You would never be overprotective of your children if you knew you raised them right. You would trust them to make their own mistakes just like you did when you was young. Plus if you're honest with your kids they know that if they get in a jam they can always come to you, and not hide.

You've got half the equation right in raising children, you can't shelter them from what's out there. The other half is communication and teaching them to made to right choices by letting them experience the consequences of their choices from early on as long as those consequences aren't life threating(letting them cross the street into moving traffic) or socially immoral(Being cruel to animals). People have free will, so arm them with knowledge of how the world works. That way when they go out with their friends, they can make the decision through knowledge and not get into a car with their drunk friend driving, not leave a party with someone sketchy. In the end, an informed decision gives them the better outcome, but there are no guaranties.
My parents southern as hell. But they also real. Therefore as a female I spent so many nights side eyeing dudes while I went through music in a random house while one of my friends was getting laid. I’ll always appreciate that.
