#Maleficent2 #Review
"OK, now bring Gargoyles back..."
Shit, yes!!!
Id love that but how? That's a super tall order people.
@@ruminator3570
Follow the *Young Justice* model. A third season on Netflix with the original cast of voice actors. I'm not sure I'd want to see a live action version.
And yes, I'm aware that there is technically a third season. It's unwatchable. Retcon that shit!
With the original writing team!!!!
@@swanpride Michael Reaves is retired, I'm afraid.
Every time I see that rape allegory scene in Maleficent I just think “Man, this scene deserved a better movie...”
Yes to Black Cauldron. So much yes
Really, a full adaptation of the five-book arc would be perfect as a live action Disney+ project. The Chronicles of Prydain deserve to be better-known.
Crunchings and munchings. Gurgi likes crunchings and munchings.
@@AnonymousFreakYT "Crunchings and munchings must be here somewhere!"
Disney has spent so long pretending it doesn't exist, maybe now they can convince people it's brand new.
They could dig up John Hurt to get him to play the horned king
Omg Gargoyles coming back would make my life!
Same
Animated, please. No CGI-live action hybrids. Please.
Sigh...
@@huaweilayhill9182 I mean... If a tv show, yeah, it would want to be animated for price point purposes. I would watch a cgi-liveaction hybrid movie staring Edris Elba or Jason Momoa. Issue would be cramming the complicated narrative into a 2+ hour movie.
@@elijahsmith4761 Awakening crammed the Gargoyle origin into 100 minutes. But my point is that the film should be animated with no live action. Which won't happen. Because cartoons are for kids or something...
I didn’t even know they were making another one of these.
You'll forget about the next one too
I thought I was having a stroke or something. I guess this is real?
Yes they are 💋
My guess is that advertising algorithms figured people who go on prominently-video-game magazine RUclips channels wouldn't really care for this type of movie.
@@theUSpopulation didn't even think about that. but probably correct.
It always bugged me that her name starts out as Maleficent. The word means evil, you can't just ignore that. Why couldn't she have been named "Magnificent" and then the people start calling her Maleficent when she goes evil? That would make way more sense.
Because that sounds really lame?
@@einootspork Lamer than a good fairy being called Maleficent, a word meaning evil? It makes no sense for her to have that name from the start. If you don't like Magnificent then pick something else. But it shouldn't be Maleficent until she turns evil.
@@LnPPersonified A) She was originally a Pure Evil villain. B) She does seem to have a wicked streak and has trouble being good/nice. C) In this franchise she's dark fae, who were constantly hunted and vilified because this movie has a LOT of racism.
You're not wrong.
Reminds me a lot of Sinestro from Green Lantern. That was his name when he was a Green Lantern, before he became a villain (as seen in the comics and various animated projects; the live action movie set it up but it never went anywhere) his name is derived from "Sinister" but characters seem to ignore that in his case, like Maleficent.
Wonder if Linsey Ellis will have a take on this on don't think she took an interest in the first one.
You had me at Michelle Pfeiffer Disney.
But seriously, why are you remaking perfect movies like Aladdin and Lion King when BLACK CAULDRON IS RIGHT THERE!!!??
Atlantis the lost empire would make for a great live action remake.
There's word that they're going to take another crack at Chronicles of Prydain, so it might happen.
because no one went to see Black Cauldron..
Already exist. It's called "Star Gate".
@@BlackClaw2 You mean not Stargate?
I dig women with wings. For me that's reason enough to watch the movie.
Oh yeah, this is a thing that's happening... Not sure how to feel about this new "franchise" honestly.
Edit: BIG YES TO GARGOYLES REVIVAL!
(Maybe it's not meant for you)
I kinda dig the idea of "dark fairytales" for live action disney
Me, yesterday: I’m so f**king sick of Disney live action remakes! They made like one good one; they should make more like Maleficent!
Me, right now: THEY MAKE ANOTHER ONE OF THESE?!?
Maleficent was the only Disney remake that was at all interesting. I'm not surprised that the people working on the sequel did a decent job either.
It was interesting because it wasn't a 1 for 1 scene remake. They did something with the mythos and changed up characters and story. The Jungle Book Remake imo comes CLOSE to this.
The first Maleficent was a prime example of Disney executives taking exactly the wrong message from a film's success. The live action remake of Sleeping Beauty was a big success because it, in essence, turned the story on its head and told you that what you knew was bullshit. Even while adding a lot of subtext to the original. Disney execs saw "Remake all the animated films!"
@@davidv4018 You're right, they are making a lot of money from it. That's a fact that constantly has me asking "Why are people flocking to see inferior or (at best) identical remakes?".
@@bigshow771 because if your options are seeing an identical remake in theaters or scouring eBay for a $200 copy of a Disney vaulted film you're still going to go for the cheaper option.
@@OmegaX9 I might agree with your argument, if the animated version of every single film that has been remade over the past 5 years weren't readily available for purchase on dvd/Blu-ray
@@bigshow771 and they were usually released to coincide with a live-action release. That being said, supposedly Disney Plus is going to put all of their movies on it Service as well so either $8 monthly or however many kids you have X whatever your movie theater rate is.
@@OmegaX9 Not going to lie, I'm seriously thinking about dropping Netflix for Disney+
I typically watch Bob’s reviews after I’ve seen a movie but when I’m on edge about whether or not to see something, I have to skip to the end. He gives away too many details.
I can see your point here
I mean, sometimes the only real way to review a thing is to cover it in its entirety.
Huh, interesting. I've not been interested in the first one, but as a franchise, I do find it interesting that it's moving along the way it is.
Is it weird that my main motivation for seeing this movie is that the horns, wings and fangs is really doing it for me?
I support you
Heck yeah! Disney, do a live action gargoyles. Rosario Dawson as Detective Maza, Winston Duke as Goliath and Luke evans as Xanatos
Why not just Jonathan Frakes again considering Xanatos always kinda looked like him anyway and age doesn’t really matter for that kind of role?
Why not Keith David as Goliath? Man needs more live action work, he's great.
@@angryyogbuscus1578 Pretty sure he'd get the CG treatment, but it's still KEITH F***ING DAVID. Give the role to him and I'd believe he could romance Jolie and Dawson. No offense to Winston, but I don't think he has the right voice for that.
I would like to see a re-cut of Black Cauldron, add back in the stuff that was removed.
@kshiftkometh Yeah I saw some of the unused cels, it seemed really out there for for Disney.
@@CornishCreamtea07 The funnier part is that the cartoon was kind of darker (especially the cut content) than the first two books in the series that were the basis for the film. Tonally it was more in line with the final book, which got real dark real fast.
Oh no, they roped Gerda into this? They low-key badass of fairy tales who got shafted by Disney when they turned The Ice Queen into Frozen, and divorced her from her own story? NOW Disney wants her back, but as a supporting antagonist?
* Sigh *
I needed to see the first Maleficent twice to see what I missed understand how good it was.
Bob's retcons his opinion of the first one.
Not really. He apparently came to this conclusion shortly after he originally saw the first one.
_The Chronicles of Prydain_ made with modern tech and the power of the mouse would be mindblowing.
Gargoyles was already so well ahead of its time, I'm not sure how they could do it justice. But I'd support the effort, anyway.
@@theblocksays oh god no, I don't want it connected to Maleficent at all. I just want more Gargoyles. However, if they wanted Angelina Jolie to voice Demona, I'd be okay with that. Preferably, all the characters would be voiced by the original cast.
YES MORE GARGOYLES PLEASE.... provided you get Greg Weisman back to write it.
BOB! Why would you let me hope, nay dream, even for a second, that we could get a Black Cauldron remake!? Now my mind is turning, and nothing short of Prydain as the Mouse's answer to GoT will satisfy me. Thanks.
I find it interesting that the critical score for this film, as it currently stands on RotTom, is nearly exactly the same as the final critical assessment of the first movie: around 50%. I'll be intrigued to see if this one gets a similar fan-reaction disconnect (70% - basically what Bob here just gave it), which would certainly indicate that Disney is at least maintaining consistency with this, eh . . . "franchise," for lack of a better term.
Also, side note: right there with ya Bob, @#$% YEAH GARGOYLES!!!
“Now bring back Gargoyles a-“
That’s as far you need to go. Take my money. Past, present, future.
Gargoyles brings up an interesting point of the streaming wars. There is going to be a serious talent crunch in the coming years. I'd love for Disney to pick up Weisman and Paur for a Gargoyles revival, but Greg's working with WB on Young Justice. Paur is probably postponing retirement for a couple of projects. It will be the case that even if the studio is willing the talent is spread out.
I love the Black Cauldron book (that entire series really was a childhood favourite) so I am totally down with a Maleficent-esque take on a remake of it
What I don't get is why is Maleficient considered evil. The only thing I can induce is because of her looks and name, or because of propaganda supposedly spread by the king in the first movie because of fear. This explains why the characters consider her evil, but not why WE should consider her evil. She's not, just stylized that way. There is no redemption because she has nothing to redeem for. The only thing she does is take revenge because of being attacked, and she takes revenge only on the one who wronged her (Stefan), No one in the kingdom suffers because of her.
The little Hedgehog like Fairy creature in this movie was the most adorable Fuckin' thing I've ever seen in my Life.
I didn't like the first one, I'll be skipping this one. I would only comment that I'm just now realizing it's October and I forgot about the trailer after it was released during the summer.
If they remake the black cauldron they should dig up John hurt to be the body of the horned king
Oh Bob... Yes... Gargoyles and The Prydain Chronicles.... Let's run a hero's journey franchise with Mouse Money... Sadly it may not be Potter because it doesn't have the anyone could be here aesthetic that captured imagination... But it could definitely work.
I'm divided on this one. On the one hand, everything you said in this review sounds interesting as hell. On the other hand, I can't help but feel like this is the metaphorical head of the recent barrage of Disney live action remakes coming all the way back around to eat the tail of what started this whole trend.
Is this would be the movie to start another live-action barrage though, that would mean the new live-action movies would be taking different paths and be wholly original. I'd be perfectly okay with that.
I was unaware of this, I hate Disney but dang this sounds interesting!
Holy shit I never realised how much I wanted to see a live-action reimagining of Gargoyles until you suggested it.
Also on the list of things I want to see: Angelina Jolie's Maleficent vs Cate Blanchett's Hela in a Gothqueen-off.
1st movie: Maleficent claims _she_ was the True Victim all along..!
*Also 1st movie: Maleficent stabs a newborn baby with Magic Cancer then spies on Underage Girl behind the bushes like a pedo*
Maleficent is the only live action Disney franchise bothering to stray away from the old source material, which is why I even give it a chance.
Yay a positive review! I loved both films and kinds hope it becomes a trilogy.
100٪ agree about them needing to bring back Gargoyles. Since it has been confirmed for Disney + maybe that could generate enough momentum for them to actually do it.
Live action Gargoyles has potential sure and would certainly would fit better into the whole "Can we make more than one film from this?" attitude prevalent in the industry and particularly Disney. But Black Cauldron, oh my days. Yes, yes and yes again. Doesn't have the same serial potential maybe but damn would it make for one hell of a one off.
Oh I hope they redo Black Cauldron...But as like a streaming service miniseries.
Gargoyles got kind of...well, I was gonna say weird, but that's a little on the nose...Unusual in it's narrative so I don't know that it could be redone.
Disney should just concentrate on funding Marvel and Pixar and leave making movies themselves because all they are going to do is make bad movies. But the fact is they won't do that, because even though these movies are garbage they earn money. Hence, all we can do is ignore.
Bob is always on the edge of hulking out.
But does she turn into a dragon in this one?
Really liked the first ones visulas, def. gonna see this sometime!
I second the Black Cauldron. I felt like there was a good movie in there the first time around... they just didn't quite find it. Do it again, but better this time!
I love that Angelina didn't use any makeup effects.
God I would kill for a good Black Cauldron, Even moreso for Gargoyles. I'm getting Disney+ mostly just to binge it.
Re: your “in-studio” joke segment - next time, do a Gaussian blur and not a Motion blur on the object you want to look out-of-focus in the foreground (in this case, that image of the camera). And you don’t need a “radio” or “telephone” EQ on the audio you’re trying to pass off as the scratch track. It’s too much. Great review otherwise
I just love how much fun you obviously had writing this.
Do a TNG voice reunion for a Gargoyles flick and I would see it 100%.
Can everyone fucking **STOP** using the post-rape allegory wake-up scene from Maleficent whenever they the film up??!?
Holy FUCK
The first one was a terrible villain sob story, so I'm not holding out much hope for this one.
I'm a little surprised you didn't think Black Cauldron was the giant turd squeezed out of the ass-end of the crappy Disney movie era? Granted I also have bad associations with the experience of seeing it opening day, alone on a sleeting day in NYC. Worst. Christmas. Ever.
Glad you dug Malificent the second time, I've been thinking I need to do that. I thought critics made a practice of seeing movies twice, but I suppose that's not a hard and fast rule, even for those that do it.
So what you're saying is I need to see this and potentially rewatch the first one?
...
Frazeta does Hot Topic hooked me... also my new band name.
The only reason I knew this was a thing was cuz I saw Far From Home on opening weekend
3:41-3:46
I see what you did there.
I'd be all for a Gargoyles return... but please don't make it live action unless you get the Henson Monster Company behind it.
Oh holy shit I forgot this movie was coming out
I’m watching it for Angelina. Thanks AMC A-List 🤓
I agree to both gargoyles and Black Cauldron
This is not a remake. It's not a live action sleeping beauty, it's literally called maleficent
Using the same source material and characters (for the most part), so technically a remake.
OmegaX9 No
Ajax
Remake: noun. To make again OR DIFFERENTLY.
In this case the differently is “what if the Pure Evil Villain WASN’T evil?” with a different POV character.
Did someone say Gargoyles???
Gimme!
...I’m not going to see it, because I didn’t like the first one (I have a good reason, I swear), but now I’m wondering what could’ve happened if all the remakes actually learned from Maleficent? Like, could you imagine Cinderella if they actually went into the child abuse?
It’s not clear to me what he did not lime about the film ... anyone?
i liked the first. It was a nice change of tone. Didn't notice the feminism honestly. Might rewatch it now I'm a bit older
it would be so great it this was leading towards black cauldron remake
Now, how about a Chicken Little reboot. A movie that doesn't feature a father-character that needed to be *Insert one of Bob's preferred torture methods from his Pixels review here*
Omg! I would love it if they brought back Gargoyles!
I heard a rumor Gargoyles will be on Disney plus
WHAT!?
This actually sounds cool, I think im gonna see it
Best reviewer on the Tubes of You.
Elle Fanning is hot
GARGOYLES!
For the love of god, PLEASE remove the green spill on your face/hands! It's one click in After Effects...
well i guess i'm interested
Are the fairy's actually called the Moors? Or is that just Bob making some pseudo history connection? Weird choice either way
The Moors is the place they live, not a name for the people, in this context it's just a scottish word for swampland. Nothing to do with the north african muslims.
Holy shit this is out already?
"There's not much text here. 7/10" Say what?
Sounds like a big screen grown-up version of descents
I have been denied everything. Even my Reboot!
Only You Can Prevent Fan-Fiction.
Ok I might need to see this one actually
I’m glad at least one of the remakes are trying something interesting with the story. I’m sick of this shot for shot remake lazy bs. I actually prefer this to the actual sleeping beauty. As a kid I found the classic movie dull and boring with a cool villain.
Bob, not that I’m complaining, but you’re starting to sound like the review master Krealplays
oh thank fuck it's good!
I swear, sometimes i really can't tell what the hell bob is saying
i need more gargoyles in my life
you just sold me on both the movies!
poop scoop maloooooop
The only bit I remember from Malificent is the fact that the plot twist was literally the same as Frozen only done worse, and that when I realized the twist was coming, I got wiplash shaking my head in a PLEASE NO motion, begging the movie not to go there.
Does disney pay you in cake?
MovieBob hey let me just rephrase Lindsay Ellis' videos
Big yes for gargoyles
You may be thinking too far about how deep it is Bob..... this film really doesn't look that good.
But he's seen it and you haven't. so it's possible the film is better then the trailers made it appear.
Bob is the Movie Overthinker.
bob i love you but please stop making a big deal out of females in lead roles there not weird or subverve now and havent been for a while and before you bring up captin marvel most people just didnt like the look of brei larson in the role. most people were alredy expecting a feamale captain marvel because she is the more popular verstion
Meh the stories are not such a big part of such movies.
We need a skip intro button on RUclips
There's a reason it's exactly twenty seconds. Skip forward twice.
