He's kind of the "combat medic" at ring-side ... they'll stop a fight if you're gushing blood (impairing your vision or ability to defend yourself in the ring) ... so the "cut-man" can treat those injuries, anti-coagulant creams, gels (swabs of vasaline or other materials), frozen pieces of metal to reduce swelling, etc)
Sylvester Stallone proves that when given the right material he can act with the best of them. His turn as Rocky Balboa is not only the best performance of that year, but it is also one of the best performances in the history of the silver screen.
wdym "given"? he wrote this from the heart. Its the reason why he never sold the script if he is not allowed to play as Rocky, its basically a reflection of his life. Rocky's "I just want to go the distance." is Sylvester's "If Im gonna fail, I atleast want to fail on my own terms."
Best low-key moment is during the fight when they scan to the promoter, smoking his cigar, and watch his look of astonishment mixed with respect that this is an incredible fight. It’s about a two second frame and it’s really one of my favorite scenes from the movie..
Calling out "Going The Distance" instantly makes you my hero. It's the best score-to-scene in the history of cinema. "Rocky" is great but the score made it epic.
A cutman, is someone that specializes in CLOSING cuts. They are there to try to get the cut to close so the fighter can continue to fight. What they did to Rockys eye was something that some fighters did back then but that was not the norm.
I play "Going the Distance" Extended version on my phone as I walk from parking lot of my workplace to my work area. I am stunned at how many people actually recognize it and say "Rocky"!
Saw this in the theater and the crowd was cheering like it was a real fight and not scripted. When it was all over, the audience did something I've seen only a few times (like The Sting) they applauded.
Cut man - treats cuts and swelling so fighter can make it though a fight - no one now would actually cut a swelling to release blood. They use what is basically cue-tips with Adrenalin to control bleeding, and will also use a cold flat iron to reduce swellings.
A boxing cut man is like a wizard of wound management. They use a few different techniques to control bleeding during a fight: Epinephrine (adrenaline): This constricts blood vessels and slows bleeding. Aluminum chloride: A chemical that promotes clotting. Cotton swabs and gauze: To absorb blood and apply pressure to the wound. Vaseline: To prevent the wound from reopening when the fighter is punched again.
Rocky’s dog was named after Dick Butkus of the Chicago Bears….he just passed away two weeks ago…the dog was mentioned by his many acquaintance during the football player’s memorial…..
I grew up on all the Rocky movies, it’s my great pleasure to watch people fall in love with the characters for the first time. My dad took me to a few Rocky movies, and now I get to take my kids to the creed movies.
All the red white and blue at the fight, including Adrian's outfit and Creed's trunks and costume is because 1/1/1976 (the day of the fight) was the first day of our bicentennial as a country (Apollo calls it "our nation's biggest birthday" in an earlier scene). Yearlong celebration of 1776-1976.
That is correct. I was only 7 years old for most of 1976 but have memories of flags everywhere all year long in celebration. Especially on 4th of July. Back when young people were taught to be proud and appreciate our country instead of how to hate it.
Finally, someone recognizes, Going the Distance has the best goose pimples inspirational song in Rocky. Thank you for finally recognizing that.!!!! To me, recognizing Going the Distance, is someone who really gets the spirit of the Rocky movies… on an emotional, visceral and maybe spiritual level.
THAT's Lloyd Kaufman?! Hahahah you've seen this movie once, as a kid, but I've seen it about thirty times since I was a kid and had no idea. Wow, thanks for the trivia Robert!😄 I instantly spotted Kaufman the first time I watched Guardians of the Galaxy, though! So I got that going for me ..which is nice.
A cut man tends to a boxer's facial cuts in between rounds during a boxing match. Typically, the cut man needs to quickly stop any bleeding, as the referee may use their discretion to end the match if a boxer gets cut and is bleeding too much.
Stallone did such a great job with this movie. They were smart when it came to mistakes in the movie. They pointed out issues they didn’t have the budget to fix. The poster of Rocky hanging from the ceiling had the wrong shorts and they couldn’t fix it so Stallone decided to have Rocky bring up the problem and then with his boxing robe that Paulie got the ad on was too big for Rocky so they had Rocky bring it up. The series is fun to watch all the way to Creed. After the first Creed you could tell that it was no longer a Rocky movie.
and then that scene with him in the bed saying how all he wanted to do was go the distance almost wasn't even shot. The director was going to cut it because of budget worries. Stallone was adamant that it had to stay in the the director gave him 1 single shot at it. So that scene is done as a 1 take.
A more recent boxing movie I think you'll really like is Cinderella Man. It came out in 2005, and never got the popularity it deserved. Glad you watched Rocky. Good reaction 👍
Just FYI, $40.55 in 1976 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $219.35 today. Sounds better but still just chump change for the amateur boxing match for Rocky in the movie opening.
More than a sports drama and all about the heart. What it really means to go the distance. The highest grossing film of 1976. Winner of 3 Academy Awards (Best Editing, Best Director and Best Picture). Stallone was nominated twice, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor in a leading role. The budget was $1 million and the salary was not in the millions for any of the castmembers. Other than playing the character, he actually wrote the fight between Rocky vs. Apollo and was credited as 'Boxing Chorographer'. Stallone of Hell's Kitchen, N.Y. was an underdog in the film industry. Pre-Rocky; he had roles in other films, theatre and television. Worked so hard to write and create a story with characters close to his heart. Just like his Rocky, so much to prove to the industry. Btw, Stallone is Italian for Stallion, thus 'The Italian Stallion'. If your watching the sequels, get ready for quite the journey. RIP to Burt Young as Paulie. Just learned he passed away.
Oh damn.. when you said " You hit the meat, now she wants to" and your girl just gave the camera that dumbfound look.. OMG, I spat a mouthful of my breakfast out all over my shirt and lap. That absolutely hit me out of nowhere like a Balboa uppercut. 😂😂😂
Rocky Balboa is the greatest movie character of all time. You rarely get a chance to follow a character’s story for nearly 50 years. I highly recommend following the entire story Rocky 1-5, Rocky Balboa (6), and all three Creed movies. It’s an all time great story.
The short guy at 8:43-8:53 that talks to Rocky is the person who Stallone had sold his dog Butkus to in real life because Stallone was so poor he needed money for food. When Stallone finally sold his Rocky script and had money he wanted his dog back but the guy said no. The only way Stallone would get his dog back would be if he put the guy in the movie, which Stallone did.
Can't wait for you to do Rocky 2. That's my favorite. Rocky 1 and Rocky balboa tie for second. The whole series is great...except 5 but even that has its place.
I saw Rocky III over 38 times in the theater. The first two, I originally saw once each, on HBO. The mobster's driver always reminded me of Harvey Keitel. While in the Marines, Burt Young won 32 of his 34 boxing matches.
No, a cut man deals with cuts on a boxer’s face during the fight. Of course, seeing this movie before, you correlated that, with when he had to use a razor to open his shut eye…..it’s highly irregular, but yes, part of the “cut man” job, but not the reason for the name.
The actors the studio wanted to play Rocky included Robert Redford, Ryan O'Neal, Burt Reynolds, or James Caan. But Stallone's agents insisted that Stallone was cast as Rocky.
The story is based on real life boxer Chuck Wepner, Stallone befriended him and got the story out of him and never gave him credit. There is a movie based on that
yep Chuck went 15 rounds with Ali. He was paid 100k and Ali made 1.5 million. He had problems after his boxing career with drugs and prison but eventually straightened out. Other parts of the Rocky movies were based off things that Wepner did. Sadly Sly didn't acknowledge his idea for Rocky based on Wepner even though he did. A lawsuit by Wepner settled that argument.
Not really a comment on this movie but, since you mentioned doing Thanksgiving themed movies this month, I would hope that "Trains, Planes, and Automobiles" is on your to do list.
Rocky was the first video rental movie we ever saw with our new BETAMAX video player (top loading video player) I think I was about 6 or 7 at the time.
The little franchise that could. Barely any budget, most of it filmed guerrilla style, Weathers and Stallone actually laying into each other (ironically they got the opposing characters' injuries), and yet it was still an amazing character story hidden within a boxing tale. And for all the underdog showmanship, the story is about the person more than the fight, the fight is simply a vehicle for Rocky to prove that he's more than just a bum, that he has worth, and his relationship with Adrian is very wholesome as his support, in spite of Paulie's problematic nature and selfishness encroaching on the story. Also the banners with the wrong shorts for Rocky was an actual error they had to work into the story.
Sylvester Stallone was paid a small salary but given a percentage of the revenues... And He made over $5 Million on this Film... And Bill Conti was a struggling Film Composer until "Rocky" and He said that before "Rocky" He had "to go looking for work", but afterwards, "work looked for Him"...
Another interesting boxing movie you should check out is "Chuck" (2016) with Liev Schreiber playing the man who boxed against Muhammad Ali and inspired Stallone to write Rocky.
Now I’m late to your party lol 😂 because i just saw a notification about your reaction to Rocky II so i decided to watch this video first since I’m a huge fan of the Rocky franchise (i even have a soft spot for the fifth movie is a guilty pleasure of mine). I’m convinced that Bill Conti was a close second to Jerry Goldsmith who won the Oscar for Best Score for The Omen. Burgess Meredith should’ve won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor! Rocky went the distance and as result became a pop culture icon and has been ever since. Even to this day, the Rocky franchise is in my opinion the most consistent aside from Lethal Weapon since all of those movies have something of value especially within storytelling, humor, and overall entertainment. #1976 #Rocky #SylvesterStallone #TaliaShire #BurgessMeredith #CarlWeathers #BurtYoung #TonyBurton #JoeSpinell #FrankStallone #BillConti #JohnAvildsen 🥊🎥🎬🏆👏🏻

My Rocky movie rankings: 1, 2, 6 (Rocky Balboa), 3, 4, 5. But all are quite entertaining.
It's the small things, he gets up and Apollo is like what the fuck
A "cut man" is the guy who tries to stop the blood when you're "cut". They can do a great job sometimes, it's amazing.
They also tape your hands before the fight. Helps protect from breaking your hands.
My favorite performance is in Creed he's still got it!!!
given?....he wrote the script
wdym "given"? he wrote this from the heart. Its the reason why he never sold the script if he is not allowed to play as Rocky, its basically a reflection of his life.
Rocky's "I just want to go the distance." is Sylvester's "If Im gonna fail, I atleast want to fail on my own terms."
I agree. Sadly, just about every film he made after, is garbage. He could have been a new generation’s Brando.
He’s a world class actor dude, always has been
Best low-key moment is during the fight when they scan to the promoter, smoking his cigar, and watch his look of astonishment mixed with respect that this is an incredible fight. It’s about a two second frame and it’s really one of my favorite scenes from the movie..

go to song to finish a run or workout.
ikr? Gonna Fly Now always gets the attention, but Going the Distance represents the struggle, pain and getting back up.
@@wasabi5338Totally agree 💯!
after the movies the Turtles stayed with the pet shop owner until the shop closed up, his son contacted Sly to get the turtles to him.
If they'd gone at Adrian's pace, they'd have both been drawing their pensions by the time they got round to kissing.
Chuck Taylors have stayed nearly the same for approaching 100 years soon.
A cutman, is someone that specializes in CLOSING cuts. They are there to try to get the cut to close so the fighter can continue to fight. What they did to Rockys eye was something that some fighters did back then but that was not the norm.
One of the all time great classic movies
I play "Going the Distance" Extended version on my phone as I walk from parking lot of my workplace to my work area. I am stunned at how many people actually recognize it and say "Rocky"!
Saw this in the theater and the crowd was cheering like it was a real fight and not scripted. When it was all over, the audience did something I've seen only a few times (like The Sting) they applauded.
Primarily a love story and a story of personal growth with boxing as the backdrop.
Bill Conti’s score is one of the keys to the emotion of this movie
The talent of Talia Shire as an actress. The shyness of Adrian compared to the ferocity of Michael Corleone's sister in the Godfather movies.
Sly actually auditioned for one of the 2 Godfather films to be an extra.
The casting director said 'he wasn't Italian enough'.
Ain't that something?
tbf Adrian became incredibly fierce in the couple of next movies lol
I grew up in Philly. In the '70s the town was REALLY going down hill. This movie helped bring the town out of the doldrums.
The part where Adrian loses her hat wasn’t scripted, someone just grabbed it off her head.
I learned more about this movie from you than watching the movie

Academy award winning movie and one of the best films of all time. Only great performances.
Rocky lost the battle but won the war. A love story disguised as a boxing match!
I grew up on all the Rocky movies, it’s my great pleasure to watch people fall in love with the characters for the first time.
My dad took me to a few Rocky movies, and now I get to take my kids to the creed movies.

Very nice. 😉
To get Butkus back, Stallone wouldn't pay $3,000, so the guy said "Then put me in the movie", so he did!!!! (Graham Norton show)
I love that the movies final words are literally ”I love you”. Shows what the movie is about lol
I think it is important to mention the dangers of drinking raw eggs. That line, "you hit the meat now she wants to.." LOL
Winner of 3 Oscars including Best Picture.
FYI, A "cut man" is the guy who works on your cuts between rounds to try and control and possibly stop the bleeding.
You are on a good road with this movie series. Just wait til part 3.
I've been telling people for years that the Rocky movies are a love story. And Stallone confirmed it in the new Netflix documentary.
A cut man tends to a boxer's facial cuts in between rounds during a boxing match. Typically, the cut man needs to quickly stop any bleeding, as the referee may use their discretion to end the match if a boxer gets cut and is bleeding too much.

RIP Burt Young(Paulie) 10/8,23
On the soundtrack, the slow version of going the distance is actually called Rocky’s reward
Paulie definitely wasn't an officer in the Navy. A military commision requires a college degree.
Well according to that picture on the dresser he is definitely a Navy veteran. Either that or his father looked identical to him.
You can be in the Navy and not be an officer. It's called being enlisted. @@LatetotheParty

More than a sports drama and all about the heart.

This movie is a romance that happens to have boxing in it :) Absolutely love this movie

Not the sweetchuck and tackleberry shirt lmaooo i need that in my life
I saw Rocky III over 38 times in the theater. The first two, I originally saw once each, on HBO.
The mobster's driver always reminded me of Harvey Keitel.
While in the Marines, Burt Young won 32 of his 34 boxing matches.
Rob’s shirt is legendary! Sorry I had to say it
Love how Rocky prays ahead of his life's biggest challenge and moment. Give it to God.
Was just in Philadelphia and did the steps for the 2nd time. They now have a Rocky store you get souvenirs
The poster having the colors the wrong way was a mistake, they fixed it by addressing it with dialogue.
No, a cut man deals with cuts on a boxer’s face during the fight.

A cut man repairs the cuts on your face. Always thought that was selfexplanatory lol.
I cannot wait for this reaction! Truly a great franchise!
The greatest!
a cut man treats your cuts during the fight
Hope y’all watch them all! Great reactions, y’all are awesomen
I'll have a night to remember with Vanessa. Good times indeed
Saw at the theater! Epic movie! Thanks Y’all
The actors the studio wanted to play Rocky included Robert Redford, Ryan O'Neal, Burt Reynolds, or James Caan. But Stallone's agents insisted that Stallone was cast as Rocky.
25:24 lol hilarious
Great reaction. Look forward to the rest of the series.
The turtles are still alive
I'm old enough to have seen it in theaters when it came out, and it was every bit the sensation with audiences back then as you've heard.
Rocky movies traditionally come out at Thanksgiving. Except Creed 3
Oh my lord Vanessa looks amazing. That is a beautiful top. Is it me or is she getting better looking?
This is such a great series with some awesome character arcs. Hope you go all the way through.
The turtles are Stallone’s. They are still alive.
The wrong color boxing shorts was an actual screw up by the props dept. They added the lines to the script to compensate.
your reaction and commentary are GREAT, guys! i love rediscovering movies with you!
Rocky just wanted to go all the way. Appolo did win. But, for Rocky he won.😊
The story is based on real life boxer Chuck Wepner, Stallone befriended him and got the story out of him and never gave him credit. There is a movie based on that

I've noticed that a young Sylvester Stallone has a slight resemblance to a young Paul McCartney🤔
Great Reaction! Looking forward to the sequels
In real life Paulie was an actual boxer in his younger days.
Loved growing up watching the Rocky series! Hearing what you think of them will be fun. Rocky 3 is my favorite
Nice! I hope you continue with the rest of the franchise!
Love the police academy shirt, Sweetchuck and Zed.
I hope the both of u are goin through the rocky franchise
Not really a comment on this movie but, since you mentioned doing Thanksgiving themed movies this month, I would hope that "Trains, Planes, and Automobiles" is on your to do list.
Rocky 1 and 2 are masterpieces

Oh man, I can't wait for you guys to watch the sequels, now!!! Now that you started it, you gotta finish the story!!
My favorite is Rocky III. I hope you'll watch all of them in order all the way to Creed II!
They are all on the list! We will get to them :)
“In order” is key. I’m not sure why people go out of order, it truly takes away from the experience.
@@Jason-bk3nl Absolutely.
Rocky 3 and rocky 6 are great sequels, spinoff all three creed movies especially the first creed is brilliant
A cut man fixes cuts.
That's Detroit's & Philly's own Diana Lewis. World class news reporter. Put some respeckt on her name, son. 26:57

No a cut man works on any cuts during the fight to control the bleeding so the fighter can continue to fight without blood pouring in his eyes
