have recently become a huge fan of your channel, especially this series! You clearly have a strong passion/enthusiasm for all things music, and you back it up with just the right amount of composition and recording theory. Thank you so much for your wonderful content!
I love your enthusiasm about all the great songs, it's obviously your joy to make these videos and talk about the songs, it's always a jow for the viewers.
Another what makes this song great video by Rick Beato to demonstrate what makes Rick Beato Great. Thanks for sharing.
The late great, Mikey Welsh (who prior to Weezer played bass for Juliana Hatfield) with the great bass tone. Also in the words of Andreas Kisser from Sepultura, “you don’t need to tune down to be heavy.”
Now do ``Crab''
If you do one of these for any of Weezer’s songs off of Pinkerton it would be the best. That album has always been such a unique tone and sound compared to all the other albums
Yeah, as big fans we love Pinkerton. Most of the public barely knows it exists unfortunately
I agree Pinkerton is there best album followed by the blue album in my opinion
He would have to make a video of an hour at least for each song because there's a lot going on with the instruments and the harmonies the guitars achieve in almost every song. Pinkerton is rich in instrumentation!
Yep. Amazing song structures
🤘Blue Album 🤘
I love how you can take a song I never cared for and pick it apart and show the magic of it. Gives me a fresh new perspective on it. Thanks!
The only non-perfect thing about this video is the fact you didn't do it earlier. Great song, great analysis, great underestimated band!
Wish Pink Floyd and The Beatles weren't blockers, so you could do Shine on You Crazy Diamond, or Penny Lane. Great songs with great things to learn from.
Awesome vid, Rick, congrats (y)
The Penny Lane verse is a great (and slightly more sophisticated) example of the same kind of melodic chord-tone writing Rick talks about here.
@@ValveSpecial yes, but this song goes further, with tone shifts building up to the chorus. It is an amazing source of inspiration while composing harmonies.
I wish he could do My fairy king, March of the black queen, Flick of the wrist or In the lap of the gods by queen
I'd kill to get Rick's breakdown on more Beatles stuff
I love how you always give me a new way to views songs that I've known forever.
Your enthusiasm for Weezer is just divine!
Speaking of 2001, you have to cover a strokes song one of these days
Awesome job Rick, love your channel and the choices you make.Rock on☆
I love these videos. What I like most about them is how you combine you musical expertise, knowledge, and experience with the genuine excitement and enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning. Awesome! 🤙🏼
A Wild Full Stack appears. Rick used the Bass A note on the D chord. It was super effective!
Glad I'm not the only one that hears that Nirvana influence. Thought I was crazy lol.
Even thought the Big Cheese reference was a nod to Bleach. (Even though Mr. Mustache is the song that reminds me more of Hash Pipe off that album).
The lyric is “Big G’s” but I thought it was big cheese at first too
Always great when Rick's out of breath at the end.
This is greatness. Keep it up, Rick.
Best stuff on RUclips.
Hey Rick your enthusiasm for these songs is contagious.....every time you do one of these videos i go to itunes, buy the song and add it to my "Beatos best" play list....just want to say thanks!
Thank you I massively appreciate this series it's amazing.
Would love to see a The La’s - There She Goes episode!
The way describe songs reminds me of when we used to try to sell our buddies on a new band or tune. Lol... love it!
Hey Rick, I really like that edit at 11:55. That was cool. Along with the song, of course. When I watch your “What makes this song great “ videos, you bring out points that I hadn’t considered when teaching my students a song.
I really like how you enjoy dissecting this videos, and playing air drums! It shows your appreciation for the songs you analyze
Whenever Rick sings, it makes me happy.
This was amazing - loved every minute. The best WMTSG yet, especially if you're a fan of air drums. :-)
I love your energy in these song analyses. Very inspiring!
Fantastic video! Love the energy in this video, your huge smile and reaction to this song resonates through me. Reminds me why I keep doing this whole music thing! It's the greatest form of communication.
You're the best. What an amazing analysis!
rivers knows his music theory really eell
He studied classical composition at Harvard for a while so yea
Rick you have a great way of making every one of these songs seem like the greatest song ever. I’m always left in awe at the way you break down a song so elegantly.
These videos are so great! Thank you and looking forward to many, many more!
Hay Rick..
Can you explain the loudness wars?
And why it happened.
And what music fell victim to it..
Really curious..
I don't know if I've ever heard a producer's take on this, to be honest. Would be really interesting.
As far as I know it started with making commercials louder in radio - if you are skipping radio stations, your ear and brain pay more attention on louder sounds, that's why radio or tv commercials seem so much louder than music or movies (in terms of sound dynamics). Some found out that if it worked with commercials, it could work with songs and then it all started. Of course loudness is attractive for our ear only for a couple of moments, then it begins to tire you but who would care besides some twisted musicians and fans of music like us?
Look up Bob Katz and the loudness wars.
@@sacredgeometry As we all know, it got ridunculous. Some poorly produced LPs suffered at the hands of the overzealous. Very simply stated for the fellow, but your definition...compression puts the audio in a narrower band that wont clip so easily, and then drive it hard, you drop a lot of stuff you can't hear, some things you can hear, but can be "sweetened". over compress, its ugly. i personally do not think dynamics are a bad thing, as in all things, it is a balance. i think that was the essence, unless i misunderstood you. But as all Engineers & Producers, i have my own approach, within the wide creative bounds of the craft, while maintaining the the optimal sound from the desk.
@@sacredgeometry did u overlook the lead in that i said Very Simply stated? i wasn't going to go into threshold, ratio, attack, release, hard knee, soft knee, et al. to the explanation, nor that compression on the loud end of the signal is referred to as attenuation. OK, how about it lessens the dynamic range between the loudest and quietest?
Is that what you wanted to hear?, cuz i wasn't dumbing it down for your benefit, and when i asked if that was in general what you were saying was in reference to what was asked in three sentences;
Over compress, its ugly. i personally do not think dynamics are a bad thing, as in all things, it is a balance. i think that was the essence, unless i misunderstood you.
Try not to fall from your horse.
I used to think Ric Ocasek did pretty much all of the lead vocals. I didn't know it for the longest time, but Benjamin Orr did a ton of the lead vocals for The Cars, including Let's Go, Drive, Bye Bye Love, Just What I Needed, Moving in Stereo, Candy-O, Shake it Up, It's All I Can Do, All Mixed Up, and more. They are both fantastic artists.
I was surprised too when I really dug into the Cars recently. Always thought it was Ric the whole time. A live vid from Houston (in the mid 80s?) showed me.
Great vocalists, amazing band!
Love Rick's enthusiasm. It's so contagious!
Brilliant. I love these videos. This is one of my favourite tunes. The air drums make me smile every time and this example of them is brilliant.
Love how the vast majority of producers wet themselves with glee when they get to dissect Weezer and Rick seems to be no exception haha
Rick Beato X Pat Finnerty collab when?
I just love how excited you get about the songs you talk about.
Always look forward to these, ty Rick. Making me play again, love you bud.
Still waiting for a Kings x....love your page!
Amen
Yeah, I think this needs to happen.
Totes
Literally just thinking "he should do Dogman," or maybe It's Love, or Shoes, or any song of theirs
Totally agree with this. We Were Born To Be Loved would be incredible to dissect.
should've done "Say It Ain't So", great video though!
Loved how pumped you were about the pre chorus - I often air drum at good bits
I can’t tell you how much I love these videos! Never stop!!!
Hey, some Weezer. Their old stuff is legit amazing. They've had a few catchy songs since then but the first few albums had the best stuff.
Haha!!! Killing it with the air drums!!
Whoooooooooo!!! Love it! Great job as usual sir!
Rick another great video. I enjoy watching someone get into the music they way that I like to. Never stop you are awesome.
Love Ricks stuff that being said …...when he's air drumming I see Beeker from the muppet show...….said with love
XD I LOVE Weezer ever since their debut. Personally Hash Pipe was the song I liked the least on this album but I don't hate the song in general. I look forward to the video, Mr. Beato :) thank you again!!
Yeah!!! Been waiting for them, thanks Rick!
I love nerding out on this channel.. love the break down
My favorite Weezer song! Thanks! (Benjamin Orr actually sang more lead in the Cars than Rick did).
Watch The Cars' Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony... They all totally give Ben the love!
Wonderful video. At least here in Brazil, Weezer is a band very underestimated by supposed "serious musicians". Nice to see someone with your knowledge giving due value to the work of the group Greetings from Brazil
Okay, Rick. I binged this series on the weekend and bought one of my favorite Yes albums after watching the "Roundabout" episode. I'm even listening to music smarter because of you educating everyone on the layers of sound and tricks. Thank you much, sir. Subscribed. Your content is too good not to.
I can't describe how awesome these series are. Thank you Rick
I'm so glad he looked at this song. Definitely my favorite Weezer song
i do love your manic drum faces! some deftones please!
The most highly requested band in the What Makes This Song Great series...come on Rick make it happen.
yes!! deftones please
Yes! Digital Bath would be an awesome breakdown to hear.
Yesssss
These episodes remind me of hanging out with my college roommates and we would dissect these songs and have fun finding every little detail, though not quite as thoroughly as you. Thank you for doing this!
Another reason I joined your club...just to make sure I gave back a little for you giving us so much. Thanks, another great one.
The opening lyric "I can't help my feelings I go out of my mind" is a direct cop from the Beatles' "You Can't Do That". John sings those exact words at the end of the last verse in one of his signature songs about jealousy. I have no idea if Rivers had that song in mind when he wrote "Hash Pipe" or if it's just a coincidence. As far as I'm concerned it's another thing that makes this song great.
W.D. Rhine Nah, the words he used are the exact words, there’s no way rivers just wrote that line
it's surely an homage
Rivers is such a brilliant musical mind
I think he's a great example of the value of having a lot of knowledge and facility, yet still understanding that less is more.
These videos are so incredible. Thank you, Rick.
I am not a musician, 90% of what you say goes over my head, but I love how you talk about it with such authority and passion!
Beato IYKYK
Ric Ocasik was the rhythm guitarist and 2nd lead vocalist for the Cars. Benjamin Orr was the lead singer and bassist for the Cars. When Orr died, so did The Cars. Ric is an excellent producer
Really liked his solo record from 1997. Worked a lot with billy corgan.
This is incorrect. Ric Ocasek sang on the majority of the Cars song (36/60 album songs), as such he was the primary lead singer. Add to that the fact that he wrote nearly EVERY Cars song, regardless of who sang, it is Ocasek that made the Cars more than anyone else. That said, most of my favorite songs of theirs had Orr on lead vocal, but all of them were written by Ocasek.
thanks Rick, always knew there was something special about this track, your air bass, and air drums explain it perfecto.
This video gives you so much pleasure that I cannot describe it properly. I just can remember sitting down and trying to get this song as good as I could by rewind my tapes time and time again. Rick is a truly master by capturing our attention with his outstanding comments and his incredible grasp on all the instruments involved into the song. VH is one of my favourite bands and I was luck enough to have seen them on stage, live in Florida. I was in trance during the show all the way long. Pure talent. I agree when he says Dave is sometimes underestimates. We have to remember that it is hard to transmit something great when you are not great. Once again congrats mate!!!!!
Airdrums is the testament of a great song. No more analyzing needed. The talking was interesting too though.
Only In Dreams please!!!!!!!!!! Also, Greatest Man That Ever Lived
i want Burdnt Jamb
Best song on the album!
Great job, Rick! I had a blast watching it.
Another great episode, I love your channel Rick!!!
The amazng thing about Weezer is how they can take a perfectly great Toto track and turn it into a wedding band song. They also sound great when loaded into a octrack and remixed with Venetian Snares.
Just an unnecessary and lazy cover of the song. Feels like an absolute cash grab.
Not my favorite Weezer track but it's in the top five. (Edit) should add, well done as per usual.
I want one of these for SAY IT AIN'T SO.
Great content here. You really add to the conversation . Love the way you isolate the tracks
and break down the theory . I am pretty sure the band just wrote and played what sounded good to them.
Getting right to business without five minutes of needless advertising preamble is why your channel is so successful and why it’s my favorite on RUclips!
