    I have been gaslit SO MUCH in healthcare I've been afraid to ask for an assessment. I have a video appointment next week with my primary care doctor to see if she will or can refer me for an actual assessment. I sent in 3 self assessments for her to review since I won't be seeing her in person. Fingers crossed she hears me and takes me serious. 🤞🏻

    This is the most relatable thing I have ever seen on RUclips.

    Something to remember is that even if you were told that you weren't autistic. If you are really comfortable in the autism community you were either misdiagnosed or you might be neurodivergent in some other way. So either way you are neurodivergent and belong in the community.

      In my opinion!

    I was so nervous about my autism assessment that when I got to the appointment I could barely speak. I am glad that they told me at the end of appointment that they were diagnosing me with autism because waiting to find out would have been awful.

      I was so anxious beforehand I felt sick and actually considered cancelling the appointment. But I am glad that I didn't.

    I'm in a similar situation and Katja is well prepared with the binders, I'll try and write things down because I've faced struggles when it comes to talking about my experiences to health care professionals. This is a great reaction video Thomas! I get a lot of support from it too.

    I was first misdiagnosed with schizoid personality disorder but I was told I had some autism. It was just a bad assessment. So I looked and searched for someone else. I was diagnosed with autism, adhd, intellectual disability, bullemia, anxiety, language disorder. Keep searching and if you have autism than you will get a diagnosis. No matter how long

    Just FYI, the plural of diagnosis is diagnoses (pron. diagnoseez)

    21:05 "In my research only 3% of people who go in for late diagnosis are not diagnosed with ASD"
    does anyone have a citation for this? I am also waiting for my final assessment, having had some initial evaluations, and would love to read sources on this if they are available. I guess I could ask Katja directly if I don't get a reply here.

    I feel this so much, I'm still waiting but had a full breakdown while analysing my life, it was similar to the end of interstellar when he saw his entire life unfold.

    I've got my first appointment coming up on May 9th hopefully if I can get all the financial crap taken care of. I've been trying to get this assessment since 2011 because of our garbage healthcare system. I've been exploring this with my therapist for a long time, but I need to have a legal diagnosis so I can have accommodations in college. I'm really pcared because when I realized I was autistic I was relieved because I've been ashamed of the struggles I've had, and I've always felt like I was worthless and stupid. It was a relief to find out that my struggles were because of a disability. If it turns out I'm not autistic, that means either it's a worse disorder than that, or else I just suck at life, and I really am just a stupid, lazy, selfish idiot who just can't get her crap together. Oops, I was trying to type scared, but it won't let me edit.

    I can so much relate! I waited for my assessment for more than a year. At the first meeting everything pointed very much to autism. Now I am waiting for the result. I am feeling so bad, just like she describes how she felt before the assessment. Even if it was so clear I still have so much insecurity. It feels bad to wait such a long time with so much anxiety.

    I know how she felt. I knew that self-diagnosis was legitimate, but I needed the affirmation for myself so I could know that I could stop searching for answers. It lifted a weight - and added some more.

    Remember everyone if you don't get the answers you were looking for with your diagnosis it's always an option to get a second opinion!

    How do you tell a 9 year old they are being tested for autisum?

    • @misspat7555
      @misspat7555 6 месяцев назад +1

      A good start is to tell them that they will be given some tests and talk to people to see what they can and can’t do; that no one will be upset that there are things they can’t do, and the question is just what they may need some help with, and what they DON’T need help with. If they ask more pointed questions, you can ask if they have heard of “autism” or “being autistic” and what they have heard about it. They may have never heard of it; they may have heard wildly wrong or incomplete information about it. It can be explained simply as “trouble understanding others and being understood, even though you can all hear eachother fine.”, and also, possibly, “trouble learning in school as others do; starting and finishing work you need to do; controlling your body, for example, in gym class; having your five senses be too strong or, sometimes, not strong enough; and so on. This is why it will take a while and there will be multiple tests and talking; because there are a lot of possible parts to autism. As with anything, assure the kid that you love them no matter what any test says and you just want to know how best to help them do well in life. ❤️
