      A "honied" voice, with lyrics delivered so effortlessly in all of the song's many octaves. A tale of wondering, of worry, of insecurity, of hope, of love. The studio orchestra lends a very helpful boost to the performance.

    IMHO this performance is way better than the single release from the studio. Bobby Hatfield sang tenor/countertenor so that high part is not falsetto as many believe. That's actually in his normal range. 3 minutes of perfection! I love that he went high at the end. Nailed it! RIP Bobby.

    This song has been sung by so many singers but none do it better than Bobby Hatfield. No auto tune or gimmicks just pure talent. The studio version was used in the film 'Ghost' and was great but this live version is stupendous. He had a cold, his mother was watching him perform live for the first time and he suffered with stage fright. Notice that when he hits the high note right at the end he does not contort his face like most singers do but just bites his lip and smiles as if to say 'I nailed it'.

    Dont you just love the emotion_ expressiveness, an jus plain talent, no auto tune, nothing but a tiny mic, great orchestra, and Bobby's amazing Tenor voice. Bobby a rare Counter-Tenor with an unbelievable range, could send anything. No falsetto here! Bill, as talented in his own right, with that great Baritone voice. Together, the were magic. Duo or solo, the very best of the best. Bobby is passed away in 2003. Bill is still singing at the age of 82. But we still have the legacy of beautiful music for future generations to discover.

    You'll read several comments that his mother was in the audience and he was a bit nervous. You didn't see it on the video that he watched but when he got done he had this little smile of relief. Jason, where did you get that stupid idea?? Bobby did NOT kill himself! Its true that he did not look after his health. He lived junk food. He smoked a lot. So, in that sense, I suppose you could say that he killed himself. But the night he died, he had flon to the venue, Bill said that Bobby wasn't feeling well, he looked bad, and went to his room to have dinner and rest before the show. He was found lying on the bed with the TV remote in his hand. No drugs in the room. The press went away disappointed because there was no scandal to write about. Then a " second " autopsy conveniently found a small amount of cocaine. Questionable. Bill worked with Bobby for over 40 years. He said that if he had seen any evidence of drugs, he would have intervened. You dont work with someone for 40 years and not know. Bobby always gave his all to every performance. Just watching him was such a joy, because he was so joyful and happy. I think maybe he was tired, and just laid it all down. A great Tenor, husband , father. A very good man. We all miss Bobby Hatfield. But he left his great music to us, for future generations.

    The incredible Bobby Hatfield. He had a once in a lifetime voice: a counter terror with a 5 octave range. Notice how Bobby doesn't have to make an effort to hit those notes. Pure notes, not falsetto. A live, unedited, flawless performance.
    Not only was he nervous because his mom was in the audience, but he had a cold and this was live on tv playing to an audience of over 1 mil. ppl.
    *You should play this video from the beginning where Andy Williams introduces them until the end when all 3 sing together.
    You are correct that this song was played during the "pottery making" scene in the movie "Ghost". ( it was Bobby's original recorded version, which is different from this one)
    *Bobby Hatfield: * "Summertime"
    *Bill Medley: * "I Just Want to Make Love to You"
    Andy Williams had a beautiful voice as well. He was a ballad singer. His tv show was on for many years and very popular.
    * "Moon River"
    * "Love is a Many Splended Thing"
    * "The Impossible Dream"
    * "The Shadow of Your Smile"
    Great reaction.

    The incomparable Counter Tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. This epic performance was done 58 years ago in (1965) on the Andy Williams Television Show (Live). No one has sung this song better than Bobby Hatfield nor any Orchestra has played this song better than the NBC Studio Orchestra of the Andy Williams Show.
    Composed as the music score for the (1955) Prision Movie "Unchained" by music composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret.
    Close to a thousand artist and orchestras has recorded this song. Making it one of the most recorded songs in music history. This (Live) performance has become the quintessential version of "Unchained Melody" of them all. It is why since (1965) Orchestras and singing artist have used this version ever since. This performance has become the greatest (live) performance in television history. Great reaction "Brit Pops" to Bobby Hatfield and the NBC Studio Orchestra whose performance of "Unchained Melody" will go down in history as one of the greatest performances ever.

    Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. In 2003, Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.
    *The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side.
    * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
    * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."

    Bobby is a soprano with an extraordinary range of voice and doesn’t sing falsetto, he is a rare countertenor. Never took lessons, pure raw spotless singer , you noticed the use of his jaws and vowels to enhance the power of his delivery. He wasn’t allowed to modify the song in studio and here he could and improved not only the lyric but the amaizing ending ! 20 years later he rerecorded for the film Ghost ❤ was certified Platinum by the RIAA on January 10, 1991, and received a Grammy Award nomination. The most powerful and emotional rendition of a love song , considered the definitive version of the song until now. You were really impressed and I would love to keep seeing you reacting to those Blue Eyed Souls, Bill’s I wanna make love to you and Bobby’s Summertime are an absolute must.

    According to Wikipedia, there were two recorded live versions of “Unchained Melody” by Elvis Presley. One was an overdubbed album cut on Presley’s 1977 album, “Moody Blue”, which was released a month before his death in August, 1977. The live performance took place at a concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the Spring of that year.
    The other was a live recording from one of Elvis Presley’s two concerts in Rapid City, South Dakota, in the middle of what would be his final US tour, and was released as a single in the U.S..

    Fact: On the 1964 Beatles famous USA tour in August/September , The Righteous Brothers were on of the opening acts for a few weeks, before they became a national sensation. They had a local teen show in California. But a recording contract was offered to them during the tour and they left, thank God, to record their first album and tour on their own, their first big hit You've Lost That Loving Feeling was then released in December that year and went to #1 in January 1965. The rest is history. "Blue eyed Soul" was born. If you two, especially, ask "Who are the Beatles?" I give up hahhahahah

    Bobby Hatfield’s performance of this song on the old Andy Williams TV Show is absolutely the gold standard for this, the most recorded song of the 20th Century!
    There is a video of Elvis performing it on what may have been his last recorded concert…only weeks before his death. It is almost painful to watch, but it does prove one thing…the poor man could barely walk or talk, but his singing ability NEVER failed him…even at the very end!

    Many fine singers have covered this song, but only Bobby's version brings out the "chills" throughout it's entirety. The greatest version hands down. If someone dared to enter Bobby's league on this song, I can only think of the words over the "Devil's Island" doorway which says,..."Abandon all hope, he who enters here!!" R.I.P. Bobby.

    Bobby's cover of this most magnificent song is my favorite. You mentioned that the song was written and recorded for the sountrack of the film "Unchained", but later went on to say that Bobby's '65 version was the originlal, which it is not. Just fyi, In 1955 , Al Hibbler ( great singer in his time who was blind, and Roy Hamilton, also an excellent singer, both had hits with it. Bobby was influenced by Roy's version a wee bit by his more soulful delivery of it. . Elvis probably listened to Al Hibbler's more, which was evident in the way he enunciated and phrased the word "God" like Al did in his version. Interestingly enough Bobby's version as popular as it was in '65, became iconic as a result of it's presence in the film "Ghost".

    They were each solo acts before teaming up. They were not brothers at all. They teamed up but couldn't decide what to call themselves. After a concert in I believe Georgia a guy inthe audience stood up and said, that was righteous brother. I liked it as a name and the rest is history. So to speak

    Top 4 versions of this for me:

    3. Home Free

    I you did the version where they intro it first, you'd know Bill wasn't needed. Bobby was getting over a head-cold, mum was there, they hated the pink suits, but telly needed a good colour. It's ten years after the original, but seen as the best performance, a classic.

    No one will ever do this song like Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Bros his performance was effortless and sheer perfection. I'm an Elvis fan and he couldn't do this better. Bobby Hatfield owns this song and always will. I'VE seen them in person they are great together but also did solos this was one of Bobby's. Listen to Bill singing BROWN EYED WOMAN or Georgia.
