@@meistudiony I was watching a RUclips video last night with Glen Campbell and Leon Russel, and damned if they weren't singing into 441s! I wasn't sure at first, but then the close ups were definitely Senn wacko mic clips, and I knew from the square shape and having just watched this video exactly what they were. ruclips.net/video/fNtxlKmNUFk/видео.htmlsi=i3Ed33s5HI1Zkdco
Been waiting for THIS one! I bought 6 of these brand-new a few years ago, and glad I did. such an amazing mic. like you mentioned, a lot of people don't take advantage of the filters (which was a selling point for me) great video (as always) nice use of the new Royer bar, btw...I just might get one of those. I have several of the Grace designs mic bars (highly recommended)
Thanks for checking it out. The 421s are nice also. This one takes the ideas of the 421 a bit further with an even more odd design. Def one of my faves in the cabinet.
In just ‘fixed’ my MD 441 U by tightening that single screw. Amazed that it tightened up the whole mic! Now I know why. Nice review. I have started to use it a lot and find for certain vocals I love it over my AKG C414B/ULS. I like the way it handles plosives and sibilance. I’ve also used it for cab mic’ing and think I prefer it over the SM57. But, conventional wisdom tells me I need a ribbon mic to add to my locker!
You cant go wrong with a R121. Best ribbon mic ever imo. The 441 is probably the most perfect sounding dynamic on the market that Ive used (ive used a lot but not all of them still wanna hear a 224). And yea, having a single screw hold that entire mic together is nothing short of an engineering miracle. Insane design yet so efficient. Crazy. Thanks for checking it out!
One of my personal faves. Had to save up a long time to get my first one. This was my go to for snare for over a decade. The m201 is parked on the snare now and haven't found anything that does a better job... yet. Thanks for checking out the video! Appreciate it!
As soon as i can find one thats in working order. Thought i had one nailed down about a week ago... the low end part of the capsule was shot though... all high end... sounded terrible. Still looking!
Yep... that one is harder to find than the D224! Theres a guy near me selling the D3400 (not 2 way) and your comment made me go back and look that up on CL. I was able to get my hands on a second D200E and i was able to test out the one that I have and looks like the only issue with either of them is the rubber that isolates the capsules from the body is just OLD and no longer provides the reduced handling noise it once did. Capsules are still working well though! I have an iron in the fire for a D224E, but we'll see how crazy people get with the price. Thanks for watching!
I loved how it sounded on your voice. In the comparisons I liked it on the piano over the 47, and I liked it on electric over the 57. But I preferred the SM81 and M201 over this mic in those comparisons. Dave Rats video is so good. It made me pull the mic back out because I want to love it I just really don’t like the sound of it for me.
I may have said it before, i think something isnt quite right with yours. Do the boost and low cut work? The mic should sound quite good on your voice. Ive seen things online where something dislodged inside the mic can cause a weird midrange and bottom end cut.
@@meistudiony do you think that semester would take the mic on for service and send a faulty unit back out? If so, I may have to get my hands on another one. Maybe I can get sennheiser to lend a brand new verified one out so I can do a re-review of it or at least determine if mine is busted.
@@BandrewScott ive never had to use their service. From what i understand its supposed to be good, but as you know mistakes can and do happen. When i heard your video i was kind of taken aback. Just didnt sit right to me.
Have one but need to get it repaired. The DIN socket outlet is loose and have ripped off som internal wiring. And (last time I looked must have been 15 years ago) the high boost selector has disintegrated and the low cut ring is just spinning. -Wonder if I could bypass the filters but maybe its not a good idea… The rest of it seems to be in good shape. Maybe pay for a professional repair, if I could find a trustworthy workshop.
Thats a lot going on. Might be worth seeing if someone can make it right. The mic sells for around $1k. Likely the set screw for the switch has just come loose since its just a ring unless the entire mechanism is completely broken. The treble switch is also an easy fix and commonly broken. Mine had broken years ago as well and was fixed just prior to me to doing the video. Worth a trip to google to see if there are any shops in your area. Thanks for watching!
I guess the bass roll off is nice in a live situation. But with a nice preamp I don't think that mic is necessary if you already own similar microphones. If you own some U87, C414, Sm7b, sm57 etc. I don't think this is necessary. Now if have no mic this will cover many sources indeed
Dont discount the use of the rolloff in the studio. I used to use this mic for snare and rolling off the bottom effectively mitigated the kick drum bleed where i didn't have to deal with much in post. When this mic came out it was in a class almost by itself. Now a days... yeah there are a lot of other options that can fill its shoes for almost the same price or less. Thanks for checking it out! Appreciate it!
I have one from the 70s and one from around 2018 or so, theres pretty much no difference. (no more difference than any two bought today or back then). So if anyone is selling this at a premium because its "vintage", you're not getting anything more special or different.
I am learning that mic lovers are just wine lovers without the fun of getting drunk. Why on god's earth would anyone think this mic is that much different than a ten times cheaper $100 SM57?
From a basic standpoint, both mics pick up sound and in that respect, you're correct. Is this mic overpriced? Id say no, only because of the insane engineering inside (and outside) of it. A lot of tooling and machining needed to produce this. But why choose something thats $1000 over one thats $100 that seems to do the same thing? Again, from a basic perspective they do. When you start to get into more of the finer details, you find that things aren't the same at all past that basic concept. Off axis rejection is important in certain professional situations and the two mics handle that VERY differently. Frequency response on the two is also very drastically different as well. The Shure having very harsh upper frequencies whereas the sennheiser isn't as drastic. This is a matter of how much work you want to do in post to get the subject you're recording to sit within a mix. For spoken word, it doesn't matter as much, especially if theres no comparison between the sound of X vs Y. The sennheiser also has filter controls built in which the Shure doesn't. In certain circumstances, having a bass rolloff may be required. If you aren't able to handle that on the receiving side, having this on the mic is a godsend. The Sennheiser also has voicing controls for the top end to either flatten or enhance it. Shure implemented something very similar on the SM7B, but nothing on the 57. Again, for basic everyday use, yeah, go for a 57 or 58. For studio/live professional work, go with something that is more tailored to your use case. This is why we dont just have ONE microphone that just picks things up for sale. (also why there is more than one type of wine to drink ;) ) Does it have to be a $1000+ mic, no, but I can think of a lot of situations where the $100 won't pass in a professional situation. End of the day, a choice like this is made in response to a working situation. If this mic save time in getting things right, well, time is money. If the money it saves exceeds the cost of the product, then it's worth it! Why would someone buy a Mercedes vs a Toyota? They both get you to where you're going. In this case I'd argue for the cheaper of the two vehicles since the cost of maintenance on the Toyota is significantly less than the Mercedes. Neither is going to get me to my destination any faster, so the cost comparison is out the window in regards to Time vs. Money. (especially in NY traffic lol) Both scenarios are quantifiable in their own regards and is up to the individual to figure out for themselves if it fits their need. And lets not forget about the personal taste factor... thats worth a lot to some people! Thanks for the comment and checking out the video! Appreciate it!
Easily my favorite microphone in the looks department. The md21 being a close second.
A have to agree, although my second fave has to be the Shure 55 series. Thanks for checking it out! Appreciate it!

Still wanna know more about this piano stereo technique! It sounds awesome... I'm gonna steal it!
Sure thing. It isnt something i invented. One mic over the bass crossover strings and the other next to the lid prop pointing to middle C.

Gotta love how the "speech" setting on the mic doesn't sound good on spoken word _at all._
Right?! Lets take all the body out of the voice… perfect for speech!
Lovely preamp hiss.
It's cool. Like you said though....competition is fierce these days...and a lot less costly.
Yeah its a spicy meatball!
I could be wrong, but I think this is the mic Ray Thomas used on stage for flute and vocals.
Youre not wrong at all. This is definitely the mic Ray used:

Funny how theres a noticable pitch difference on percussions
What is a good interfaz for this microphone? Gain range?
Pretty much anything. This isn't like an sm7b or RE20 that has very low output.

@meistudiony yeah I meant to say that if you have a nice pre like the 1073 it gives you the option of hi passing in 3 different increments too.
Can this microphone be used as an overhead on drums?
Dont see why not. Expensive pair but would probably sound great.
