Wake me up when this tech is used to make a Beast Wars movie.
actually there's some old CGI style which got lost, because of chasing the technical quality.
It's good that CGI got better now.
But there's something strange and unique in these ancient CGI graphics. Like some visual style on its own.
Oh damn, great idea!
Oh... Oh, no. I did not know I wanted that and now I have to blame you for putting it in my head.
T4 wasHere god I would lose my shit if they made a Beast Wars movie
@@Aredein The closer things come to realism, the more noticeable the flaws are. Every small makes it seem even less realistic then the old movies. With the old cgi, you can ignore the realism issues because it is not made for that
Just wanna point out that hyena clans are in fact lead by an alpha female, with the females being the larger and more dominant members of the species.
@@reddeadjournals1385 They're actually more related to cats than dogs, despite looking more like dogs.
It's because she has the biggest dick
I reject your scientific fact and substitute my theory that everything is a feminist cultural marxist conspiracy
@@IAmGeorgeLucas Stop ruining your own movies you twat
@@reddeadjournals1385 no they aren't.
i'm one of those people who dislike 'all' the disney live action remakes. My stance on that being that they perpetuate the idea that the only way to improve upon an animated movie's idea is to make the material more realistic, which as an animator, dropkicks you in the heart, because animation primarily lets you realize any style you can come up with (realistic or not), and it stinks that people think it needs to look as real as possible in order to be taken seriously. Not that the originals are untouchable, or that they can't try things again with new ideas & updates, but all of this is compounded by a nakedly cynical grab at nostalgia dollars from people who go to see whatever, expressed primarily by how quickly these remakes are all coming out. It just feels less like the heart has been put into it when the originals already exist and these remakes are coming out with tiring frequency. Just my opinion though.
thanks for reading
I generally agree, however I found the Jungle Book remake to be vastly superior to the original animated movie. Granted, every other remake has been mediocre and they aren't even trying to hide the fact that they're recycling all their classics for money.
OddMott 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
They’re banking on name recognition. People that grew up around the time of the Disney renaissance probably have kids now. They’ll see the trailer/poster and think “Nice, it’s a reskinned version of that movie I liked. I can bring my kids in too see it knowing exactly what will happen and what to expect”
The same movie but for the next generation or some bs
Plus Hyena social order actually is a matriarchy, so, one more point for realism there I guess.
How about a new Animal Farm movie? That story is BEGGING for this type of technology.
@@Barnacl3_Boi well goddamn.
I wish they would do live action remakes for movies that would BENEFIT from being made into live action. Atlantis, or Treasure Planet. That's all I want.
Kyle King Black Cauldron?
fuck yeah. I'm for it.
Atlantis or Black Cauldron or any Disney film that didnt land the first time. I don't want them to remake movies that are already good.
....
Treasure planet+Its planned sequel that never got made?
Treasure planet aint gonna happen. Disney fought against it being made for nearly a decade
By the end of the intro, "Lion" and "King" don't sound like words anymore.
Save my money, watch the original lion king and splice it with cute cat RUclips videos.
Agreed.
So, they took all the magic and imaginative visuals out of the original. No thanks. I'll pass.
Pop Culture Primer basically waste of money lets just watch the animated we got that for free
@@clancy2719 it won't be a waste of money because it will probably make a bajillion dollars
@@fangal12 Sure, it was well placed in a time when general audiences had become aware of the Disney remakes yet not sick of them already. It will make tons of money but soon it's gonna go downhill for these remakes, and I hope it's gonna go downhill fast.
I think Disney thinks it's gonna be downhill from here on as well, otherwise we wouldn't have Mulan come soon, a movie that probably won't be a mega hit in the USA but hopefully catch the attention of that juicy Chinese market.
@@Kaefer1973 I hope you're right, but considering they're doing The Little Mermaid next I don't know if they will stop
@@fangal12 With Little Mermaid they play their last ace though, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Lion King are done already.
The "Disney renaissance" is pretty much done after Ariel, and from the classics they did most already as well ( Snow White is still missing I guess).
I doubt they will even bother with Pocahontas or Atlantis so aside from maybe the Hunchback they are out of recognisable names.
And I doubt they will remake the more recent 3D animated movies such as Frozen any time soon.
They already started with their non-animated offense though, as we saw with Mary Poppins, though aside from the Love Bug series there is no Disney live action property that I'd bother with (and yes the Original "The Love Bug" was the best movie ever made by far and without contest, so a remake may be worth a look. I'm probably not just saying that just because I'm a fanatical Volkswagen Beetle fan).
Jesus dude this is like the fifth video in a row where the jump cuts are cutting off what you are saying. I didn't say anything on the others 'cause I figured you'd notice and clean it up a bit, but its super distracting and makes the whole production feel rushed.
So a decent tech demo, just like the trailers said it be. Good to know.
You're missing the point of what he said. It doesn't look bad, it's a different visual of the story. Did you get mad at the Broadway play for using costumes instead of cartoons?
It's not a great tech demo, either. Those "photorealistic" animals are way less expensive than real live animals. It looks more like they're taxidermied corpses being jiggled around by off-screen puppeteers.
The musical numbers are relegated to background music, it seems. And the animals have, well, animal faces with limited or no expressions.
I just can't get past that he thinks it's pretty good. Bob is very impressed by the technica features.
@@jameswhite3043 because it is good for what it is, you're not going to mistake a Da Vinci painting for a Van Goh. He doesn't argue that it was done better, he constantly says the original is the superior version, but he can still appreciate a great effort done by well-meaning Studio. None of these remakes will ever compare to their original, I thought you all understood this by now?
We nerds all know the original was better, but your average pleb that thinks the mindset of “animation is for kids” is a FACT, does not.
I think a live action _Hunchback of Notre Dame_ could work by upping its themes and messages.
With live footage of the Notre dame roof burning
I am DOWN for a HoND remake if we make the gargoyles a Greek chorus of sorts.
I would watch it if it was more like the la Jolla musical which was like the disney version but darker
Charles Dance as Frollo or GTFO
I just have my fingers crossed praying that they do a Atlantis live action movie🤞🏽😣🤞🏽
Hey man! Spoilers! I didnt know the Lion King was going to end like... The Lion King!
Jeesh. I wasn't done watching the video and saw your spoiler filled comment. Why didn't you hide it?
Thanks alot for nothing!
Yeah yeah fuck people eho dont want spoilers
@@iandakariann Hey man spoiler for Sleeping Beauty. There is a beauty... who sleeps.
@CaptainLazer85 YOU BASTARD! I WAS JUST ABOUT TO WATCH THAT.
Call me when they use this tech to make a Gargoyles movie
Well maybe this whole movie was just a training exercise for the London clan?
Jordan Peele is interested in directing an adaptation.
Ah, a man of culture.
Nah, use hand drawn instead. We need more of that again.
So it's the Lion King if what you wanted from the Lion King was a tech demo and not a piece of art.
Thanks for commenting and not actually watching the video, he specifically said the visuals are amazing but the story is the exact same. He even told you this video was going to be about talking about the amazing visuals . The actual problem is its content still hasn't changed in over 20 years.
@@shindean That's kinda my point you troglodyte.
There's no reason for the movie to exist except as a tech demo, there's nothing of artistic value in it that hasn't been transplanted directly from the original and plenty of the art of the original has been lost.
@@pikemand1410 No that's you projecting, little boy. You interpreted him saying experimental as a tech demo. Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Civil War was an experiment, how'd that work out for Marvel?
@@shindean The only thing being 'experimented' with in this movie is the tech.
Thus it's a tech demo.
@@shindean Your examples are not in the same class. Thor's experiment was "okay, how much can we add and change to the stories of thor and how fun can we make it". Guardians was Gunn's baby so it was a separate thing. And civil war was an experiment to add spy drama's plotpoints to superhero's movies.
Think of this more like Ang Lee's The Hulk, where he cared less for the source material and tried to push experimental art styles and camera work.
It was an interesting experiment, but many fans where dissatisfied with the results, and I believe something similar will occur here, only with a different box office cause duh, it's the lion king.
Wait wait wait......make mine a CUB sandwich!
I liked the opening, "do you like the Lion King? This is the Lion King"
bdiddi But with all the emotion, passion and effort completely sucked out
This is going to be so weird when Disney buys RDJ's likeness so they can make Iron Man movies with him forever. (Revived, rebooted or set before the death).
Iron Man every few years forever. Like James Bond, Batman or Doctor Who but without ever having to recast the actor by just having a voice impressionist and a super computer on-hand.
"You know Pepper, sometimes I don't know where I end and the machine begins".
*flashbacks to A.I. Tony from Bendis’s run*
This movie is as lifeless as Mufasa’s corpse
*yells in back* too soon
Kyan Love it’s been 20 years!!!
Still too soon.
Just like the 1998 Gus Van Sant “Psycho” remake then.
No, because that movie has absolutely nothing to offer in comparison to the original. This, at the very least, has interesting technology and will spark a discussion about its own existence. The Psycho remake has no place in history. This film, for better and worse, does.
God damn it, I almost completely forgot about that. Why'd you have to remind me?
@@oscarmccormack1611 Not true. It offers squirmy Vince Vaughn which is great if you ever wanna feel deeply uncomfortable.
@@oscarmccormack1611 the psycho remake's place in history is being the apotheosis of pointless remakes
@@oscarmccormack1611 Well, the remake is in color, so wether you like it or not, it does add something new. I'm not saying that justifies its existence, but I'd argue that an upgrade from black and white to color is comparable to an upgrade from 2D animation to photorealistic 3D animation.
So basically, there's no reason for me to watch this.
Shout out to Indian company
Moving Picture Company (MPC), Bangalore which did all of the animation for lion king
Actually a lot of, if not all, of the animation was done in MPC London. MPC is a global company that often does different parts of the pipeline in different locations.
Yeah doing it globally at multiple sites simultaneously is literally the only way to finish these things to deadline.
If this film had integrated more of the stage musical version's songs and story scenes, that would have been a compelling reason to see it. For instance, "The Madness of King Scar" culminating in Nala's big number, "Shadowlands."
"I feel like we've all seen the fucking Lion King" got a big laugh and a thumbs up!
I love the design of Scar in this film. He looks horrific yet kind of pitiable.
Elton John didn't write the song lyrics, Time Rice did. Elton did the melodes.
Pretty much from the beginning, we knew this was going to be a technical experiment. Jungle Book was the digital soundstage thing with a human actor at the center to focus on. This is that but with the human character taken out. It’s them seeing if they really need a “Mowgli” to pull off a movie like this.
The main purpose of the reboots is to experiment slightly in audience/form/etc while maintaining the "Disney Princess" Brand in the public zeitgeist. Holding Pattern, Safe Research.
save for Dumbo, it seems to be working.
Nope it's nostalgic bait. All about cash.
The fact that it can replenish its own income guaranteed allows them to use these films for the reasons I mentioned. Of course they also need to be profitable.
Make an in depth analysis on ren and stimpy
Hell yeah 😘
Oh whoa, the green glow is almost completely gone. I know color grading isn't exactly the easiest thing. Nice job.
H Matthysen hey he finally did it! It was bothering me for a while!
That was, I guess, a fair assessment.
One thing you missed is the songs. I feel like listening to the soundtrack is a good test to see if you’ll like the movie or not.
Bob: Y'all, stop making big budget remakes so I don't have to watch them.
Disney: [Remakes its entire catalog]
So... It's a cool tech demo, basically.
I don't think anyone expected this to be outright *bad*, I mean you would have to fail on purpose to fuck up The Lion King with the resources this movie was given. No, what I had hoped to hear from you Bob was: did it address any of the flaws of the original movie? Lion King was one of the very first movies I ever saw and I will love it forever but that doesn't mean it didn't have some jumps in logic and the like. Why would I not just watch my blu-ray of the Lion King instead of going to see this?
I'm still trying to figure out how the new film is almost a half hour longer than the original. I mean...how much in the way of new scenes, etc, was in this? Cause nothing more than a moment or two here or there stood out as being crazy new.
They did a better job on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Aslan still makes me do double takes.
Aslan looks quite good considering the movies were 2005 and 2008, particularly in the second movie. He feels like he has more weight than and emotion than in the new Lion King. I suspect some of that is because with a more limited use of cgi the eyes are more forgiving and they can spend more time while making the movie to make Aslan work.
Poor poor Kimba the white lion. This could have flopped SO HARD and people would be crying out for the original story to be given a big budget release. Instead, Disney keeps on 75% trucking.
I did like Shenzi character, and Scar seemed a little more sinister in a way, sort of. Nothing beats Jeremy Irons voice though.
They were so preoccupied wondering if they could of make this movie that didn't wonder if they should of.
What is the name of back ground track that plays when Bob is talking. I've feel I've heard it before but I can't place it.
What is the highest rated movie by Bob Chipman?
Well I'm sure he's given several 10/10.
Sounds like you could roughly get the same experience by just watching the trailers or some of the clips on RUclips. Heck, I was already impressed by Jungle Book 2016 and that actually tried to be its own thing in some way.
What's next, Universal studios doing live action remakes on their animated movies like Land before time and An American tail?
Hey now. If we got Land Before Time remakes in the style of Disney’s Dinosaur, we’d be all over that.
Tim Rice wrote the lyrics (Elton writes tunes) :)
Live action remakes of movies that had human characters makes sense. Even 3D animating them makes sense . . . but Lion King being "live action" remade didn't make sense. People who say it's "amazing" are the same people who would say they liked a game because "oh look nice graphics".
So... crap. Got it.
If the goal was to showcase this new motion-capture 3D technique using a property that was ALWAYS going to be a hit when they re-released to theatres, I'm glad that that goal was a success. I really do look forward to Disney (or another studio) making use of these techniques on original ideas and new stories. Frankly, even if they continue the great cinematic remake machine for another decade, I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of Adventures of Milo and Otis (without all of the dead kittens and puppies this time) or Homeward Bound using these techniques.
In the end it doesn't matter how realistic something looks as long as the visual style matches the rest of the game I mean movie.
Pass.
Kind of wish Bob had also given what he would score/10 the original Lion King. The new CGI remake just looks like a drab washed out husk of the original, less colorful or expressive. It's been forever since I've watched it but i saw a side by side of the original with the new one showing the same scenes from the remake shown in the trailer and it just doesn't hold up. Technically impressive beyond a doubt but I've seen the story before and I'd rather just re-watch the one people loved rather than the pretender wearing it's skin. At least that's where i land on it, don't know if other people agree?
This decade's Avatar. Awesome new movie technology, $10 previously-used script.
"speaking is the only break from reality"?
Granted I've only seen trailers, but, well ...Mufassa and Simba... are not very male lions then? I mean I've seen lions and other big cats. Even gotten to know a few. I know where their spherical bits should be. I can pretty clearly see even in the trailers that they're not in that place.
I bet that would be a pretty big break from reality if you were actually a lion watching it.
Ah, the good ol' green screen/wall.
6/10 "Its the lion king".
BOB HATES THE LION KING!!! D:
Seriously though, I'm not too interested in the live action remakes. But I'm glad to hear they're at least service-ably good...?
Can confirm
The original is pretty much a perfect film, but I had one complaint it would be that the backgrounds are a little too cartoony for the grandeur of the story, it was done to have them match the animals but I'm used to anime where they don't care about having almost photorealistic backgrounds, don't know if it's worth the tradeoff for the character animation and song direction, but I think I'll get a kick out of this, plus I love Jon Favreu's direction.
These cuts are getting a bit tight Bob, you need to let a sentence actually hit
I'm sorry, I just don't see the point. (Yes, it's to make money, ha ha reductivism is fun.) Like, the point of making animated animal movies is that you can make the animals *animated.* You can exaggerate their movements. You can make them more relateable to the audience. I can't imagine that someone would ever prefer to watch a version of this story with stony-faced creatures standing around while human voices fall out of their otherwise perfectly animalistic heads. You only lose emotional content; nothing is gained besides technical accolades.
Use this tech and make Watership Down
That was already tried very recently. The cgi wasn't very good though.
Wait, Zooey's dad shot this? That gives me a reason to see it then. "The Black Stallion" was the first movie I ever saw that I realised was beautiful.
The Lion King is the one of the big four Disney Renaissance movies that I liked the least (not hatred, just indifference) so I will definitely give this one a miss.
I told people who were all hyped around me there was 1 no need for this film and 2 the original animated will prove to be better. I just did not expect to be as right in both points as this flick made my points....
is this not also animated?
Can you confirm that they made "Can you feel the love tonight?" take place during the day in this version? Because that's hilariously inept.
Yep they do. Its a running meme amongst ppl who seen it lol
So as someone who hates point for point remakes and feels everything between Little Mermaid to before Atlantis is timeless before Atlantis (exception being Pocahontas) this review makes it easy for me to say no on this.
Again if want to see these films I’ll watch the timeless 2D animated film. Live-action does nothing more as an incentive, because all it does is limit visual decision making.
Already on the fence and you summed up my feeling on it perfectly
Simba and mufasa had no balls
Yeah I'll pass.
Yeah, there's a bit to it than just comparing two movies to one another.
I mean also Shenzi needed to be the proper alpha female because in Hyenas in particular the males have almost no social power compared to the females, but who's counting
2:42 oh you mean the far superior version.
hmm... you were too kind
3d or 2d?
What really sold me on the animation here is that bit in the trailer where Scar's right ear suddenly twitches before he sends the hyenas after Simba.
I can't wait wait for Black Mermaid to smash the box office!!..........Said NO ONE FUCKING EVEER
When will modern technology evolve to the point where we can green screen Bob without making him look like a carrot?
More positive than expected, interesting.
how often do your videos start with snide claims that your own video shouldn't need to exist
Sounds like Happy Feet could use this kind of storytelling, since that was already in a documentary style
I could've sworn Aladdin only came out like a week ago, but... nope.
Month
So it's the lion king again just used as a tech demo for this new stile
When are we going to get a live action hunchback of Notre dame movie
jesus lol, that'd be heartwrenching!
Hyenas are matriarchial, so that change makes sense at least.
Solid review
I know it's just a cash grab, but why bother remaking any movie if you're not going to do anything new with it?
Or, hell, with the money they put into this, they could've made an animated sequel with artistry and tech that rivals the original in addition to the voice talent they have with this remake. 3D can be made to emulate 2D, if done well (Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse is a great example)
But no, apparently the D thinks they're past what made them a household name
The editing on your voice is terrible!
Thank god they will never touch Hunchback of Notre Dame
They are going to remake it actually.
Hunchback is like the only movie I wanted a live action remake of.
Kinda torn, I'm a massive nerd for animation, so as boring as I find the Disney live action remakes I do wanna see this glorified tech demo.
Easily the worst movie of 2019 featuring cats...
it's probably not as good as before!
Dude keep it up. The first minute is gold
At last it is here
6/10? alright I'm sold. thanks Bob! looking forward to seeing it my self!
the fuck is up with the colors in this video
Its the lion king but with worse voice acting.
I'll pass on all of these new Live-Action Remakes. Save me some cash for things that actually matter, like keys.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Remakes are bad and Disney is too big to fail unless they are literally targeted for destruction
And Zazu is also blue
I wonder when they will do the photo realistic CGI remake of "Babe"?
Because, that movie has been rendered obsolete with this new technology.
No need to carefully corral and train animals when you can spend $20 million dollars making a pig that does EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED.
I feel a bit dissapointed that you use "the plot of the lion king " instead of "hamlet with lions"
Its not quite as Hamlet as everyone says it is. Though it does have Shakespearean elements to it. Kyle Kallgren did a video on all the potential (and contraversial) inspirations behind the film. Arguably, a lot more in common with a West African epic and a Japanese anime show than Shakespeare, but North Altantic/European cultural hegemony insists no other could have such sway on the imagination
To be fair, Disney itself leaned into the Shakespeare angle, making its the sequel Romeo and Juliet (but it’s a comedy instead of a tragedy this time) and Lion King 1/2 their “Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are dead”.
If they had somebody competent to play Nala instead of Beyoncewat? it might of been worth it.
TalesAscen I was thinking Jennifer Hudson might have made a better choice
