- Опубликовано: 17 окт 2024
- Today's video we are installing the tins, fuel pump, alternator stand and oil deflector, oil cooler and oil cooler seals, alternator and fan.
We will be turning it over to build oil pressure, installing the spark plugs and then finally firing it up for the first time for the cam break in.
This is a mini stroker build by taking a 1641cc engine and replacing the stock 69mm crank and installing a 74mm crank. We are mostly using used, but in spec parts for this engine build to help keep costs down.
This build would be good for a type1 beetle, type 2 bus and a type 3 square back or fast back.
Follow along as this multi part series will help guide you step by step through the engine building process.
Thank you for watching.

Excellent tips. I didn't realize the metal intake gaskets help transfer heat to the intake runners to aid in keeping the fuel in suspension. It's science! Great video Gary 👍
@@christianmccollum1028 we all learn something new every day!
I didn’t really think about it until I was having a conversation with VW Darrin lol
Gary,
Really enjoyed this one and you’ll be glad to know you’ve inspired me to get out in my garage and drop the engine out of my oval on this gloomy Sunday morning here in the UK 🇬🇧
Nothing wrong with taking time to relax but nothing gets done if we don’t at least start.
You got this!!
1:14 "I'm not an expert, I just do things" NEXT SHIRT HAS BEEN CREATED! 😁😁
Haha, you might be right!
Great tip on the fuel pump base! Don't mind me commenting multiple times I'm writing as I'm watching:)
Thanks! Learned that years ago and doing this has saved me from breaking that spacer off in the block.
@@VWJawbreaker i wonder how many engines are out there with that bakelite stuff floating around the oil gallies 🤣
@@V8N8T haha, I don’t even want to think about it!!
Nicely done! It’s great that your “blow-up” was external as opposed to internal! 😅. I’m glad that you showed the plunger comparison, as I have a few of those in my spare parts storage and I would hate to toss one on the wrong style engine. Thanks, and Lord be with you guys during the storms this week brother!!
Thank ya sir.
Yeah I knew better but totally blanked I guess. Figured someone could learn something from my screw up.
I appreciate ya greatly, we should be ok here. It’ll pass us pretty close but only as a cat 2.
Congratulations Gary what a nice little Mill!
Thank ya sir!!
Way to power through! I really like the garage engine builds!
I’ve always believed of if I can show something that is useful, it will be in the video. Even my screw ups.
Good morning Gary! Firstly, I am so glad you were able to get a few extra accoutrements for jawbreakers engine. It looks really good with that MS2, the pulleys and the tins! Please stay safe tonight guys, you are in our prayers!
Good morning dude!
I want to say thank you again for all of the conversation and assistance. You’re a good man and I appreciate you greatly.
We have a plan a, b and c all in place so we should be good. 👍
@@VWJawbreaker Hope your plans work out Gary.
good to hear you have these plans in place!
@@martinharris5017 absolutely, riding it out now.
Glad to see jawbreaker will be back on the road soon. Also even more happy that you are back in your groove of making videos I have learned alot from watching you. Thank you sir and have a great day!
@@75ratbug93 soon-ish lol Still a ways to go but thanks! I sure miss driving her.
Definitely working hard to balance everything going on yet still put out some content.
Appreciate ya being here!
You're hitting home runs, with these engine builds.👏👍👍
Thank you sir!
Hi Gary, you gave me a scare, I was really looking forward to the break-in video! Was great that you included the diagnosis of the oil cooler failure, mental note made. Looking forward to seeing the progress on "jawbreaker" and yes, you're keeping me inspired and working on my build too! Thank you! Hope all is well with you and your dear ones are safe through milton.
@@edrowley1 well to be honest it kinda scared me as well. I can’t make a mistake and not share it. We all learn something new every day. I knew better but it slipped by me somehow.
Glad you’re inspired, that gives me motivation to keep on!
We’re good here, thank you! Just power and minimal damage.
Really excited to see Jawbreaker back on the road soon. Lovin' the blue tins!
Hopefully on the near future!
Good stuff, Gary! She's gonna look so good in Jawbreaker.
I think it will also!
Appreciate ya!
❤nice
It is beautiful, although it is close to the stock engine, with lower costs, fewer breakdowns, and simpler maintenance.
That’s the hope anyway.
Appreciate ya being here.
Factory springs and plungers are the way to go although I've been tempted to try one of those Adrian check balls to replace the plunger
Totally agree buddy.
I’ve seen that check ball and it has peaked my curiosity for sure.
Looks and sounds great, even with the squealing belt, lol. You do inspire me every vid you do. I wish I had half your knowledge, but it’s amazing that you share it on here
That right there is why I post videos. If I can inspire someone to tackle their project then it was worth the effort.
Not an explosion, but man it sounds good, Good work and stay safe with the hurricane
I’m surprised how good it sounds for being mostly stock.
Will do, it’s coming ashore tonight!
@@VWJawbreaker is it a stock cam, and are you planning of staying or leaving due to the weather
@@BeamNGPlayer007 yep, covered that in the build series. Stock cam
We are staying since we are inland
@VWJawbreaker so are the barrels in this motor that of a 1641 and with a stroker cam, if so your completely right with it being a semi stock motor.
@@BeamNGPlayer007 yes, basically a stock 1641 with a 74mm crank that makes it a 1760
My parts-around-the-house conversion has the 87mm pistons mated with the VW Microbus 2.1 crank, which is 76mm into the stock 1600 bug case...
Though I've yet to see what this mix does, the same crank on 85.5mm stock bug pistons already packs a huge punch over stock 1600 engine...
Coolest part is that with its 34PICT-3 carb any skilled eye is sold on it being a stock 1600 lol...until they try to catch me 😁
Absolutely! Larger crank over stock will definitely help the power and keeps everything looking stock.
Gotta love a sleeper!
Nice one Gary! I like seeing the stuff that doesn't work out. haha. It's always a good lesson to see that stuff, helpful for everyone! Good info on the oil relief valve plunger/spring.
Sometimes a simple mistakes helps us all learn more than anything else. Why would I hide it and not pass on the learning to others? I can’t do that.
Appreciate ya Annie!!
Tuning in all the way from Indonesia!
Thanks for being here, I appreciate you!
Awesome, the blue looks great. Can't wait to see it in jawbreaker. Great job making it all work together.
Thank you sir and thank you for the parts to help make it happen!!! I greatly appreciate you both
Quite a surprise with the oil cooler. It’s sure nice, catching problems on the stand instead of in the car.👍
Definitely better to catch it on the stand. It was my fault and we moved past the issue.
Hope all is well my friend.
Thank you for showing and explaining engine building. I always love to watch your videos. Be safe
@@joechapin4897 glad you enjoyed it and thanks for being here!
You have a nice little runner and a good color of blue! She sounds Great! A little squeaky just like a bug.
I think it’ll be a great lil engine!
Thanks for being here.
Good deal Gary, glad it was something small, can’t wait to see it in the car.
Thanks! Working on that video now!
Fun video. Just what I do on belts (cam or alt), tighten until you can just turn the longest run 90 degrees. Keep up the fun!
I usually adjust them the same way except for the serpentine belt setups. If those are too tight they will ruin the nose bearing in your engine and your alternator.
Sounds Amazing! Wishing you safety from the storm.
@@matthewchilders5263 thank you much!
So far so good but we have a ways to go.
Hey Gary, she sounds sweet, pullys and paint very nice man, hope your all good, stay safe,👌
Thanks man!
Sounds awesome Gary !!! Thanks for the video.
Thanks you sir.
Great job! Motor sounded excellent! Looking forward to future videos and builds..🤘😁
@@jeffgoodbar thanks, I appreciate you and the support!
That there is a pretty engine ! Look'n GOOD .
I’m just glad it runs as good as it looks lol
Great episode Gary, Keep 'em coming, all the best from here in the UK 👍
Thank you much!!
Fyi I've got a part number for replacement bearings for the mst tensioner. My original tensioner pulley barely lasted 2k miles and my belt was not over tight
Oh yes, please share that part number if you don’t mind!!
Wow; early upload! Bummer on the oil cooler but glad you caught it immediately. Stay safe with this hurricane coming; doesn’t look good. Wish you the best to you and your family and hope we all get spared.
Yeah, we live and learn. That’s what I get for not thinking when I put in the relief plugs.
We shall buddy. We have a plan a, b and c in place. Appreciate you as always!
What a bummer dude, At least its not a pricey fix. But the motor does look sweet with that blue :)
Luckily I had a used cooler to toss on. She ran great after that though.
Another great video! Well done. I have that same exhaust on a worn out 1500 in the Veep. The more I run it the better it sounds.
@@charlesloar3210 thanks! I’m excited to take it for a spin and see how it does.
The exhaust was “modified” by a solid rod through the tips years ago and it sounds great. I like them for some reason lol
Stay safe brother!!!
@@jeremyshideler4187 will do!
I have motorcycle hand grip warmers added to the back of the IDF body to assist with warmongering. Maybe something like that could be enough for you living in Florida.
Edit: warming 😀
You mean warming. I hate warmongering too 😉
@@vayabroder729 lol, that's awesome!
That’s a great idea, I’ll look into that!

Well done mate 👏 👍 👌
Thanks 👍
Looks really nice and sound amazing. I hope that you and your people are ok after Hurricane Milton.
Thanks! It should be a good running combo.
We are ok luckily. No power and minor damage but we’re fine. ❤️
We love it to ! The best part is all of it ! All is alright with this crazy weather for you and your family ? One more question how's your father doing ?
I absolutely love it when they breathe their first breath and come to life.
We faired quite well from the storm. Minimal damage and no power but overall very fortunate.
Dad is hanging in there so far.
Great work , shit happens it's how you deal with it that matters . i liked how you dealt with it Gary 👍
That statement right there applies to everything in life. It’s not what happens but how you respond to it.
Appreciate you being here.
Love it!!! Keep it comin!!
Thanks for being here!
Great build ...
Thanks!
Looks great.
Thanks!
looks good
Thanks!
As you know, I’ve just got myself a 1970 beetle. This will definitely be used, or jawbreakers engine build, to build a new engine for the beetle (although it’s got a good engine). Is the mst pulley setup the same one you originally used on jawbreaker? It’s the exact same one I put on my bus and got that ordered shortly after seeing you use it 2 or 3 years ago! Looking forward to seeing jawbreaker again!
That’s what I hope for, people can use this as a reference to help with their builds.
The mst pulley setup was a gift from someone who had it sitting around.
I’m very fortunate to have been gifted some parts and donations that made this build even possible.
I like the blue. I like watching the builds, interesting seeing the engineering that goes into these VW engines. How did you do with Milton? We were in Orlando at Disneyworld and rode out the storm. Not much damage there. Hopefully you came out good..
Who would have though ford blue would look good on a VW lol
We did ok. Minimal damage and no power for a few days.
Hope you enjoyed what you could of your vacation.
Great video Gary .Just curious what does an oil cooler run today.😢.Never bought a new one so I'm just curious sir
Thanks man.
You can pick them up for $50-60
Good morning Gary where to you recommend to buy the oil cooler from i see you going to put one in thank you and i enjoy your channel be safe out there.....
Good morning!
They’re all about the same, you can purchase them anywhere. This was not an oil cooler failure from a faulty oil cooler.
Thank you
😮 @ the new oil cooler!! Shoot! I used that booster oil relief pressure on mine... i hope i dont run into this problem 🤦🏻♂️😬
Keep a close eye on your oil pressure with the booster spring especially on a new build where tolerances are tighter.
And DON’T use the booster spring with the wrong plunger like I did.
Did u fix the oil cooler or replace it ?
@@75vw replaced it with a used one I got from someone.
Another one up and running! Great job. I’m curious, did you install the hoover bit, on the oil cooler?
You know, I totally forgot about that till you said something.
Sweet deal dude. I’m curious how you diagnosed the problem. In other words how did know where to look? How did you know it was the oil pressure relief valve. The valve was wrong but what about the spring? What size spring do you use? I feel I should check my single relief case to make sure I have the right parts.
Thanks man.
Well, since the pressure built up and didn’t go back down that have me a starting point to check the valve by the flywheel for a stuck plunger. Plunger was not stuck but that’s how I found what I did… we all make mistakes.
Spring wise, the stock spring is softer than the booster spring. The booster spring is also chrome so that’s a dead giveaway also.
So, between the stiff spring and the plunger being too long, it never had a chance to release the excess pressure.
This applies to the dual relief cases.
Single relief case operates differently. Although you can still put in a stiff spring and have issues in a single relief case.
Question for you (assuming you are still in one piece after that hurricane...) What's your experience with electric fuel pumps? Any preference between the stock mechanical pump and an electric replacement?
E Bikes... I don't get it either. I'm a pedal power guy :)
Well, we’re smack in the middle of it and I’m here lol
I’ve had the best luck with the Carter rotary pump (can’t research the part number right now) It only puts out 2.5psi of pressure. Works fantastic and is worth the money. Much better than the click clack pumps, quieter also.
Excellent video . And I build one 1700 engine and the part of the plunger mistake help me safe a blew an brand new oil coler. You use a regular oil plunger ? Thanks
Glad you enjoyed the video!
No, I accidentally used the wrong plunger so I swapped it out for the one in the pic.
Are those button head screws holding the tins on phillips, allen, or torx headed? I have a hatred for the flat head screws that are factory.
These are Allen head bolts. Seem to work pretty well so far. Used several on the Sickxty build as well.
@@VWJawbreaker I too have the stock style bolt and was looking for something different on my build. Love the look of the button heads. Did you just get them from the big box store or ordered them online.
@@brianboulis4046 believe these came from Amazon but you can get them anywhere.
Any aspirations of squirting some pigment color on jaw breaker ?
Probably not, I’m kinda fond of how it currently looks.
Nice motor! What’s your ideal build up?
Thanks!
That’s a loaded question, all depends on what you want out of the engine and the intended purpose.
you need a vacum distributor as cylinders build vacum to keep all spark set in loads on and more set speeds -up and down R.P.M.
True however these Magnaspark distributors are better imo. They are fully customizable and you can lock it out and hook up their black box which you can build custom spark tables and also reference vacuum and boost signals.
Ur friend framed you with a Fram Filter 😅. Real men use Mann Filters 🤨. Just being silly! Love the Blue theme!
Haha! Growing up I used nothing but farm filters, back when they were good anyway lol
Is that Ford Blue on the shroud and tins?
Good eye, yes it is!!
@@VWJawbreaker I had a 2.8L V-6 that I rebuilt and powder coated all the sheet metal and bracketry in the same Ford Blue.
good idea and make it work . go for M.P.G. SO YOU not scam on gas price
This should get good mpgs
nice budget rebuild. how much pressure do you got warm and cold ( in Bar please) mine has around 3.2 cold and 0.8 warm.
and stay safe please.
You’re good at those pressures. Rule of thumb is .6 bar per 1k rpm at operational temps.
@@VWBEETLEOVAL1955 when the oil cooler blew on this start up, I had 8.6 bar of oil pressure…. lol
@@VWJawbreaker ok thnx, I was wondering, because I had to switch the plunger with a other one. The old one was not fitting well and the pressure light came on when idleing.
@@VWJawbreaker yep that explains the blow up of that cooler. Strange that the oil filter didn’t blew up?
@@VWBEETLEOVAL1955 yeah that was strange but I guess the cooler was weaker than the filter.
