If that was the rig Mick used for the Andy Timmons gig, no wonder Andy was raving about his tone! Flipping amazing! I could watch Simon explain circuits all day.
I agree 100% This was a great episode and guys - I just watched the Drown in my own tears clip. Wow! Your approach to the arrangement was superb and the vocal was incredible - I'm a huge Ray fan and you guys owned it. Great job!
It is so illuminating every time Simon is on the show. There really ought to be two of him; one to keep doing Kingsley, the other to make regular appearances like this. Just brilliant
I’ve been waiting for this type of explanation. Do NOT apologize. Now you’re are getting somewhere, now it’s getting interesting…….we need more of this from amp builders and purveyors such as Kingsley.
I don’t know if my mind truly understood how amp gain stages and eq worked until Simon explained all of this so beautifully. This was one of the most informative episodes I have ever seen from you fine gents. (And that’s saying a lot) The guitar playing was spectacular as well !
Thanks Chris! Glad you enjoyed it. Even after many years of this stuff, I learned a huge amount from this ep too. Mick here. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have watched this episode twice already and will probably watch it again. Simon’s explanations of circuits and gain have opened my eyes! And what a player!
Oh yes! Another episode with Simon! What a treat! Last time he was on he taught me you don't need to beat the crap out of your guitar to get epic tone. He has such a light touch and still has really beautiful tone! (I think I still need to take that lesson to heart though haha!)
Simon does so much with volume adjustments and playing dynamics. I could listen to him play for hours. "Tasty" guitar player. Somewhere, there is a Kingsley-Minstrel in my future (for sure).
Simon is such a great player. But his willingness to share his knowledge is simply generous. He is the real deal and I believe his offerings/ products are so unique in that they are not your typical OD or preamp, he really offers so much tone shaping ability if your willing to really understand the pedals operation. He doesn’t seem to hold back or just slam together a typical circuit with a minor tweak just to get a pedal on the market. Absolutely genuine. Thanks gentlemen.
Wow, that is the best Les Paul tone I’ve ever heard! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve heard great Les Paul tones, but this is just so clear and crisp and full of fidelity and feel! You have to be a proficient player though, this tone will reveal every nuance of your playing, good and bad.
I bought two Fender Bassman 20's and had them modified: upgraded the output transformers, optimized the preamp circuitry. The mod that was most important after that was to have the line-out socket turned into a power-amp input bypassing the preamp. The inspiration came directly from the idea to purchase and use one of Simon's floor preamps and run the two in stereo.
What an absolute MASTER CLASS on understanding, using and dialing in the Juggler V3. I'll be watching this episode multiple times over the coming months until I recieve my Juggler.
I get my Juggler & Constable next week from Simon. I just purchased the only Fryette 2/50/2 power amp available on reverb or anywhere in North America. Also just got the only Humdinger I could find as well. The tricky part now is going to be hooking everything up on my G2 so I have wet / dry and stereo reverb… 🤔 Joe at GigRig is helping me try and figure it all out. 😬🎸👍
Learnt more about amps & gain in 1hr 19m, than I learned in the first 20 years of playing. Simon explains it, well enough for me to understand it, which is a skill in itself! Great show guys 👌
"I'm really fumbly today." LOL, whatever. Simon you are an absolutely fantastic player. Your pedals are amazing, too. I always love when Simon is on the show.
That pedal show is the highest level of wine sniffing tone talk with the most regular relatable friends. . . Which equals .. awesome and thank you for the ride guys.
Appreciate all the technical breakdown & dialogue, helps me understand what's actually happening when you turn knobs or change switches. Awesome work as always, thanks guys!
Oh my. Like many others, I will be watching this repeatedly to soak it all up. My students will also reap benefits of this stunning Master Class Tube Compendium. Thanks to all for your time & input. The wealth of knowledge based on experience & research is immeasurable. And the willingness to share & educate the guitar playing public is so very much appreciated, gentlemen.
Mick do not apologize for the talking. I have found this topic extremely interesting and Simon's explanation was very intuitive and informative. I would have been more than happy with him explaining the circuit designs and how they work for the entire episode. I want to learn more about it. I wish u guys could get him back on the show for a lecture on this topic.
Dear Pedal Friends This is the comment I tried to leave on Superchat on Monday - I couldn’t get my head around making it work Cheeks, Groins, Thighs & Hips no less!! No question today just the comment of Thank you - thank you for making a fantastic show, for hosting a fantastic Experience Day (24-06-22, Martha Smells) - I’m thrilled for you that your extra dates sold out in a day - and thank you for introducing me to Andy Timmons. I honestly wasn’t that fussed about him before the gig in Frome but his playing and tone that night and his presence at the Experience Day the day after showed just what a great guy he is as well as a great player. I too shed some tears along with you two at his gorgeous playing in (last) Fridays show. I could gush on about how much my tone has improved but take it from me - Thank you!!! PS I should mention that Mr Simon Jarrett is every bit as humble and deferential in person as he comes across here - and is also an awesome player!!!
I primarily make single ended amps. But my Ed Robertson Signature Head is PP 6V6 and I use an autoformer to create the phase inversion. So the signal goes into the autoformer then ground (or bias) the center tap of the autoformer and the other side creates an exact 180 degree out of phase signal. The other cool thing is the output tubes see a very low DC resistance. Most of the phase inverters are 12AX7A and they are boosted in bias. This is why you can overdrive the phase inverter. What a great show, makes me pick up a pen and paper and design something new. Thanks! Gordon
I learned so much about amps from this! I had a pretty good basic understanding of preamps, tone controls and power amps, but this brought a lot into focus. Thanks everyone!
Man, Simon’s “touch” is just magic! So luxurious and refined. What a joy to just listen to him noodle. On a related note, my Kingsley Page is fast becoming my always on pedal.
I also received my Kingsley page earlier this year. I have tried different pedals into it( and vis versa) try fi 18 watt color driver, venuram shanks and a Doric’s RC booster. And they are all very nice pedals. But I find I prefer the page alone into my amp and to just ride the guitars volume knob. The page my just be my favorite pedal I own. I’m not fan an mick but I got a “couple” pedals. Just through years of accumulation.
@@PPIMV yeah I truly love it I’m a child of the 60’s 1961 to be exact.and very much a front of amp kind of guy. I may have to sell something so I can get this new pedal ! Just magic and your tone a touch is outstanding
LOVED the explanation of the ODS circuit and Mick pointing out the 12AX7 triode function. I tinker with restoring old tube radios as well as diy guitar pedals and this - along with Simons' description of the placement of EQ - got me thinking about how I might replicate that in pedal circuit design. Love this kind of content - you guys have a great mastery of sound design. Thank you!
Spent some time with my "Amp guy" today dialing in an old amp and the information in this episode helped me understand why what he did worked. We swapped out the tubes in V2 and V4 with some lower gain tubes to get the gain staging more to my liking. Then I added an Eminence Delta Pro 12a speaker and......Perfecto. It all matters. Because tone! Thanks for the knowledge.
Simon is a fabulous bloke! Smokes on the gtr, plays with ❤ !! Also, puts ❤ into his devices !! Great show, always done in a pro fashion whilst keeping it real !!
Wow, what an incredibly educational episode! Simon is a deep well of knowledge and he has such a great way of explaining things. Not to mention a KILLER guitarist! I'm going to be watching this one several times.
When Dan is using the Lightspeed into the Kingsley set on the clean tone, that's my favorite. I actually like using a Dumble style clean with pedals for overdrive, because of the less compressed, more open sound.
Not even watched this yet and already so excited. Have so many Kingsley pedals and honestly, they’re exceptional. And customer service is exemplary. Recommended to tone hounds everywhere.
Watching Simon talk about amps makes me so happy. Please have an episode of just him talking about amps and amp tech. Like the JHS episode but for amps!
Wonderful show guys! Simon is my all time favorite guest of yours! I have dang near at least one of each of his pedals and two of his amps. I can't get enough of those sounds he designs! Would love to see you do a show from his place someday!
Perfect timing. I reached the head of the waiting list on Thursday and had been thinking of the Artisan for a while. This nailed my decision! - if I can get half the tone Simon acheived it’ll be that piece of the puzzle I’ve been seeking for a couple of years now - rich sax-like sustain at the roll of the volume knob.
I can't click the LIKE button enough. This channel is already great. But this video is so, so good. And if I may. Absolutely no need for Mick to apologize for anything. The "interruptions" were informative, especially for new viewers. And they allowed Simon to play off them and further enhance his narrative. Besides, the passion shown through. And in music, passion is everything.
Yes, yes, yes! Have Simon back on TOMORROW! I want to hear about two things not covered here . . . . using one of these babies with solid state power amp like the Seymour Duncan PowerStage . . . . and going direct to DAW or FOH PA.
Simon is a supper nice guy, I bought several of his pedals directly and these two may be added to my collection. Artisan will fill a void being fuzzy not fuz like the broadcast.
We are be-mored by the opportunity to listen to Simon explain his stuff. Long live the Kingsley range! There is no other like it! On a side-note - I've just slung some Curt Mangan's onto my strat and they have transformed it/me. Good call Matt Schofield and TPS,
What a fantastic show! Thanks Mick, Dan, and Simon! Great info and playing. The audio sounded top shelf and what a wealth of amp circuit knowledge Simon brings to the table. Time to get my name on Simon's "List". Cheers
This video is absolutely fantastic, there's nothing better than listening to someone talk about a subject they're intimately familiar with. I cannot wait for the home/low volume tones follow up!
Thanks guys, another great episode. Juggler into the HRD FX return was particularly impressive, Simon's playing helps of course, complex harmony that doesn't sound cluttered, it's a neat trick.
Very very late to the Kingsley party and have been looking into acquiring a 'Page' boost recently and came across these videos. What a fantastic human being Simon is. Fantastic guitar player, pedal designer and person in general. Such great insight in this video and learned so much about tubes and gain stages along with how the interaction between preamp, phase inverters and power amp sections actually work. Now I'm off to the Kingsley website to empty my wallet!! 😂
I have one of Simon's pedals the Harlot. I think he is one of the most innovative pedal makers we have today. I just love his stuff, his playing and instruction.
I really like the concept of maximising the amp’s core components and tone by using a pre-amp pedal, rather than just simply laying multiple OD pedals over the top. It’s a similar concept to making the most of your guitar by using the tone and volume controls, rather than using your pedals EQ to shape the sound. So many sounds to explore, and not enough hours in the day.
Man! I ALWAYS love the content of your shows Gents, but this last couple of weeks... You guys are really hitting pay dirt. Completely riveted to this episode
Great show - I have been preparing an old Peavey Bandit for one of Simon's pedals. It has an effects loop and with a new speaker may sound great in the shed! Remember, Poutine must only be served with the finest cheese curds! St. Albert curds in my region!
I just received an email that my Juggler V3 will ship next week. Looking forward to it's arrival. Thanks TPS, for introducing me to Simon Jarrett and Kingsley.
Wow - awesome playing! Also, I didn't realise that we can bother Mick into playing guitars... PLEASE play the Collings Junior! I love that guitar and am so jealous that you get to be the custodian of it. Understand you have some absolutely killer guitars at the moment but I think it probably is my favourite TPS guitars.
@@ThatPedalShow Oh, haha. I’m just watching to listen to you 2. It’s just a bonus that you happen to hang out with some of the best guitar players (and amp/pedal builders on the planet - Simon just blew my mind).
Great info on effects loops. I've never been more disappointed in an amp than when I engaged the passive effects loop of my Two-Rock Bloomfield Drive. That's when I truly understood the phrase, "tone suck." It was palpable. I even did an experiment where I ran nothing but a 4-inch patch cable through the effects loop, and it was like a wet blanket was thrown over that glorious Two-Rock tone. It's pretty much unusable... so even the best of amps are susceptible to poor effects loops. I also have a Friedman Wildwood 20, and that effects loop is awesome.
What Simon said about the Marshall amps derived from Tweed amps makes total sense, that's why Marshalls always inherently had more gain than Blackface Fenders even comparing clean channel to clean channel
I'm using a Kingsley Constable with an amp that has a simple unbuffered effects loop which is basically just an insert point before the phase inverter. I can get great plexi drive sounds that way. Then I'm using a reactive load to bring the signal back down to a level that my delays and reverb can handle. I'm reamplifying the signal using the effects return of a solid state amp. I also have the option of going direct after my delays and reverbs with an IR loader. It's a bit complicated, but it gives great sounds at any volume level. I also use a small relay based loop switcher with remote with a remote so that I can switch between my amp's preamp and the Constable. I did find that with a long cable run, that I was losing some high end sparkle from the Constable. I ended up putting a tube buffer pedal between the Constable and the amp to restore the high end. The tube buffer was the only thing that I could find that could handle the high output signal of the Constable. The Juggler pedal has an output buffer which is a nice feature.
Very interesting! It sounds like you are getting as many miles outta the Constable as you possibly can. I am running my Constable in the loop of my AC30CC and it sounds just amazing! I was thinking about finding a way to toggle between the AC30’s pre amp and the Constable. From what I’m understanding from your post you are doing something like that as well? At any rate it sounds like a killer set up you’re running
I had my device on mute and yet I could still hear Mick’s opening chord at the very start of the video. :) After I put my headphones on I couldn’t help but rewind back to the start to hear it for real. :)
Excellent once again guys, I’ve learned more by watching the show for the last couple of years than actually playing for the previous 45! Essential viewing for all guitar players, aspiring or established! 👍👏👏👏
Here's an idea for Simon for us millennials - highlight the best (or maybe for him least worst) Kingsley options for going into a cab sim pedal (maybe show it working with an Iridium in amp bypass, neunaber iconoclast, the new UAFX pedals, maybe even oxbox). I think you could convince a lot of bedroom players to get a Kingsley front end to their amp pedals. But people might need to se the options laid out and learn how to avoid digital clipping since a lot of your pedals have so much output on tap.
You want one of his preamps (Maiden, Squire, Constable, Juggler (which is a maiden and a page in one box)) or the Page TS in preamp mode. Which one you get has a lot to do with what your budget and feature needs are. I'm on the waitlist for a Juggler which I'll be running through cab IRs in my Hx Stomp using line level ins. I have a Minstrel pushing a Lightkeeper (also a D style preamp) at the moment. I sometimes use an entire amp model in the HX if I need something with a more distinctive sound. You'll probably want an Artisan to put in front of that.
Mick & Dan, this is when you're show is the best! Showing off new pedals is one thing. But learning about how preamps, phase inverters, power amps work is amazing. It helps so much to explain what we experience when using our gear. And it helps us to make better choices and to tweak our gear to get the sounds we want. Otherwise we are literally flying blind. Thank you again for this. Please more more more :)
If that was the rig Mick used for the Andy Timmons gig, no wonder Andy was raving about his tone! Flipping amazing! I could watch Simon explain circuits all day.
Ha! Remember it’s Simon playing of course! That does make a bit of a difference. But yep, it’s a flippin crazy clear rig. :0)

I have a Kingsley D32C amp and a V1 Minstrel.. Simon is amazing. I love how I can go clean to overdrive by pick attack alone
Just wow. Amazing playing, amazing tones, amazing information. Just like the AT ep., this is going to take a few watches to absorb it all.
This is pure gold. I want more Kingsleys.
Oh man, what’s treat. Thanks guys for the upload! Perfect for a Friday.
Educational and fascinating. Thanks Jarrett, Mick and Dan. Happy Friday!
I think the last 2 weeks have been your best shows ever! You guys are killin it! Rock on.
Thanks! It all gets rubbish again next week - back to me and Dan. :0)
Maaaaan I live for headroom and clean tones, this video is the business! Great job, you three!
Yeah, very interesting, indeed!
That Gibson LP is lovely! Dream guitar!
Best thing to wake up to, Simon on TPS!
Simon! Amazing tones, hardware, and playing!
Nice one Mick! Thanks for being here!
I have Kingsley Constable and Hatchet, so amazing!Simon is a Well-Deserved genius and master!
