Bulova is the most frustrating brand in that they have some of the most rich and essential history in watchmaking bar none but do so little with it today. All of the things collectors gush over they have … you like the moon? Bulova was there. You like space travel in general? Their accutron movements were on the instrument panel of every Apollo mission. You like dive watches? They were in direct competition with blancpain for government dive watch contracts in the 50s. Horological significance? Accutron was the most important development in watchmaking until quartz. Military watches? They were an official military supplier since WWII and their astronaut model was issued to 60s military jet pilots. I could go on all day. These reissues are a step in the right direction but it still seems the folks at bulova aren’t even aware of what a goldmine they are really sitting on. Heartbreaking to see a brand that could give the best of the Swiss a run for their money historically making middle of the mall garbage

@@mankdemelord6974 yes and I’d put Movado in there too. At least tag heuer has maintained some small amount of collector cache, people are okay paying the asking price for a Monaco or a Carrera. The fact that there really doesn’t exist a single modern bulova anyone finds worth it at msrp is a shame and a prime example of mismanagement of an essential brand. They should be studied as an example of what not to do as a brand lol

Apparently those 1/4 second markers are to measure how far off the second hand is from the actual second markers.
If only Bulova could have given the Lunar Pilot the same satin case finish as this watch. I'd be wearing one right now if they had.

Ah Bulova - agree completely; it's like it's two separate businesses. The reissues are lovely - I bought a devil diver reissue last year (at half rrp!) and love it. I'm not sure who the contemporary stuff is aimed at. It must sell though - they keep making em....

I bought the devil diver just last week at a Tjmaxx! Never thought that would happen, haha. The contemporary stuff is just odd, and anything normal is tied to a celebrity,I think this takes from the brand instead of adding to it.

The rotating hour bezel is probably compensating for the lack of hour counter on the chronograph. Turn the chrono on and turn the hour counter to the hour hand and now you are tracking the minutes and hours of the timer.
Edit: I actually look for a chronograph that can count hours because I use that function to track how much time I have left on the parking meter. XD

Love the Space Force shirt. I got to visit the space Force Base in Thule, Greenland a couple of years ago. Regrettably, I found no lightersabers or space marines but it was still an awesome experience after making it to the top of the Dundas plateau and leaving my rock up there. 👍

I bought one of these last year and I couldn't get it to sit comfortably on my wrist due to the hidden lug strap placement. Once I changed the strap, it was a lot better. Most people who see it think it's a bottle opener shape rather than a parking meter which is understandable because they never grew up when coin parking meters were a thing, unlike me lol

Love Bulova! I've got an original '71 Bulova Surfboard Chrono and a couple of 1920's tank watches. Would have loved to seen a mechanical version of this one - would be way more in keeping or at least a decent multi tick quartz such as in their moon watch (Citizen does own Bulova after all). But Kudos to Bulova for their innovative pieces (excluding their ugly ones like the ones you showed at the start :D ) Excellent review Jodie!

For this type of look, I prefer the horizontal balance of the Bulova Chronograph A a/k/a the Surfboard. That one is also more legible (depending on the color scheme you choose), has 200m WR, and is just more fun. Neither one, however, solves the quartz issue. You can get the Surfboard with a Sellita SW510 for $2950 MSRP. But if I really wanted this vintage look, I would be tempted to save for a Tudor Heritage Chrono.

Nice watch, different but not overly so. Not sure I'd wear it, but it's still a nice piece of nostalgia. I do think it would have been better with a mecaquartz on the style of the VK64 rather than this. It's definitely at the cheaper end of the quartz chronograph movements, and is dear even at the reduced price. I got a stunning looking solar powered Pulsar Chronograph with the same ticking chrono hand for half the price of the half price paid for this. It's like they made a homage to a classic car then put a Honda 50 motorbike engine in it. You'd think that for a limited edition, they'd put a bit more effort into it. Btw, this movement is in some $50 Ali Express watches. Thanks for the review. P. S. My Pulsar chrono hand does at least, hit the markers.

Why do companies feel the need to pull a watch out of their back catalogue, change it, then call it a "reissue"? Bulova should have kept to the original design and not added the rotating bezel, which I suspect they did only because the original had the winder at the bottom and they needed something to put there since the Miyota movement has the winder between the pushers. Speaking of which, why do they put a quartz movement in what is already an expensive watch?

That thing fell out of the ugly tree, hit every branch on the way down, landed in the ugly pit and was carted off to the ugly hospital to be made even uglier. Can't believe they'll sell 5,000 of those things...

Gives me a bit Tudor heritage chrono vibes. I mean they are both reimagined pieces of a time with that kind of interesting designs, but there are not so many nowadays, right?

Chris2011 pretty well summed it all up in his post below. Great review though Doc!

I remember seeing the originals of this in the PX for what was a pretty reasonable sum. I like the reissue quite a bit. Hmmm.

This could go into a series called “Jody’s Watch Oddities”.

If nothing else, a rather original and interesting design! Also a bullhead with a pointy chin, i'm going to be calling this one a "ram-head" lol. Not quite my style but a proper conversation starter for sure. Wonder how it'd look on various NATOs?

Great video Jody but I couldn't see myself wearing something so odd looking let alone paying the asking price...
