Good tip I use this test all the time. Some cars have an auxiliary vacuum assist pump that is driven by your cars engine. Engine oil can leak through a defective pump and travel from the vacuum line to the booster, thus filling the booster with engine oil instead of brake fluid.
Also, as brake pads wear the fluid levels go down. That's why if you top off on brake pads that need to be replaced, then replace the pads, the resivor will be overflowing.
I had that happen to my car; the previous owner must’ve constantly topped it off, because when I installed my carbon pads it left a puddle on my garage floor. 🙃
@@POTOK113 good luck with that. Only time I ever open a bleeder is if there is air in the system that needs bled, or if I am doing a fluid exchange. I never risk it.
@@mranonymous8979 Intake vacuum is connected to brake booster - master cylinder leaks brake fluid into brake booster, engine sucks it up, and smoke comes out of your exhaust.
I took my vacuum booster off my 97 f350 7.3 powerstroke permanently and my brakes are sooooo much better. It was a bit of work to install 97 f series (replaced by f450) hydro booster and master cylinder and the pedal from 94 f series as the booster attatches in different location
The brake fluid goes down as the brake pads wear. When you change your pads if you don't open the bleeder screws, remove the master cylinder cover and compress the brake cylinders your fluid will go back up.
If this happens, it means brake master cylinder went bad internally and leaked into the brake booster. Unfortunately if this happens both will need to be replaced. Just make sure you bleed the brake lines when you are done installing them.
This happened to me and also my brakes were tightening up as I drove around and back home. They be really tight so I thought I had that calipers. I replaced them same thing. My brakes was acting like calipers was locking up on the from fronts on my 06 Silverado. I changed both sides calipers rotors and lines keep doing it then i pull off master cylinder and it did this fill booster half full. So i sucked it out and put new master cylinder on and its still doing it so now im changing the booster full it fixes the problem
Just remove the two bolt's and look behind you will see it for sure not as fast as your way but it work's. P.s don't pull the line's until you see the leak .
WHAT DOES IT EFFECT IF IT DOES GO INTO THERE? SQUISHY BRAKES? I HAVE AN 07 GMC SIERRA CLASSIC THAT IS STILL RUNNING FINE AT 265K MILES BUT I HAVE TO TOP OFF THE BRAKE FLUID EVERY COUPLE MONTHS.
Worse case scenario (as it once happened to me) -- the rubber diaphragm inside the brake booster can perish/rot due to extended contact with the brake fluid, and when it perforates (typically when depressing brake pedal), you lose the power assist and the brake pedal feels like pushing a brick - guaranteed to increase driver pucker effect ; fix it before possibly getting caught out. Technically speaking, as the brake booster fills with fluid, you lose the vacuum capacity (think a booster unit half full of brake fluid ; I've come across this a few times in 50 years of turning tools), and the amount of power assistance decreases. Also worth noting, brake fluid reservoirs are typically designed to hold enough fluid to compensate for the increased brake piston capacity, as the brake pad/shoes wear down ~ your brake pads/shoes should wear out completely and be metal on metal, before the reservoir empties ~ in practice, by the time you see the brake fluid level in the reservoir getting down towards the low mark, it's time to inspect for brake pad/shoe wear. Don't forget to change your brake fluid every 2-3years m'kay =) @Oz Mechanics - neat trick ; I always used to just crack the nuts holding the master cylinder to the booster off a little bit, and pull up on the master cylinder while looking under it, and you'd see the run of fluid going down the booster face =)
How is that part called? I recently broke the tube that connects there since the cold and I don’t know how to find it online :/ can you help me please? Fiat 500 sport 2012 owner
The short end is he needs a new brake booster and either rebuild or replace the master cylinder. The pedal in most cars and light trucks use vacuum assistance via the brake booster. It provides mechanical power by using vacuum created from the engine to pull a diaphragm in the big cylinder. The other side of the diaphragm is open to the air. Atmospheric pressure 15psi absolute pushes over a large surface area over a short distance. Power = force × distance. The part that can be rebuilt is the master cylinder which takes the power from the pedal and booster to pressurize hydraulic fluid. The rear end of that in this case is leaking into the booster. The master cylinder is the component that compresses calipers; it can also open brake shoes on drum brakes.
Lol and if you didn’t know and added brake fluid a few times and one day your truck starts smoking and stinks it’s because you’ve filled the booster up to the vacuum port and now your sucking brake fluid into the engine. It smells awful. Ask me how I know lol

How does smoking exhaust happen through brake fluid leak ?
