you know what movie I wanna see? a movie portraying "thug" and "gangsta" culture from the roots no one wants to talk about. Reagan administration drug trafficking. city ordinancing. bank redlining. no excess, no super successful rapper (not that rap biopics are necessarily a bad thing) I want a movie that keeps a character in the dirt from start to finish, beats him down, and says "hey, you know what? that 12 years a slave thing isnt just distant past guilt because of your nationality, it also happened (albeit more subtly) during your lifetime, and your conservative sacred cows participated.
Hell, YES!
This is something Crowshaw from Zero Punctuation should do more often and that is, reviewing something he likes. Like with how nice it is to hear Bob talk about a movie he enjoyed and people should go see, Crowshaw needs to talk about games he actually enjoys and would tell people to go and play.
The conversation of race relations aside, having someone make a very frank and upfront depiction of the horrors of such a horrid time in US history while also making fun of the things that terrorized many and lay bare what many have trouble not just talking about but thinking of without getting angry, foaming at the mouth or just feigning ignorance is a major feat. Quentin Tarantino sir, you have my respect. And regardless of guilt, white or otherwise, things like this enable a conversation.
I can see where you are coming from, but the unique thing about Loki is the lengths he goes to to complete his objective, combined with the fact that he takes great pride in his mischief. Red Skull had a fantastic actor and also the unusual story of being kicked out of the Nazis for being too evil...kicked out of the Nazi "empire" (if I've worded that right)
Bane is interesting on the comics but I didn't feel that vibe in the film, also his voice was really hard to hear at times.
Bane was very well educated, actually, and was one of the first villains to figure out who batman was. What's more is that he was the first person to decommission batman. There's a lot of background too him but just know that he's a genius first and a venom-empowered superhuman second.
it's kind of a relief to hear somebody not raving about how funny it was to them-I had a lot of trouble laughing-I loved it, but I had A LOT of trouble laughing.
The mandingo stuff ids actually lifted from exploitation flicks.
You know when watching this movie I couldn't help but think or blazing saddles...
WOW FINALLY IN 720p!!!!! YAYS!
"The D, IS SILENT!"
Oh I love how Bane gets kicked out of the great bad guys list but the Vampire from Twilight isn't XD
I think that Bane was just silly. I mean the way EVERY SINGLE line was written for him, was like listening to a philosophy student burbling out everything he heard in class that day, trying his hardest to sound deep.
It just didn't work. They were trying so hard to make him "deep" that it made me roll my eyes every time he finished a sentence. I'm not blaming Tom Hardy, more the writers in this case.
Although he did sound like Shawn Connery with a diaper strapped to his face.
Bane sounded like a fucking farmer.
Great review, man.
The one problem with Django is Broomhilda. She doesn't get any agency, any character development, and the movie even goes out of it's way to take away her lines. She's just a pretty prize to drive the plot.
I love you movie bob, give me a fucking break, the red skull was a better villain than bane? You have got to be fucking kidding
Ikr?and he has the guy from twilight? While the guy from no country for old men did not even make it?
+George W Kush yes, yes he was.
haltopen12 do explain
George W Kush Bane was a wasted potential of what could have been the best villain in the nolan batman trilogy. Bane in the comics was one of the worlds greatest genius's in addition to being one of the strongest, and he wasn't a lackey for talia al ghul or ra's al ghul. He was a criminal mastermind in his own right. He was a master of multiple fields of scientific study and master of as many martial arts as bruce wayne. The movie version was just a thug numbed down with pain meds and a stupid accent (bain is hispanic, not british).
Red Skull was everything the Red Skull should be. He's highly intelligent, he's loyal only to himself and hydra. He did things not because others told him but because he was a leader. He does what he does because he is evil incarnate. He didn't want to level one city to appease his boss's brat kid, he wanted to conquer the world because he believed it was his destiny to become greater than mankind.
haltopen12 Yeah fair point except bane was still a powerful presence that did what his character was supposed to do, challenge batman physically and mentally. He broke batman and forced him to go through another series of trial in order to redeem himself. Red Skull especially on screen is a fucking generic as a super-villain can possibly get. Yes that's how he his in the comics, so that's just inherently what he is: a bad guy who is evil for the sake of being evil. Just because bane was slightly adapted differently does not mean he lost the essence of his character. Bane is still highly intelligent, in charge of a small army, manipulates others to do his bidding, physically imposing, and plans ten steps ahead of his enemies.
Sure the talia al ghul shit was somewhat unnecessary but there is no denying the sheer intimidating force of bane and what he accomplished on film. I think the fact that bane remains an enduring character years after the film was released speaks volumes to how it was portrayed while the red skull remains forgettable.
I think I am more upset about the fact that they did not recognize Bane as a good villain. He was in fact a very good villain. When you first see him you honestly do not expect him to be how he is which gives a nice breath of fresh air because of the recent villains that have been in certain films recently. Also, sir did not mention the other villains that I had talked about. Redskull and Loki are not at all very good nor are they creative and that sort of irritated me that they said they wer
i agree i thurelly enjoyed this film
Well said sir. Well said.
Thanks for that...I'll keep that in mind
I found Candy fun and charismatic. I don't know what Movie He is talking about. Candy is amusing and fun to watch.
Truely an amazing movie
Wow as well
I'd like to see a politician shoot-'em-up movie :D
Agh...might have to try and sneak my way into this one...
"This is one hell of a good movie" Agreed.
Tarantino made up the whole part about getting slaves to fight each other Bob.
Wait, what was the scene where he had his back to the camera? =S I don't recall anything like that happening.
omg great thing of a review =)
Because even bad movies can have great villains
Holy fuck! This movie was awesome; an actually smart thrill-ride!
Who's the hooded bad guy above the Joker at 3:08?
Jamie Fox is one of those actors who, while certainly not a bad performer, was never the kind of guy whose movies I'd rush out to see.
After this movie however, I may need to re-think that policy.
@MrTARDISreviews"Wait, what was the scene where he had his back to the camera? =S I don't recall anything like that happening." It was a pivotal scene where a brutal flashback appears before The German Dentist/bounty hunter makes an equally brutal decision regarding Candy. Any further info would prompt a "SPOILER WARNING" from me.
Its called copyright claims, they probably got a few false ones and hid the video so they didn't have to take it down permanently.
I still don't get his hatred of the last Batman movie. I thought it was damn good, and Bane was a pretty badass villain. I understand people might not like it, but people seem to treat it like it's fucking Batman and Robin or something.
He didn't hate it, in fact if you actually watched/listened to the review you would know that he said he liked it, its just he was disappointed by the result and that it should've been better.
+ModelOmega Which he then contradicts later when he groups the film as one of the "worst Superhero films of the past few years" alongside Green Lantern and Fantastic Four, which is stupid, as whenever or not you like Dark Knight Rises you have to admit it doesn't deserve that.
People can change their minds over reflection, how about that.Junglehero127
ModelOmega I know that. I was just pointing out that your statement is now false.
Junglehero127
And that statement was BEFORE all those remarks from Bob were said, genius.
Characters should not be dragged down by the movies they are in.
I know i spelled were wrong i ran out of characters
After seeing this move I am convinced that Quentin Tarantino has hatred for male genitals.
Wait... what was the Dr's revelation?
Such as breaking into my home and robbing me blind three times.
bad movie does not equal bad villian in the same way good movie does not mean good villian.
Wait what?! You kept the villain from Twilight, but got rid of Bane?!
As a person who saw the film...Sheen was fucking awesome and was the only good character out of the entire Twilight cast. He steals the show...and I hate Twilight :p. Bane however doesn't really have that sort of vibe. He does the thing he was known for in the comics and basically turns into generic smart villain number 75000
Was... was that the Twilight villain in the "great bad guys" shot?
PsyrenXY Looks like it. I haven't seen Twilight, so I can't say whether he's a great bad guy or not, but it seems an unusual choice amongst those other villains.
+IOwnTheSpire Michael Sheen is a pretty great actor. I haven't seen the Twilight movies but I wouldn't be surprised if Sheen elevated the material. He tends to do that.
That mumbles part was fucking funny, but why the hell is that punk ass from Twilight in there. Nothing Great about those movies except for how shitty they are.
***** Yeah true. I'll admit the scene were Bella turns is thing of beauty.
Must....see...this........
Alright well. After that I guess I should see this!
Main bad guy from Twilight.
such as?
@TheLOLILIKECHICKEN agree with u 100 fucking percent. finally a voice of reason!
give us an explanation for why the twilight guy was better than bane
i thought the original sin of america was the treatment of the natives?
Bane ha ha
In all fairness that guy was hilarious but I don't agree with his thoughts on Bane either.
Then why did you watch the review?
So in terms of great villains you think that the red faced fuck from captain america, in addition to the dude from twilight were both superior to Bane? I think we are owed an explanation....
Gets rid of bane. Keeps Loki, Redskull, and the guy from twilight... DAFUQ BRO
I thought this was the least human of Tarantino's films since.....I guess Death Proof, but with fewer genuine emotions outside of people screaming in pain. It was a competently directed film (of course), but never seemed honest to the subject of slavery in any way and its overly stylized nature only detracted from the impact of certain scenes rendering them ineffectual (at least for me). Tarantino is a great director, but I expect far more from him than what Django brings to the plantation.
Nay. That whould be depressive. How about a remake of Django :D?
just go watch your little ponies
Redskull and Loki were rather farfetched characters to me. Red Skull was seemingly dealing with both magic and advanced technology (for the 1940's) and his existence did not make much sense, he just seemed like he was there. As for Loki... Well I guess I really just hated the Thor move and when he was in the Avengers, he seemed like he was such a random villain who could do everything because he was a God and yet he some how manages to get apprehended. It's rather pathetic.
Dude go see Breaking Dawn part 2. That guy (Michael Sheen) who plays the bad vampire honestly does not give two flying fucks about the role he is playing. He knows he is in a crappy Twilight movie. Because of that he plays the character in the most flamboyantly gay way imaginable. He was literally the only good thing to come out of the Twilight movies.
Not to mention the underdeveloped, shallow and laughably cartoonish Red Skull.
Best Tarantino movie next to Pulp Fiction.
Ok so loki, Red Skull and the guy from Twilight he considers "great viilians" but not Bane....yeah this guy is not that good at his job
i like "escape to the movies"?
I'm for this comment!
now we just need a film to show the evils committed to the native americans
The movie was a very good movie, until the end action stuff started at Candy Land. Once that happened, the movie turned so stunningly bad, it ruined the entirely of the movie, leaving a good thing drenched in shit.
bane wasnt suppose to be a genius. he was all brawn and no brain from what i remember
ZARTANIA MUTHA FUCKAS!!!
screw you movie bob...bane was a excellent character and villian!
The majority of this movie is very good, and everything you say is true, but the ending is so insanely and epically moronic (starting with the gunfight at Candy land) it turns the entire movie into a steaming pile of manure.
