- News recently came out about movies like Back to the Future and Jaws possibly being remade. This seems like a terrible idea, but is it possible that Hollywood could do a good remake? Subscribe: goo.gl/9AGRm
We look at movies like Ocean’s 11, The Thing, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Italian Job, and many more to see if good Hollywood remakes are possible and what that means for future movie remakes.
What movies do you think should never be remade? Do you think there are any good Hollywood remakes? Do you think there are any movies that should be remade? What are the worst parts about remaking movies?

You forgot one that you actually mentioned in your villains list, Cape Fear, and since we're on Robert Mitchum I'd see a night of the hunter remake
Scarface, 3:10 to Yuma, Cape Fear, The Magnificent Seven, King Kong
+Randy Nguyen 310 to Yuma is a good one. And in another direction, The Hills Have Eyes (2006) is arguably better than the '77 version if you want to be horrified. I know, terrible example, but the original just seems tame compared to modern horrors.
I'm at 7 and a half mins waiting for them to move on from talking about Jaws and Back to the Future, he wanted to talk about good remakes. Scarface, Casino Royale, Dredd to name a few.
I love that Psych got a shout-out. It's one of my favorite TV shows ever!
This is actually harder than it should be. The Little Shop of Horrors, Freaky Friday, the Coen Brother's version of True Grit, Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights or perhaps Hitchcock's own remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much?
Now I want a Cinefix Now Roundtable remake/reboot/sequel with a diverse cast of anthropomorphic animals and a humanoid.
Dredd (2012) was a great remake
Yeah
Totally agree with you brother
+Pedro Costa if dredd is a remake then so is batman begins and man of steel they were both good
+Pedro Costa Is it really considered a remake if it is making a film based on the same book rather than making a movie based on a precious movie? Yes, it is a new film based on the book. I'm just not sure if this makes it a remake of the movie.
*reboot
Wow, no love for Dredd? I'm disappointed
+Cringle Berg Not really a remake. It's a new adaptation of the comics.
Edit: But they're counting reboots etc. also I guess, so forget it.
+Cringle Berg batman begins man of steel also applies if dredd does
I'm with you. True Grit, both versions are adaptations of a book. They counted that as a reboot so I think Dredd and Batman, etc count
+Cringle Berg Dredd falls under the "reboot a bad movie" category.
stallones dredd wasnt bad in its day i found it amusing at least then again im one of the guys that like batman and robin for what it is lol
The Coen brothers' True Grit is great.
Back to the Future IV should involve a plot where Marty's attempts to get home require the sacrifice of an expensive and critical piece of technology in a 1985 science lab, which then leads to 2015 being far less technologically advanced than it was in the 2nd film.
+Cineflix @Christina
You mentioned Jumper near the end of the round table, and while I never saw the film version (looked awful) it is based on a book with the same name by Steven Gould, which is a really fun read and deals with some pretty heavy stuff.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo anyone?
George Miller has stated that Mad Max is this hero, mythological person that has a lot of stories attributed to him, which is why Max can be anyone. It's these different things that have happened involving this character that may or may not have even been there.
One of my favorite remakes/adaptations is Harrison Ford's The Fugitive from 1993 based on the '60s TV show, which was also great.
In remaking a movie for TV, the Jack Klugman/Tony Randall series of The Odd Couple is one of the best sitcoms of all time, and the Walter Matthau/Jack Lemmon film version is an oft-forgotten classic.
While were on TV shows that became awesome movies ... Mission impossible series
My favorite TV series that came from a movie was Stargate SG-1. Not exactly a reboot, since it carried on from the events and characters of the movie, but it did rework some of the core aspects entirely - eg the nature of the aliens - and tonally it was a completely different animal once they got the characters figured out properly. Teal'c!
Jumper: The other teleporter was actually named Griffin. A book was already written titled "Griffin's Story" that would have made an excellent back story to Jumper
All remakes starring Matt Damon are awesome:
-Ocean's Eleven
-The Bourne Identity
-The Talented Mr. Ripley
-The Departed
-True Grit
Good video. In the Heat of the Night is a movie made in 1967 that had a TV series based on it that ran from 88-95.
I think even though The Punisher is appearing in Daredevil Season 2, I do think that a The Punisher remake with Thomas Jane would be fantastic. After the "Dirty Laundry" short film, I think that it deserves another chance at revival. Maybe Christopher McQuarrie or Bryan Singer can write/direct it?
I was with them until the mentioned the remake of The Italian Job. What a piece of crap that was.
"The Ten Commandments" (1956) was a remake of "The Ten Commandments"(1923) both directed by Cecil B DeMille
"The Wizard of Oz"(1939) was the sixth Wizard of Oz Movie
I wish they had mentioned the Scream tv show. Which was kind of a reboot
emake of the classic Scream movies.
I think the biggest problem is what giant babies everyone is. anyone who has ever used the phrase "raped my childhood" without irony, is a douche.
But the problem with reboots and remakes, is they're initiated by studios, and not filmmakers. in other words, they're creative decisions being made by uncreative people.
+Brian Sager I agree, but I'd say that's also the problem with the Hollywood system in general. Any moderately high-profile project starts with a guy in a suit snapping a pool cue in half and throwing it into a room full of creatives, and ends with me watching Fant4stic.
one of the best remakes has to be "Funny Games". While being a shot for shot remake of the original 1997 film, this later version brings its own value to the table through its new cast. Coming 10 years after the original, this 2007 remake definitely holds its own with the original and definitely warrants the viewing.
To be negative; you didn't mention remakes of silent pictures which of course were often remakes of theatrical plays. Two of my favourite remakes of all time are The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) - original (1922) - and Mad Love (1935) - originally an Austrian film called The Hands of Orlac (1924). You've probably seen Flynn's Robin Hood but if you haven't seen Peter Lorre's performance in Mad Love make it the next thing you watch. Yes, do that.
I can't believe that after all the hubbub, not a single one of you brought up the Ghostbusters remake.
Idea for a video: "Movies that inspired Quentin Tarantino!!" Come on!!! lest do it.....
I really enjoyed the Evil Dead reboot. It was as good as the first two, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it. Also, I didn't hate Prometheus, although that was probably just because of the cast, certainly nowhere near as good as Alien though.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is another one that I really like, it's a presequel-inbetweequel to Twin Peaks, which makes it a film based on a TV show, which is the opposite of what you talked about for a bit in the video. But I do really love that film, I know it pretty evenly splits TP fans between who hates it and who loves it but I am most definitely in the "love it" camp.
Remakes can work if they're given to people who actually want to be storytellers and do new things with the source material. But the problem with all the remakes happening today is, more often than not, they're made just for the sake of making them--they're cash-ins.
Hollywood needs to start being creative and stop remaking movies! Leave the classic movies alone. They better never remake The Outsiders. I love everything about that movie.
The Ring was Japanese (there was a Korean adaption of it though). Here's an interesting little tidbit. The Ring had a sequel 'Ransen' (a.k.a. Spiral) that was more sci-fi and explained how the tapes worked, but it wasn't as well recieved by audiences so they remade the sequel as Ring 2 (which is my favorite in the series tbh). Ransen is sometimes refered to as "The Forgotten Sequel" XD I didn't hate it though, but Ring 2 was waaay better.
I completely agree on the comment about Beavis and Butthead. I thought it would have been more successful, too. I'm also waiting on that kick-ass Dune adaptation that is permanently in development.
Dredd anyone?
Whoever owns Jaws right now is missing the real cash cow opportunity- make a fucking USS Indianapolis movie with young Quint as the main character. He starts off as a young sailor, he loses his close friends, he comes near death, but he survives to tell the tale. The awesome, atmospheric, monologuing tale.
Dredd is a much better movie than the Stallone garbage.
I'm half way through and I'm waiting for them to mention Cape Fear
If you want a recent remake, James Mangold's '3:10 to Yuma'. If you want a classic remake, DeMille's 'The Ten Commandments'.
Favorite remakes Dredd 2012, Cape Fear, and the Fly
I'm surprised the Neil Bloomkamp "Alien" film didn't come up in the reboot list of films.
Hey Ti! Sticky Fingaz and Fredro Starr are two different members of ONYX.
You can remake things that have been remade a lot like Pride and Prejudice/Bridget Jones' Diary and Sherlock! (especially because of the copyright availability)
+Cinefix
You guys just mentioned Cape Fear in your best villains movie list
Hollywood has done some great remakes. The iconic versions of Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, and The Wizard of Oz are all remakes. Hitchcock remade a good movie of his own, The Man Who Knew Too Much, into one of his top tier movies. You guys even mentioned of it in a previous episode and its iconic scene of an assassin timing his shot to an orchestra to mask the sound of the gunshot. BTW, we did have a Jaws 3D remake - Jurassic World. The shortest time for a remake probably goes to Death at a Funeral (although The Girl With Dragon Tattoo might be a close second).
haha, on the IMDB for the Blade series he is listed as Sticky Fingaz!
There are a lot of "sequels" of one character too. Like Frasier, Better call Saul, and Joey in Episodes.
Let's clarify: The Thing From Another World (1951) and The Thing (1982) were actually 2 different adaptations of the original story called "Who Goes There!". So, the 1982 version isn't really a remake of the 1951 original.
They haven't mentioned "The Planet of the Apes" (I suppose they couldn't mention enough in a half an hour). Anyhoo, the 2001 feature is so different from the 1968, that I wouldn't consider it a remake.
As for "Clash of the Titans": The 2010 (OK) version wasn't based on the original Greek myth. It's actually a re-done version of the 1981 (classic!) film. A couple of noticeable differences are: ALMOST no Bubo in the 2010 (you would see that owl for ONLY a few seconds... and that's it!), and Io was added, who would be in a relationship with Perseus, which kinda made Andromeda useless!
There was a Back to the Future TV show, and everyone forgets, but it was fun.
You forgot "old crew takes on the new one"
The Battlestar Galactica TV show was incredible.
I thought they were about to mention then didn't. Yes awesome. Much better than the original series, though the original series was great for its time
True Grit, would have put that on the untouchable list, but the remake was really good.
The Wizard of Oz (1939) is the best remake, hands down. The secret to a property being good remake fodder is that it shouldn't originally be a film. The best adaptations are the ones that were originally books or plays.
Are the Nolan Batman movies considered remakes? If so, those were my favorites.
Maybe they should listen to Back to the Future II and just make Jaws 3D.
+FillmFilms There was a Jaws 3-D. It was released in 1983.
I wrote this in spanish just a few days ago, in which I talked about some remakes and reboots that were able to improve the source material or previous versions. Since I'm not interested in translating all of it, I will say that almost all of those that I mentioned I consider were better or at least achieve something good that is new.
Otro ejemplo: An Affair to Remeber, con respecto a Love Affair, ambas dirigidas por McCarey.
The Last Starfighter would be good for a remake.
I think a difference may lie in a fimlmaker wanting to reboot/remake something vs. a studio wanting to.
I actually liked the remake of "Open your eyes" called "Vanilla Sky". It was a respectful but simply better looking movie with a great mixtape of a soundtrack. Most people didnt like it though.
A lot of the good remakes have somebody with a vision for the remake and a reason to remake, while the bad remakes usually have a businessman in the background, who simply wants to make some money out of the name.
One of my favourite remakes was the 2005 Amityville Horror remake. it's not that great a movie but for some reason i still love it and watch it regularly!!!
Planet of the Apes had a great remake. I don't know if it counts but terminator the Sarah Connor chronicles was also a good show based on the movie
If a studio were to be the money behind a creative team that really wanted to tell a story from an older movie I'd have no problem giving any remake or reboot a try. Every production of a play I've seen has a different take; some are better than others but very few are actually creatively bankrupt. The people doing it are certainly trying to earn a living but usually they aren't trading on the name and actually have to work to make it good. Movie studios on the other hand more often than not go into remakes and reboots not for the love of the story but for the bottom line; worse than that is when you have people involved that expect it to be a hit so try to add thing like toys that they can sell after the fact.
Big Fat Greek Wedding had a show on NBC...
I haven't watched Blade the series but I have had it recommended to me. I was told that it was very good and had a really good recurring female character in it.
Guys please!!!!!!!!!!!!! make a top ten most underrated films of 2015...
the first lists where amazing
A movie that's being made into a TV show that you guys missed is Minority Report.
And Ash vs the Evil Dead
Yes, the can...but will they?
I think most aversion against remakes / reboots nowadays, is that there are too many of them and the quality is...questionable.
It seems that they want to do a "Producers Number" on us: make a lot of money with as little effort and costs possible.
The other thing is, similar to cartoon & videogame adaptations, is that sometimes I get the impression that neither the writer, nor the director ever watched the show/movie, they just read the back cover and thought that was enough research for the day.
How about this: a TV show based on a movie that was based on a TV show... The Fugitive!!! Beat that.
Was the Rosemary's Baby TV show any good? I never saw it, but I love the original movie
what about the up coming bladerunner sequel... of course this episode was a couple years ago.
Universal better not touch Jaws. There would be such an outrage over that that it would most likely bomb at the box office. They'd put the shark in the movie too much, which would ruin it. The improvisations and the music were what made Jaws so effective. The lack of the shark left so many things up to the viewer's imagination and when a person's imagination runs wild, it can think up some incredibly creepy stuff. I doubt that Jaws would be as scary if it were remade and hasn't Hollywood take into account what happened with the last two sequels? Those were two of the biggest box office bombs in history.
I'm surprised the word "Scarface" never came up once lol
Idk if anyone has said this and I know I'm late to the party, but what about cape fear?!?!
Merging Dream work with Universal is one of the baddest news for Hollywood .
Love Invasion Of The Body Snatchers with Donald Sutherland!
How about rereleasing Jaws and Back to the Future into theaters? Please?? I'd go see each at least 5 times!
Jaws remake- I'm okay with
But a remake for back to the future?! THATS INSANE!
Does he wear that Astros cap in everything?
Uh oh T got schooled.... 20:25
Fredo Starr and Sticky Fingaz are actually 2 different members of Onyx. They are not the same person.
And Sticky was Blade in the TV show.
Could Disney do a remake of 1939 classic " Wizard of Oz starring Massie Williams as Dorothy coming in Summer 2017?
Make a guy from the 80s travel to 2015 and let him be amazed at our technology. Although, he'll probably get stuck on internet porn and never come back to the past...
They already did. Multiple times. The Wolfman, Carrie, King Kong, 310 to Yuma, Night of the Living Dead, The Thing, The Departed, Conan the Barbarian, Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street. I'm beyond sick of this obsessive, anti-remake bullshit. Many of them are great, some are masterpieces, and a select few are even better than the originals. Better a remake than a sequel IMO.
I think they covered your point. Choose one that wasn't so successful to remake. That tends to work better. Conan remake is not good by all accounts. They tried to "remake" or add to the Thing recently, but studio got in the way by insisting on CGI which ended up looking crap.
Good Prequels are Red Dragon, X men First Class, and X men Days of Future Past
the dude in the hat sounds like seth macfarlane
Grease isn't a 50 year old movie. It's 40 this year and 38 when this Roundtable took place.
Rebooting JAWS is unthinkable!! After MASTERPIECES like Jaws 2, Jaws 3D and Jaws: The Revenge - can a Jaws film live up to the LEGEND??!! phew...
what is the differents between a reboot and remake?
+Jordan Producties Four letters.
Good Clip
hahahaha thnx
I know it was a book series first, but speaking of TV shows that were better than their previous movie adaptation - HANNIBAL. The Silence of the Lambs was good (can't really say that same for the other movies), but the TV show is so much more in-depth and artistic. Hopkins vs. Mikkelsen is like a cartoon-y devil with red skin and horns vs. Lucifer disguised as a human. Hopkins is easy to hate and a great villain, but Mikkelsen twists up your emotions. You hate Hannibal while also feeling sorry for him, making him almost an anti-hero (even though Will Graham is the actual hero/anti-hero).
Hey! They got a table!
Isn't Temple of Doom a prequel, Lacey?
It's because those hacks have no more original ideas, EVERYTHING is either adapted from a book or a remake these days. I want a new fuckin story/characters that will leave a lasting impression for generations.
The fugitive movie was great. And red dragon was a decent remake
To be honest a VERY guilty pleasure of mine is the Charlie's Angels movie
Let's not forget the cop drama TV series based on The Crow. Awful in every way.
Is Clint the only one allowed a beverage?
you thought nobody would regognize that NIN shirt, didn't ya?
De Palma's Blow Out is an excellent remake of Antonioni's Blow Up!
Star gate SG1 is a good TV show
I think your list of seven things can be summed up by one thing. Don't re-re-re anything the majority of people care about. You can remake something a small group of people care about, because screw those guys what are they going to do about it. But if people care they compare and you can never live up to the rose colored nostalgia fueled version of the movie that lives in the brains of the people who care.
Disney made a pilot for a TV show based on Clerks that never saw the light of day until recently when it leaked online. Suffice to say, it was awful.
Stargate?
