tasty playing. Would sound great recorded with a 57 into a boiled vegetable. Ku5A sounds more scooped mids and more low lows, the md441 more nasal mids and less pretty top and bottom. Agree with comment below that the two mics would be good together.
700 views? This is a great quality demo man, great players and sounds. That 441's gotta be next on my list. It's the dynamic that doesn't sound like a dynamic, street prices are half the price. I'm dumping my 57's REAL quick haha. The KU5A does sound killer though. Thanks!
Thanks man! The 57 can be useful for bringing out some dirt and crunch, but I'd only use it blended with a higher-quality dynamic or ribbon. I love the 441 myself; the KU5A is a little more true to life but the 441 makes everything sound like it's been dipped in chocolate syrup.
They are very different beasts tone-wise, but I chose to compare them because they're in a similar price range, are known for being applicable across a wide range of instruments, and are both very useful tools for live recordings. They would be unstoppable blended together, but I'm usually using them in situations where all mics on hand are pointed at something different so I don't often have that luxury.
Really great playing all of you guys, but it's really hard to tell which mic I like better, since the parts were always different. Would have been easier with repeating parts.
From the AEA site: "Sources within 3 inches of the KU5A will benefit from the warm tonality of its proximity effect, and the mic can handle 141+ dB SPL at 1kHz. High volume sources will not damage the KU5A’s interior components, so the mic can be positioned just inches from a guitar or bass amp. However strong bursts of air may damage the ribbon, so exercise caution when positioning it in front of a kick drum."
Came for the comparison, stayed for the gorgeous playing by all involved.
That's the idea!

Thanks A LOT for the 48k WAVes...!
These mics almost couldn't be more different for this application. Honestly they'd probably work well together blended.

AEA is revelatory!
Ku5A more open, 441 more direct. I was thinking of going fir the 441 for guitars.
Can the Ku5a handle pretty high SPL for guitars? I do alot of heavier rock/punk/metal stuff and thinking about getting this instead of a Royer.

The real difference is in agility; i.e. dynamic tracking. The MD-441 sounds thick, like it's wearing rubber boots. The KU5A all day!
ugh...that grip of the KU5A....it's like the amp is threedimensional und drippy/creamy...G.A.S. incoming....
Agreed! You really get a sense of depth and realism with the KU5.
