  • During these trying and uncertain times, we hope to be able to spread a little bit of love and movie magic by showcasing some of our favourite moments in film.
    Next up is Martin Grindlay, Finance and Operations Manager, with this beautifully stirring clip from the 1996 bittersweet drama Brassed Off.
    In North Yorkshire, a local colliery band led by Danny (Pete Postlethwaite), prepare for the National Brass Band championships, at a time when the pit's miners face redundancy. When the daughter of a former band leader named Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald) arrives, her return to the band raises their spirits, alongside a blossoming relationship with one of the band’s younger members (Ewan McGregor).
    With Gloria leading on the flugelhorn, this pivotal scene showcases the band performing Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. Combining the yearning, pining quality of brass band music with the film’s dry humour, politics and human stories, Brassed Off reminds us that it's the music that matters.
    Please note Cinemoments may not be available in all territories.

    There's acting...then there's been so in tune (no pun intended) with the story you're trying to tell. Regardless of film taste, musical taste, whatever taste, this is one of the most perfectly filmed scenes out there

    • @graham1735
      @graham1735 2 месяца назад +2

      It’s not about the pit, or the coal - whilst these are real things and events, it’s more about community and people pulling together despite adversity. It’s hard to glamourise an industry that at the heart of it wrecked lives and put profit before people. I speak as one from a family of miners who led short, hard lives and died young often as a consequence of the work. Indeed it would have been much better if the mines had been phased out centuries before, but the options weren’t there then

    • @eamonanderson1304
      @eamonanderson1304 2 месяца назад

      @@graham1735 Wait, a company tried to make a profit? Pray tell, how else would any company operate? Indeed, isn't that the real reason the mines were closed, they weren't profitable?

    Yes this is one of my emotional relax time listening.
    Although such a political music compilation depending what side you lean too.
    Absolutely a great movie and the music is superb but it divides the listeners and starts so many arguments and escalates to hatred.
    This video and music has so much meaning to the Brits that were involved.
    The family's, the wages and jobs within the mining industry wiped out.
    Things had to change but it changed into a war that i could understand as no viable employment alternative in the areas.
    It was done so quick but maybe not as we will never know the true facts....i guess i will be bombarded with yes we did.
    Unfortunately it had to happen but maybe it wouldn't with correct management but me to say.
    After all said the music should inspire you to like and enjoy .
    All i know is this is a great interpretation of music and feelings that gives us joy listening. .

    I remember reading all about the trouble of closing the coal mines in England, reading about it in the Daily telegraph in Australia. Putting miners out of work because it was cheaper to import coal from China.
    Can you please tell an illinformed man about people who were effected by pit closures how has their lives moved forward.

      Speaking for myself, as an ex-miner, made redundant Christmas 1990, it was a bit of a roller coaster ride. Took me about four years to find a full time job, did have part time jobs as a warehouse worker, taxi driver, data inputter. Eventually got in to working in social housing as a support worker, my last job was in a mental health rehab unit, which lasted me up to retirement seven years ago. That was a job I loved, worthwhile and good people to work with. Closing the pit was, for me, probably a good thing in the end, certainly health wise, if I'd worked in the pit up to retirement it would probably have left more of a mark.
