Personally I think the whole reason why pirates of the caribbean actually worked out so amazingly as it did is because of Johnny Depp's weird take on how a pirate is supposed to be and look like. It took the movie from being a regular pirate movie we've seen a million times to something new and interesting.
Ironically entire cast and crew at the set laughed their ass off looking at his take on Jack Sparrow as weird and embarrassing. There was this one producer who trusted in Johnny Depp and let him do it his style
bar10dr You're right......unfortunately, Depp has gone as psycho-nuts as Michael Jackson and is now eclipsing MJ's insanity by a long shot(without the child molesting thing- thank God!).

Taken is a good lesson for writers: if a simple story isn't compelling (just a father, his daughter, and some bad guys), then complex plots and dazzling special effects won't make the film a success.
In my film class my professor said there really two types of movies that work and will make money, it's either a complex plot complex situations with simple character involved or a really complex character in a simple story. Taken is the later, put a complex guy, a dad with a secretive past, a complex CIA background , in a simple situation a simple plot, save your daughter, and beat everyone up, and it will work, and yes John wick is similar John had a complicated past who was his wife, how many people had he killed, and now he has a simple quest kill those who killed his dog
All my friends were convinced Guardians of the Galaxy was going to be a lame movie, those same friends thought Batman v. Superman was going to be amazing. It was the most satisfying, "I told you so" ever.

tbf gotg is not that good of a film in the marvel lore because the high standards marvel already set. but... marvel always being on point when they choose actors and build up almost every character for their universe... they even build quite strong personality character with a very little time such as thanos who only have this one significant movie to show how much important of a villain he is. all we've ever heard about thanos before the movie are just one little sneak peak from the avengers 1 movie and few mentions in the other movie. Back to gotg, gotg 2 are literally one of the best movie from this universe for me, behind civil war and ragnarok... the character they already build makes me really into this movie and gotg 2 significantly increase the quality of the storyline... yondu death are totally heartwrenching that my girl friend crying for so long lol he even say that all the romance movie he ever cried for are nothing compared to this

Speed. I was a kid in a mall when a marketing guy stopped me to show off the poster and asked if I would want to see the movie. I said, the Bill and Ted guy as an action hero driving a bus with a bomb? That sounds dumb.
The film “MASH“ Was totally made in the editing room. Actor Donald Sutherland was convinced it was a horrible movie and it could never succeed. But director Robert Altman and editor Danford Greene transformed the scrapheap into a work of art.
I'd put Zootopia up there too. It was released in early March, when Disney apparently thought no one would care about it, all while waiting for Moana to come out around Oscar season so it could be a smash hit. And guess which one of those ended up grossing a billion dollars at the box office?
Now I know why he made fun of Sylvester Stallone when Arnold Schwarzenegger was interviewed on Jimmy Kimmel. He told Jimmy Kimmel that when he was first starting out in his career as an actor that he was offered to do some crappy movie, Scorpion he tricked Stallone into doing the movie telling him it was a great movie but he was too busy at the time. Stallon ending up doing the movie but it didn't do well.
What about Jaws? Everyone working on it was convinced it was terrible and would end their careers, and Spielberg thought he'd never be allowed to direct another movie.
I remember in a post-Avengers world, everyone is having that Marvel fever. I was at a gathering with my friends and family and the trailer for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' popped up on the telly. My cousins and friends kinda cheered but I was unsatisfied and I remarked that it would be a mistake -- I was certain it would be Marvel's first flop. Now, it's safe to say that both of theirs films are my favorite in the MCU. Also, it wasn't Star-Lord's fault.
Marvel had a flop long before that. The Incredible Hulk was a complete failure. It bombed at the box office. It only made 263 million worldwide on a budget of 150 million.
timothyfloogle... which is why I said "it kind of did." By the way, are you seeing Wesley Snipes' career take off the way Rdj's did? He's been out for a while, now.
Arnold was also reluctant to act in the film, because he had to play the bad guy, which usually would end up being a typecasting dead end for actor's career. He wanted to play the Kyle Reese role if I recall correctly. So James Cameron had to do some convincing. He also hated the "'I'll be back" scene, because he thought it was goofy, and he didn't like how it sounded preferring "I will be back." instead. Glad he listened.
Christopher McDonald I’m pretty sure that’s what he said in his Total Recall book. He didn’t want to get type casted as the bad guy going in the future. Arnold said he wanted to be a movie star, and playing a bad usually was a dead end. So he was really cautious because of this. He was getting offered to play the muscle, the bad guy, but he wanted main, lead character roles, or at least portray the good guy. Terminator on paper was opposite to that. But funny thing what happened was that he started giving Cameron tips. Arnold was in the military and his weightlifting career, aspirations to achieve success by any means necessary made himself into a bit of a machine, so he could really empathize with this robot character. How everything should be done automatic. Like assembling and de-assembling a gun, I think he gave an example. How it’s a killing machine. So I think that part turned him over, he thought he could do a really good job playing that. There was obviously more to this but I can’t remember it all. I’ve read the book some years ago, but that’s what I remember him saying.
Why do people keep saying “Marvel’s First Flop”? They already had a flop. The Incredible Hulk was a box office BOMB. It made only 263 million worldwide on a budget of 150 million. Complete failure of a film. Not to mention the first Captain America didn’t even make 375 million. Not a flop but not really a big success either.
I get why they chose Guardians. They were way more unknown when the movie came out than Iron Man was for his. Iron Man was C list, but most Marvel readers knew him. Even Marvel readers barely knew GofG. They only had a few short title runs in the years prior. Usually as part of a larger event.
Taken also took me by surprise. I had always associated Liam Neeson with Rob Roy since that was the first I movie I saw him in. Now, whenever I see Liam Neeson, I automatically think of Taken.
@@laustcawz2089 Yeah, I saw darkman when I was a kid and I thought back then that it was just a generic super hero movie just like the others at that time. Re watching it years later and I could see Liam's action star potential, it took a couple of years and a single movie to totally bring it out.
@@deception1845 I never saw it as generic & I don't know what other superhero movies you mean. If you mean "Batman", well, I was underwhelmed, though "Batman Returns" was a little better. It's a matter of quality, even though these were movies with unfamiliar or downright unknown characters, the expertise with which they were written, acted and directed outshines perceived mundanity.
Missing The Godfather in this list, even Coppola and Pacino where afraid of being fired, and Paramount cutted the budget and even reduced de filming days to a minimum xD

Monkey.D Anis no not really. Have you ever seen blackbirds ghost? Peter Ustinov is playing a very nice but drunk pirate who does selfish things but in the end comes through doing the right thing.
Pirates of the Caribbean was going to be a flop? bollocks...a film is going to be a flop when you hire actors who charge over $10m a film? and the film is over $100m? .......I dont know why they are saying this but that film wasn't made to be anything but a big hit.
Just imagine how many great movies we didn't get because of peoples personal opinions. If they got these so wrong, there are a lot more they did get wrong that didn't get the chance to see the light of day.
George Lucas never did understand Star Wars...which is why he sold the franchise to Disney, who trashed his whole life's work. Not only did he lose millions in his bet with Spielberg, but Lucasfilm ended up in the hands of Kathleen Kennedy, a Spielberg protégé, who has intentionally obliterated the Star Wars universe. The biggest shame in Hollywood history.
My opinions on these movies: Terminator: I love this movie, and I'm kinda surprised that both Schwarzenegger and his agent thought it would flop. Well, Schwarzenegger still gave a terrifying performance, and being able to put in effort when you don't care about your work is a talent. The Full Monty: I haven't seen the entirety of this movie, but what I have seen made it look like a good movie. It: since Skarsgård was so worried about something going wrong I'm glad this movie was a success. Pirates of the Caribbean: I've heard that Michael Eisner didn't believe in this movie, and I don't care 'cause he didn't always have the best judgement during his career. I am however kinda surprised that some cast members didn't believe it'd be good. Again, like with Terminator, you can't tell from their performances. Guardians of the Galaxy: I can understand the worry here. There was a sense that this movie would just be TOO weird to work. However, while I understand the worry, I myself wasn't worried. As long as everyone involved committed to it, and went all out I thought it was going to work. And they did. And it did. Taken: Yes it's simple. Sometimes simple works. Sometimes simple is what people want. Animal House: Sutherland at least tried here. I can not say the same thing about another movie he starred in but didn't really care about: Buffy the Vampire Slayer(no, not the TV series everyone knows. The movie that most people who know it try to forget). Star Wars: No one expected this movie to EXPLODE the way it did, nor that it would spawn a franchise this effin' huge
1. "The Terminator": "Oil be back many times in the future." 2. "The Full Monty": "Why should only buff men be objectified by women?" 3. "It": "You will all FLOAT, straight into box office history!" 4. "Pirates of the Caribbean": "Everyone will have 'Capt. Jack Sparrow' on their lips!" 5. "Guardians of the Galaxy": "A trash-talking Raccoon!? Are you joking?" 6. "Taken": "Movies about a kidnapping aren't even on the radar." 7. "Animal House": "College fraternity movies aren't funny." 8. "Star Wars": "Knights in outer space!? That's not even a concept."
On "Star Wars," most of the cast thought it was going to bomb. Alec Guinness was saying things like, "This isn't all that bad." One reason it only was shown onj one screen per city is because Lucas thought sci-fi fans were the only one who'd be interested.
I think with that one it wasnt predicted to flop, just not be a worldwide smash like it was. With a small budget (about $4m) and lots of well known British names including its writer, it wouldve likely broke even just in the UK.
Simon Maguire No he would make movies that were supposed to be flops to get tax breaks for German studios. Read or listen to some interviews with him. He readily admits it.
Jeff Daniels thought Speed was a crummy, run of the mill action film that wouldn't do anything at the box office. Instead, it became a smash hit. I've heard interviews from a lot of actors who say they often have no clue if a film will be good or bad when released because so much of it is made in the edit. Star Wars with bad editing and cheesy 70s effects and sounds would have been awful. Instead, it's the classic it became. The prequels, with better edting, would be so much better.
Disney had so little faith in Pirates of the Carribean that Eisner sold the overseas distribution rights while the film was still in production to cover some of the filming costs. Thus, even when POC turned out to be a hit, Disney got very little of it.
"Liam Neeson was known mostly for serious dramatic pieces, and a Star Wars film." Ahem. Krull High Spirits Love Actually Darkman Rob Roy Next of Kin Excalibur The prosecution rests.
I think a lot of these movies were good because of the actors themselves If we didn’t have those specific actors and the way they portrayed their charters the movies wouldn’t have been so memerable
the first Pirates was effing amazing. the sequels were good but didn't compare to the first. it's very lame though to hear actors say how "fucking crap" the movie that's paying them and that they accepted to work on

Ask a film editor or watch All That Jazz. Timing of cuts as well as ordering of shots can make all the difference in the world.
I'd put Zootopia up there too. It was released in early March, when Disney apparently thought no one would care about it, all while waiting for Moana to come out around Oscar season so it could be a smash hit. And guess which one of those ended up grossing a billion dollars at the box office?
It seems like I remember Titanic's production cost kept going up and up and up and no one thought it could ever recoup. Wrong!
OMG! Spielberg was a genius!
What about Jaws? Everyone working on it was convinced it was terrible and would end their careers, and Spielberg thought he'd never be allowed to direct another movie.
I didnt know he thought his movie would bomb.
star lord is our generation's han solo
Han Solo laughs at you.
maybe! iconic stars today are not the iconic stars from the 70s & 80s. they were just on a whole 'nother level.
Hell nah
MichaelNicle not even close
Han Solo is dead so gtf over it lol
Moral lesson, never bet on something you're sure is gonna fail. Loki's lurking in the corner to ensure it doesn't
Peter Frank kinda is his fault don't lie 🙄
d o r a e r i there were 14 million other possibilities .... he wouldn't have done the same thing in all of them ! Still they failed
The second isn’t good
Marvel had a flop long before that. The Incredible Hulk was a complete failure. It bombed at the box office. It only made 263 million worldwide on a budget of 150 million.
Peter Frank StarLord who? 😂😂😂
Wesley Snipes said he was advised not to take the part of Blade as it would finish his career.
394pjo it kind of did. Since he never paid the taxes on the money he made from the Blade movies, he went to jail and his career hit the toilet.
Rick Merring just because he went to prison doesn't mean his career is over. look at RDJ
timothyfloogle... which is why I said "it kind of did." By the way, are you seeing Wesley Snipes' career take off the way Rdj's did? He's been out for a while, now.
@blkpplcantberacist chinksaintsmart wah wah racist bullshit
wait Wesley Snipes had a career??
I enjoyed Full Monty so much I even went to see the stage version years later!!
"You don't make a movie with a talking tree"
Tell that to the most critically acclaimed and successful fantasy epic, Lord of the Rings.
They also had Talking Trees in the Wizard of Oz.
Yeah add on to the fact that the tree has entirely one dialogue for all his movies 🤪🤪🤪
Well chris kind of look down on how the movie will be.
@fnj9fjrjgf3 njdksnferogh
Which?
@fnj9fjrjgf3 njdksnferogh
All movies are absolute garbage?
You're a fun person.
Liam Neeson had a great career before Star Wars as well.
He'd already been the star
of an action film--"Darkman".
Don't forget The Godfather. Al Pacino and Diane Keaton were getting drunk because they thought it would bomb.
Guardians wasn't the end of his career, infinity was. HOW COULD YOU DO THAT QUILL!!
The later Star Wars prequels were supposed to be wildly successful but turned out to be flops.
I didn't believe that Guardians of the galaxy was supposed to flop its my favorite movie in the mcu
omar ayman a lot of people thought it would flop, look at where it is now
Its my least favourite
my dad wanted to take me to see Lucy over Guardians, lucky I convinced him to watch guardians and we all loved it! (:
d a n c e o f f b r o , y o u a n d m e
*oh child plays in the background*
And in an alternate universe, the challenge was accepted!
taken is one of the best movie ever made. never get bored of watching it over and over again
Terminator or Pirates worked so well because of their main actor.
Richard Dreyfuss has said that he thought "Jaws" was going to be a flop.
Where the hell is Iron Man?
wait what? i did not know that
I get why they chose Guardians. They were way more unknown when the movie came out than Iron Man was for his. Iron Man was C list, but most Marvel readers knew him. Even Marvel readers barely knew GofG. They only had a few short title runs in the years prior. Usually as part of a larger event.
guardians where not popular in the comics like iron man but the MCU thankfully makes them popular (:
No lie i thought the iron man movies were boring
I'll do one better. Who the hell is Iron Man?
That old famous saying in Hollywood “no one knows anything” is so true.
U forgot about Rocky and Iron man!!!!!!!!
Great video. Need more videos like this looper 👍
Chris Pratt made the movie good.
The problem with Pirates of the Caribbean success is it was a great movie that spawned a terrible series of follow up films.
And Johnny Depp thought that The Lone Ranger was going to be great. Maybe these people are just too close.
Looper, I looove the background music. U got ryt on that one. Dope dope music. 🙌🙌🙌🙌 love also how u match with the voice. Nice one.
Taken also took me by surprise. I had always associated Liam Neeson with Rob Roy since that was the first I movie I saw him in. Now, whenever I see Liam Neeson, I automatically think of Taken.
Check out "Darkman".
@@laustcawz2089 Yeah, I saw darkman when I was a kid and I thought back then that it was just a generic super hero movie just like the others at that time. Re watching it years later and I could see Liam's action star potential, it took a couple of years and a single movie to totally bring it out.
@@deception1845
I never saw it as generic
& I don't know what other
superhero movies you mean.
If you mean "Batman", well,
I was underwhelmed, though
"Batman Returns" was a little better.
Anyhow, I like "Taken",
but I'm even more impressed
with "Taken 2". Never got into
the "Darkman" sequels, though.
Professional actors, still give cracking committed performances, not showing the doubt!! Respect.
Taken has always been my fav!
It's a matter of quality, even though these were movies with unfamiliar or downright unknown characters, the expertise with which they were written, acted and directed outshines perceived mundanity.
"I just felt something really terrible was going to happen to me personally, or the movie"
Well it didn't happen to the movie...
Missing The Godfather in this list, even Coppola and Pacino where afraid of being fired, and Paramount cutted the budget and even reduced de filming days to a minimum xD
Yah I was told that George Lucas expected that Star Wars was going to be a flop but was surprised it did so well
Nonsense
In 1977, 20th Century Fox released 2 science fiction movies: “Star Wars” and “Damnation Alley”, Guess which one the studio thought would be the bigger hit. Here we are, 40 years later and I’ll bet most of you have never heard of “Damnation Alley”
jonny depps acting was completly new for a pirate charackter=more interesting
and the music was awesome as fuck, its like with lord of the rings, the right music in the right scenes with the right atmosphere = amazing movie
Monkey.D Anis no not really. Have you ever seen blackbirds ghost? Peter Ustinov is playing a very nice but drunk pirate who does selfish things but in the end comes through doing the right thing.
the music was often loud an repetitive in the crap sequels
Pirates of the Caribbean was going to be a flop? bollocks...a film is going to be a flop when you hire actors who charge over $10m a film? and the film is over $100m? .......I dont know why they are saying this but that film wasn't made to be anything but a big hit.
TAKEN is one of the most thrilling and satisfying movie I've ever watched.
"Taken 2" is better.
Great video and topic!
Just imagine how many great movies we didn't get because of peoples personal opinions. If they got these so wrong, there are a lot more they did get wrong that didn't get the chance to see the light of day.
Yeah those guys after being stuck in their bubble can be very clueless sometimes.
I never knew Spielberg made money off of star wars.
There’s no way in hell Kiera knightly wasn’t telling every person she’d ever met that she was making a movie with Johnny depp.
I agree with most of these, but for me I would include:
-Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
-Rise of the Planet of the Apes
-John Wick
I love Liam Neeson! That deep voice! 😍😍😍😍
Props to this video. Lot's of fun facts about people's doubts before releasing movies.
GotG was a near-universal "I told you so" to all my friends.
I was SHOCKED by how much i loved Animal House. Amazing cast, hilarious movie, and Donald Sutherland was so young and beautiful.
The Full Monty is one of my favorite movies
My opinions on these movies:
Terminator: I love this movie, and I'm kinda surprised that both Schwarzenegger and his agent thought it would flop.
Hey, I liked Liam in Excalibur also.
Krull
5:56 'Lift your chin up George, we're about to take a photo'..
'ok'
'No the other chin!'
Never bet against Steven Spielberg
Liam and tom hanks... now thats a movie i would like to see
Man, u never know. Just like how Mr. Sheffield didn’t know Cats would be a hit :3
Valenchina I just watched that episode
A Nanny reference? I AM NOT WORTHY!
What's the movie playing around 4:56
1. "The Terminator": "Oil be back many times in the future."
2. "The Full Monty": "Why should only buff men be objectified by women?"
3. "It": "You will all FLOAT, straight into box office history!"
4. "Pirates of the Caribbean": "Everyone will have 'Capt. Jack Sparrow' on their lips!"
5. "Guardians of the Galaxy": "A trash-talking Raccoon!? Are you joking?"
6. "Taken": "Movies about a kidnapping aren't even on the radar."
7. "Animal House": "College fraternity movies aren't funny."
"John, you don't call a man a tree"
Sharknado should DEFINITELY be on the list, even though it's not really a "box office" movie...(it was/is released in some theaters)
There was also Four Weddings and a Funeral, the film that launched the career of hugh grant and everyone thought it would be a flop
I think with that one it wasnt predicted to flop, just not be a worldwide smash like it was. With a small budget (about $4m) and lots of well known British names including its writer, it wouldve likely broke even just in the UK.
How could they think the Terminator was going to be a flop! It's such a classic.
You've seen the other 45 terminator movies right ? (loved one and two though).
No Movies Were Supposed To Be Flops No one in History has Ever Said "Lets Make a Flop".
Simon Maguire You must not know of Uwe Boll.
He never planed on flops, he was hoping on hits
You need to see The Producers.
Disney had so little faith in Pirates of the Carribean that Eisner sold the overseas distribution rights while the film was still in production to cover some of the filming costs. Thus, even when POC turned out to be a hit, Disney got very little of it.
"Liam Neeson was known mostly for serious dramatic pieces, and a Star Wars film."
Ahem.
Krull
High Spirits
Love Actually
Darkman
Rob Roy
Next of Kin
Excalibur
The prosecution rests.
you have to understand people not always got all the picture
I think a lot of these movies were good because of the actors themselves
If we didn’t have those specific actors and the way they portrayed their charters the movies wouldn’t have been so memerable
the first Pirates was effing amazing. the sequels were good but didn't compare to the first. it's very lame though to hear actors say how "fucking crap" the movie that's paying them and that they accepted to work on
I remember watching Star Wars in 1977 at the Cinema when I was 4yrs old with my Mum narrating the opening title...best movie in history.
"The Predator" we all thought it was going to flop... and it did.
Only in America it is actually he highest grossing movie of the predator franchise now
Just stumbled upon this video by chance & I just want to say, Sheffield never has & never will be "bleak" as you stated. Sheffield has more history & character than America combined.
As Zero Mostel said in The Producers: "Where did I go right?"
