This song was the most requested on radio of the 20th Century. This video was from 1964. Bill Medley is the baritone and Bobby Hatfield is the tenor. They were 24 at this time. I was lucky enough to grow up with their music.
The only problem with this is that it's had the studio version dubbed over it. If you search the original from Shindig! You can hear the real live version...
For more of Bobby's beautiful countertenor voice you should check out his solo of Unchained Melody live in 1965. As you said, the studio version was in Ghost. Bobby changes things up a bit for this amazing live performance on the Andy Williams Show.
You also would be amazed by Bobby's " Summertime" and Bills "Brown Eyed Woman." "Unchained Melody" live in 1965 on the Andy Williams Show, amazing performance by Bobby. They were Inducted into the RnR Hall of Fame in 2003, Bobby passed away 8 months later. He is still missed today. Bill is still performing with Bucky Heard. But no one could ever take Bobby's place. And I dont think Bucky's trying to. Bobby left us a legacy of beautiful music for future generations to discover. A great man, husband, and father.❤❤❤
@terrylg9225 thank you for sharing this link. It’s the one with the introduction to this performance that included Bill Medley and Andy Williams and explained how Bobby ended up doing the song as a solo. 😊
This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Other great songs by them is "Unchained Melody", "Soul & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.
You must play "Unchained Melody" (The Video With Bobby Hatfield Wearing Pink Sports Coat). It was common for them to switch being lead singer. Unchained Melody is maybe the greatest performance ever
Back in 1962 Bobby and Bill were part of a 5 member group. They decided to go out on their own and left the group. They hadn't come up with a name yet for the two of them. While performing at the Paramours a fan shouted, “That was righteous, brothers!” That's when they decided to go with the name Righteous Brothers. And no Boll (baritone) wasn't the only guy. Check out "Unchained Melody" by them.
Bill and Bob were partners and friends for over 40 years. Bill continued on his own for awhile, also singing with his daughter, but wanted to do RB songs and found a new partner a few years ago. They tour and do Las Vegas still. Love Bobby's voice, he can sing anything.
The most-played song on American radio and television of the 20th century (BMI). About the name, from Bill Medley himself in his 2014 memoir - "they then adopted the name The Righteous Brothers for the duo because black Marines from the El Toro Marine Base started calling them "righteous brothers". At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!", and would greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?" on meeting them." Each did some solo songs throughout their pairing, and for albums would usually each have one; Bobby chose "Unchained Melody" and Bill once jokingly remarked that one of his biggest mistakes was not choosing it first. You might react to it for a good idea of Bobby's vocal tools!
Maybe you want to listen to unchained melody. It is an unbelievable performance by Bobby Hatfield. He is the blond one In the Rightious btothers. He gives the best live performance I have ever heard.
Righteous Brothers elected to R and R Hall of Fame in 2004 ....this song was the most played song of the 20 th century . When you get a look at the back-up singers toward the end of the song ......a very young Cher was one of those singers .
Hi, guys! First of all, because of their very soulful tones we suspected they were black. Their sound was so unique and they quickly rose to the top of the charts. Anything they sang rose to the top of the charts. In fact, something extraordinary happened in the 60's. Johnny Mathis came out with a Greatest Hits album and it featured 12 songs of his gigantic hits. It was a tremendous best seller! Not to be outdone, The Righteous Bros came out with a Greatest Hits album, also featuring 12 of their greatest songs and it, too, was incredibly popular. To me, those two greatest hits albums packaged the greatest music you could ever imagine being on one record.
@@ronjones1077 Ron, did you hit a tender spot. Misty was so great it wasn't on that album. I think they left it out because it didn't deserve to be mixed in with other music! I have no clue but that was the way I felt. Johnny was magnificent and the song could not have been sung any better by anyone. "On my own, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree......." Needless to say, I had a broken romance at the time and that song said it all, didn't it?
The song is so good Clint Eastwood did a movie with that title about the song. Nancy Reagan “worked” with Johnny singing and this was also a personal favorite of hers. The way he fades in is iconic in the Look at me verse. Andy W does that on Maria and also Danny Boy. Perfection from both….
In the late 80's Eric Clapton was asked by Journalist what it is like to be the Best Guitarist, he replied you are asking the wrong person ask PRINCE who you have never played
As others have commented here, you should really react to Unchained Melody next. That song was done solo by Bobby Hatfield (the guy who has a smaller role in this one). Bill didn't think that Unchained Melody would be a hit at all, so he let Bobby sing it by himself. The live version with him wearing the pink sports jacket is the best! 🙂
An old song that never gets old. Part of the "Blue Eyed Soul" genre that came out when I was 10 years old. I never appreciated the talent at that age as the Beatles grabbed the spotlight. But I surely do appreciate it now. Great reaction once again.
Their cover of "You'll Never Walk Alone" on "The Ed Sullivan Show" is *incredible* and on YT. (Bobby's "Unchained Melody" performed live in '65 -- also on YT -- is one of the greatest live performances.)
Bill Medley has the baritone voice and Bobby Hatfield has a counter tenor voice. This is from 1964. Phil Spector produced it and he used the reverberation sound in many songs. * (Cher is one of the back up singers) Check out from 1965 ( live video on the Andy Williams Show) The Righteous Bros. featuring Bobby Hatfield ( he sings 5 octaves) singing "Unchained Melody". The recorded version of the song is heard in the movie Ghost. But Bobby goes all out here and shows us his full range. Watch from the beginning til the end of the video to hear how they got their name and you'll hear Andy Williams sing along with Bill and Bobby. The song, "Unchained Melody" is the most covered song ever with over 670 covers. Actually the song comes from a 1950's prison movie called Unchained. Bobby was the 3rd person to cover this song and his version is by far the best. Bobby owns this song. Bill has teamed up with Bucky to keep bringing the Righteous Bros. songs to the fans. No one can replace Bobby. RIP Bobby Hatfield Other R.Bros. songs are: Soul and Inspiration, ( video)You'll Never Walk Alone,( video Ed Sullivan Show) Rock and Roll Heaven, ( video) Summertime ( solo by Bobby) I Just Want To Make Love To You ( solo by Bill)
You need to listen to Bobby Hatfield do Summertime and Bill Medley do I Just Want To Make Love To You. They’re great solo or together!❤ They also do a great rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.❤
They were commonly referred to as Blue Eyed Soul. If I remember correctly Bobby left the duo and was replaced. He returned and at some after that he passed away. There's a live version of them doing Unchained Melody that is really good as well. I adore Elvis's voice doing this song but I have to say this is my favorite version.
The Righteous Brothers were Bobby and Bill until Bobby's death in 2003. They did split up a couple of times and went solo, although for about a year Bobby did team up with another singer. Bucky Heard did not start singing with Bill until 2016 - until then Bill sang solo.
Suggest you read their interview for LEGENDS. Also, dig a little deeper and read about the millions Bobby's annual Classic Golf Tournament made for R & D for Lupus because his wife Linda from it.
I saw the Righteous Brothers in 1999 at a Mississippi casino. They sounded as great then as they did in this video. They had an incredible show and the capacity crowd was wild for them. I also won 5,000 dollars that trip which sweetened the experience.😁😁😁 Great as always guys. I do believe you are helping keep the dementia at bay reminding me about these great memories.👏👏✌🤗
Two things: I think that fade-up from their silhouettes was because many people had never seen them (only heard their record on the radio) and thus were surprised when the spotlights came on and revealed one, then two, white soul singers instead of the black singers they had imagined! Second, in 1999 the performing-rights organization Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) ranked the song as the most-played song on American radio and television in the 20th century, having accumulated more than 8 million airplays by 1999, and nearly 15 million by 2011. Bangin' Indeed!!! ⚒
This is from the very popular weekly music show called Shindig. The guys were regulars on the show. They were a very popular act on the show. By the time of this performance (Jan. 13, 1965), they had been seen by millions weekly for months. This video has the live audio replaced by the studio recording. The real live audio, including the screaming teenage girls, is available on RUclips. They, the girls, would go nuts every time they appeared.
This song was written for the Righteous Brothers. I was 14 when this song hit the charts. The Righteous Brothers were a such a fan favorite among the teens back then. Some of us girls swooned over Bobby Hatfield while others preferred Bill Medley. Many walls were covered with posters of these two very talented young men. If you liked this song check out the solos by Bobby, "Unchained Melody" and "Summertime." I watched Bobby sing "Unchained Melody" LIVE on the Andy Williams Show when it aired in 65.' What a performance!!!! None can match this live version.
Bobby Hatfield got to do Unchained Melody by himself, so Bill got the lead on this, that just how they worked it. No one really replaced anyone, they stopped being a duo in the late 70s, now that Bill is in his latter years, he needed someone to do the duos with him, and since Bobby passed on he got the other guy to give the older ladies a concert performance. That is probably his money maker.
No way Bobby could ever be replaced. Bill and his new partner are not the RIGHTEOUS BROS. THough their act relies heavily on former Righteous Bros emotional appear: everyone LOVED Bobby - and still do.
I appeared with Bill and Bucky on a cruise less than a year ago. Bill celebrated his 82nd birthday by thrilling the crowds over and over again. His voice is still amazing.
I listened to Elvis and the Righteous brothers ever since the 60's. Most played song on the radio in 20th century. Bobby Hatfield ( died 2003) was the tenor n Bill Medley the baritone who is still singing at 83,I met Bill several years back n he was good friends with Elvis having dinners together, n going to movies. The songs they loved weren't here Time Of My Life""You've Lost That Loving Feeling " Soul and Inspiration Bill co-wrote several songs. Unchained Melody is a favorite of many pegrple( sung by Bobby solo n at the last notes most women can't hit) Do Unchained Melody n Soul And Inspiration please. No Autotune just pure voice
Banger! Good call changing video. That's the one I remember. IIRC there's a YT compilation of reactions to it. Popular! Bizarrely, I was searching for Police "Every Breath You Take" (I was looking for Sting commenting on the lyrics), and came across _Sting Accepts The Award For "Every Breath You Take" Becoming BMI's Most Performed Song_ (15million by 2019) In that award ceremony, Sting references this as probably the greatest record ever made. Full circle! 🤔 Best Wishes, Chaps. ☮
This song was one of their first songs in 1964. I remember. I was 16 yrs old at the time. I fell in love with their singing. The light-haired brother sings Unchained Melody solo 1965... here is the link LIVE ruclips.net/video/IYj2hex99gY/видео.html Enjoy.
My favorite guys. They were awesome when they came out in 1964. You need to listen to them on the Ed Sullivan show singing you'll never walk along. They had so many hits. Please look for them on their other hits you'll not be disappointed! ❤
Bill Medley (tall one) has told some wonderful stories about Elvis & their friendship when both were headlining in Vegas in the 70's. Stories that tell you just how funny Elvis could be & what a warm person he was. Speaking of The King..please react to him singing this same song, live in Vegas 1970. Would love to see what y'all think! 💙💫💙💫💙💫💙💫💙💫💙 As always, much love from Kentucky U.S.💙🇬🇧🇺🇸💙
I must have watched a hundred reaction channels for this song. Funny how only the female reactors swoon and clutch their heart when he sings “Baby, baby, I’d get down on my knees for you.” As sexy and deep a voice the one guy has; it’s that line that makes a girls heart melt. EVERY TIME.
This song was written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil, and produced by Phil Spector. It's an example of Phil Spector's 'wall of sound'. Phil was a real piece of work in the worst possible way, and few tears were shed for him at his death in 2021; but, he did contribute in a major way to the music in music scene of the 60s. Bobby Hatfield sings solo on "Unchained Melody", beautiful song!
In the early 1960's, when they were just starting out they played the 2am shows in Vegas. Frank Sinatra liked their act. Called the "the kids". Righteous Brothers credit Sinatra for showing them how to become entertainers not just singers.
I was in High school when this came out. They got their name from an audience member one night who shouted out that they sounded "Righteous". Now please react to Bobby Hatfield singing Unchained Melody live on the Andy Williams show about 1967. Also, Angelina sings a cover of his performance at age 9 live on TV with an interview talking about her book before the song.
The lady that co-wrote Lovin Feeling just passed away about a month ago. There is an interview done not long ago with her talking about how this song came together with these guys singing it.
I'm late to the party but Bobby & Bill were amazing ! If you want to listen to their song that really made the ladies swoon even today ! Check out " Soul and Inspiration " even women reactors today are still swooning to this song !
I grew up in Orange County California just like RB , one time I went with a friend to here a new band it was their 1st gig and as I was sitting there I looked at the person next and realised it was Buddy Miles and at the end of the set he stood up and there was Bill Medley next him. I met Jenifer Warns a couple times when she came over to my house for New Years parties
"You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was released when I was a very young girl. I do believe that it is considered one of the top 5 songs released in the '60s. There have been so many covers of this song but, this original version has always been my favorite. This song has stood the test of time. I still hear it played on the radio. Great review, BPR. Great way to start my Sunday. 🙂 🎶
Unchained melody. That showcases "the other guy". This song was my childhood tho i wasnt alive when this came out. But my mom was a huge fan of doo wop, and she played this so many times as it was one of her favorites. Outside of elvis this got the most play on the record player! Vinyl. Those were the days.
You know Ringo wasn't The Beatles first drummer, right? Yeah, he was a replacement. So was Sammy Hagar from Van Halen, replacing David Lee Roth, etc. 🙂
@FourFish47 Thanks for the fun info and yes, we know they had quite a few drummers, including Pete Best, Andy White and even Jimmy Nichol, whio stood in for Ring, when he was ill. As you mentioned Van Halen, we have a video from them coming soon. It is our first ever Van Halen video too
Bobby sang with Ringo and George later in 71 in Apple London studios. You can listen in The Richard Perry Sessions , the most staggering cover of Bobby’s Stay with me. It gives you chills from the beginning
BP1 don't feel too sorry for "that other guy" (Bobby Hatfield). "That other guy" just rips it up in Unchained Melody. The guy featured in this video is Bill Medley who is still performing. Bobby passed away at a young age.
You mentioned GREASE, a musical first performed in 1971. You mentioned this while watching a 1964 performance by The Righteous Brothers. Yo mentioned that Elvis recorded this. He did, in 1970. Here is the opening sentence on the Wikipedia about this song ""You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" is a song by Phil Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, first recorded in 1964 by the American vocal duo the Righteous Brothers. " If this duo never recorded it, there is a good chance none of us would ever have heard this song. Enjoy your reactions, cheers, John
BPR. The only channel to give you an impromptu Grease karaoke session in the middle of a reaction. Classic indeed 😊 At the risk of being repetitive... you'd never seen them??? 😮 Definitely take a look at the iconic video of 'Unchained Melody' where I think Bobby is wearing a pink blazer. Very snazzy 😊
If there were to be a lawsuit over music usage between the Righteous Brothers and the composer of "Summer Loving", it would be the Righteous Brothers who could bring the suit, since they released "You've lost that Lovin' Feelin'" in 1964, and the first performance of the musical "Grease" was in February of 1971. The songwriting was done by Phil Spector, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil. The production was by Phil Spector, famous for his "Wall of Sound" production technique.
This was way before Grease. When it broke on the radio it was so soulful everyone thought it was a black group. …Before MTV. First time we saw them it was on aAmerica Bandstand.
It says December 1964 right on the screen at the beginning of the video, guys. HaHaHa That specific video is the visuals from a live performance on a show called Shindig* combined with the studio version of the song. THIS song may be all about Bill (In fact when Phil Spector first brought them the song, Bobby asked, "What am I supposed to do while Medley's singing?" and Spector replied, "Go to the bank."), but others are all about Bobby. They were pretty equal...although since high voices are a bit showier, Bobby might have actually gotten a bit more attention. *You can see it with the original audio included in a compilation of all there Shindig appearances that someone posted on here.
Thanks for the great reaction to the Righteous Brothers. They were a great duo for many years. I really also enjoyed your reaction to Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. You mentioned you would like to do more from that era. I would like to suggest a video with Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong doing Birth of the Blues. It is really great and Armstrong also shows off his musical talent with the trumpet. It is fantastic entertainment from another era. New subscriber and enjoying your reactions. 👏👏🇨🇦

I’m glad you switched to the original video. It’s the best version ❤fun fact a young Cher is one of the background singers.
The only problem with this is that it's had the studio version dubbed over it. If you search the original from Shindig! You can hear the real live version...
1964/65 Righteous Bros playing as i walked the halls of my dorm on at least half the radios. We did have the very best music.

Best duo ever. Both great in there on right, but together they were so righteous. My favorite duo of all time. Could listen to them 24/7, so smooth.

You have to see Unchained Melody version from Andy Williams show in 1964 the entire clip that explains motive for song
More Bobby Hatfield please!😊 Bobby sings solo Unchained Melody. It will melt your heart.
The best song in my lifetime
So glad you switched out the video. These voices are amazing 🇨🇦
Great reaction guys! To hear Bobby sing, listen to the 1965 version of Unchained Melody. It is almost perfect IMO.
Many compare this song to Grease even though Grease did not come out until 1978 when this song came out 13 years earliar.
You have to Listen to Soul and Inspiration. Grew up with the Rightous Brothers. Great Duel. Love your channel
And Rock and Roll Heaven, their last big hit.

Best Wishes, Chaps. ☮
Totally live
Both of them take turns singing leads. Both were amazing.
Another great example of their harmony is You’LL NEVER WALK ALONE , live on the Ed Sullivan tv show 1965!
Im so old 75, that i remember when that 1st came out. It was an amazing hit.
Blue eyed soul.
I read that a young Cher was one of the background singers.
💙💫💙💫💙💫💙💫💙💫💙
As always, much love from Kentucky U.S.💙🇬🇧🇺🇸💙
If you want to hear Bobby Hatfield's vocal gymnastics, listen to 'Summertime'
The lights were very bright back then
I was in High school when this came out.
As for the size of the mic, you have to remember this was the time of miniaturization and micro everything, even skirts and transistor radios etc...
I'm late to the party but Bobby & Bill were amazing ! If you want to listen to their song that really made the ladies swoon even today ! Check out " Soul and Inspiration " even women reactors today are still swooning to this song !
Bobby had an incredible range with his voice, several octaves, no falsetto ❤️😀
You can’t replace Bobby Hatfield!
Such a classic! So glad you changed to this video, much better. I see loads of requests for Unchained Melody and I’ll look forward to that one!
Right! “Lost”, not “Got” that lovin feeling.
Great old song, always sounds good.
@FourFish47
Thanks for the fun info and yes, we know they had quite a few drummers, including Pete Best, Andy White and even Jimmy Nichol, whio stood in for Ring, when he was ill.
As you mentioned Van Halen, we have a video from them coming soon.
It is our first ever Van Halen video too
@BritPopsReact Yay! I hope it's with David Lee Roth because he's entertaining lol Maybe Jump? 🤩
Hot For Teacher? I can't wait!
Thank you! 💖
Bobby sang with Ringo and George later in 71 in Apple London studios. You can listen in The Richard Perry Sessions , the most staggering cover of Bobby’s Stay with me. It gives you chills from the beginning
Hail to the genius production by Phil Spector!
BP1 don't feel too sorry for "that other guy" (Bobby Hatfield). "That other guy" just rips it up in Unchained Melody. The guy featured in this video is Bill Medley who is still performing. Bobby passed away at a young age.
He was 63, not so young.
Produced and arranged by Phil Spector.
Let your block buddy listen to Bobby sing Unchained Melody. I listen to them since 1965. You will see what a voice Bobby has. Thanks 😂
You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling on the Andy Williams Show, Bobby does his solo
You mentioned GREASE, a musical first performed in 1971. You mentioned this while watching a 1964 performance by The Righteous Brothers. Yo mentioned that Elvis recorded this. He did, in 1970. Here is the opening sentence on the Wikipedia about this song ""You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" is a song by Phil Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, first recorded in 1964 by the American vocal duo the Righteous Brothers. "
If this duo never recorded it, there is a good chance none of us would ever have heard this song.
Enjoy your reactions,
cheers,
John
One of the background singers towards the end is a 16 year old Cher.
This song was YEARS ahead of Grease!
it's titled "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling".
Fun Fact CHER BONO. Was one of the background singers..
BPR. The only channel to give you an impromptu Grease karaoke session in the middle of a reaction. Classic indeed 😊
At the risk of being repetitive... you'd never seen them??? 😮
Definitely take a look at the iconic video of 'Unchained Melody' where I think Bobby is wearing a pink blazer. Very snazzy 😊
@tundiel
😊 We know how to mess up a classic
We have had many requests for that one, so we will get on it
All the best
Grease with Travolta? I didn’t know, I think it’s from 1978 , maybe they used the beat. This version from the Righteous Brothers is the original
@@teresadavilasoares6136 I meant BP1 warbling a few lines from a Grease track in the middle of the video. 😉
Please listen to more of them. Unchained Melody will give you a solo of Bobby and his higher tenor. They were before my time but, were full of talent.
So glad you switched clips.. the one you did was so much better IMO.
The production was by Phil Spector, famous for his "Wall of Sound" production technique.
saw them live in houston 20+ years ago..it was great
This was way before Grease. When it broke on the radio it was so soulful everyone thought it was a black group. …Before MTV. First time we saw them it was on aAmerica Bandstand.
Summer Lovin': good call
They sang this at least a decade before the movie Grease came out
@robertfisher3241
Yup, we guessed that, just saying that the song from Grease sounded very much like this one
This was 14 years before Grease and a common riff.
This was way way before grease
No, they didn’t have one or the other as the lead vocals. They just determined who was best to sing certain songs.
I think the "Grease" song you're looking for is "Summer Nights".
Thanks for the great reaction to the Righteous Brothers. They were a great duo for many years. I really also enjoyed your reaction to Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. You mentioned you would like to do more from that era. I would like to suggest a video with
Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong doing Birth of the Blues. It is really great and Armstrong also shows off his musical talent with the trumpet. It is fantastic entertainment from another era. New subscriber and enjoying your reactions. 👏👏🇨🇦
I love their beautiful voices. Perfect together.
It may vaguely resemble the melody from Grease but it's definitely not the same.
It looks like someone is holding the mic and reaching around Bobby Hatfield.
