    As a Swiss the Wilhelm Tell Overture is of course one of my favorites. During my active time as musician I have been playing the cornet (thereof 1 1/2 years in a British Brass Band in Sussex), euphonium and during the last years Eflat tuba. Apart from that I have watched this great film many years ago and still love it today. Especially Pete Postlethwaite did a brillant job, RIP

    As a euphonium player this movie really hit close to home on the references made to everyone calling it a trumpet and the annoyance portrayed in response. Although I’m used to being called a baby tuba which is even more insulting! This movie really hits close to home as an American. Especially as a euphonium player. The only place we are taken seriously is the brass band. This was a damn good movie!

      As for the 'brave British people speaking out against their government', it was a minority of extremely violent left-wing thugs (violence including murder) attempting to overthrow a democratically government that had the full support of the the majority of the nation at the time.

    A superb performance by Grimethorpe - if Carling made colliery bands...The cornet solo was masterful. A couple of years ago a stage version of 'Brassed Off' went on tour and here in Cheltenham the band was Bristol's Flowers Band. Their performance reflected their status as British Champions. Andy Smith on cornet. As good as this clip from the film.

  • @JamsBrosOfficial
    @JamsBrosOfficial 9 лет назад +41

    This is superb! Probably the best recording out there! After hearing this, the cornet solo at 1:12 became my favorite part. In every other recording, the solo was extremely underwhelming. Here, it's brought out and played so clearly. I also am very much amused by Harry's conducting style. He was by all means taught well :) All the compliments aside, one thing that bugged me was Tara Fitzgerald's acting when she played the flugelhorn. It reminds me of one of Danny's quotes earlier in the movie:
    "That girl blows flugel like a dream." (Referring to Gloria, played by Fitzgerald)
    Well, if you dream about a girl who can't play flugel, then you're definitely right.

    That said as a former member of Thoresby Colliery Junior brass band (cornet) I like the film -brings back memories of playing at garden fetes and pubs at Christmas. Life moves on and so does the world -who wants to work down a hole all day anyway -so much rubbish written about its all maggies fault - some people should show some self respect but I doubt the detractors on here are miners (who by and large did have self respect)
