VW Engine Long Block Assembly- How To- Air Cooled Mini Stroker Build -1760cc- Pt 4
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 ноя 2024
- Today's video we are going over the top end assembly process including setting deck height, head porting from VW Darrin, CC the heads, piston and cylinder prep including ring gap, compression ratio, valve train geometry and flywheel end play.
This is a mini stroker build by taking a 1641cc engine and replacing the stock 69mm crank and installing a 74mm crank. We are mostly using used, but in spec parts for this engine build to help keep costs down.
This build would be good for a type1 beetle, type 2 bus and a type 3 square back or fast back.
Follow along as this multi part series will help guide you step by step through the engine building process.
Thank you for watching.

Thanks for being here 🤙
Finally got to finish up the video! LONG BLOCK IS DONE! Health and happiness to your family!
@@TheJorgSacul appreciate you sir!
Have a great week!
I love seeing respect brought back to VW motor building! Seems like there's a rut that became the norm of used motors with band-aids and fresh painted tins when it came to stock motors. Maybe it's the fact that the used motor worth running market is drying up but there seems to be a new movement of quality builds whether stock or slightly spicy. Thanks for sharing the skills, tips and tricks with the rest of us!
I agree with you. Unfortunately though, with the costs of everything, even used motors that are shot are expensive as all get out. Seems most people want more power and the stock engines are becoming less and less. Then again, if you’re doing a complete rebuild, building a larger engine isn’t much more expensive.
Great to see Darrin still working his magic. * Hot tip with installing valve guides: Put the guides in the freezer until you're ready to press them in, they'll go in easy and the lock in place as they warm up.
Yes sir, was awesome spending the day with him.
We did put the guides in the freezer and put the head on a hot plate, drive the guides in pretty easy 🤙
Thanks Gary. Good to see Darrin. He doesn't put out nearly enough footage. Glad you and CT can get him on camera.
Yes sir I agree. He kinda feels like he’s beating a dead horse doing the same stuff over and over. I get it, there’s things I do and don’t record. Just wanted to make sure he got proper credit for the work he put in.
@VWJawbreaker a lot of you guys don't see the value in recording everything. I think every build is unique and has something to offer. Call me an aircooled fanboy.
@@hardware5777 oh I agree with you to an extent! However I had to change out the fuel sending unit on the Sickxty to a different style, a universal style sender. I didn’t record it. It’s just swapping out a sending unit. Some people record every little thing they do but I just can’t do that. I feel I waste peoples time.
As for an engine build, I only highlight certain areas as you wouldn’t want me to post the raw video, it would be 5-6 hours long easy lol
@VWJawbreaker I guess my thing is I was too stupid as a kid to take advantage of a guy who was a Darrin level resource in my hometown. I regret not working for him for free in exchange for knowledge. So now I soak up everything I can from every source I can. There's no such thing as " too much footage "
@VWJawbreaker and we missed out on why you had to change it. See?
I always learn so much about air-cooled with your videos. Reminds me of building engines with my dad and brothers when growing up... good memories.
Thea VW’s always bring back memories in one way or another!
I swear Gary you and I must have been separated at birth. We are thinking the same again😅. Great work!
Haha, I was watching your latest video and thinking the same since I had just finished the long block lol
LONG BLOCK IS DONE!!! WOOT WOOT. (all caps to show my enthusiasm for ya. 😂)
Awesome, I appreciate the enthusiasm!!
Thank You on the tip about the nylon nuts
Yep! They bit me in the back side a few times.
Long block is done. And dude, I love that you pay respect to others that help. And love all the great information in your videos. It makes me wanna hire you to build me an engine. Lol
If I can’t show respect to those who deserve it, no one will respect or help me. I believe in spreading good karma and doing others right. Eventually it’ll come back to you as well. We can’t do everything alone, we need help from others often. That’s how we learn and grow.
It took a little over 6 months to rebuild mine. I dont mind waiting a bit on this one. 🤙
It kills me to have to put it off to the side when we’re this close but it is what it is. I’m not good at waiting but I’m trying lol
Plus I’ve had my buddy’s stuff sitting here for a while so I need to get his going.
Looks good, you are one of the best you tubers on this platform, Can't wait to see it run best of luck👍🏻

Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me!!
Thanks for the videos you make, doing my first ever rebuild - stock .
Good luck and enjoy the process!
Can’t wait to hear it Gary! 🙌🏻
Me too brother! Should be tame though since it has a stock cam.
@@VWJawbreaker yeah, but the ported heads and extra displacement should be noticeable. Wish I had my heads ported.
Great assembly, Gary! I'm glad you showed Darren's porting job...as it gives me a good look at how a pro does it and does it right. I'm also glad & reassured that the stock-length push-rod geometry worked out like it did (It also did with my 74 stroker as well) - I kept thinking, did I do this right?, surely an extra 5mm would require it?...but with my swivel feet and a smidge of clearancing on the rocker, it worked out nicely. I need to do a start-up/project book-end vid on my engine, but I've been so busy and haven't made the time to. Great Job!
I wish I got more video of him working or did a dedicated video on just the heads but I was trying to keep things moving along and not trying up too much of his time.
I’d love to see yours fire up so hurry up with that and stop letting responsibilities get in the way 😝
Long Block Is Done! Very Cool!

I used an cw cranh, and pistons crashed with it. But with your crank it may noy have any problem. Excellent work, man!

Great work, Gary. Just check that universal dipstick is glued correctly. i had one fail and had to reglue it with a two part epoxy glue.
Excellent video, mate 👌 👍.
@@brenton-lucas good tip man, the tube is a little loose in the base. Will probably do the exact same. 🤙
@VWJawbreaker I used some sandpaper to rough up the bottom of the tube and the hole the tube goes into to give the epoxy something to grip to, then put the epoxy on the tube and a bit in the hole.
Waited for the epoxy to set and got some glass and sandpaper and sanded the epoxy off level on the mating surface 👍👍👍.

Hi, Gary, thanks for posting all those videos ! Some of them helped me assemble my new engine, 92 x 69, all new parts from CB Performance, runs great. I know you are in Florida, don't know exactly where, hope you will not be affected by Helene ! Good luck !
@@michaeltetzner5847 that’s awesome man, glad the videos helped you out! That makes all the effort with it imo.
Thank you for the concern, where I’m at it’s just winds and rain. Worse case I’ll hook up the generator and fire up the bbq!
Long block is done. Another great video! I never thought of going with a larger crank on a 1641. My next ninja may be 1760 as well
Thanks!
Apparently not many people around me have thought of it either. Figured it’s not difficult to try lol
Thank for being here 🤙
@@VWJawbreaker do you have to clearance the case or cam for a 74 mm crank
@@natevolkschevy2955 so you didn’t watch part 1? 😂
Yes, with stock rods you will need to clearance the case. With aftermarket rods, that video will be out this Wednesday, you’ll barely have to do any clearance work.
No on the cam with both setups. .
@@VWJawbreaker I thought I watched the part one video of the 1760. Some days I am so tired and fatigued from my construction job but I don't always get all the details.
@@natevolkschevy2955 totally understandable! The summers down here in Florida wears me out every day… only getting worse as we get older unfortunately.

#longblockisdone! Thats awesome Gary great vid! Nice little tool attachment for the magnetic mount. Your going to have a sweet runner when its all said and done:) oh btw id rock the factory rockers on that its not off by that much to be honest
Thanks man, I appreciate it! I think it’ll be a sweet combo, should give a nice bit of extra torque and hp for what it is.
I probably wouldn’t mind running a stock set of if I had them laying around but this is all I have. A little overkill for the valve train isn’t a bad thing 😂
@VWJawbreaker oh haha I ment to say stock push rods, can't go wrong with solid shaft rockers!
@@V8N8T ok I feel better lol
That one time at band clamp.........
😂
Hi Gary, love your videos. When you get to the point of timing, can you show how the static time before break-in, thanks.
You got it man!
Long Blockhead is done.
Wait, you calling me a blockhead? I resemble that remark 😝
Appreciate ya sir!!
What were the symptoms of the heads when they were on the engine?
@@Mr69volks keepers kept coming off of the valves. They replaced the keepers once then it happened again. They even verified there was a gap between the 2 keepers. Darrin said it was due to the guides being bad since it only happened on the intakes.
I have decided after I rebuild the 40 and the 90 corvair engines will get a good 1600 to build a 1776. If that goes well will up the game after that. If only I could get valve guides? haha
You’ll get them eventually.
I have faith in ya man!
EMPI just got some so reserved them for now. I bought a bunch of other stuff already for other projects
Decided to measure the old guides and bores. Need a good interference fit so may need oversize
Question: do you ever use the type 3 engine cylinder head tin as it is so hot in Florida? Mike Fn talked about using those to keep things cool. Excellent video, thanks!
I did on a previous engine years back. They worked ok and I can’t say they were any better or worse than the stock air deflectors.
Maybe revisit with 1.4 and cut to fit rods.
I’d love to if I run across a set for cheap.
@VWJawbreaker right, I picked up some scat 1.4 at a swap meet for cheap last summer. 🤙
@@OwhyeeVdub I’ll be looking once the swap meets start back up.
Nice information.👍 What did you get for ring gap on the 87mm pistons? Long block is done.
I shoot for .012-.018” for ring gap.
Long block is.....😊
Haha, appreciate ya sir!!
Top brazil
🙏
Log block is done...
Thanks for being here as always 🤙
Excuse me, did you turned the engine with pistons?? ? I had clearance issues on mine...
Yes I did, that’s why I used rubber bands to hold the rods in place.
There was clearance work done on the previous mock up video and you can see the areas in the case I had to work on this video.
Why does 7.5:1 compression seem low?
Stock is 6.8-7.2…. So it’s kicked up a tad.
Remember, VW’s are like your typical small bocks 😂

Hey Gary ! I watched Dub-wrks video and you don't know what you are doing ? He did a total rebuild with only valve cover gaskets and a can of spray paint . I have stop watching Mustie , 5150 , VW nut and dubwrks because they are just doing the videos for $$$$$ . Down Here in South Texas the min. is a Mex overhaul new bearings new rings , gaskets and a true valve job . because between towns here it's hundreds of miles . P.S. the motor is for Levi aint it ? I hear what you’re saying, I do. Just simply saying that I don’t know it all and others are also great at a lot of things as well.
I stopped watching dubs around the time he posted that video….
Personally, if I have to pull the top end of an engine apart, you might as well split the case and verify everything. You’re only out some time, cleaner and sealant for the most part.
