"Slytherins are evil"
Dude, this guy's a sweetheart
I think a lot of people forget that many of the reputations of the various houses come from the ideals of the various founders, as well as years of bias and prejudice caused by a sort of confirmation bias on the part of the Wizarding World. The Sorting Hat placed you into the House that you had the *potential* to most closely align with what either Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin valued most in a magic user. Whether the individual in question actually *realized* said traits was left up to the individual's temperament, choices and experiences.
Slytherins especially get a bad rap, because they value "resourcefulness, cunning, ambition, self-preservation, fraternity and cleverness". Some people see these traits as cowardly and underhanded, but you could also call Slytherin House that of the *survivors*. They will do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING necessary to live through whatever situation they find themselves in. Contrast that with (for example) a Gryffindor, who would be expected to throw his/her life away in some potentially suicidal show of bravery.
Slughorn may be self interested and not always willing to put his neck on the line, but he's not a bad guy at all. There's absolutely nothing wrong with not wanting to die, especially if you are already an old man. I could sympathize with him.
Oh, I just love Slughorn, poor man.
Yeah, the sorting hat glitches out sometimes. The programmers aren't sure what's up with the hat, but I'm sure they'll figure it out.
I wish that was focused on more instead of Good Gryffindors and Phoneix members fighting evil Slytherins and Death Eaters.
And then those muggles came home and wondered why one of their magazines had mysteriously disappeared.
andyandnormski they probably think a thief with exquisite tastes took it :)

He just used Reparo Maxima lol still cool though

Thalamus facts or fax
To me, he’s not trying to be offensive about muggleborns. Just think, pure and half bloods have been exposed to magic their entire lives while muggleborns have only been exposed since eleven years old. That in my opinion is why it is amazing to him.
That's what I thought. It's just like Harry and Quidditch. For someone who didn't even know what Quidditch was before coming to Hogwarts, he was bloody fantastic and surpassed those who had grown up with the game. That's obviously similar to what Slughorn meant with Lily.
When he was a student he made friends with muggleborns
Of course that's what he meant, half bloods get awfully triggered
Kevin Zhang Considering the times, how he'd never met Slughorn, and the ambiguous nature in which he said it, you can't blame Harry for taking it the wrong way.

Dumbledore's a genius... he knew by saying "Well, you're like my friend Mr. Potter here, one of a kind" that he could convince Horcace to return to Hogwarts
+Joey That was a very obvious manipulation. I would be much more impressed if he did something much more subtle that convinced him, like hexing him in the ruckus of things clittering and clattering.
Joey It was Harry who convinced him to return in the book. Something about all the proffesors there being under great protection and stuff.

See this is why I love Slughorn. Because he is a paragon of being Slytherin. I was reading a post not long ago talking about why he's so great so a good portion of this isn't mine, fair warning. But, Slughorn is just...SO Slytherin. Why? Because he is cunning, but he's cunning with kindness. There's nothing wrong with being a Slytherin and being a genuinely good person. Horace has it down to an ART, though. Why? Simple. He's ambitious, for sure, else he wouldn't have taught and gotten reputation for such great students. Additionally, he's definitely a leader, no one doubts that, but...he can get anyone to do damn near anything he wants. "Always takes my posts when I have a comment about the day" or "Free tickets whenever I want". Just think about how purely Slytherin that is. He can get anything and everything he wants just because he was such a great guy and now he rests on his laurels getting free stuff and free services because everyone was his student. Or how his reputation had him shoot up back to Head of Slytherin after being gone for so many years. It's so easy to get everything you want when people WANT to give it to you. None of this machiavellian scheming like some of my fellow Slytherins try to do. Just being a kind-hearted and genuine person (or at least appearing to be...) and then sitting back and letting your investment unfold. THAT is why I love Slughorn so much.
Well said 👏👏👏
Michael Libby I absolutely love this comment!!!
A A Even then. He was one of the slytherins that fought in the battle of hogwarts to defend the school from voldemort.
the thing about slytherin is that none of the traits that hogwarts uses to judge slytherins are inherently bad. they're just more tricky to manage than the other three, particularly hufflepuff. cunning and ambition are great assets if you're on the right side, but they're slippery, because if you're cunning but also wrong, you suddenly turn evil. horace does the smart thing and only applies his cunning in small ways, that's why he can send a letter to the daily prophet and always get a response, because cunningly, he cultivated a relationship with his students.
if you went back through history, i'm willing to bet that most famous world leaders would have been slytherin.
👏👏👏
Harry should have done that to the Hogwarts castle after Voldemort was defeated but instead, he snaps the Elder wand and let Filch do the cleaning. What a prick.
HAHAHAHA Never thought of that!
But filch is a prick.
same as mine. what a shame they didnt
Actually hogwarts is charmed to fix itself.
It wasn't the Elder Wand that made that powerful spell possible -- it was Dumbledore's juggernaut genius status as a wizard.
"So, you ruined my date with a pretty girl just so you could have me lure a teacher I don't even know back to his old job?"

When Slughorn begins talking about Sirius it breaks my heart looking at Harry.
"I do love knitting patterns!" Me too, Dumbledore! Me too!
Harry: *Looks at the cover of the magazine Dumbledore's holding and fights a smirk*
'Lilly, lovely Lilly' gets me everytime!
I love professors like him. So sweet and kind to students, and gets their love in return.
The fact that Slughorn mentioned Regulus warms my heart.
I love Dumbledore, but this scene shows how Machiavellian he could be. Dumbledore got Slughorn to do what he wanted by dangling Harry in front of him, moving him like a piece on a chessboard.
Jack Opple he would have made a great Slytherin.
He did what he had to do in order to get his memory. Even if it meant offering up Harry as bait.
also by dangling his ring while showing the magazine
He was doing it to save everyone, including Harry. Or maybe he should have just let Slughorn keep his memory to himself and allow the wizarding world to perish under Voldemort?
Yeah, Dumbledore can be manipulative on some occasions
Jim Broadbent absolutely steals every scene he's in. Alan Rickman is a strong second, but Prof. Slughorn is a joy to watch.
Rickman second? How dare you! 😉

I thought it was humorous how he talked about deatheaters trying to recruit him like they're jehovah's witnesses.
Wait wait wait!
I think your are being just a little bit harsh to them, I mean they could be insufferable, and intolerant, and want to extend over the whole world, But to compare them to Jehovah witnesses it's just a disgustingly mean insult to the deatheaters.
"If you can spare us an hour of your time Sir, we'd like to talk to you about our lord and savior Lord Voldemort and the importance of purebloods."
The Jehovah’s witnesses are okay it’s The people in Utah
Dumbledore cockblocked Harry, then proceeded to compliment the girl and remind him they won't be coming back.

@@spidermanfan2341 i think he did recognize Snape's love for Lily. And use it as a weapon to defeat Voldemort. Just like how he himself lose Arianna and defeated his own best friend/love..
Slug horn may have been a little spacey, but he's so sweet
I think Slughorn’s line about Lily’s talent being impressive especially since she was ‘Muggle Born’ could come across like he’s prejudiced, but I think he means it in a different way. He probably considered it especially surprising seeing as Muggle Borns normally probably come into the Wizarding world totally shocked and somewhat out of their depth, not knowing anything about the world they’re stepping into- not every Muggle Born is a Hermione- whereas children born into Wizarding families are already somewhat familiar with the subjects they’re learning
It is never truly told what limits there are to magic in the Harry Potter universe but spells like this makes me wonder why there are any problems at all
John Gunnerek That's because wizards deal with magical problems, not muggle problems. E.g. there is dark magic and magical diseases.
The reason why it took them so long to clean his house is because.
1. The order needed the kids out of the way and they needed them to have something to do while the stayed there.
2. The kids are not allowed to use magic outside of Hogwarts under the age of 17.
3. Some of the creatures living there required special sprays and other things.
Well not everyone can pull off every spell.
I think students can use the spell just, not to the extent that Dumbledore did.
Right
I absolutely LOVED this entire scene! Every bit of it - Dumbledore fixing the room, Slughorn being Slughorn, Slughorn taking the bait, Dumbledore explaining things to Harry, Dumbledore mentioning the appearance of Harry's date and why Harry can't attend her tomorrow and How the scene ended. Beautiful!
"well that was fun" :)
People say Gambon isn't like the book Dumbledore but he definitely gets the calm whimsy of his character perfectly here
I loved gambon Dumbledore. He was very cheeky
HARRY! DIDJA PUTCHA NAME INDA GOBLET OF FIYAH?!?!
He slowly got better at it. in 3 and 4 he was pretty bad at it
He portrayed Dumbledore the best in this movie
He's a perfect Dumbledore. I didn't like Richard Harris as Dumbledore. Too quiet and low key.
That use of Reparo is quite impressive. The way Dumbledore just effortlessly restores the entire room (and probably the whole house) is fascinating. Were I to pick about seven go-to spells to use at a moment’s notice, this would be one. Two others would be Petrificus Totalus and Expecto Patronum.
Just curious: why would you use wish to use Expecto Patronum? Its only two functions are to repel Dementors and send messages; but we fortunately have no soul-suckers to deal with, and texting or calling is much faster than a Patronus.
Slughorn has always been my favorite professor.

Add this scene to the list that makes the HBP my favorite movie from this series. Harry seeing the beauty in magic once again when just out side that room is darkness, sadness, and death.
Also Harry has struggled with cleaning his room with out magic and here he sees how useful magic is. His expression just says "I love magic" like he once said so many years ago.
Lord knows I can use that spell for my own house, let alone my room. ^.^
When you can have your whole place clean with just a wave of your wand, you wonder why there are problems in the magical world anyway.
***** Literally, I need this spell.
+FreedomWriter3 Most wizards and witches aren't really good with magic. They learn what they need to and then gratuade. After that they often don't bother to train themselves in more useful magic stuff, just enough to make a living and all. "I'm not antimuggle, but...."
Thomas Martin He’s not prejudiced, but he is a little elitist and enjoys the finer things in life. He just need to check his privilege.
I think what he meant was that as a Muggle-born, Lily didn't have the advantage of being taught magic by her parents before school. I guess she was like Hermione. As soon as she learned she was a witch, she studied hard to make up for her first eleven years living without knowledge of magic.

How does everyone know lily’s eye color
Well Not Everybody Knows Lily's Eye Colour..Only Her Close Friends Know It..
Lily’s eyes-and Harry’s-was a running theme throughout the series. Rowling even hinted it was important before the last book debuted. Also why Snape’s dying comment about it to Harry was so special.
They knew her
Thinking about it, yes, I suppose it is rather strange. But I guess in comparison to his whole look looking like James, his eyes are from her. What I find weird is that...well, that's kind of how everyone in the world is, a mix of their father and mother. But Harry being famous, his parents being dead, people like to reminisce. But also probably due to the color itself-a vibrant hue of bright green must be really unique and colorful. If it were brown, I bet people wouldn't mention it as much, but green is rare, especially with dark hair.

Dumbledore: “Horace? Mind if I take this? I do like knitting patterns!”
And Hagrid always said “Great Man, Dumbledore”
And back in 5th year, Kingsley Shacklebolt said “Well Dumbledore got style”

If I'm not mistaken, this is the last time in the series where Harry witnesses something magical happens and just kinda smiles as it happens in front of him.

The scene where the house is getting put back together is so satisfying I don’t know why
You know you've started reaching adulthood when Dumbledore cleaning the room is so satisfying
The whole rebuilding bit is excellent with surround sound.
The way he says bye bye Horace gets me every time 😂😂😂
Why does Harry always look like he's seeing magic for the first time whenever a more powerful wizard does something
+MKRocker94 You don't often see "outstanding" magic like this every day. Didn't Harry say something like: You see a 'great wizard' and he waves with his wand and screams spell after spell with lots of sparks and light. Then you got a man like Dumbledore who merely makes one small gesture and, in silence, makes more happen than this 'great wizard' could with all his light and sparks. That is when you realise that noise and light is more often a sign of incompetence than real skill.
+Zajin13 Rowling's narration in Book 6 says this, as Dumbledore is investigating the entrance to the Locket horcrux in the underground lake.
One of the best magical scenes in the series. :)
