Xbox Series X Teardown: Totally Modular, Not As Repairable

- It’s been seven years since the Xbox One's release, and now we have the all-new Xbox Series X-not to be confused with 2017’s Xbox One X. Or was it the Xbox One Series X? Even Microsoft can't keep track sometimes. Naming scheme aside, this Xbox is all-new, with what Microsoft calls a “sleek monolithic” design. This Tower of Terror prioritizes cooling, and it’ll need it to render games in 4K at 120 fps. We’re curious whether this design for increased cooling comes at the expense of modularity or repairability, but that’s what we’re here to find out. Let’s tear it down!
Head on over to iFixit.com to check out the written teardown

It amazes me that something like this costs only $500 while an iPhone can cost over $1k
I believe the consoles are always sold at a loss, they recoup the investment after they hit certain amount of sales target.
i think its fair to say that consoles don't really put much r&d into new groundbreaking tech like phones do, its already there on pc. They also don't have to come up with new designs/ideas and tech updates every year, not sure for sony but xbox did say they sell consoles at a loss (at least initially) knowing they will generate profit from games & services, then eventually the consoles when the price of manufacturing drops
i phones are pretty overpriced too tho
Because you'll pay for the console in games. Buy a few games, and you'd already spend more than $500. With all the microtransaction, DLCs and so on.
also look at the size of the components on the phones
@@Notorious_BFG xbox consoles are basically pcs
There is something elegant about the design of the Xbox Series X. Down' to how they manage cables. It's all very intentional with zero wasted space.
Box go brrr
Also creates heat?
@@liamfeatherstone924 All modern computers that use electricity creates heat man. What matters more is the ability to move that heat and prevent it from getting too hot. Even cellphones create heat when in operation.
completely agree, go checkout the ps5 teardown, it's a mess compared to this..
PC user here so I couldn't care less for console fanboying but from an engineering point of view the Xbox looks a lot better from a internal design point of view and quality of materials, the PS5 honestly looks cheap in comparison.

To be fair, most likely the disc drive being locked to the console is a measure to prevent piracy using a modded disc drive. I'm sure this will be defeated, though.
as far as I know it wasn't on the one so it won't be here
Doubt that people will bother to beat the disc drive when gamepass is so cheap. MS these days are all online. Physical will be dead soon. Only reason to get physical is so that 10 to 15 years from now, you will be able to reboot it and play some retro games. Similarly there is no point for disc drive PS5 when digital only version will do the trick. Only hold back is, 6 years from now will PS5 still be able to run without PSN.
@@Battlecry45 one/ones/onex are different than series s and x
@@insanitylol in what sense? its the same disk drive. The Incentive to crack the drive is just gone. Nobody wants to download a 50GB image and burn it to Blu ray these days. Its probably cheaper to get gamepass
@@MrMannyhw Digital-only consoles are super weird IMO and not so customer friendly. This is only because you have only one shop with high prices. With the disc version, you can look up games from everywhere... Thousands of stores, used market, sales, etc. At least PC gamers have so many places to shop and you can even buy games from local stores. I used to buy all the games on day 1 for consoles and sell them a bit less after one week (about 45€). Now with digital versions, you have to pay high prices and then can't even sell them.
I'm way more impressed by the internal design, it's a beauty!

Sir, Cooling
I wasn't sure about the Series X when it was first announced. But it grew on me. After finally getting my hands on one I can say I really think it's one of, if not THE, sexiest piece of tech Microsoft has ever produced. Inside and out. Any engineer who worked on that design will have some seriously kickass resume material.
It feels like the engineers won an argument against the marketing people, going for a larger, more practical design which allows for better cooling efficiency (and higher clock speeds).

A really good video! Weird question: Could you make measurements of the plastic thickness? I'm trying to fit a PC inside the Xbox Series X dimensions
Nice teardown - though if you docked this down to a 7 for software locks, why did you give Apple's iPhone 12 series a 6 when EVERYTHING (display, battery, face ID, cameras etc) is software locked?
Is to avoid piracy
Thx for the video. That is what I call Next-Gen. No waste of space and design is simple + clear.
you don't need to manually partition SSD drive because OSU1 image restoring procedure already got this functional
I think its really important to show the user how to remove the power button ribbon cable. You skip over it in this video which lead me to believe it was simply a push pull cable. Now I need a new nexus connector and a new ribbon cable 😐
Surprised there is no really big heatsink inside
There is, they didn't show it in this video. It's a rushed teardown with minimal info...
4K at 120 fps! I doubt it. More like 4K "OR" 120 FPS. I have an 2080ti and even that's a bold claim
It's a very bold claim. However some games will be able to do 4k at 120 FPS such as Ori And The Will of the Wisps

Interesting that the internal M.2 SSD for the Xbox Series X is removable but at the expense of voiding your warranty.
But the Internal M.2 SSD on the PlayStation 5 is built-in on the motherboard and is allot faster. And the PlayStation 5 has a internal user upgradeable M.2 SSD drive slot to add more storage to the PS5 and isn't proprietary SSD's.
Overall I'm happy that both systems are using internal SSD's to allow game developers freedom to there creativity.
Overall gamers at the end of the day win on both sides. 🤓
just opening your product can't void the warranty at least in the U.S.
Peeling back the sticker does NOT void your warranty. That's just BS manufacturers were getting away with for years, those stickers are not legally binding on any consumer device. The FTC has said as much.
True. Is an interesting choice from both. A downside of the PS5 embedded ssd could be the natural tear of the unit. But that would just happen in a few years in a very busy environment, lots of installing and saving. Xbox will use more the sdd than a ps5; in the write operations, with the quicksave option so it makes sense to expect their units to degrade faster
But there's the issue where the PS5 will demand an SSD as fast as the on-board one or else you'll be shitting the unit. And fun fact: both Microsoft's proprietary expansion and an off the shelf one that would be suitable for the PS5 are both priced around the same (with a maximum gap of around $10 USD).
@@e39purist89 In 2 years, There will probably be enough good Ssds that can be used for ps5. Maybe even less than 2 years
Can you remove the green plastic piece that sits directly above the fan? I’d love to take mine out, paint it black and replace it. Its the only design choice i dont love.
The video does not mention fundamental details about the disassembly method - like the interlocking clips on the bottom round base (you have to twist it while holding the "hidden" clip....), or the types of brackets on both ribbon cables (one must be pushed, other - pulled). It looks like a how-to video to tear down the chassis, but in fact it is not, and that can be quite confusing for somebody looking for information on how to open it.
I was hoping it would be easier to replace the 1TB SSD
Excellent teardown and commentary. Thanks 🙏
Would replacing the bluray drive, actually do anything goof for the actual unit itself?
Funny the SSD is actually PCIE 3.0 not 4.0 and the nvme is a standard m.2 sata nothing special about the drive
Western Digital confirmed it is pcie 4.0 and custom to allow for 3.9 GBps
However what's special was the software technologies used in Xbox Series X. It uses DirectStorage which optimize the data transfer on SSD's
@@michaelsanchez1361 actually it doesnt without pci express 4.0
@@michaelsanchez1361 you will get a nice speed boost but that pcie is still limited
How do you guys feel about running a small fan behind the xbox near the hdmi/power/ethernet? I do it and can tell it keeps my xbox fresher. Huge difference from the heat it blows without it.
So did you break the plastic piece that covers the optical drive or what, I'm assuming you did because I still can't get it off and you cut straight past that detail?
How hard would it be to get the the 1TB SSD, and how hard would it be to format it?
That thermal design though.
I'm looking through how consoles deal with heat, and xbox both new and old seem to be just amazing at removing heat. Now if only i could find a way to use those methods in my pc build.
What's with the weird infrasound hum in this video? Makes it really hard to listen and leaves me on edge.
How many videos am I going to find that just straight up SKIP the two ribbon cables? Mine came from another DIY repairer broken, and I can't find a single video to show me how it should look, and work.
i don't get why they locked the optical drive, but then again it's not that hard to swap if you know what you're doing.
To prevent disc drive exploits. Xbox has history of security breach through disc drive by altering the firmware or modding the optical drive
optical drive linked to the system ?? Seriously why microsoft ?
Wasn't the installation of the OS on Xbox One S/X fairly simple task?
I am a pc gamer but the current situation with the gpu prices and so on made me consider this and when I bought it I was blown away by how quiet it is and how good the games look
Crazy how far consoles have gotten
The quietness is truly astonishing, especially when compared to the original PS4.
Same! I was debating upgrading my gaming PC but everything is so far out of reach to run truly 4k games the way I wanted so the Xbox X just made sense financially speaking. I couldn't be happier.
Xbox Series S is 9/10 repairable scale. "Easy to Teardown".
How did it score 7 when you cant replace anything without going through microsoft ?
edit: i mean its a repairability score not a teardown ease score...
If that's the case iphone 12 should get repairability score of 0.

Agreed, rating the wrong thing imo
@@MrMannyhw lol -5 is the correct value
If they got rid of the disk drive they could probably organize passive or nearly passive cooling in this case.
Taking apart my new xbox from December that lived through our house fire noticed I don't have the clipped on metal shield wonder if that was a mistake or if they took it out.
There's mainly three things of why I prefer the Series X over the PS5 in terms of physical unit:
1. Smaller.
2. It's dead silent. You'll literally only hear air moving (literally, not even the fan) when you're next to the unit with your head.
3. It feels like it's a solid block of metal - even though it's not. Like it feels *sturdy* .
Having said that I do like that Sony tried to go space-age, I just don't completely agree with the final result on some points plus... my unit isn't exactly 'silent'.
We need a guide on how to mod the case fan and SSD and how to do a full repaste
Great video and it’s awesome that that SSD drive is replaceable. I think it’s going to be a big point of contention for Sony, since theirs’s is soldered to the board. I’m wondering if that’s also going to be a problem for Microsoft and system security. Being that people can easily take that drive and put it in their PC and have access to the file system. I’m just wondering with this modular design, that in the future we may not see something that we can upgrade ourselves with mid-gen upgrade parts. Being able to Buy a kit and swap in faster processor‘s with more memory and possibly larger hard drives. Making it easy for anyone to upgrade through slots.
Regardless, I appreciate these videos as I love to see and learn about new technology and how it’s put together. This is a brilliant design from the team at Microsoft. I kind of wanna open mine up and take that green plate out above the fan and swap it for LEDs to actually light it up. Which would be ridiculously simple to do. You could wire it to the fan for the power. Though I don’t know if that would work correctly, because I’m not sure exactly how they control fan speed and if it correlates with more or less power draw. Though it might be a cool experiment, because then you would know by the brightness of your LEDs, just how fast the fan was spinning and how taxing the game you were playing was on the APU.
Can’t wait till we see the true power of these machines when developers come to grips with RDNA 2 and especially the Velocity Architecture.
They have an ssd expansion slot as well, and it isn't proprietary
The issue for the Series X is the vast majority of people (even PC people) will not be taking apart their consoles, but they're stuck with an expensive proprietary SSD upgrade path. I believe you can get a 4TB heatsinked Lexar NM790 drive for the price of a 1TB Xbox expansion drive.
The material from the inside looks to have way better quality compared to the ps5
are you planing a teardown of the new ipad air 2020?
It looks more like an appliance on the inside than a PC or console. Solid.
He did not show how to properly pull those two connectors off the board. They are easily damaged if not done so correctly.
Hey I was wondering if you knew if the SSD is married to the motherboard? I do repairs at our shop and I have a scrap series x I use for testing and I have another one come in with a bad SSD so I tried to use the one in my scrap unit but when I install it into the unit and power it on then it turns right back off. I moved the SSD back to the other unit and works just fine tried the bad SSD into my tester unit and it would power and go right back off So I was wondering if they are married to motherboard? Like the pcb board in the disk drive.

Hi, I broke the power button cable's board connector during disassembly. Is there a part number I can use to get a replacement on Mouser or Digikey?
How about switch ssd xsx to xss for more storage, interesting
1:49 Nice teardown but lacking tehnical information like what's the actual heat that comes out under which load and the fan noise if you got a fancy thermal camera ?
Is it possible to remove the blu-ray from the Xbox one s and put it in an external case for use with a computer or XBOX SERIES S ?
Seems like replacing the fan would be easy
The sticker you first removed isn't on my xbox it's just been replaced with plastic it seems
Just in theory would it be possible to upgrade to a faster SSD?
if someome finds a way to partition the drive.
I'd imagine you'd have a hard time finding a faster SSD that has that form factor
Series X/S only has 2 lanes PCIe 4.0, So meaning 2.4 is the max speed it will run.
Faster probably not, but higher capacities yes!
I think the SSD is already on the maximum speed the device can handle. So no.
What about removing the buttons from the case, like the USB port, sync & on button.
@iFixit got question,, where can I buy or find orginal screws for xbox series x ??
This looks much more durable than ps5 external and internal structure
The blue thermal paste like this on the ssd case - where can I buy it? Or something alike, seen this already on xbox one x and can not find it in store.
They are called thermal pads
For a 8 core console it should at least have two fans or an aio
Think mine came with a faulty Wi-Fi card as it disconnects from Wi-Fi for 2 seconds when on online games
So I guess my question would be, would taking off the back panel be enough to clean most of it, or do I want to go deeper to clean all the fans and heat sink?
How do you remove the flat flex cables safely? You skipped that :/
Larger of the two is a hinged connector, looking down from above, the silver part will flip up and away. Smaller connector is a push release (push on center of silver part) and gently pull ribbon using black tab. Once you get it out it has engraving saying to push but it's completely unreadable until you're past removing it lol. A plastic spudger works good for both clip types
Can you do a teardown of the Xbox Series S? Would love to watch it!
RUclipsr MVG did it first. It's much easier to disassemble.
How do you change putty can i use thermal pads instead?

You don't need to remove it to lay it on its side.
? You can lie it down on its side with the stand on or off. What are you talking about?...🤔
Only reason why I find these tear-downs interesting is b/c it allows me to clean up the console from the inside. The Xbox One was an absolute PAIN to tear open & you had a massive risk of breaking the plastic or some wires, but with the Series X, it looks to be incredibly easy. Especially if we're just talking about cleaning the vent & heatsink. I definitely don't need to worry about that.
I haven't cleaned my Xbox One is 6 years. It's still working fine, but at this point I don't want to risk it even though I know there's probably a ton of dust collected inside.
Couldn't get one of these because it's always sold out so I just bought a pc with a 3060 ti playing at 240fps 👌👌
