The Artist Way changed my life too. After embracing the concepts in the book, I moved away from my abusive family. In school I took all the art classes I could and wanted to become a painter. But, to please my parents I stayed main stream and worked in clerical jobs. My soul was withering away. After reading Julia Cameron's book I became daring and moved to Taos, New Mexico to explore my creative self. One day, while working in a boutique and taking a check from a customer, I looked up and said "Thee Julia Cameron!" to the customer. I couldn't believe it, the person who gave me courage to be me was right in front of me!
Thank you for sharing! That was the book that spoke most to me among all the books Patrick talked about. My mother always told me I can't paint. My dad was amazing at drawing, I think she was jealous and tried to "secure me"...

I really appreciate your videos Patrick! I've heard of the book The Artists Way but was not sure to buy it. I recall my creativity was suppressed by my parents in childhood and was told that I was wasting my time when I was working on art stuff. Thanks for the recommendation. I also have the book by John Bradshaw which has been sitting on my book shelf for years. It's time to read it!

I live in the Pacific Northwest where it usually rains a lot, but we’ve been going through heatwaves lately and I really miss the cool, calming rain. 💙 Thank you again for another helpful video, I’m still so early in my journey but each video you’ve shared has been crucial to getting me out of this weak mindset and into a healthy future.
Have you heard of Sarah Peyton? She has a book called "Your Resonant Self- guided meditations and exercises to engage your brain's capacity for healing" which helped me heal my critical, and self-sabotaging, inner voice. Hi Patrick 🙂 I found you through the crappy childhood fairy video you were on. I can't believe how much it's helped watching your videos as well as hers. The Artists Way came up in another interview and I thought you mentioned it here and I was right!! 😄 P.s. I LOVE that you restarted a sentence at the end of this video and didn't edit that out! Thanks for being authentic Patrick. Watching this again made my heart feel full tonight.
I ordered the Homecoming book and Susan Forward's 'Toxic Parents' last week thanks to this channel, but it's going to take 3 weeks - 1 month to get here (Romania).
The absorb /reject adjective link is slightly off and broken in the description. Great recommendations, I'm currently reading another of Bradshaw's books about Toxic Shame, based on a topic you had in another video. It is helping a lot with unpacking triggers of mine
I cried when l watched this be of your videos for the first time, everything you said felt like it was a description of my childhood. The shame is all consuming. I am determined to start to heal for 2023.
Thank you for this list, Patrick. I needed something like this. I also LOVE the Hawaiian shirt and the way you always end your videos: "may you be filled with love and kindness, may you be well, may you be peaceful and at ease, may you be joyous. Take care, guys." So soothing :)
I was in a validation family systems group therapy in the 80s. We were given the chance to do some volunteer work on our local PBS channel for a fundraiser. So I won a weekend workshop with John Bradshaw, it was such a rewarding experience. Thank you so much for these book suggestions, I will look for them.🦋
for some reason, everyone recommended the body keeps score but i found it really triggering and it honestly made me feel 100 times more hopeless and sad about my circumstance. I really enjoyed Pete Walker's COMPLEX PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving like SOOOOOO much more. It really helped me. While exploring your website, I saw your recommendation for psychotheapeutic reiki, and bought it immediately. As a reiki master looking to support postpartum mamas who might be suffering birth trauma, I love this book! And I adore Julia Cameron. I have so many of her books.
My personal favourite is The Betrayal Bond by Dr. Patrick Carnes. ♥️ The kindness it offers is quite commendable. A major stepping stone in my healing journey. It answers so many questions and it feels like we are being heard profoundly.
My favs: "Road Less Travelled" by M Scott Peck and "Boundaries" by Henry Cloud and Scott Townsend Read both 20+ years ago and still fresh as an album that dropped yesterday.
I started reading psychology books in 9th grade to try to figure me out. I came to realize that I wasn't the one with problems - well - my mother was my problem. At 65 years of age, I'm still learning about my childhood needs that were not met, but learning that I (and my animals) can supply the love I need.
I've never actually read a self help book. However I loved reading Lord of the Rings, apart from the fact it's pure escapism. It's also a tale of friendship, loyalty and valuing others.

You are amazing! I also found reiki on my healing journey. I would also recommend Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find--and Keep-- Love. To find a partner with a secure attachment was incredibly healing for me and I really needed the help to escape from the cycle of trauma bonds and to understand what secure attachment looks like.
Is there anyway you could do a mock family session? So maybe we could get a good idea of how an actual session of family therapy works? I think the word therapy can be scary, especially for families struggling. I would like my older children involved but everyone kind of laughs and I think we just don’t know what to really expect? Watching a session and having it explained might help a family like mine debating therapy but that has doubts.
I love how these are all action books with tools. More books about the wounds from childhood: "The Emotionally Absent Mother" "Motherless Daughters" "Reconciliation healing the inner child"
I'm very grateful for your mention, well, of all the books you've mentioned, but you've taken my healing to a place I couldn't imagine in sharing John Bradshaw's work and now Healthy Parenting by Janet Woititz. Boy did this come in right.on.time. And I'm no skimper on healing my CPTSD. There is nothing more daunting for an adult child than loving your own actual child and grappling with not having a gauge/role models on parenting and healthy boundaries. I've just chosen to homeschool, and realize my biggest hold-off was a confusing feeling of "He's better at school than spending too much time with me." for reasons explained in this book... I think Healthy Parenting might just by my bed, for a long time. Velcro on your cape this weekend! You just saved the day!
Did the Artists Way years ago and found it to be very helpful and life changing. I like Pete Walker's book "From Surviving to Thriving". Just about anything by Gabor Mate is good. He's all over youtube so easy to get an idea of his work. I love my ACA 12 step big red book. There are many more. It's nice to start a little library of books that you can read when you need inspiration or to remind yourself that self love is your goal.
Question. How many of these books are available on audio books? I have sight loss, and it's better for me to now listen and absorb things rather than by reading. Thank you for any responses...
If you use the Open Library/ Internet Archive, it has No One is to Blame with narration for people with disabilities. You have to reach out to them to be qualified as someone who is allowed to download the narration based on disability. Good luck!
Thank you for the religious content warning for Margaret Paul, while i believe it is a good book i will not be reading it due to my religious traumas and i almost bought this book.
Thank you so much, sir! Already started reading (or hearing if you will) Way of the artist! I know the first may sound a we bit cheesy but two books that changed my life 1. The Subtle Art of not Giving a F*ck - Mark Manson 2. Your Erroneous Zones - Wayne Dyer
Looks like I've got some more reading to do 📚 🤓 🥰. I also love the "blessing" you say at the end of the video. It's so strange for me, but hearing you say it, fills me with a sense of peace, every time . Thanks again for a great video and the resources 💛
The artists way when I was 26, half my life now, was when I realized I had distinction. I was an artist young and shut down after high school, probably when my mom asked us to move out . I agree it's quite helpful
Patrick, I wish I found this channel sooner in my life. I didn’t come from poverty and I see now, that having living needs isn’t enough. My pos parents boast about how effective shame was in correcting my behavior, grades, sport successes. Once I moved out, I went straight into ‘supported poverty’ where the power, control and manipulation took an even deeper root.
Just watching this now, I know it's 3 mos old but Patrick, what is "process addiction"? My ears perked up when u said "she might have you stop doing your coping thing for a week- like Netflix." I always knew I kept the tv on in the background at home as a coping thing but the idea that this would be something that would be beneficial NOT to do, is completely new for me. If you have time to explain this a little more I'd appreciate it so much! It's around the 9:50 mark. And I'm already looking for these books on Audible 😊 thx Dr P.
Unpopular opinion here but I'm glad you didn't mention "the body keeps the score"....maybe I didn't read it slowly enough but I was left missing after finishing it.... it's not enough to know the effect on the body, we need to know the how on how to heal.
The book said that evidence showed yoga and meditation and biofeedback had positive affects on people’s CPTSD and other trauma issues. Those are just a few I can remember.
@@Star-dj1kw thanks for the reply! Those are vast realms in themselves...I personally need more step by step instruction. Hold my hand and walk me through this! To each their own 🤗
Thank you for your guidance Patrick I haven't read any of those books, but a few of them grabbed my attention. I got curious about another book you recommended in a previous video "Self Parenting" of J. Pollard. I thought that I could hear more about it in this video...I haven't purchased it yet, because I have planned to read 4other books before getting this one, unless I change my mind by then... Could you tell us more about it please? I only got the jist that it is having a half an hour exercise every morning about parenting your inner child. Am I correct? I am not sure how easy would be to find extra half an hour in the morning as a working parent...
Please be careful with how you bring Reiki into your life. My mom is a severe childhood abuse survivor, and a lot of it was unresolved while raising us, though she tried her hardest. Reiki was also where she started to turn things around, left my toxic dad. The problem is she went so hard down the spiritual path that it became an escape rather than a tool, and she felt more distant. Example, I was a shy teenager looking for advice to make friends, and her answer was to channel a spirit when i needed a mom. She did a lot of major work on herself, but believes her empathy IS a super power, and that she knows what everyone is thinking and feeling at any given moment in a way that's made it hard for me to express myself if it's different from what she believes. Also, I will never knock reiki, but i will knock the egoists who entered her life and took a lot of money in the name of spirituality.
I'm so sorry you experienced that! < : - ( I lived for several years as an adult in a town with a lot of new age seekers, and witnessed some appalling acts of child neglect and greed cloaked in "spirituality." You're so right that it can be used as an escape or smokescreen for garden variety egotism. Wishing you well! : - ) ❤
I just got the rebecca c Mandeville book about scapegoats. I like it so far. I became really passive too but I see why, my family has completely overtly rejected me for asking them to stop labelling me. On the look out for more supportive books.
Patrick, thank you for what you’re doing. I take your recommendations seriously. I’m having a hard time finding Bob Hoffman’s book, “No One is to Blame”. Do you have a recommended source for purchasing the book?
That was a useful list of books. And on Julia Cameron's note, I will stop watching RUclips videos for a week because they are my fix. Not going to be easy but of late watching and scrolling way too much. 👍
I wonder at all the people saying The Artist's Way changed their lives. I did the excecises dilligently and even did an extra year of morning pages and still it did nothing for me. It did teach me that I could actually write a book slowly if I wanted because I had reems of morning pages after several years. But I honestly can't say it had much impact on my life, if any. Maybe I did it at the wrong time/stage of life?
A book that changed my trajectory in a great way was IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ME by Claudia Black, about alcoholic families. I actually don't remember too well WHAT it's about, but something about really messed up families. I might not have been watching this video tonight, perhaps otherwise.
I read a really helpful book recently called happy not perfect by poppy jamie! I'm not usually a fan of self help books, but I really really enjoyed this one. I've noticed a lot of changes in myself since I started following the advice in it-- like, actual, tangible improvements in my mental health within a few days of starting it I 100% recommend!
I was let down by The Artists Way on the whole after everyone talked it up…but I do morning pages still and I have “adventure” days instead of artist dates.
I’m in grad school for counseling and bc of my own experiences want to focus on trauma-informed existential therapy including some gestalt, CBT and ACT techniques. Any familiarity with some books you liked that involve these therapies by any chance?
Thanks so much. There's also work by Shahida Arabi and Pete Walker that I am looking at... I also appreciate your sensitivity to cultural nuances and it is not as straight forward as it might seem. More work needs to be done here I believe.

If you use the Open Library/ Internet Archive, it has No One is to Blame with narration for people with disabilities. You have to reach out to them to be qualified as someone who is allowed to download the narration based on disability. Good luck!
So happy to be reminded to reconnect with the Artists Way…..looking forward to exploring the other titles. Thank you Patrick for all your work ❤️
Definitely planning to follow up on the artist one. Thanks Patrick!
Thank you so much for all the work you share ❤️ it has been extremely helpful and soothing in this phase of my healing journey.
Thank you for the religious content warning for Margaret Paul, while i believe it is a good book i will not be reading it due to my religious traumas and i almost bought this book.
Thank you for all the recommended books 📚😊
Appreciate your notes. Very considerate and thoughtful ❤
11:11 it’s a sign! My first time learning about you so this is serendipitous 👍🏽
So happy to see this!!! 💕
Thank you so much, sir! Already started reading (or hearing if you will) Way of the artist!
I know the first may sound a we bit cheesy but two books that changed my life
1. The Subtle Art of not Giving a F*ck - Mark Manson
I believe it's h'oponopono or however you spell it
I recommend ‘King, Warrior, Magician, Lover’ as well
The artists way when I was 26, half my life now, was when I realized I had distinction.
Wow thank you. How can i find out more people in San Francisco who work or specialise in trauma either providing therapy or group work?
Jay Reid has a channel and he is in the Bay area.
Thank you for the fantastic book recommendations.
Is there possibly a part 2 coming?
To each their own 🤗
Actually quite a few people in these comments have said that! I'm thinking of getting Pete Walker's book instead.
Thanks for the video. I'm so excited to read some of your recommendations ☺
Thanks for the recommendations, wil definitely check these out! ❤️🙏🏼
Great 👍 Books 📚!!
Women who love too much by Robin Norwood changed my life.
I read a really helpful book recently called happy not perfect by poppy jamie! I'm not usually a fan of self help books, but I really really enjoyed this one. I've noticed a lot of changes in myself since I started following the advice in it-- like, actual, tangible improvements in my mental health within a few days of starting it
I 100% recommend!
Thank you so much for this❤️❤️❤️
It's 11 minutes and 11 seconds long 🥺
eleven eleven!!!! (i saw that too)
I was let down by The Artists Way on the whole after everyone talked it up…but I do morning pages still and I have “adventure” days instead of artist dates.
Maybe, Audible (books) would be a great partner for you. 🤷♀️
Bradshaw on the Family changed my life. Also, Whitfield’s books and Golumb’s The Narcissist in the Mirror
Thanks!
I love your shirt! 🙂👍
