      While I don't think the "surprise" in Iron Man 3 is revolutionary or anything (Bob kinda makes it seem that way), I did find it funny as hell. It kinda makes sense (in a depressing sorta way) and you know, it kinda *works* in this Iron Man cinematic universe we've enjoyed so far. It's something we all should've expected; Iron Man was never about playing it safe with its villains.

    Ben Kingsley's talent was wasted and, although I haven't read the comics, I can understand why comic fans are upset about how the movie handled The Mandrin. It's like if they pulled it with Lex Luthor or The Joker.

    I love how this movie made all his suits kind of an addiction allegory, even if only partially and not completely. And that they made the whole section in the middle where’s he’s forced to go without them kind of like going cold turkey.
    It’s a nice way of showing Tony’s addictive coping mechanisms, especially since they couldn’t really do Demon In A Bottle.

    So...weird, out-there theory: What if the "real" MCU Mandarin turns out to be an Iron FIST villain? Hear me out. In the short "All Hail the King" it turns out all that cute "ten rings" BS from the first Iron Man movie wasn't just talk. There really is a Mandarin, and he really does have an army of fanatics willing to die for him. That sounds an awful lot like it could tie in with whatever group Madame Zhao (from the Daredevil season on Netflix) is a part of. Remember that in the comics, the Mandarin's rings are alien tech, and it's pretty heavily implied that Madame Zhao is some kind of alien, or whatever kind of extradimensional being Thor is. What if the Mandarin is the central villain the Defenders (Iron Fist, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Drew, going by Netflix) end up having to face down? HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE?

      That is a pretty nifty idea. For me, I thought it would have been awesome if at the end of the movie, instead of getting that cheesy end credit scene we got this:
      We see Trevor (Ben Kingsly) being led into a holding cell. As the guard leaves he asks for something to drink. The guard laughs and walks away. We then see "Trevor" sit on the bed as ten rings appear on his hand. A voice speaks words we cannot understand. The Mandarin speaks back saying that the plan went well. "In the real life game of chess, the king is not always the true leader. It is better to test one's foe and see where they are weak and where they are strong. You believe that the battle is won, Mr. Stark," the guard returns with a soda, a glazed look in his eyes, "but the war is just yet to begin."

    At first, when I saw the twist, I did laugh. It was pulled off really well. But then the consequences of that twist settled in on my mind and I immediately became disappointed. The comic book fan in me felt insulted and the movie fan in me that so desperately wanted to see that fight felt betrayed. It's as if you're watching Rocky 3, and at the end of Act 2, after Rocky's gotten the Eye of the Tiger, he finds out Clubber Lang was actually just... Mr. T. Post-90s Mr. T.

  • @syafiqjabar
    @syafiqjabar 11 лет назад

    Stark did not quit, in fact he said it himself "I am Iron Man". His trauma made him obsessed with his suits and cannot function without them. When forced to not use his suits, he remembers that he is intelligent and resourceful and that he can do great things without them. He can still be a superhero, but if he builds a new suit it will be one out of his passion and intellect, not a crippling mental issues that almost ruined him.

  • @JohnnyKidder
    @JohnnyKidder 11 лет назад

    Exactly the first two movies are all about how a genius Tony and his dad are for inventing the arc reactors, and how it enables the suit to have so much power. In the second movie he upgrades the arc reactor to be safe and be even more powerful, and in this movie nobody bothered to come up with a line explaining why his chest reactor can't power the suit at some point. If they wanted him to get out of the suit in that part of the movie they should have given it more thought

  • @MAnnaconduit1
    @MAnnaconduit1 11 лет назад

    well because some fans will say it's because he has shrapnel shards in his chest and the arc reactor keeps them from reaching his heart, and that the suits have individual reactors to power them, I would give this credit if not for the fact that in the first movie he only has one, one to power his suit and to keep the shrapnel at bay, another thing that says their excuse is crap is that Obadiah Stain takes it to power his suit, apparently it is the only power source for it.

    IMO this movie receives a lot of undeserved hate, specially due to the Mandarin twist which I found to be a pretty good meta-commentary about the racist and xenophobic origins of the character and the governments' need of creating enemies to function as scapegoats.

    • @voiceofreason467
      @voiceofreason467 8 лет назад +4

      Except the entire movie is about as inventive as saying, turning into Bozo the Party Clown at Billie's 3rd birthday. It's a disgrace to the comics, its a disgrace to the fans, its a disgrace to the actors who played it and its a disgrace to the writers who thought this would be clever.

    • @MachineFuckingHate
      @MachineFuckingHate 8 лет назад +5

      "this movie receives a lot of undeserved hate"
      If movie receives a lot of hate, it means that there are some problems with it.
      "good meta-commentary about the racist and xenophobic origins of the character"
      Of course not. I guess you don't know anything about the Mandarin from the comics and you just assumed this because that's what Bob said, and he's definitely not an authority when it comes to the Mandarin, since he admitted that he never read any comic book with him.
      First of all, I guess you have missed the fundamental point from the comics about the Mandarin that make your fun "theory" fall in deaf ears... Mandarin, despite being a man of specific ethnicity, never was a personification of xenophobia or enmity towards other nations. Mandarin was an emblematic exemplification about ideology of rational individuality and individual anarchism.
      Mandarin is a manipulative genius that uses different methods and schemes to achieve his ultimate goals. Deep down he has a mentality of a insurrectionist who wants to subjugate the world and then re-conceptualize it under his own paradigm.
      His character was never about inserting fears about orientals. He is all about accumulation of power and authority.
      In short, in comics, Mandarin was a sophisticated character with grand ideals and clear motives. In this mediocre movie he's a spurious, faceless frontage for someone else's agendas. Those are the differences. There was nothing "meta" in this movie, since it was pretty superficial and trivial.

    Fans will be fans, but I think you will find that a lot of people more critical about films love Iron Man 3 because it is deeper than your average action movie, heavy with symbolism and thematic elements that actually build upon the subtext from the first two films and Avengers. It isn't just about action figures fighting each other, but it's a movie about the hand holding those figures. It helps that the cast are all amazing actors too, and Black is legendary writer among film critics.

    It is possible that Extremis made his surgery finally possible after Stark fixed the formula. It is just as likely that he has been psychologically attached to it the whole time. Anyway, building all those armors was the reason his relationship with his friends suffered, and they weren't up to the standards of his pre-Avengers suits anyway. If he builds anything after this it's because he really needs it and not because of his mental condition.

    I thought the film was really bloody awesome... right up to the big mandarin twist. Everything from there just sort of fell apart for me. Sure it was funny, but I felt that they threw away what could have been a particularly interesting story for the sake of a few gags, and ultimately it (to me at least) wasn't worth it.

    about the power source. if you watched all three you would know stark was attacked by a bomb at the start of the first movie. he needed it to prevent the metal pieces left in his body from getting into his heart, because the technology at the time couldn't get them out. and at the end of this one, you can see they had the technology to do it. (the doctor took out a piece of metal from stark's body and it was attracted by something like a magnet on the top).

    I don't read a lot of comics, but I assume it's sort of the same as when they make a book you love into a movie with the same overarching goal but a bunch of different things that don't happen in source material.
    It's really not to bad. As long as it stands on it's on as a movie, I don't think it should matter to much how much it differs from the book (Or comic book)
    I thought the movie stood on it's own pretty well.

    How many of you people actually realise that Joss Whedon actually emulated the style of Shane Black. The type of characters and dialogues Whedon writes from Speed to Avengers were based on Black's style in movies like Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout. Even now, some think that Whedon is the lesser of the two especially if you compare their cinematic directorial debuts.

    Remember, Ant-Man will be a movie. No amount of science will explain Pym's shrinking powers. Or The Hulk's size change, for that matter. We are talking about films that are very faithful to comics where 50% of the explanation to anything is "unstable molecules" and that is the most amount of science you get before Wolverine plays poker with Captain Marvel and a space warrior or Deadpool addresses Rob Liefeld about his whole pouch thing.

  • @chillthere

    and batman is definitely more in depth because nolan focused on discussing the struggle of the superhero instead of almost entirely showing off the graphics like iron man. you can't say which one is better, they are aimed for different audiences, it really depends on what you are looking for in a movie.

    Never mind my previous comment (if you saw it) it's because it "powers his heart" (NOT in a romantic way) so using it as power would bring him just about dead. Especially if he is about to die in the first place.

  • @stenzel27
    @stenzel27 11 лет назад

    What you're saying is true, but in the first two movies it wsn't distracting at all. In this one I found myself thinking things like "Are there miniature ark reactors in EVERY suit? Where is the rocket fuel stored for each individual piece of armor that he summons 800 miles to assemble into one suit and what powers each individual piece if the ark reactor is not connected? How much time has passed that he's had time and money to build all of this?" In this movie, it's distracting.

  • @icemanlj2k7
    @icemanlj2k7 11 лет назад

    Don't really wanna defend this movie...coz I don't like it but I think it's because the Mark 42 was powered mostly by JARVIS. JARVIS was the one propelling the suit whenever Tony called it. And I think it shut down because Tony was battered and bruised so he wasn't focused, then JARVIS shut down, turning the suit off with it

  • @syafiqjabar
    @syafiqjabar 11 лет назад

    There's a power source in every suit, of course. Just like Rhodey's suit, and Vanko's suit. Or any of Hammer's drone armor. There's probably a mini power source in every piece of the new suit too. That question about rocket fuel can be asked in the first film. How much time? That's related to Stark's obsession with his suits and his insomnia (also he has robots that help him). How much money? Tony Stark is one of the world's richest man. It's all comic book logic, even more so post Avengers.

    I didn't think it was bad. Maybe better than Iron Man 2, but not as fun as Iron Man 1. The twist idk...it was okay but I called it early on. I guess it's original for an Iron Man/Avengers movie, but for any other movie, we've seen it done many times before. It was just okay and I got tired of the whole partial suit thing. Overall Okay, Not Deserving Of All The Hate, Not Deserving Of Too Much Love Either. It Doesn't Have The Standout Beginning Of 1, Or The Great Ending Of 2, But The Film Overall Is More Serviceable Than 1's Third Act, Or The Middle of 2. The Film Might Mesh With Some People, But Not With Others.

      "just imagine a batman movie where the joker gets that kind of treatment"
      Imagine thinking the Joker and the Mandarin are comparable villains. Iron Man is not Batman. He has a very, very shitty rogues gallery, mostly due to him being the Red Scare anti-communist propaganda comic during the 70s, alongside the retconned US agent version of cap. Mandarin has no larger pop culture significance, and using his mantle as a twist is not a betrayal because no one gives a fuck about him. And using that twist to enrich the films themes about how the Military Industrial Complex fearmongers terrorism for profit? That's the smart thing to do, because it actively makes the film better, and ties in to its central character conflict of Tony's fear driving his actions and making him act irrationally.

    My issues with Ironman 3 were the fact that it's a Christmas movie, the scenes with the kid were annoying, they shit all over the extremis story, Pepper ends up being more badass than the main protagonist, the final boss fight was lacking camera time, "I'm going to kill the President" cliche, the suits fell apart on impact with anything (even stationary objects), Iron Patriot (not warmachine), and the Mandarin being a little bitch.

    Stark ended the movie better than Bruce did. Stark escaped from his basement and his fantasy into reality and adulthood. Bruce escaped from his basement and his toys into another man's fantasy (Alfred's). Being Batman was a mental problem for him and he could've probably fixed Gotham better if he ran his company properly. Not that TDKR is bad, in fact it's good, but like Iron Man 3 it was good because it shows the hero having issues that needs resolving but in opposite direction.

    I disagree. Completely and utterly. The plot was lackluster and didn't make any sense, the twist was completely pointless, a lot of the dialogue was OTT and *too* cheesy, even for a superhero film, the climax was poorly shot and completely defeated the point of the last hour of the film, and it completely missed the point of what it was trying to say. I was with it, despite it's gaping plot holes, up until about halfway through when I thought "Ok, this is making no sense and it's lost what it was trying to say. Interesting premise, poor execution.

      Nothing. I understood what was happening; it just made no sense as to why it was happening. For example...why was Pepper able to fly the Iron Man suit - which was built to fit Tony Stark, and supposedly needed his heart-generator to function properly - with literally no practice? Answer: Gwyneth's ego.
      And why was he lugging the whole new suit around the frozen wasteland when he could have just activated the protocol? I mean, you would expect Tony motherfrikkin Stark to have a contingency; the entire existence of that protocol is testament to that fact, so why not add in another "Oh, I can activate it by sending a text message to a specific number, with a string of code in it." Are you telling me that Stark didn't think of/couldn't do that?
      Nothing about the plot confused me in the "I don't understand what's happening" way. It confused me in the "Ok, so I know what's happening....but *why* is it happening?" Not the worst film I've ever seen, but definitely the weakest of the three Iron Man films...so many missed opportunities, and sooooo many plotholes.

      +ninjabreadman1993r You're just STUPID! 1. When did Pepper even fly with the fucking suit? Yeah never! Oh and the suits have their own reactor, they don't need Tony's to work.
      2. The protocol couldn't be activated because all of the rubble in his mansion was covering the top of it, it wasn't until it was cleared up that he was able to use it.
      3. You didn't understand shit, you were confused because you couldn't handle simple storytelling.

      unknown unknown Well, since you asked so /nicely./
      1) I was using "fly" as an catch-all term for "pilot" or "use." She got into the "fucking suit" to save her and Tony when the building was collapsing. How did the suit fit Pepper when it was built to Tony's body specifications?
      2) What about before, when the helicopters were approaching and just after the missile hit? Are you telling me that Starks home - the place where all the suits were kept - has no early warning system or security whatsoever? And remember, he /never/ cleared away the rubble. He was taken away to the icy wasteland as a direct consequence of being attacked in his home, so he didn't get the chance to clear away the rubble and "tidy up" his home...and yet the House Party Protocol was still activated despite the rubble and the damage to his home, indicating that the state of his home above ground level has no impact on whether the Protocol could be activated.
      3) I understood the plot perfectly. I didn't say there wasn't a story or that it was confusing...just that it was a plot that didn't make much internal sense and had quite a lot of gaping plotholes. It also defeated its own point by the end.
      Bare in mind, I'm not saying you can't like it and I'm not about to insult you *for* liking it. I just personally disliked the film. Anybody who insults somebody for either disliking something they like or for liking something they dislike is evidently one of three things: A troll, an idiot or somebody who is insecure in their own opinion and just wants to put somebody else down to make their opinion feel "right."
      I disliked it and you liked it. So what? Why is that something worth insulting me over?

      1. First of all this is the biggest nitpick in the world. Second, the suit fits her because that suit is different and adapts to whoever is wearing it, it's a big thing, it's not like she's fat and wouldn't realistically fit in it.
      2. Did you not pay attention to the fucking movie? From the moment Pepper hears Tony's message on his Iron Man helmet you can see people are cleaning the rubble and you there are people around when the protocol was activated.
      3. You have yet to use any real arguments against the film, you're nitpicking details that are irrelevant to the quality of the movie.
      I don't give a shit if you dislike it, but your first comment was a statement about how "terrible" you think the movie is yet you provided reasons why you think that. If your comment was "I dislike this film a lot or I hate this movie" I wouldn't have said anything.

    Oh, good Lord. You are actually nitpicking the science in a Marvel superhero movie, a series of films that even at its most realistic is more comfortable with their origins from comic books than most superhero movies. Like, they had a WW2 film but it was less like Saving Private Ryan and more like Wolfenstein 3D.

    yes he did quit (spoilers) he destroyed the suits, he said clean slate, he couldnt handle what happened in the avengers. he got rid of the source of power that i thought he needed to live but made no explanation why he didnt needed it or how all of a sudden he can get rid of it, oh yeah like magic it just makes sense, dont think about it just go with it, no thank you im not sucker for that. there was real symbolism, the story was flat & tried to end it epically like batman but couldnt, 3 sucked.

    Apart from the Mandarin thing, though, I didn't hate it. It was better than the second movie. Most people I know agree with that but I know there are people who hate it. I can see why but I just don't. The source material is no sacred cow for me so if it's good I'll like it. These movies are only on my radar because they're big superhero movies and they're part of the Avengers franchise. I did enjoy that movie too, in spite of my dislike of Marvel's actual comics.

    Philosophical premise? Please explain. The Dark Knight series is - in my opinion - three of the greatest superhero movies of all time. And also hugely overrated for it's intelligence and the likes. A lot of the plot of the movies rely on plot contrivances that are - admittedly - well hidden, but once realised make no sense. Iron Man 3 was full of cool spectacle, great humour and brilliantly surprising plot twist, whilst still remaining simple enough to make sense under close inspection.

    so tony stark is quitter. so why have there been alot of iron man comics since back in the day? i dont buy or are into those comics but im sure him being around for along time means he's not a quitter in that universe. so he retired in 3 & if he stayed then he would be copying batman, cause there would HAVE TO come a time when a loved one dies or he would want to be aloner for there sake. so if u enjoyed a movie about a quitter or another eventual batman clone, i guess more power to you.

    It's a good movie, don't get me wrong. But, to call it better than the Dark Knight series is a great stretch of imagination. It was a decent movie but the idea that the story or even the uberly unimportant and not all that shocking twist was nothing to brag about. The whole Stark conflicted idea was great and fit into the universe really well, but the idea that this movie even competes with the philosophical premis of The Dark Knight is just ridiculous.
