Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Review | Escape to the Movies

- Quentin Tarantino’s latest, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is filled to the brim with mid-1960s Hollywood nostalgia, hero worship of underappreciated hard-living “almost made it” B-movie tough guys, meticulously curated classic rock and characters who speak movie reference as a second language. None of that is a surprise. The surprise (well, one of them) comes from how much of a difference grounding the story in the real(ish) time and place being referenced makes to the tone and meaning of all that film buff trivia.
This tale of historical fiction is about two conjoined fortunes of a fading TV cowboy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his loyal stuntman (Brad Pitt) and how they orbit (but doesn’t precisely “center”) Margot Robbie’s Sharon Tate in the weeks and months prior to the infamous real-life “Manson family murders.” Tarantino has found an ideal channel to focus his fixations, fantasies, and fetishes… and delivers his most authentically human feature to date.

This is the closest Tarantino’s ever come to being “cute” with his work, and it was refreshing. It’s a super laid-back snapshot of the last days of classic Hollywood, and a love letter to filmmaking.
Yeah, you'd almost forget it was a Tarantino film if not for all the foot shots and the climax.
Meme Iselfaneye
Hah, yeah! XD
I like to think of this, Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained as a thematic trilogy. I call it the "Historical Revenge" trilogy.
Graham Kristensen didn’t think of it like that ! Good stuff bro
A while ago somebody, might've been Moviebob, pointed out that Tarantino's last three movies were revenge fantasies for groups he was not a part of. (Death Proof- women, Inglorious Basterds- Jews, Django Unchained- African Americans) I guess it was only a matter of time before he made one for himself.

Very good point. It seems very clear to me that Tarantino sees Tate and her friends as the kinda people he wished he coulda hung out with back when he was a kid.
EXACTLY.
Can we get a video discussing the third act in The Big Picture. I think this is something that really warrants a larger discussion.
I was a 12 year old kid in the summer of 69 and the Manson family scared the heck out of me for years. I appreciate QT's exorcism of these demons from my psyche
Patrick Frost I love the idea, but I wish Tarantino had gone all the way and given us more catharsis.
So Bob when does your Miami Vice reboot air?
okay, that's all I need to know, I'll be back to watch this after I see it
What did you think of it?
I gotta say: I laughed at the flamethrower. In a good way.
Hey, if this movie shows how utterly despicable the Manson family were without the making them larger than life and makes Sharon Tate a person instead of just thier trophy victim, I'm good with it.
Edit: okay, did some research. I take it all back.
@@lolailo2199 I don't understand the joke.
Katherine Alvarez I think a lot of female critics like Clarke Wolf and Angie Han didn’t like the way they didn’t give Sharon Tate that much of a character and that sucks
@@Moscato_Moscato really? Huh. I can't say I read those reviews and I haven't seen the movie yet.
I can't seem to find them
yeaaaah this movie doesn't make Sharon Tate any less of a trophy lol
I wonder if ppl have seen Jackie Brown lately. I feel like all the crap that movie gets is exactly why ppl are praising this one.
And I think JACKIE BROWN is QT's best film.
certainly the most refined of the 90's "L.A."
tarantino movies
@@SgtKaneGunlock And honestly to me the 2nd best 90s "Tarantino" flick is actually OUT OF SIGHT (I know Sodey directed it) which still has a connection to JB.
@Jonathan Eilbeck That's AWESOME. How's the novel, worth picking up?!
Good to hear that Quentin Tarantino is still making great movies. Congrats on your weight loss btw
Adrian21 Still making great movies with shots of women holding filthy bare foot soles right in front of the camera in full focus, no less. Get help, Quentin.
Smoky Doggg Why does he need to get help for a harmless kink. So the guys into feet, that doesn’t make him a bad director or person. Don’t kink shame people
@D S Agreed, if there is a reason to shame him it's because of how he knew two women assaulted by Weinstein, who told him directly, and he aided and abetted those crimes because of his ego and career prospects.
The movie was bad unless you love love love pop culture from the 50s and 60s
@@Okami-109 Americana revolts me and 50s and 60s don't mean shit to me, but i enjoyed this movie tremendously.
Kinda sad that Bruce Lee's daughter Shannon felt her father was being disrespected by Mike Moh's portrayal of him. Overall thought it was a bit long, but an enjoyable film nonetheless. Especially the ending fight in the house with the Manson family.
I agree. The portrayal of Bruce Lee was suuuper uncomfortable.
I think it was implied that one scene was from the character’s biased memory. That’s how I choose to see it anyway.
Especially as a Bruce Lee fan.
Tarantino is a master getting better with every film. I was blown away by this movie.
Totally agree with you it was great wasn't it? Man that ending!!!
As soon as I heard Sharon Tate’s name, and remembered both Basterds and Django, I knew how this movie was going to end.
And it was, GLORIOUS! I don’t think I was cheering during a climax that much in a theater ever.
I was literally clutching my skull, shaking my head, and smiling profusely during the entire final act.
Everything I felt but couldn't find the words for. Definitely in my top Tarantino movies. The real humanity in it took me way off guard. Loved it
Great way to open a review. Appreciate your respect on my most anticipated film this year. I'll see it this weekend and finish with this after.
I really like that you do the no spoiler review upfront, thank you.
Great analysis! I agree that this was the most "Tarantino" of his movies and the entire cast was excellent. I really appreciate the "seeing Sharon Tate as a person" comment. It really upped the stakes after the time jump because you could see that she was just a groovy chic. Knowing Tarantino's love of brutality, I was wincing all the way to the finale.
We were talking about this movie today and my brother said something quite appropriate. If you’re still talking about a movie a day and half later, that’s a good thing.
I have seen it twice and I'm absolutely in love with it. Definitely in my top 3 of QTs films.
This movie is definitely going to win some oscars.
It's Quentin. Even if it gets nothing else, it's guaranteed to get a Best Original Screenplay nomination.
Brad Pitt will most likely win Best Supporting Actor
yeah, feels like oscar bait to me.
The Oscars is a farce. Hollywood created the award to pat themselves on the back. One thing that Hollywood loves is movies about themselves.
X Gem Yeah, cause every other business in the world doesn’t have ‘employee of the Month’ or ‘Man of the Year.’ How many banks have lavish parties at fancy hotels in Barbados, blowing each other about how great a year they had (with YOUR money, no less). How many law offices, software design firms, professorial departments, Wall St finance groups or oil executives gather every year to award themselves & give credit to the people who should be recognized for their efforts & achievements. They just aren’t interesting enough to watch in TV is all (neither are the actors, as far as I’m concerned). Probably 75% of all fields have parties of recognition like this. It’s where you get bombed out of your skull & embarrass yourself in front of the boss.
Good review bob I didn’t quite get all the themes so really enjoyed this review.
Having grown up in the very neighborhoods in which much of this film took place was an added treat to an amazing experience. I loved it even though I know I’ve yet to absorb all of the symbology and depth. Without a doubt it deserves repeat viewings. Like every other Tarantino flick, its unconventional and utterly unpredictable. If it’s not his best film it might be his most interesting.
Question: Did you paint a whole wall of your house bright fluorescent green to use as a green screen?
Yes...yes he did....
@@Zelousfear I mean, if it works, it works.
He does this as a career. Why _wouldn't_ he paint a whole wall of his house to act as a permanent green screen? It's like a graphic designer shelling out for a high powered PC, or a professional athlete having a dedicated room for work-out equipment. He's going to get mileage out of it.
@@Bluecho4 I realize that now, but I thought it was just a cloth rollout up until I realized that the light switch was also green. I'm kind of an unobservant idiot most days.
@@djvibekiller Like would be simpler in a lot of ways and a lot more complicated in others if you could.
It was all right. A bit too glacially paced for me even though I've really enjoyed Tarantino's other slow and possibly indulgent movies. There is some fun stuff here. But 30 minutes of it could have gone. "Spahn movie ranch" didn't immediately trigger anything in me and I actually watched that whole sequence not fully appreciating Brad Pitt's situation beyond "something is up with this hippies". But before that, as soon as the movie call attention to who Leonardo DiCaprio's neighbor was, it was pretty easy to guess the ending and I found myself waiting to get there.
you said pretty much all the things i felt about this movie, though i do think that with repeat viewings it may prove to be his best work (at least in my book, which doesn't necessarily mean much)
I feel asleep watching "The lost tapes" on Hulu the night before I saw the movie. Picked up on the Manson reference five minutes, and I still didn't see that ending coming.
Good shit QT.
Also Robie is Brilliant in her most understated role ever.
Congrats on the new jacket!
As a fellow traveler likewise trying to shed some extra baggage, kudos on going down a size!
I felt like everything, EVERYTHING totally built to that ending. Down to the hip.
Eh, I prefer Hateful 8 and Inglorious Basterds.
I really enjoyed all the vintage movies and shows! Like you said, there was a ton of attention to detail.
I haven't seen it but I'm guessing the third act is just straight up Quentin finally addressing Weinstein. I don't know. Can't think of anything that would make this film more human. I guess I have to see it, then. I still got to wait for the Blu Ray because I'm broke so no one spoil me.
But how can he address Weinstein when he adores Polanski?
@Joey Stalone Yeah, and..? None of that has anything to do with what I said.
@Joey Stalone Then you seem to be mistaken about what I meant. When I said Tarantino adores Polanski, I didn't mean he was merely a fan of the man's oeuvre; I meant that he very personally liked the man...to the point of having defended his rape of a 13-year old girl. Mind you, I read that last year he retracted his defense of Polanski (just in time for the prodction and release of his new film *wink*), but then, elsewhere I've also read that he's been in contact with Polanski regarding this film in a capacity that, frankly, exceeds professional curtesy. So yeah, this is about more than just liking someone's work.
Really smart review. I watched it twice.
This sounds like the movie Tarantino has been building to since his career started. Also I'm glad you went down a pound Bob. Looks good
I'll be back, thanks for the heads up
Thanks for keeping it real. I saw it twice last weekend and kept my mouth shut. Why ruin a great movie going experience. Loved it. Emotional and funny. Loved it more second time.
Thanks for the “warning”. Was wondering if I should click. I’m sticking with ya cuz you’re the best, Bob. Thank you.
Highly appreciate the heads up! See you again afterwards.
Best review of this movie so far
BOB!!!!! Congratulations on your weightloss! I'm also a bigger guy and I know what a difference one size makes on everything. Keep it up!
Lookin good Bobby-baby! Great review. You'll always be the Tarantino of, "those who can't do, teach... and those who can't teach, become critics." If there's one, only one, little nitpick it would be: "fer kryssakes I've been here almost 9 minutes, when the hell is my prescription gonna be ready?"
That's love Bobby-baby. Pure love.
It was an above average movie at best. The last third is probably the best part.
I wish you would have went thru with that spoiler review/discussion. I don't like tarentino movies so I'll prob never see this but now I'm curious about that "surprising" third act twist/flip
SPOILERS***
rather than the Manson cult killing Sharon Tate and all her friends they try and kill Rick Dalton. It goes poorly cause Brad Pitts dog kills them instead. QT got his revenge against Manson for ruining the twilight years of old hollywood by making his cult look like a bunch of dumbasses and demystifying them. Then Rick gets to talk to Sharon and presumably get a role in Polanskis next movie.
Bob.... I had guessed the Mansons. Did you just spoil the end? Probably not, must be something else.
Cheers!
That’s some good soft shoe you pulled off, With strong promotion, intersticed! I--like it
Finally getting around to watching this after....
Tarentino masterfully takes back the 60s and defeats the Manson family by offering an alternate ending to that tragic night. It's a tour de triomphe both psychologically and symbolically. IMO, Tarentino's greatest work, it approaches epic proportions like great classic literature. Look for the plethora of references and allusions, the fantastic attention to detail (even the car radios are playing KHJ Los Angeles with the Real Don Steele on Boss radio)... Eye-popping visuals and incredible stellar performances from a star-studded cast. You can see my video review of this film here on the Richard Vernadeau channel on RUclips.
I have yet to see the film but I hope he uses this film to alter history and prevent the murders. That kind of wish fulfillment is my jam.
I totally agree with this review I just watched it great flick! I would honestly put it up there with Pulp Fiction!
Larry Johnson Yeah, I agree. I really dug it.
I'll watch this video later, the movie isn't out yet in the UK...
good review bro
I recently went down a size too, isn't it fun buying new clothes after you lose weight? Way to put the work in!
I freaking adored this movie!
Good job on the weight loss bob keep it up
To me this is the deepest Tarantino film. As far as symbolism and all that goes
I fell in love with Robbie....
Huh, very interesting!
Who sells that goomba shirt?
I can't think of a director whose personality, style and movies I dislike more, but I also have come to accept that I will always be in the minority on that.
One man's self-indulgent claptrap is is another man's loving industry homage
I just watched this movie, and I feel as though I just watched a two hour prologue followed by a twenty minute climax with no actual movie in it.
I love conversation pieshes.
Conversation peashes? LOL
An hour and a half of this 3 hour long movie was watching people drive their cars, open cans of dog food, and other boring stuff like that. The same story could have been told in 90 minutes without losing any details.
But being boring is part of the ATMOSPHERE, maaaaaan! So that when something does finally bother to happen, it wakes you up from the nap you took during the rest of the movie.
Just saw it. Kinda pointless. I saw it because I like most of Tarantino's movies. Nice stroll through 1969 in LA with music, cars etc. though. Ending is weird , although I imagine replaying the Tate murders while in keeping with Tarantino's tendencey towards graphic violence, would be anti-climactic, like puncturing an inner tube with a needle.
Firs time in awhile I’m beating Bob to a RUclips review.
Whatever floats your boat
Absolutely loved it!
Tarantino's attention to detail is staggering, must have spent a fortune producing this movie!
For Bob and nothing but
This movie could have been a 20 minute short. Such a huge drag of nothing happening to end on nonsensical "payoff" that is the revenge porn. I've understood and thought the django writing and story and how the alternate take can take place. Same for inglorious bastards. This honestly sucked and I'm so surprised by the appreciation it's getting.
But then again it's Hollywood worshiping Hollywood and so not totally surprised.
20 minutes? It easily could have shed an hour. RIP Tarantinos editor, her absence is felt heavily in this movie
Pleasue Big Picture this
Conversation Pishes!
Now I can watch.
Why does the character of Charles Manson wave to Brad Pitt putting up an antenna on the roof when this science is not in the movie, the trailer which is out of context depicts Brad never have had eye contact to Manson which leaves the audience to be given an alternate plot point which leaves the audience to think that Manson is trying to recruit the stuntman to join his cult which in this one scene in the trailer never appears in the actual story.
What was your favorite bit of the wakanda battle with hulk in it?
You went down a size, you look different. Who do you look like now? Hmm...
It's good just watch it.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is such a unique film going experience. The meticulous recreation of 1969 Hollywood and the brilliant sweeping shots Tarantino uses to romanticize it is endlessly fascinating. Tarantino finally examines the melancholy side of nostalgia and the result is heartwarming and powerful. It is not a movie for everyone. It’s a slow burn that’s deliberately paced but teases the inevitable shocking ending every step of the way. I loved it. A masterclass of direction. I do think it lacks Tarantino’s signature dialogue though. I needed my Jules/Vincent “Royale with Cheese”, “Foot massage”, “Walk the earth” scenes between Pitt/DiCaprio that showed their bromance on fully display. The movie also needed more DaKota Fanning (who is remarkable in her one scene), Margot Robbie (the heart and soul of the movie), and Margaret Qualley (explosively temptous and creepy at the same time). That woulda made it the perfect movie.
Bob you look good! Congrats on losing some weight!!
dang, catch a breath!!
Lol. You just edit out the breaths.
So out of all the Nazi's, the gangsters, the stalkers and whatever those gun shop owners in pulp fiction were supposed to be, Tarantino hates the killer cult family the most?
Maldon 365 Bob seems to assume that, what with QT’s love of classic Hollywood kitch, the director perhaps views the Mansons as a kind of pop culture harbinger (or apocalypse as pop puts it) of the death of the old school splendor and bombastic innocence of the movies in particular and culture as a whole.
congrats on the weight loss
Ita not the 9th film of Tarintino, it's about the 12th. It's only the 9th if you don't count 4 Rooms which he's trying to expunge from history Stalin style. And kill bill was 2 films because we paid twice.
He never intended for Kill Bill to be two films, and he only directed part of Four Rooms
Tarantino's only bad film. Very disappointing.
m'kay
Congrats on losing weight bob!
how the hell did you give this movie a 9/10 it was like an episode of Seinfeld, 99% is about nothing with like 10 minutes of hyper violent misogynistic sociopath fantasy. also the scenes with the little girl were the kind of creepy shit I could see Tarantino playing back to himself to make him feel like a man. "that was the best acting I have ever seen, its ok I always wear pads and throw myself at the ground just in case" he needs to feel better about that time he endangered Uma Thurman and injured her, oh and the fact hes an unapologetic racist bag of dicks, I am never watching another one of his films this really brought to light what I have seen for years and after this it is all I think I ever can see.
Im a huge QT fan and this movie was not great for me. Last act was awesome but it wasn't worth the investment. Never cared about the characters.
I think I understand the meta-story but it just didn't do it for me.
Leo's acting was phenomenal. Highlight of the movie.
My brain: Who the f*ck is Sharon Tate? Sorry, I was born in the 70's...
Spoiler free reviews are dumb . It's either a review or it's not.
I feel like the whole world is about to reveal all the cameras and tell me im being punked. I'm sorry, but this was the worst movie I've seen in years. Massive Tarrentino fan but damn, 3 hours of my life im never getting back
Personally, I'm not sure I'm ready to forget Tarantino almost got *Uma Thurman killed* in one of his movies.
(And I love his previous movies)
@@ericwills932 Agreed --consent is key *:)*
Hey, you should do a big picture on whether Tarantino movies is sexist or empowering
e
For those of us alive in 1969 it was a nice trip down memory lane. A lot of pointless scenes. Rather boring for most of the movie. I expected more. .
His review is totally different from Grace feminist
Bob, you do videos for a decade now, and I am well aware you are more about your writing with audio and visual finesse taking a backseat. but after a decade of videos and everyone improving, your super noisy audio is like nails on a chalkboard.
however, good for you to drop some weight
It's a terrible film
*sad european noises*
I thought for sure you would mark it down for not having female protagonists or a more multi-cultural cast
I'm giving it a 5 out of 10.
Based on the fact I definately wouldn't go out of my way to rewatch it. The charm of Pitt/DiCaprio is what really carries this movie. The scene where Booth (Pitt) goes to the camp was more suspenseful than the last quarter of the movie.
It is the worst movie. There is no plot.
Good movie but while watching this movie way more times than I would like to count the only thing I could think was “Yes, Quentin, you like feet. We get it. We know, you sick degenerate”
