Barn Find Rescue | Field Find Reveals!

  • In this episode, Elton and Claire return to the epic field find featured in last week's video. We reveal the 'mystery car' as well as the Fiat 126 we found in the hedge next door!
    However, as is often the case with UK Barn Finds, this is not going to be a straight forward job. A very sunken and very rotten 1971 Morris Van needs to be moved, along with a 1984 Volkswagen Scirocco in order to access the cars. Neither car has been moved for some time, the Morris Van has been slumbering in it's spot since 1985!
    00:00 Intro
    00:49 Moving the 1971 Morris Van
    06:56 Moving the 1984 Volkswagen Scirocco
    11:43 Revealing The Mystery Car
    18:08 Revealing The 1988 Fiat 126
    Armed with a winch and our trusty Land Rover Defender, what could possibly go wrong? And will we find any more surprises along the way? You'll just have to watch to find out....

A car ran into the back of him in it at lights and wrote off the other drivers car, there's a thick crash bar behind the rear panel on that, it was only slightly bent. It ploughed on for years that thing. Loved it. Very comfortable

    Elton what a great job clearing that space. Claire great camera work. If you have a second large 4wd get yourself a pully block that allows you to change directions. The second vehicle becomes an anchor point. Even a decent tree or post can be enough for the redirection. Anyway awesome video. Have a good week. Marc from Australia 🇦🇺

    • @UKBarnFinds
      @UKBarnFinds  24 дня назад +1

      Thank you. I’ll be watching some videos on how to use a pulley/snatch block effectively. Every day has been a school day on this job. What I have found, since filming this part, is that a very short winch length is better for tight spaces when using just the Land Rover alone. A lot of manoeuvring, but the car being towed does go where I want it then. A long winch length allows it to go of course too easily. All good fun though. Thanks again, both for watching and the advice. I really appreciate it. ~ Elton

    Honestly, that's almost got to feel a little like unwrapping presents at Christmas, although if it took a strimmer, hedge trimmers, a big pair of shears and a reciprocating saw to get into the average present, I don't think Christmas would be quite so popular!
    How that Moggy van stayed together (well, mostly) for 10 feet, let alone the 100 or more that it was pulled, I have no idea! The moths were definitely holding hands real tight to make sure their shelter didn't just disintegrate spectacularly into a huge puff of ferrous oxide dust and a few panels.... That Scirocco's bodywork looks absolutely brilliant from what I could see of it. Maybe we should ask Elton to lift them up so we can see the underside too......if it's not too much trouble! Anything for RUclips, eh?😂😂
    How that little Suzuki Swift hadn't rotted badly is beyond me, although the Fiat 126 seems to showcase what I thought they'd all look like after sitting in the hedge for 20+ years. Glad it's not the case for all of them. The Swift, like the Scirocco, looks like it could have been parked there yesterday.
    I'll wager that the one in the bush is an early (maybe mid-) 80s Subaru.....if I've picked the wheels correctly.....although the doors don't look as rotten....er.....as curved as I would expect. I'd love to see one of THEM preserved by the brambles because I understand there aren't so many left over there. Whatever it is looks to be from the 80s with those door mouldings and of Japanese lineage with the wheels anyway....time will tell, eh?
    All the best - and thanks for your tireless efforts and braving the weather to bring us this footage, Claire. You camera people are the unsung heroes of this type of video and my hat is off to you. Bringing Elton along for comic relief was a stroke of genius too! (Seriously - sorry Elton!! You're doing a much better job and with way more stamina than I could muster to clear that lot out, mate! Your dedication to the cause is certainly appreciated from my armchair - and no, there's no way I could do the job any better without hiring someone to do it for me......and as for moving stuff about - at least you've got the Landy and a winch. Imagine me trying to pull things out of there with a Triumph Stag or a Mazda 3 saloon and a tow-rope!)

    I think the mystery car is another Volkswagen of some kind. What an incredible treasure trove of cars, even in the condition they are in. The Suzuki Swift is excellent, not often talked about on RUclips. They were incredibly popular in Australia, being sold as the Suzuki Swift and also re-badged as a Holden Barina, excellent little cars. The Swift GTi was a little pocket rocket. Top marks again to you two for bringing us this video. Elton did very well and I'm sure the discomfort was made up for by the fun of wrangling of power tools 😄 👍

    In the early 70's I knew a field like this in Hampshire but in those days it was all 50's cars. Sadly it was cleared to make way for a housing estate. As a student I had no space or money to do a restoration, but I could have had a Triumph Roadster 1800 complete with dickey seat for 150 GBP.

    Oh I wish I was in the UK right now. Granted we still do not know the condition of the engine or the underside. But that Sirocco looks a great find. What is ironic is after I brought my sirocco I got a VW mechanic mate to look it over. Other than a few minor issues, he found that the previous owner had damaged one of the alloys. On the surface it looked good, but when he took it off he found it was cracked on the internal faces and the previous owner had just put an inner tube in. The alloy was the same style as the ones on your three wheeled sirocco. Then I met a beautiful young lady who I had a relationship with for a while. Guess what she owned. An identical Fiat 126, minus the spot lights. As we lived a distance apart we had to meet half way a couple of times, (plus it was a great pub we would meet at). But when it got dark, I would have to drive in front of her all the way to her parents house. Because her headlights were about as much use as a chocolate tea pot. So seeing the two cars parked up like that brought back fond memories.

      @@UKBarnFinds It all gone belly up for me here in NZ, so I am coming home, but it could take another month or so. It would be great to know what the condition is underneath and the engine and a rough cost too get the sirocco back on the road. I would love another one as I am coming home on my own and don't have to worry about family anymore.

When we see something new, we just cant wait to find out, what it is (especially vehicles) so we go all tough and "bull in a china shop" ..If we cut ourselves or lose an arm or leg, well so be it...........GRRR!! I felt so sorry for the Moggie van. I drove one of these for the North Western Electricity Board back in 1970. My first car was a Morris 1000 traveler so seeing the wheels splayed was a bit saddening. although I did see a few moggies broken down with th esame problem including a police panda car. The lower part of the trunnion can seize and thats what you get.

    Elton is the only RUclipsr I have seen use a safety blanket on a winch cable .Last year a young woman here lost her life when a winch cable oin 4x4 parted and struck her in the chest killing her. If any of those who think the steel cable on their gear won't break ,they cdould be in for a surprise. ( I broke one once 40 years ago ,trying to pull a road grader out of mud . with a 25,000 Lb winch)

    • @UKBarnFinds
      @UKBarnFinds  24 дня назад

      That’s awful. Poor woman. I’ve always used a winch mat, or anything to hand that will potentially take the sting out it if it breaks free. After filming this, I watched a few youtube clips of people testing them and now use a heavy canvas army mat on top of the cable. Scared the living daylights out of me, seeing how fiercely they can fly back at you.
      I always make sure, also, that myself and anyone helping is positioned in a safe place. There are bound to be times when we’re not, as people move around, but I’d like to think this rule applies 99% of the time. Claire would confirm this; she was given a brief before she filmed about placement, not to step over the cable, etc. Can’t be too careful.
      That winch you were using must have been a beast 😳

      Back around 1970, two Fowler ploughing engines were dredging Earlswood lake, Surrey, and I was told that the cable kept parting. Fortunately, those doing the dredging knew what they were at and there were no casualties. I've also seen a cable that parted when a ship was under tow in the London docks and that did cause a fatality. Both cables were somewhat bigger than a 4x4 one.
