Shawn Tubbs is the man! Disgustingly good looking, horribly brilliant and frighteningly decent as a person. Makes all our lives better. Oh, and TPS is pretty damned special too ❤
The first thing I noticed when I first heard Shawns early videos was THE INTONATION!!!!! Everything is always so beautifully in tune. He is an absolute master and such a genuine person. Would love to hear that trio,
If this episode was a pedal it would be the Memory Men. Completely unforgettable. The delight and disbelief on Mick and Dan's faces is like family watching kids light up with the best surprise or present ever. The mutual respect was obvious and should be a reminder not to sell TPS and your gifts short to many who are in awe of what your wisdom, playing, constant growth, inspiration and especially your humour that always makes each episode memorable. Shawn's playing is other worldly and he is so grounded, open and comes across as a really great guy. You so often mention the honour of having guests in the room and will have memories stored to treasure through the years. The fact that you share these moments make the pleasure and privilege available to all to watch over and over. Magic. Much Gratitude Gents.
There are so many great TPS episodes, but for anyone that has never watched one, this might be the best. Terrific job guys! You are all an inspiration.
the talk about playing outside the key/scale/chords of a song was SO fascinating. As one of those odd people who know more about music theory than guitar playing, I found it rather enlightening to hear Shawn make the point that listening to it slow can be excruciating. Because he's absolutely right! When you go and slow down those jaw dropping licks that you heard off some record before you knew how to play it (the eye opening moment for me was that first guitar solo in Rosanna), you have that moment of like..."wait, these are just wrong notes? You can do that?" And I think that's one of the most valuable things you can hear, especially for guitar where fretboard patterns can feel so all-encompassing to new players.
So many of my now favorite modern guitarists have come from this show bringing them to light. You guys have such an influence on inspiring guitarists not only with gear but also with spectacular guests. Keep up the amazing work!
Gosh darn,- only 44 seconds in and this has to be some of the most vocally eloquent bluesy playing I have ever heard,- and I´m a metalhead. This is gonna be a GOOD friday afternoon. Thanks in advance guys. Now,- back to the show. Cheers
8.14: I mean, seriously? That was FAB! And with zero warning or fanfare - that’s the TPS way. And it’s already a fantastic episode with one of the humble modern great pro players.
He’s definitely my favourite demo person. His playing is offside, and he goes through features and how he’d use a specific effect with such detail- fantastic. And he seems like a great guy!
I hired Shawn to play leads on a song, sent him the files on a Sunday, got them back on Monday and it was AMAZING! I expected one solo track over the solo section, but he did three full tracks, one of them a baritone, and they were all complimentary and awesome. If you want to check it out, see Banjo Bones song Faceless Man.
Given the transformative effect certain YT channels have had on my relationship with pedals, this is right up there with the Andy Martin visit. Shawn is an amazing player and comes across as a genuinely great person. What a treat.
I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy the episode - the thinking was "another youtuber" meh. But actually, I really enjoyed his stories of being a professional musician at so many levels from touring, to sessions. Great stuff.
Shawn Tubbs is genuinely the nicest people (ive ever heckled on RUclips). I posted a comment that was a bit negative about a pedal he was demoing. His response in dealing with my negativity was SO well handled that i immediately re-commented calling him perhaps the nicest person on RUclips....lifted my mood immediately. Super nice guy......
It's my observation that this channel is absolute magic for the world of guitar. Thank you Dan, Mick and all of your guests for sharing so very much. This room holds a special place in my heart on my musical journey. Thank you. 😌
Constantly inspired by TPS. Glad to see you are well, Dan and Mick. Thanks Shawn for so much amazingness packed into 90 minutes. I had no idea for The Violet Burning. Chosen and Strength are two albums that spoke (and continue to speak) so much to me. VB at Cornerstone 1992 remains one of my favorite concert experiences. Café and a croissant on me if you ever pass through Paris 🙏🏻
Haven’t watched this yet, but will tonight, and incase he doesn’t mention it, you can spot Shawn on acoustic during STP’s Unplugged set from the early 90s. What a player.
Love this community Dan keep bringing what you do you keep it lighthearted and fun Mick keep bringing the introspection and centered grounded point of perspective y’all have a great balance here Thanks so much I have come so far due in no small part to these guys When no one wants to nerd out with me I always have tps If you ever care to watch our journey go listen to super secret band 🤘 🤫🤫🤫
What a spectacular episode this is - well done TPS. Shawn’s playing and approach just grabs my ear every time (not to mention what a decent human he appears to be along with it). I will also admit every time i watch him on an HSS type guitar i then look at my various SSS guitars and they just know one of them is going to get a humbucker at some point. Mick you definitely need to float the trem on at least one of your strats too, i had mine all locked down and blocked up for decades until i was listening to Jeff Beck (if i recall correctly) and just had to give it a try on one of mine again.
I'm ashamed to say that this is the first time I've knowingly heard Shawn's playing! I'll definitely be listening to more in the future though... Great player and great human by all accounts. Another great show!
Shawn buddy great you got to visit the Studio and hang ! fantastic you got to make the trip over !! Killer playing as always and a perfect almost 1&1/2 hours Mick & Dan! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Just incredible......and that's just Dan and Mic's reaction to Shawn's playing 😂😂😂 What a MONSTER player, and self-taught, dammit! 😳😎 Have to admit, once we got into the "Bank 3, Preset blah....." I checked out. My brain does not work that way, ever! My GigRig 6 button, On/Off QuarterMaster is as complicated as I can handle 🤓😁
I have to admit I'd not heard of Shawn before this video, so thanks to Dan and Mick for bringing him in. I'm immediately a fan, Shawn is just so generous, gracious, cool-headed, such a gentleman, and just watching the video I feel like my own playing has already changed in my head, just that change of perspective from contact with an enlightened mind. He mentions some of my guitar heroes but mentioned a few I hadn't heard of that I now need to dig into. My first thought was woodshed but my second thought was to play with other people, stay connected. "Feet to the fire" indeed. Huge thanks to all!
I have discovered so many different artists and even genres from this channel over the years of watching and a deep dive on Shawn’s channel is my next stop. Can’t thank you guys enough for sharing all of these incredible people and the art they create.
Awesome episode! You both have had some amazing fellow musicians on your show and this is one of them, but gentlemen I believe it's due time to have the one and only prolific Nashville Session Ace Tom Bukovac aka' "Uncle Larry " join you both for a brain picking and literal picking session of greatness. Just wishing and hoping...Thank you mates, great job as usual!
This may've been mentioned as well in some comment section, as far as some of Shawn's licks (& other guitarists may do it some as well - Mateus comes to mind - Shawn was just the first for me that I heard doing it), but the "Tubbs" lick(s) that get me are the ones where he falls back down the neck in a sort-of "gracefully and accurately falling down the stairs on purpose with no broken bones" flurry of notes where it almost looks hap-hazardous, but the more you watch him play, the more you realize how on purpose and pre-meditated it was. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Watching the video now and will come back and edit this comment with a time stamp if I find one. LOL! *EDIT - Yes, they started talking about exactly that!

I can only echo what has already said about Shawn by so many others. He is a humble and exceptional guitar player and a great human being! I had the privilege of meeting him in person at Sweetwater Gear Fest a few times back when that was a thing. He's the same to a single wanna-be guitar player at a Revv booth as he is on RUclips! The world is a better place with him in it. I wish him success in where-ever his journey leads.
Listening to the three of you talk about playing "outside" - especially Shawn's analogy of his playing being akin to a parachutist hoping the chute deploys - was really insightful. As someone without any formal music training, I can't explain what it means to play "outside" in terms of note choices, but it certainly does sound unique. I'll admit I find it fatiguing to listen to that kind of playing for a while. Why? To use another analogy, it reminds me of the fatigue I feel while trying to learn a second language; and until one is fluent in whatever language, the broken, stumbling, err-ridden attempt at speaking would no doubt be grating to the ears of a native speaker. I've tried playing a half step below the pentatonic boxes and bending or sliding into the target notes, and it's really difficult to make it sound fluid. Shawn makes it look and sound so smooth. I don't think I could cope with the stresses of being a session player and the expectation to nail it on take one!
First HUGH thanks for sharing your time with Shawn Tubbs (not enough superlatives in the language). Shawn said something soooo important (IMHO) when asked about playing "outside" in describing coping some ideas from Mr. Brecker I wanted to add my 2 cents. I think he is talking about what Rick Beato described as flow on a recent Jeff Beck video when quoting his buddy Vinnie Colaiuta (paraphrasing) don't over think it be in the moment. Assuming I understood his point, I think when player of Mr. Tubbs musical stature says he doesn't fully understand something (i.e. comments about resolving a phrase) it should NOT (or EVER) be misconstrued in any way as a statement of lack of knowledge or inability to understand complicated linear harmonic approaches, rather being in the moment and going for it. I think what we call Jazz today (in all of its varied forms and expressions) was being formulated there were no books to study a players approach, readily available transcriptions that dissected every note, chord to the lowest analytic level. I sooo appreciate Dan and Mick what you do, this one is AWESOME!! Thanks.
Thanks for bringing us what looks to be another great TPS Episode. I hope everyone's health at TPS is continuing to improve. It's going to be a rainy windy couple of days here as the remnants of Hurricane Ian pass through. Thanks again....Cheers.
Hey there friend, send you well wishes with the storm, we got hit pretty hard here in Tampa but nowhere near as bad as those in Naples, Punta Gorda, Ft Myers, Port Charlotte, etc. Thankfully it should be much weaker when it reaches anyone north of Florida but please be safe anyways. All the best. 🙏🏼
Super cool! Shawn Tubbs is the quiet monster guitarist. Thank you for the interview. Love to watch Dan laugh with joy when Shawn plays the higher level stuff. That is what it's all about!

Big Violet burning fan here in Nashville. Love that older stuff you played on as well as their newer stuff. Great episode!
Loved Lab Sound…Did my first recording sessions next door as a teenager. Forget the name of the studio
Literally the second I saw the video of Shawn and the Captain I said to myself "he has to go on TPS, there has to be TPS with Shawn Tubbs!"
Thanks so much Shawn, it was a great hang! My bridge is now floating. Ha! Mick here. :0)
Mick is sitting on the right. Hold on…I have to turn my phone upside down. 🙃
The parallel universe.... not sure I approve of the seating arrangement fellas. Haha looking forward forward watching this one.
For once he's on the right side of the D&M drive
Imagine not watching TPS for a while and you click on this video and Mick has a goatee, a gold strat, and is sitting on the right 😵💫

Absolutely one of the very best TPS episodes ever. Great all-around discussion with one of the best players around.
I love how Shawn took the riff that Mic always plays & jazzed it up & put his own funk on it.
