The Righteous Brothers came about their name when they were singing at a club and a group of black marines were in the club. They were so impressed with the singing that they said, " That was righteous, brother", so Bobby and Bill decided to take the name Righteous Brothers as their new name. They had a nickname of "blue eyed soul".

What you're hearing in the background is the genius of Phil Spectre and his wall of sound technique. He would record single instruments playing the same melody and overlay the individual tracks on one another to build the richness of the sound. He was a genius who unfortunately was also crazy as a loon. He did horrible things to his wife Ronnie Spectre (the Ronettes).

Bill and Bobby started singing together in 1962. They were both lead singers and often did solos … this was Bobby’s most famous one. Bobby was a first tenor with counter tenor ability (which he showed here) and Bill was a Bass baritone, which is at the lowest end of the scale - despite their vastly different ranges they could blend their voices perfectly and in the mid sixties dominated the charts with 22 songs on the Billboard ‘hot 100’. At one point they had three albums in the top 20 simultaneously. They broke up for about 5 years in 1968 but got back together and continued their successful singing career until Bobby’s death in 2003. Bill continued to sing solo until 2016 when he revived the Righteous Brothers with Bucky Heard … and is still performing at the age of 81.

Bobby died at age 63 in 2003 on tour with Bill....in Kalamazoo MI, only a hour or less away from my house. almost bought tickets to that show, but did not. Bill is still alive. The song was from a lesser known movie called Unchained from 1955. It was simply song by a prison inmate on guitar in the movie. Many recorded this song before Bobby, later ELvis did a version. But no one can top this version...no one. Both guys would do a solo song as well a sing together.

This is actually a cover of a 10-year old song from a prison movie called _Unchained,_ hence the name of the song. You could hear the song's longing; it was that of a man who had been separated from his love for far too long. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it played at drive-in theaters. Even if the Righteous Brothers didn't originate it, Bobby Hatfield here took permanent ownership of the song. What's really amazing is that this live performance on the _Andy Williams Show_ (weekly variety program) excels the studio version played on the radio. I'm glad you gave a shout-out to Andy Willams Orchestra. They probably had less than a week to practice this song, and, just as much as Bobby, they nailed it.

  • @CamillusFly
    @CamillusFly Год назад +29

The Righteous Brothers version of _Unchained Melody_ was basically "filler" or "throwaway" music that was released on the b-side of their record single _Hung On You._ DJ's, who weren't interested in _Hung On You,_ started playing the b-side, _Unchained Melody,_ in stead. The song made it to number 4 on Billboard.
Bobby's high note line _"I need your love"_ at 6:43 on your video here (the one that catches a lot of people off guard), is a change that he made to the song that most other performers who have done covers of the song since then have stuck with.

Yeah, that was one-time Spector's idea of a throw away song totally bit him. Word is he was not a happy camper (tried to get DJs to stop playing it), especially since he didn't produce it, and he had some kind of antipathy toward Bobby. Of course, he took credit when it became a hit.

Two of their other most famous songs are:1) "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" and (2) "Soul and Inspiration" (listen to them in order). Once in a lifetime you come across a voice like Bobby Hatfield's. He is a counter tenor with a range of many octives.
This group of Bobby and Bill did several songs together. Both had great voices, Bill's being in the base to baritone level. They complimented each other and created a terrific sound. Sadly they parted ways to pursue solo careers but eventually came back together again to tour. I'm not sure if they recorded any new music together. They were touring when Bobby passed away.
Bill Medley now you're with Bucky Here as the Righteous Brothers, singing all of the hits .
You've got react to "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", "Soul and Inspiration", "You'll Never Walk Alone", Rock and Roll Heaven"
This song, Unchained Melody, was very popular back when Bobby recorded it. (The recording is a little different from this live version) It Got a second life when it was played i n the movie Ghost in the '90's, where it hit the charts again. It is the most covered song of all time.....over 650 covers.
Elvis covered it and you can see his live performance of it from his final concert, a few weeks before he passed on. Elvis did a great job.
It came from a prison movie made in the 50's and was recorded by 3 other men before Bobby did his rendition. Al Hibbler's version (before No by's) had been the most popular.
You must listen to Bill and Bobby together to understand why their sound was called "Blue Eyes Soul.

The simplistic breakdown of voice designations is, alto is a low woman's voice, soprano is a high woman's voice, bass is the lowest male voice, baritone is the middle range man's voice, and tenor is the high man's voice. (When boys are young, before their voices change they would be designated as boy sopranos or altos.) Those are the simplest and most common, but you have others like a contralto which is a very low woman's voice or a counter tenor which is a very high male voice. Counter tenors are very rare and often sound like women. I am not an expert, but it is generally said that Bobby Hatfield was a counter tenor. He is singing extremely high. It probably does not sound that high to you because he is not using any tricks or being showy...except by how incredibly easy he makes it seem, when what he is doing is in no way easy and requires a huge amount of vocal skill. The Bee Gees were amazing singers/songwrters/producers that had skills that the Rightous Brothers did not have, but Bobby Hatfield had vocal skills that the Bee Gees could not match.

Bobby’s voice is smooth as butter and soooo sweet! Bobby did this as a solo. Bobby died in 2003. Bobby was considered a tenor , he just was so talented and had extraordinary range. The Righteous Brothers came out when I was a sophomore in high school. The were referred to as blue eyed soul. Violins in the background. Still listen to them to this day and I’m 76 y/o. If I’m not mistaken, this was recorded around the time when we were in Viet Nam. Two of my brothers were there. One was on the ground in Viet Nam and my other brother was on an aircraft carrier just off the coast in that area as well.

Yes! Those are the String Section (Violins Chellos, Harps, and Piano) of the NBC Orchestra from the Andy Williams Show. This Orchestral arrangement by Phil Spector was off the charts beautiful. Never has an orchestra played this classic song better as when it was done 58 years ago back in 1965 (Live) on the Andy Williams Show. This version of "Unchained Melody" was the greatest arrangement ever created. Together with the incomparable voice of Counter Tenor Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. It helped create what many have considered as the greatest (Live) Television performance in history. Music Composer Alex North and Lyricist Hy Zaret finally heard their creation "Unchained Melody" written back in (1955) 68 years ago for the prison movie "Unchained." Played the way it should be...Brilliantly.

I believe the instrument is a violin in the background with acoustic guitar, many have done this song but Bobby owns it... Nobody has done it better. Many who have never heard of the Righteous Brothers ask where the other brothers are. There is only 1 other Bill Medley and when they recorded this album both were allowed to do a solo and Bobby chose this song. Bill Medley is the bass of the two of them who are not related at all. Both have amazing unique voices.

The song that you just heard young man was written in 1955 by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret for a prison movie called "Chained". The original singer was by The First Black Opera Singer Todd Duncan. As time went on, about 1960 there was a TV show called "The Andy Williams Show" where you just finished hearing Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers sing. This song "Unchained Melody" was performed by about six hundred and something artists and was the Most Played Song in the Twenth Century in all of America and throughout the UK. Many artist including Linda Ronstadt and also Elvis Presley sang this song as well. In 1990 there was a movie that came out called "Ghost" starring Patrick Swaytz and Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. For this movie they wanted this song "Unchained Melody" to be played and by the best singer which to this day was Bobby Hatfield of The Righteous Brothers. And guess what? The movie was a pretty good one too. If you don't believe me brother, just check it out yourself. You will be glad that you did. You kept saying that Bobby singing it sounded like it had a little bit of soul. Well good because guess what? Soul ain't got no color. It all comes from within. If you didn't know that Bobby Hatfield was a white guy and you would have had your eyes closed, you would swear that it was a white guy singing it and when you opened up you eyes you surely freak out because he was White. I always use to hear that the best singers were black but that's a lot of bs. When I was working I use to have two black friends. Neither one could sing worth a damn. One would sound like an old bullfrog and the other one wouldn't even try to sing because he knew that he sounded like crap which he did but boy, that man could whistle extra, extra beautiful. If you didn't know that he was whistling you would swear on a stack of Bibles that it was a bird. Not a human being but it was. Another words don't judge a book by it's cover. Stereotyping of any kind and anyone sucks. You could be wrong. That's why The type of music that The Righteous Brothers have been labeled to is "Blue Eyed Soul". I hope that you enjoyed it cause I sure did. Thank you Amigo. Have a Blessed Day. Adios

Don't think there was an actual coin flip. I think Bill got tired of being asked why it was Bobby's solo. The earliest comments I've seen Bill says it was Bobby's song. He suggested it for his solo on an album. Bobby had been singing it for years, even before he met Bill. At some point, over the years, it became "I think we flipped a coin." Bad memory or frustration with the question?? Bill, however, played piano and produced the studio recording despite Spector claiming credit when it became a hit.

Check them out on the Ed Sullivan Show, "You'll never walk alone"; The Andy Williams Show (Unchained Melody) They were on the "Shindig" TV show. Check out "Mix -Righteous Brothers Shindig appearances" They were together until early 70's, split for a while, Bill going solo and Bobby solo and singing with another guy. They got back together a few years later and performed until Bobby sadly passed away in Nov.2003, A few months before his passing, they were inducted into the R and R Hall of fame. Bill is still performing with Bucky Heard as the "Righteous Brothers" but no one, in my opinion, will ever top the wonderful and amazing Bobby Hatfield. Together Bob and Bill were magic. *** They always sang LIVE. ***They were the opening act for the Beatles on their first tour of America until the boys signed on to the Shindig TV show. Sally

Just to add some; On Andy's show, Bill joked about why he didn't sing it & folks now seem to think he was serious. Both Bill & Bobby have explained how it actually came about. They’d agreed to do 1 solo each, per album. Unchained was to be a solo & both wanted it. They tossed a coin & Bobby won. While nobody expected the 70th recorded version to be such a huge hit, they both thought it was really good & managed to convince Phil Spector to release it as a single (he reluctantly made it the B side). Bill played piano on the recording & produced it. The single was 1st released without "producer" credit, but when it hit, Spector had subsequent labels printed claiming producer credit. Bill said, he heard Spector was so ticked that DJ's were playing it (instead of the A side, which Spector did produce), that he called radio stations, to pressure them into playing "his" side.
