Its funny, because in 2009 there was an interview with Junichi Masuda where he said that Gamefreak preferred the 2d games since they enjoyed how much creativity and personality they could put in the sprites, and how a lot of that would be lost in 3d. This was exemplified in BW/BW2. However, those games were financial failures, and one of their biggest criticisms was that Gamefreak was lazy for staying in 2d when everyone else was switching to 3d. This is likely why XY made the jump, as in general XY was a response to the criticisms of BW/BW2. Also, back then most gamers in general were turning their back on 2d games, the enjoyment of 2d pixel games only came back in like the last 5 years due to indie games. If the gen 5 games were successful, Gamfreak may have stayed with making 2d games, which honestly could have increased their quality since the generations since are basically them figuring out how to do a 3d Pokemon game.

Sprites had the ability to capture a moment and an action pose for every Pokémon, showing their personality. 3D kinda lost that magic, but I think it is most due to some poor decision in animation behind the scenes, because it can look as good if not better! PS: FireRed was also my first Pokémon game
I started using pokémon sprites as patterns for cross-stitch embroidery and it totally changed my perspective on them. It gave me a new appreciation for the ones used in the pinball games, very cool to work with.

I would love for pokemon to make a new game that returns to 2D sprites. It doesn't have to be a mainline game, but if they were to go back to the gen 4 sprites and include newer pokemon, I would love it. Until they find a way to give the 3D models more personality, I don't think they will ever beat the sprites.
Gen 3 did Nosepass so dirty. Wth was even going on with its sprite? I was shocked when I first saw actual art of it. I had no idea it was so geometric. It just looked like a lump in the game.
