Rediscovered this song after watching the HBO/Max documentary Yacht Rock. It took me right back to the 80’s and it’s been in constant rotation for about a week now.
Unfortunately its a reason they don't... as well Michael Mcdonald. They did something at a time when just coming out of segregation, and thats doing soul music. Even after all the top soundtracks he's done of different genre's, still not in the rock n roll hall of fame. In my opinion they're viewed by their own as _____ lovers. Just shows you hateful and racist this world was and still is. Remember both came out in the early 70s right after civil rights movement, so them taking on anything thats considered black would be hated upon. Michael Mcdonald just got in the hall of fame in 2020, hall and oats 2014... far past time of being inducted. Christopher Cross still not in as the same as Kenny. But I would guess well see the both of them in soon.
This song certainly does... It touches my soul exactly the same way it did when I first heart it in 1982 at 15yrs old... Despite discovering my singing voice at 10yrs, self-taught piano by 13yrs old, I didn't fully understand my deeper resonance with this song till recently. One hope some day soon, that no-one, especially young children should have to deal with a parent, siblings / loved one's suicide news, let alone witness it... I kept saying music saved me, pretty much all my life and gave me the perfect escape, without knowing I or obsessing about the reason(s)... Could say more but it's best left to folks imagination. As a reflective, positive social Introvert, I've never had thoughts like Kenny's father did. He has a special gift story telling, conveying the most profound message, meant for his father.. Inadvertently for me more so at 58yrs old & indeed tens of millions worldwide. Now I fully appreciate his timeless music, soulful vocals and finally renewed insight and ownership of the message conveyed especially in this lyrics ☺️
I remember watching this video as a single man, years before my sons were born. I wondered what having a family and kids would be like. I tried to paint a perfect picture of what I wanted. And years later, I can say that while my depiction was not completely accurate-the experience has been nothing that I could’ve imagined! My sons are my world. My wife and I are still growing in our connection. Something we are working at. My sons are very innocent and I love them.
Lyrics: You ain't crazy I ain't gonna lie anymore What you're feelin' There's a reason for I wanna do right Oh, gotta do right Do I love you Oh you know I've tried But what you're after You can't find in my eyes I'm gonna do right Darlin' Tell the truth Don't turn away This is our last chance To touch each other's heart Does anything last forever I don't know Baby we're near the end (So darlin' tell me) So darlin', oh How can we go on together Now that we've grown apart, oh no Well, the only way to start Is heart to heart One by one We're collecting lies When you can't give love You give alibis Now, I'm gonna do right This time I got to do right I don't wanna leave I don't wanna say goodbye Sooner or later Honey there comes a time Mama, when you gotta do right Come on, come on Darlin' Tell the truth Don't turn away From this one last chance to Touch each other's heart Does anything last forever I don't know Baby we're near the end (So darlin' tell me) So darlin', oh How can we go on together Now that we've grown apart, oh no Well, the only way to start Is heart to heart Why are you so torn apart I need a little more Loving in my heart People say that love will grow So how was I to know Love that's come through years and years Can't find a way back home anymore Darlin' Tell me the truth Don't turn away This is our final chance to Touch each other's heart Does anything last forever I don't know Baby we're near the end (so darlin' tell me, oh) So, darlin', oh How can we go on together Now that we've grown apart Well, the only way to start Is heart to heart Does anything last forever I don't know but But maybe we're near the end (So darlin' tell me) So, darling, oh How can we go on together Now that we've grown apart Well, the only way to start Is heart to heart
It is a very tough video to follow. It looks to me that Kenny is seeing the world through two different lenses, one of the adult, and one of a child. There has obviously been conflict, that both the child and adult version have faced. It is presumably the childs choices that have led him to where he is now, which the woman appearing with him hints at a failed relationship. Struggling to understand things through his adult lens or to know the way foward, the child one ultimately tells (draws) him the simple answer, which of course, is love.
It just dawned upon me that it probably is his son (in this video) he is drawing. He is trying to paint a picture of the way forward and does not know where things are going and how best to deal with them .. and the picture he is trying to draw is that of his relationship with his son. It looks like his son is living with his mother. The oilfields look like obstacles to the light off in the distance down a road, the light being presumably the path to his father. Conversely, Kenny also reaches out for his son. It's rather sad, but the message of love (heart) drawn by his son gives a glimmer of hope for the future despite their separation. After all, the song was actually written about his parents impending divorce.
I think it can be interpreted several ways. The child could be his inner child still living inside of him. The child could be his son. His child could be a little boy he's trying to help. He's drawing because it's so hard to express himself in words. Or he's drawing because that's the best way to communicate with a child who's language is simple.
Oh wow just started hearing this song 2months ago, thought to see if their was a music clip and surprized to only see 6 digit views. Such an under rated song. Very talented composer.

Nothing last forever unless both will it to until the end of time. Communication is essential to be together as one. Once the communion dies so does the warmth of companionship and it becomes a relationship of convenience. Heart to heart is a lost art form in today's modern era. So many homes lost that could have been saved if only one listen for understanding with genuine regard for the other. It's so tragic this message and more like this is lost in today's era. What you reap is what you sow.

One of my faves and still in rotation in my collection! 🔥💙 S/N for those that care to know.... The song speaks of the mutual opening of hearts as being the only way to preserve a relationship once the partners have allowed themselves to grow apart. The lyrics acknowledge that most relationships do not endure the test of time, yet still some are able to do so. -wikipedia

And then he turns around and totally changes it up and flips it around musically for a movie soundtrack and makes a major staple with Danger Zone for Top Gun. THAT'S talent. And had already nailed a prior movie soundtrack hit and seared it into the minds of many with the upbeat "I'm Alright" from Caddyshack! And a duet with Stevie Nicks just before that which was a major 70's hit. Talent like this today musically just doesn't exist in this synthetic, cookie-cutter digitally processed musical universe we live in today. Sorry.

Haha, that's funny 😂
You know it’s great music when you feel the exact same way you felt when you first heard it. An awesome artist.
Seriously underrated and classy early 80's masterpiece
Lyrics:
You ain't crazy
I ain't gonna lie anymore
What you're feelin'
There's a reason for
I wanna do right
Oh, gotta do right
Do I love you
Oh you know I've tried
But what you're after
You can't find in my eyes
I'm gonna do right
Darlin'
Tell the truth
Don't turn away
This is our last chance
To touch each other's heart
Does anything last forever
I don't know
Baby we're near the end (So darlin' tell me)
So darlin', oh
How can we go on together
Now that we've grown apart, oh no
Well, the only way to start
Is heart to heart
One by one
We're collecting lies
When you can't give love
You give alibis
Now, I'm gonna do right
This time I got to do right
I don't wanna leave
I don't wanna say goodbye
Sooner or later
Honey there comes a time
Mama, when you gotta do right
Come on, come on
Darlin'
Tell the truth
Don't turn away
From this one last chance to
Touch each other's heart
Does anything last forever
I don't know
Baby we're near the end (So darlin' tell me)
So darlin', oh
How can we go on together
Now that we've grown apart, oh no
Well, the only way to start
Is heart to heart
Why are you so torn apart
I need a little more
Loving in my heart
People say that love will grow
So how was I to know
Love that's come through years and years
Can't find a way back home anymore
Darlin'
Tell me the truth
Don't turn away
This is our final chance to
Touch each other's heart
Does anything last forever
I don't know
Baby we're near the end (so darlin' tell me, oh)
So, darlin', oh
How can we go on together
Now that we've grown apart
Well, the only way to start
Is heart to heart
Does anything last forever
I don't know but
But maybe we're near the end (So darlin' tell me)
So, darling, oh
How can we go on together
Now that we've grown apart
Well, the only way to start
Is heart to heart
