You see a lot of people talking about it online but it's more of a vocal minority thing; Many owners of the Switch aren't the kind of people on gaming forums & such. A lot of gamers who post online have a problem with it, but that's not necessarily reflective of the customer base.
Let's face it, there's always been a huge 3rd Party market for hardware that fills the holes in Nintendo products. See the Angry Video Game Nerd's Gameboy accessories review to see what I mean.
You know you can adjust the controls in Mega Man X right? Next time you try playing it with a joycon, try using A and B or A and X instead of B and Y... Oh and, remap the dash to R, that makes it so that you can dash while charging your shot! You know, without having to double-tap a direction...
Michirin9801 as hard as it is, I have gotten completely used to dash jumping while charging all using the face button... All just so I can preserve both L and R for weapon select.
Fair enough, although once you remap the Dash to R you have 2 face buttons you can use to do your weapon select... Last time I played it however, I've mapped the weapon selection to L and Select, and it wasn't bad at all...
I’ve done it to mine. I think it’s a pretty huge improvement. Yeah it doesn’t have the normal dpad pivot, but it still feels really great and never had an issue pressing multiple inputs at the same time.

Kosog0NG because you may not wanna carry a controller and possible screen stand to enjoy an old school arcade game on switch. Some folks want the switch to be smaller so itll fit in a normal pocket.
The normal “d pad” on the joycon is so bad I taught myself how to use the stick and now I can’t even use d pads on my Xbox. I feel like I’ve forsaken an unspoken rule, an invisible taboo. I feel dirty.
I use a ps4 hori pad myself and the d pad is by far my favorite I have ever played on. I think the reason the d pad in the video might not be as high qualtiy as their regular ones is probably because of the smaller surface area. Hopefully they can improve on it in the future

Your videos are super easy to listen to and the (very) slight jank is honestly one of my favorite parts, like the video doesn't feel rehearsed 50 times. Really makes it feel like just a guy reviewing and doing stuff he likes. Even in the newer videos, where you've cleaned up a ton of your setup, it has the same vibes.

Playstation style (four triangular buttons) d-pad is the best for fighting games because you can control and feel the directions (especially diagonals) perfectly
cowtc SNES d-pad is the best as you can rest your thumb in the middle and make quick movements, playstation d-pad requires you to move your thumb more than what is needed.
I absolutely despise the clicky-ness of it. I used it for Kirby Star Allies and it was fine, but trying Celeste with it is impossible to land diagonals.
I have installed dpad mod shells for a couple of friends and they really love them and the modded joycons retain wireless capabilities and hd rumble as well
I got it last night baby, good product i like it. They shouldve used a more solid dpad not that squishy dpad that hurts your finger if u play for a few minutes
That’s actually pretty interesting. I’d probably get one if they made a version for the right joycon, that lowers the analog stick, shoves the Home button somewhere else onto the joycon. I love my switch, but the joycons really suck, in how they fit the analog and buttons, for me. Till then, I’m sticking with my pro controller.
The D-Pad basically saves gaming. I mean, I would rather use that for a 2D game, than using a joy stick because you may accidentally make your thumb go up, or down, and then it ruins it if you are doing a speed run mode. Thank god it is on the Playstation controllers, cuz that level in Crash Bandicoot NSane Trilogy with the bridges would be really hard if you were using the tightrope to glitch the level from the first game.
I'd love a pro controller where they switch the dpad and the analogue stick for the switch. Thank you for your review of this, I wouldn't have known it was only in handheld mode.
Speaking of the switch, this was a horrible thing that happened. I was at my friend's house, and he has a Nintendo Switch. On accident, I put in both red joycons on the switch, and one of them was upside down! It got stuck, and I am hopeful it did not get stuck forever.
If it didn't drain your battery and worked in wireless/tabletop mode, I would buy this. I really like the color and the fact that it's not 4 separate buttons, because I don't play local multiplayer games 99% of the time. When I do, I give the other player my Pro Controller and I use the Joy-Con grip.
Allen Xie how would that make a difference... You normally use the analog sticks for Mario kart, or you can use the the D-Pad (which you could also on the Wii u version of the mk8)
NihongoGamer is my favorite to listen to because of his coffee, his in depth video, and how he's Japanese with a British/Australian english accent. and no I'm not being nor is this intended to be racist
i personally like the individual button d-pads, i have a xbox 360 controller that is similar in design regarding the D-pad. i find it to be a much more precise method, but also my hands are pretty big so i guess the limitations that others experience dont slow me down
That's the one thing about Nintendo. They're the company who is always very innovative with their console. Trying new things and being creative........but more often than not, there is always some draw backs to their creativity. It's cool you can use the joy-cons as two controllers, but it would be nice to have a damn d-pad.....and don't get started on the actual shape of the switch in hand held mode and how awkward it is to hold it. Also, he isn't lying about that how the right analog gets in the way of the buttons cause it's so close to them. All in all, I love the switch and these are minor concerns that can be rectified, but keep these in mind if you're thinking about buying one.
I've gotten used to playing switch games without an actual D-pad so it'll feel weird to go back in my opinion. I wonder if the D-pad will be useful for Skullgirls considering the game was designed with an analog stick in mind.(And is actually easier to play with an analog stick despite the Keyboard having a better default button layout in my opinion. I like having all of my attack buttons near each other even if i sometimes misplace my hands and keep pressing the wrong keys.)
@@ryanrios519 Do you know any site where you can download classical music albums for free? In my country, it is impeccably tough to find cd albums and orchestral albums on sale
It's not just the button placement or design. It's the build quality as well. The sticks don't last. The stick drift has hapoened to two seperate set of controllers with me. Doesn't really matter if your system has great games if the controllers keep breaking.
But as you've said this is for portable mode. If you want a good dpad with a wireless controller the you use a proper pro controller, 8bitdo pro controller or an arcade stick
So basically.. You're paying $25 to replace one joycon for some junk that doesn't have rumble, motion, wireless, and drains your battery like crazy, JUST to have a Dpad? A d-pad that is actually worse than the original joycon's dpad? The joycon's D-pad is far superior! It's so difficult to play MK11 with the Pro Controller dpad. And the sticks aren't any better, too. The only way I can smoothly and easily perform combos, is using the joycon's d-pad. It's the only game I prefer using the Joycon grip. Other than that, the D-pad isn't really useful outside of precisely navigating thru stuff or using ingame actions that aren't movement
I'm thinking that the eBay/aftermarket shell replacements with D-pad would be a better option than this. Cuz you get to keep all the original features, the only thing that's changed is the D-pad for the left joycon, and all the important parts(electronic guts) stay the same.
A bit expensive for just one change, and it isn't as convenient if/when you wanted to play tabletop with a friend. Granted, i have one and its amazing, but if you only want a d-pad then maybe it isn't worth it.
I got around this by getting a shell that supported a dpad and got new custom buttons for the joycons. I was getting it anyway for customization purposes since dbrand wasn't a thing at the time. This way you get full functionality. But I guess opening up expensive electronics isnt everyone is thing

Alf Gonzalez didn't like it, since it's still doesn’t really feel like a proper d-pad.
Hoping Nintendo release an official version in the future.
That mod is horrible.

Honestly I don’t care about a d pad
that sad opening song. looks like you have good taste in Disappearance
Ahhh I got a switch today 😁

Me too, I just find myself using the analog stick in 2d games
For YOU. You cant say the controller is pointless because of that. It is exactly what im looking for.
@gabsdegameboi "The most pointless controller ever" ? And no need to be rude, bruh
@gabsdegameboi lol
I'm thinking that the eBay/aftermarket shell replacements with D-pad would be a better option than this. Cuz you get to keep all the original features, the only thing that's changed is the D-pad for the left joycon, and all the important parts(electronic guts) stay the same.

damn, was worried about the horrible button design. Happy that fixes are on the way.
Look...if you're that desperate about a D-pad. you'll just get a pro-controller.
A bit expensive for just one change, and it isn't as convenient if/when you wanted to play tabletop with a friend. Granted, i have one and its amazing, but if you only want a d-pad then maybe it isn't worth it.
i had the same issues as you were saying in the video. but, ever since i bought this [8bitdo sf30pro] extra joypad, it solved all my problems.
Looks like an Xbox One d-pad
Xbox one D-pad looks like the NES,SNES, GB,GBA,DS,3DS D-pad
I got around this by getting a shell that supported a dpad and got new custom buttons for the joycons. I was getting it anyway for customization purposes since dbrand wasn't a thing at the time. This way you get full functionality. But I guess opening up expensive electronics isnt everyone is thing
