    District 9 is one of my favorite movies of all time. It really has something to say about the result of socioeconomic inequality. Here is this far superior race, yet when they are subjected to oppression and segregation they start resorting to crime and the black market. This leads the citizens of South Africa to think of them as a lesser species, even though they traveled lightyears to get here! Goddam this movie has so much to say about the state of our culture...

    District 9 jumped to one of the 'best films I've ever seen' spots after I saw it. I'm so glad there's others who loved it as much as I did.

    Dude
    I remember seeing it in theaters and when I was done just thinking wow that was the most realistic take on an alien species and Men converging and the story's ending is just mind blowing
    Lol

    Halo is a hard lore to get into and may seem bland, but if you actually learn it is one of the greatest and most in depth lores out there

      all you really have to do is look at like one expanded universe thing to get into it, after that it's pretty cool

      I would have to agree, the lore in the games is pretty vapid compared to some of the books and short stories, and you'd have to do some reading before saying the franchise is without backstory.

    • @Sesekriri
      @Sesekriri 10 лет назад +1

      Yeah, and they have done a great job of keeping the games lore friendly, or even supporting the book lore

      Annalee H I think Halo 2 trumps all others in terms of an interesting adhesion to Halo's Lore. Without it's story, I highly doubt anyone would care as much about Halo a they do.

    They were a deep social commentary into the mindset of people in a stressful situation. It's not about the story it's about the people, sometimes they are more interesting. The second one in particular is effectively about how people maintain their humanity in an chaotic situation.

    Saying thank you doesn't even begin to describe how much i love this video. I saw District 9 as soon as it went into theaters and it is my favorite movie of all time. unfortunately every single person around me said they hated it. thinking it was boring. Thank you for boosting my love for this movie, and as soon as I can, Im going to watch it again

    this was like an R-rated version of the same film we've seen before, but it was done differently and I di like it quite a bit. I like how it is shot sort of off camera footage and I did enjoy that this was a movie that would not skip out on the brutal/gory details, I liked the alien dad and his son bits, there should have been more of that, I mean you know that he's going to help them out in the end, you know his opinion and views will change, the bad guy is a generic bad guy, a evil corporation never seen that before, I do like that this was based on actual events of segregation in south Africa, but I think it would have been neat to see that instead of an alien dramatization of it.

  • @Rabidchu
    @Rabidchu 9 лет назад +10

    Hold on there cowboy. I get that you don't like modern gaming (circa 2009) and halo is a relatively perfect symbol of all its pros and cons, but i do believe that it was Bob who said you can make a good movie out of anything. If a goddamn GI Joe movie can work, so could a Halo movie.

    • @Rabidchu
      @Rabidchu 9 лет назад

      ***** In Bob's own words, it did. Personally, I thought GI Joe was garbage. Also, this was six years ago so his opinion has probably evolved into something more rabid and instinctual. CAN a good Halo movie be made? Of course. Has one been made? Not even close, but enough people have grown up with the series that maybe one young blood with talent can turn it into something great.

    • @Rabidchu
      @Rabidchu 9 лет назад

      ***** Was that supposed to be a joke or something? If not, what does your ethnicity have to do with anything?

    • @damiencross5110
      @damiencross5110 9 лет назад

      +Rabidchu Yea but you'd have to actually give the fuckin thing some depth. They'd have to take the Halo theme and make their own movie. Halo doesn't even have a story set up that would work in a movie. The filmmakers would have to do everything themselves.

    • @Rabidchu
      @Rabidchu 9 лет назад

      Damien Cross You say it like "doing everything yourself" is a bad thing. If they went that route, it might be even better. However, on the off chance that you're merely being facetious and making a point that the game has almost nothing narrative to contribute, I wholeheartedly disagree. The games dialog is almost completely composed of exposition for world-building's sake and that is useful for a movie. What the filmmakers would really need to double down on would be the characters and their interaction.

    • @damiencross5110
      @damiencross5110 9 лет назад

      Rabidchu It's not a bad thing, but in the end, would it resemble Halo? The filmmakers might use the same names and same space suits, but I don't think the game gives filmmakers enough to work with. They'd either get stuck trying to make a movie that resembled to the games or would go off and do their own thing.
      I only see the latter working out. More often than not when filmmakers have stuck to the narratives given in games, their movies fail. If someone wanted to do a badass sic fi film, he/she should probably stay away from calling it Halo, because trying to mold a movie around that game's narrative would probably make for a bad movie. A really bad movie. A really really really bad movie. Like Street Fighter or Mario Bros status.
      Look at game-based movies that were successful to see that they deviated enormously from the game they were portraying. Resident Evil is a prime example. I think trying to stick to Halo would give us something similar to Star Ship Troopers without the cheese factor and caricature, essentially a snooze fest with too much CGI and characters you forget as soon as you leave the theater.

    Funnily enough, the current state of the Halo Universe is very similar to what he says District 9 is in. An uneasy ceasefire with corporations up to their usual dickery and interspecies relationships tense enough for violence to be a major problem.

    people have compared this to pocahontas for it's message, but to me, district 9 doesn't save it for the end, it's not like that were building up the message as if it's never been done before, and for that matter district 9, to me, puts characters and plot before message, it's not like they made the movie just to get this message across

    I would have to disagree; it had an obvious cliff hanger ending, the majority of the aliens were retarded, and the super weapons only showed up for about 15 minutes out of the 2 hour movie. I would say it's best point is how real the characters and corporation act during the film, but I'd still only rate it 7/10.

    While I will agree, if the Halo movie was made, it would have been bad, I just don't get the hate for the series in this review. Yahtzee's review of Halo 3 was completely understandable, and he said it was decent not garbage. It's like this guy played The Library or Cortana, and then called it a day.
    Lastly, the storyline is amazing for Halo. I don't know any other FPS that spans 100,000 Yr.

    of an alien father and his son, which really to me was and should have been the main focus of the film, these two dealing with all the crap humans are pushing on them, just trying to get home, second when the guy turns I was thinking oh obviously he will side with them and yes, but they should have shown how he has become or if he becomes part of the alien culture, nope though movie's finished for now, there are so many ways this could have pushed the norm, and boundaries of how we view...

    now while that sounds absolutely prefect, it is done in a very cliché and unsurprising way, while one might assume brigning all these elements together is epic, it is, but it lacks the intrigue that could have made this movie more then just an overused message, one is no way would humanity give up on these aliens, if not in south Africa then in the global community, that is not how we think operate, nor would we allows a private company to manage aliens on their own, they explored the aspect...

    Not Pocahontas with Aliens (you want that, go watch Avatar, *rimshot*)
    This movie does a damn good job at shaming the human condition while ironically making the parallel of Humans being some of the most disgusting, greedy, evil, prejudice beings fathomable (cuz people expect big bad aliens to act like that, never us) and it does it WELL.
    I felt embarrassed for my species after watching this, because this movie had the balls to tell people how humans act if put in a position of dominance.

    Whether you enjoy Halo or not, it would actually be easy to adapt to the screen. First person shooters tend to be a lot of running and gunning, so it would be easier to compress than other genres. I'll admit the story isn't exactly groundbreaking, but again, seems like an easy one to adapt to the screen, just develop the characters more. I enjoy Halo, but I can see it's not the greatest thing ever, I just don't see why it gets so much hate.

    Why does everybody shit on Halo... It is actually a pretty FUCKING good game with an excellent and immersive story and universe and has a pretty strong "cult" following and they sure as hell put a lot more effort into the series than they did on District 9 (which albeit is a pretty damn good movie too) I just don't think it has done enough wrong to deserve that kind of narrow view it is given. It doesn't have the constant failures of CoD(which is also a good gaming franchise) thats for sure.

    alien movies, instead the aliens get revamped into an obviously metaphor for the aged old plot line, humanity is a bunch of racist dicks, the same thing that has been hammered into us, especially with the alien aspect in avatar, and while I consider this film better and more character/plot developed then avatar, it still fails on the same message level. we get it, how about exploring why we act like that, instead of just showing how we do it, that would be something huh? to actually explore why.

    to recap this movie is okay but it's not the masterpiece it is claimed to be, once again something that is slightly different and re-hashed in a new way, has caught us so off guard that it get's overhyped and is regarded as deep and meaning something, well yes obviously the message is very simple, of course it turns into a commentary on racial issues and prejudice throwing in everything for the whole family; aliens, giant mechs, alien weapons, intense action scenes, gore, and social intrigue...

When I watch an alien movie, I kind of expect to see something alien related, NOT aliens being put on a leash by governments and minorities being mistreated, like EVERYTHING I SEE ON ANY NEWS channel and ANY TIME, minus the aliens. When the movie ended, I was surprised and disappointed, because 5 minutes before the ending I thought-FINALLY the movie is getting to the good parts!

    Okay, i'm sorry but WTF? Intelligient? what part of this movie is intelligient? It's a splicing of other movies/TV series (seriously i can go through almost every part of that movie and tell you who their ripping from) and the storyline is the standard "who's the savage?" plotline. That plotline has been done to death even before the 90's. It's a popcorn flick at best but to say it's an intelligient movie is total tripe.
