It’s both sad and poignant; it brings out the drama of the scene. Slughorn is ashamed, reluctant to give over his memory, and Harry is being strong for him, encouraging him to not hide it and face what he is afraid of, eventually leading to the most critical scene in the whole series of learning Voldemort’s secret!

    I think Slughorn is one of the few faculty members who really seemed more like a teacher than a hero/villain. You can really tell how much he loves being around these children. He has the Slytherin ambition, which can come off as self-serving at times, but you can see how much joy and pain it's brought him to influence children for good and bad. He loves these kids and wants to instill passion in them, and when he saw that passion for magic/potions used to do harm, it crushed him.

He was like the guy who hated school and it's teachings and just wanted to get out of there to do his thing, since he was just good at learning Reality, since in the end that's what you gotta do in Life, Learning your Reality and Act Strong with it. Anyways, being Manipulative, Secretive and a Good Actor doesn't make you Evil... but those are things that Good People or Morals People don't like. My favorite part about this scene is when Slughorn is describing the petal transforming into a fish.
    “It was beautiful magic...wondrous to behold...” for me this exemplifies the true nature of Slytherin. Book readers will know that Slughorn in addition to being a Slytherin was also Head of Slytherin House when he was a teacher. He’s often a lot of people’s go to for Slytherin done right, as he was one of the few who despite being somewhat cunning and ambitious, decided to stand against the dark lord when it came down to it. For me this scene shows that he embodies the quintessential trait necessary to being a Slytherin. Now obviously there are many factors that go into being sorted into a given house, but most of the time it boils down to a single trait. Bravery, Wisdom, Loyalty, and for Slytherin? Most would probably say Ambition, but I would say it’s Passion. An absolute love for Magic in all it’s forms. That’s why I love this seen, because it shows that. A Slytherin marveling at a cute little spell. So simple, yet so beautiful. It shows that Magic isn’t simply a tool for him to get ahead in life, for him it is his life. It’s his everything.

    This was a beautiful scene. It was better than it was in the books. In fact I think the film made Slughorn a far more interesting and likeable character.
    Slughorn asked Hagrid if he could get some of Aragogs venom in the movie, but in the book he did it sneakily. He came across as just money hungry. And even when he made his confession to Harry, it was because he was drunk and Harry knew he wouldn't remember that in the morning.

    • @aeris44
      @aeris44 9 лет назад +38

      Oh my god I love all you guys in this comment right now. HBP and PoA are by far the most beautiful of the films with Order of the phoenix and DH pt. 1 close behind. It was able to get deeper into certain characters that we didn't get to see in the book mainly cuz it's from Harry's perspective. We got Slughorn, growth between Hermione and Ron, but more importantly we see the internal struggle of Draco and his fight with light and darkness (the white and black birds) which then reflects the Malfoy family as a whole, not to mention how much more badass Narcissa was in the films unlike how much of a crybaby she was in the books.
      The emotional struggles of the characters in the film along with the score, acting, mood and directorial choices make this film so amazing but at the same time so under-appreciated since it excluded certain scenes. Unfortunately many fans only use comparisons as a base for their judgments. But I'm glad there are intellectual fans like you guys that are able to see it in its medium, a film.

    • @TheLanimation
      @TheLanimation 9 лет назад +18

      I'd also like to add (since I'm currently rereading this part in the book) that Malfoy's internal struggle is so fleshed out in the film. He's just seen, from Harry's pov, as the usual bully from the past years, just sneakier. Another thing I like about this film is it just quickly glazed over the annoying love triangle with Ron, Lavender, and Hermione. Those arguments along with the fact that Ron only moaned Hermione's name in his sleep and then was glossed over was what irked me about the book. The film actually confirmed it was Hermione he said! But yes, Slughorn, Malfoy, and Ron were all made ten times more interesting on film.

    Slunhorn was no fool, an accomplished wizard, a potions master, and professor. He might have gotten drunk in celebration of him getting a lot of loot from that night, and a funeral. But when he says "I know why you are here." Even in that state he realized Harry had taken the liquid luck potion, the potion he made, and was trying to get info out of him. He still tried to resist. The fact that he cups his hands like a "bowl" as Slughorn was shaking while putting his memory into a test tube, was literally one of the highlights of this film.

    I love this scene because it shows that being sorted into a certain House doesn't dictate your personality. Here we have Slughorn, a Slytherin who shows a level of bravery that a lot of Gryffindors wouldn't be capable of. A lot of people look at this scene they ask "Oh why does Slughorn cares about his image so much? If he has the secret to Voldemort's immortality than he should just give it up." These people really don't understand the predicament Slughorn is in. Think about it, if word got out that Slughorn was the one who gave Voldemort the key to immortality than it wouldn't just "ruin his image". Slughorn would get hunted down and lynched by a mob of witches and wizards who have lost their loved ones to Voldemort. By giving this secret to Harry, Slughorn is literally putting not just his career but his life on the line just to ensure Voldemort gets killed. He quite literally puts his ambitions and thirst for fame aside for the sake of a silent contribution to the greater cause. That's something to be commended.

    A lot of people are pointing out lines from this scene. The line that stands out the most to me is during the story about the fish when he simply says “it was beautiful magic...wondrous to behold...”
    The reason this stands out to me is that it demonstrates that despite being often crudely ambitious, there’s still a part of Slughorn that deep down is still the little boy who fell in love with the magical world, and can appreciate the beauty in the small things. Book readers will know that Slughorn was originally head of Slytherin house, and he’s a lot of people’s example of a Slytherin done right. This scene exemplifies this to me. Unlike other Slytherin’s, unlike Voldemort and his followers who seem to disdain any kind of weakness, only love themselves, and crave power, Slughorn shows you can balance a desire for glory with a love for small things that may not add to your strength, but can instead refresh your spirit, and bring you joy.
