The point he's making at 24:32 is profound. To say prophecy has ceased is like saying preaching and teaching have ceased. That's wild. Just cause we sometimes misapply preaching and teaching doesn't mean we shouldn't preach or teach!

There are many churches that teach the Scriptures and exercise the spiritual gifts. Yes many churches have doctrinal abuses that operate in the spiritual gifts. However, there are churches that are doctrinaly sound that exercise the gifts.

Sam's points resonate with me too. I'm slowly warming up to the Continuationist position on the basis of solid exegesis. Sam offers me thoughtful inquiry without the "it feels right to me" expression. He, Jack Deere, Josh and the two Michaels pivot from careful reading of Scripture. I won't listen to anybody who doesn't carefully read...and yes, they're out there.

Another good dialogue guys. I have to admit, by far, with this doctrine I've been swayed back and forth on both sides of this debate so much, I feel like a ping pong ball during a table tennis match. In my experience, and from what I see in the Christian world. ( I dont speak for every church or christian worldwide) What always makes this a confusing issue, is every church ive ever seen or been to that has such emphasis on these gifts, where the Spirit is apparently moving, ill be honest. Doctrine is less regarded. Bible illiteracy is rampant, false doctrines and heresy is not taken serious. Sin/Gods Holiness, are avoided, and etc. Just to name a few of the ever increasing problems, Yet in the church where the Spirit isnt apparently moving, Bible and doctrine is very serious. Great theology is taught, Sin and Gods holiness are expressed, and dealt with. Heresy and false doctrine is taken very seriously, and the godly character of the people show so much fruit of the spirit, etc..Now! This is not a blanket statement for the whole church world wide. This has just been my observation and experience. And I have to tell you. When I was first converted, I attended a church, where the gifts were very openly manifested, I wasnt wise or had any sort of discernment, but over time as I grew in my faith in knowledge I really did start to see some worrying and troublesome doctrines creep in, elderly mature christians in my church were endorsing such things as Rick Warrens books, praising that heretical book " the shack" as so forth, yet these gifts were rampant. It confused me, and really caused me to stumble. So over alot of prayer and a wrestling with God I had to leave that church. That was 3 years ago, Im now in a church where the Word is taken seriously, false doctrines are taken seriously, and my faith, love and knowledge for God has grown so much. My relationship with God is ever growing, God has been so good to us at our church, and yet these gifts dont manifest. The point im trying to make is , if I had to choose between where the gifts are manifesting the most or where Gods Words is really taught and preached, I would choose the latter, even though I do desire to see the gifts happen. Its just unfortanate that its super rare in churches where doctrine and living holy is taken serious, there also does the Spirit move as it did in Corinth.

You know it can appear like that at times, but that only a veneer. Mark 16: 17& 20; Romans 15:18-21 (sorry you ll have to lok them up) does open up the question whether in fact the "gospel" is properly being proclaimed within those supposedly sound doctrinal churches. I think you have to distinguish between the "gospel and the paranesis that builds upon it. Likewise Galatians 3:5 connects the hearing of the gospel with the continued "supply" of the Spirit in working miracles. You could ask the question why miracles aren't following sound doctrine, or question the message (gospel) that being preached and probably the manner it's preached (by those not empowered by the Spirit) .
You might not like the conclusions

After coming into gifts of the spirit and seeing healings, people being filled with the spirit, tongues being interpreted, words of knowledge etc. my wife and I knew that we would always want to be part of a people that do as Paul says "eagerly desire the spiritual _gifts_, especially that you may prophesy". Your concern has always been mine as well as I am not naturally inclined to pursue the miraculous given my absolute commitment to the authority of scripture as well as my personality. I have also been to way too many charismatic meetings and conferences and churches where things were wildly out of hand, unbiblical, and not glorifying God or building up His church. That being said, it was ultimately my commitment to scripture that changed everything. I've never regretted one moment in my pursuit of God and His purposes in giving gifts to His church as the impact they have had on my life and the life of unbelievers (someone I have been sharing the Gospel with lately just came to Christ through a prophetic word given to them), and people in my church family is nothing short of amazing. Super super long story short but my wife and I just packed up our amazing life in a small town we loved surrounded by family and amazing friends to move to one of the highest crime areas in the midwest to be a part of a people that not only pursue the gifts completely and have an apostolic lead church with recognized prophets and a small network of elder led churches etc., but also teach the absolute authority of scripture in everything we do, where progressive Christianity is taught against, where correction is brought to prophetic words and weighing happens, where community is not just Sunday's or in small groups but it's a people that really does life together. It's a church where elders are only set in after years and years of being able to know them and their character. Even the small group leaders are people who have been with the church for a long time and are couples of high integrity and leadership. Our last meeting on Sunday, actually all the prophetic words that were brought were either about God's holiness or repentance. I am humbled to be apart of where God has led us to and I wouldn't leave for anything. People will move for jobs, for college, for a significant other, but our society would seem to think it was strange to move to be a part of a church family, however I would say it would be of first importance to find a Bible based church that also pursues the gifts of the spirit and has Biblical leadership and government within the church. They are out there brother, keep pursuing.

@@TKK0812 thanks for sharing that Keegan. Its super encouraging to hear that. Ill admit, I was instantly envious reading that. The thing is, we do desire spiritual gifts, but a few of us also in our small church come out of a church where like I said, crazy gifts, but terrible doctrine. Ands its affected the view point and understanding in these areas. I do hope and pray for this to be a reality in my church someday

@@johnwarren3789 I'll definitely be praying for you this evening, John. We had to leave our church about 5 years ago as they agreed with charismatic theology but said it would never be a part of their church in practice (weird, right?). We ended up leaving with a few other couples on really good terms and with the blessing of the leaders we were under from that church at the time to meet in a living room for worship nights and to pray for God to help us and send us leadership as we knew not being connected to a NT church was not God's long term plan or heart for us. God was faithful to literally send us, miraculously, people from this church up to us for 2 years as we learned and grew together before God then called 5 of us couples back to the church these people were sent from. God is moving in miraculous ways here as we try to reach our city. My only suggestion is to get on your face before Him and ask Him for a sound biblical church! Blessings, John

Hi Keegan, thanks for sharing your experience.
I have come to the conclusion that there is a bigger issue which governs how we respond to the Bible's teaching about the gifts of the Spirit - our whole relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Bible is clear that our relationship with God should be Spirit to spirit - that it should be both words - ideas - and experience. If it is limited to only one of these God will definitely intend for this to change - and we must seek him. If God is to us more an idea in our mind than true in our experience we must wait for him - not offer dead works - as the disciples did in Acts 2. Acts 2 was not just the start of something - it was the end of an era characterised by the disciples relying on their own strength.
In confronting this issue I believe we will see the issue of the gifts of the Spirit come to be dealt with. So if you agree with me I have a request - focus what you say and seek for on the need for "Holy Spirit churches" - as distinct from charismatic churches. Not because I don't want all churches to be charismatic - I do - although only if the use of the gifts of the Spirit is governed by the wish to see growth in the fruit of the Spirit. The presence of the gifts of the Spirit alone isn't proof of its maturity - even if the absence of them - in the church as a whole - not in any individual - is proof of a church's immaturity.

The first thing I thought when I went to a Pentecostal Church was, "Wow, these people are rude, emotional, and not very smart." You will have to forgive me, because I was only 18 years old, just out of high school, and I had never been to a Protestant Church before. The first Protestant Church I went to (Assembly of God) scared the daylights out of me. They were also rude to me. This was a little Church way out in the country. Later I went to a larger "Assemblies" Church and they were more like a quieter Evangelical Church. I guess they are all different.

One more thing on apostles… One of the things I have noticed just by observation and from the apostles in Scripture is that they seem to be able to move in and out of the different ministry gifts. You can see Paul ministering as a profit through revelation, an evangelist in winning souls, pastoral care, and obviously he was a teacher as he was a theologian. You can see it with apostolic gifts of today. Some may have strengths and weaknesses, but you can see a variety of gifts in them working together. They seem to be able to wear multiple hats.

Thank you so much for this discussion, guys. I was saved in 2016 into a Charismatic Church. This channel and your discussions has been instrumental for me. These discussions have made me want to research in scripture more, and it makes me feel less alone in figuring out where I stand on the Charissmatic---->Cessationist spectrum. I agree that there can be an imbalance in the Charismatic side where it's less critical thinking, and that on the Cessastionist side, the passion and love is lacking. I pray that as Christ's church we can learn to dialogue better so that new Christians dont have to feel like they need to figure it out alone.

As one with a classical Pentecostal background, this may help some. We generally classify the one Corinthians 12 manifestation gifts as follows. Revelation, power, utterance. Revelation gifts being word of wisdom, word of knowledge, and discerning of spirits. The gift of power would be faith, or special faith, gift of healing, and workings of miracles and the utterance or vocal gifts being prophecy, kinds of tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Several of these manifestation GIFs in the original Greek or plural.

If so I would argue it is. Basically this also seemed to be what the answer "everyone needs to judhe this by himself.." has implied.

I want to say I enjoyed this conversation. Also to make sure I'm not read wrong below, I believe and pray for the gifts of the Spirit in my life and see them. As well I believe and pray to see them in the church. I believe the Holy Spirit is working out the gifts in those who believe him for these manifestation of himself in and through us. However he doesn't control us and so that is what I hope my comment below is making clear. We see it in Acts 16:10 when it says "we concluded God had called us to preach the gospel to them". That looks to mean the Holy Spirit gave the vision, but Paul and his companions came to the conclusion that the vision was the way God was directing them to go. Just some thoughts.

Just to offer some clarity on Agabus in Acts 21:11-12. It is the Spirit fortelling through the prophet what is going to happen to Paul, the man. However in verse 12 it is the believers who urge Paul not to go to Jerusalem. "This is what the Holy Spirit says: 'In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will tie up the man whose belt this is, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.' that's all the Spirit says through Agabus. The Holy Spirit gives no direction in these words.

Regarding apostles consider Acts 14:14 “But when the apostles BARNABAS and Paul heard this…” is an interesting scripture. I didn’t quote the whole verse but in greater context this is after they were both sent out in Acts 13. They were not sent out by mistake and a good study of Acts 13 and 14 shows BARNABAS and Paul was sent out.

  • @MellyArnie

Lonnie Frisbee is the preeminent model of how the gifts of the spirit manifest: you simply trust and listen to what God puts in your heart to do and not delay in acting on it.
God’s sovereignty does not supersede our will. He gave us the same spirit as Christ. It’s our hardened hearts, our choices of how we interact with nature (an extension of God) and lack of knowledge and trust that God would do heal, give me wisdom etc. that it doesn’t occur.
Also God does not preselect who is saved. All are invited and by His word He cannot interfere. He knows who will accept Jesus as He is omniscient but isn’t not allowing some people to become His children.

  • @philipbenjamin4720

We're confused about apostleship and other gifts of the Spirit because we focus either on the supernatural (which cannot be it - how can being an apostle be about doing miracles when doing miracles is itself listed as a lesser gift in 1 Cor 12?) or on natural capacity (if gifts are about the natural surely Jesus in looking for twelve apostles should not have chosen a number of fishermen) instead of on the heart.
But how can gifts be about the heart? Aren't all Christians called to reflect the heart of God? Yes but the gifts are specific graces to sacrifice oneself. The pastor/teacher is called to a higher level of sacrifice in being vulnerable to potentially anyone in the church - in the work of preaching - and in often having to endure silently the disapproval of some in the church. The evangelist takes it one step further - which is why he or she is next up the list in Eph 4 even if not in the list in 1 Cor 12 - he or she has to deal with the greater hostility of the world. The prophet - in speaking the truth in a way that confronts the disobedience of both the world and the church - is really feeling the consequences - the cost - the isolation - of faith. And then finally - and at the top - the apostle - who deals with the disapproval of both the world and the church and who also uses his gift in the hope of replacing himself. The heart of the apostle is to rejoice that you are considered to suffer disgrace for the name of God. It's "you sleep in my bed instead of me". Any person with this heart - whether or not they do miracles - is apostolic.
Just because a gift is about the heart doesn't mean that it isn't a kind of competence. For example the reason why apostleship is about strategy despite the definition I just gave it is because only those who are willing to diminish are open to the best strategy for growing the church. Which is to diminish so that others might become greater!
We must therefore not associate apostleship with prominence - with books sold - with frequent flyer miles.
It should now be clear why it even makes sense to seek the greater gifts - because if it's God's grace for sacrifice it can be ours.
PS Why is doing miracles a lesser gift? Wouldn't everyone become Christians if people were doing miracles everywhere? Possibly but not necessarily. God did daily miracles in front of Israel in the desert and they didn't repent. There is actually something more powerful - something greater than miracles - in revealing God to people - our character. That's who our God is - one who prefers to reveal his character over his power.
PPS What I have said applies also to teaching. The gift of teaching is a gift OF THE HEART. We have missed this because of our wrong ideas about giftedness and also because our teaching is so incoherent that those who would be able to understand deep things if they all flowed from their personal experience - are unable to make the connections. That's serious.
PPPS As can be seen in the way Jesus doesn't condemn the mother of the sons of Zebedee - the position of the greatest in the kingdom of God is not closed to anyone. It belongs to the person who is willing to be the servant of all. It follows that apostleship is open to women - in as far as it is possible to conceive of apostleship in a way that doesn't also involve final responsibility for doctrine. Jesus chooses twelve male apostles - but they are all also called to be teachers. Get ready for the day when God offends our thinking with the presence of female apostles who do the entrepreneurial side of planting churches which are taught and eldered by men.

My issue is usually the reality on the ground that we ignore, either the Holy Spirit has failed in gifting people/churches or they're not gifts they are earned powers since ordinary churches don't have this supernatural gifts. Now there's an added confusion that Storms has brought, that the Apostles, prophecy, etc are DIFFERENT from the ones in the Bible...Y'all see this confusion and hattricks?

  • @ryandawson2877
    @ryandawson2877 3 года назад +2

In regard to prophecy, I see it as an utterance gift and not so much a revelatory gift. I base this on one Corinthians 14:3. They speak to men to edify, exhort, and comfort. Revelation is not necessarily spoken up there. It can simply be an encouraging word from the Lord. So I see prophecy as being a spoken gift which may or may not carry word of knowledge or word of wisdom revelation many times is spoken by profits, one Corinthians 1432:33. So one may prophesied often but not necessarily have revelation in their words of prophecy.

  • @philipbenjamin4720
    @philipbenjamin4720 3 года назад +2

It isn't possible to have a relationship with God for one minute without supernatural intervention. God doesn't relate to us mind to mind - he relates to us Spirit to spirit. So any experience we have of God in relationship with him is of the nature of prophecy - it is the Holy Spirit either giving us words through his counsel - or experience of those words through his presence - about himself. So then we have to ask - what is cessationism? It would involve believing that God continues to supernaturally speak to us every minute of every day - but only about us and him - never about anyone else. So for example he could never say to us "don't be impatient with your brother - he's short tempered because he has been mistreated" because the two would have come together.
Speaking as a whole cessationists don't only differ about the gifts of the Spirit - they will to varying degrees have different beliefs about the nature of the way that God relates to us personally.

Focusing on and chasing these gifts is bringing pride into your heart and becoming self righteous. Focusing on Jesus and living like he did is what he asks of us. If HE feels we are worthy, HE will bless us with the gifts HE decides we deserve. Don't walk onto this prideful path.

Thanks guys. This was a very insightful and useful interview on the topic of continuationism and the gifts of the Spirit. 😎👍
Especially interesting to see a continuationist who's also a calvinist. 🤔
Although I think I did notice an inconsistency just after the hour mark where Sam discusses our cooperation with God's sovereignty - this notion seems to not be congruent with full calvinism but rather arminianism or traditionalism! ⚖
💡 An extra thought about the authority of prophetic words and sin:
Scripture says that those who know the good they should do but don't do it, for them it is sin. This would suggest that there is a category of subjective sin based on our personal life with the Spirit. 🔥
However, like with all sin, there is forgiveness and grace when we mess up, and there's hope and empowerment when we choose to obey. 💯😎

but still.. i do believe all those great pastors i named above.
and i cant take the tongues sirious how they say it. even as the healings and god want you to be good healthy and abundance (i believe it but not as abundace money)
and if i say that its not to become rich but to have more then enough, pray for all you will. and if your faith is good he will answer .
It feel stupid because i was always little stupid believed nothing. and now i believe god. but it feels like i have the holy spirit ( get baptized next month) but.... i doubt if its so because the others in my church say i need baby milk i am in my childshoes in faith etc
but... it feels like god send my this direction and not letting me fall for it ....
but, i cant say to much to pastor and elders because who am i just 2 months with faith .
and they say i better not watch those pastors who claim those things, and he was not willing to watch it all because he was going along with it if he watched that to long and thats not good..
but my thought is then (why not, if its true and you will change mind? its only good)
but.. i can understand it a bit but then its pride standing in their way.
because they think they are far now and just getting the babytongues hahaha.
but sometimes i doubt. becsuse who am i.
i go to there still, but i only check context when doubt and ignore the tongues and kind of hysteria worship i keep sitting, to see if they will me to do along with them, because then i know they can play your mind more. its kind of hypnosis.
i am gratefull i have did alot with NLP and Hypnosis before. so maybe this saves me. i see the same things i different ways.
and i do believe they believe it themselves. but they also are like no judging, and to sirous because bible also says judge false teachings and watch out for that .
but to keep saying this i dont want to hurt someone or make someone think they stupid its also not that they are that. but.. its already good that i was able to say it at all, so its now to them to believe it or not. i didnt say it as it was so but i say it like i see this, and i read it also different, some gets this gift some that and so on and not all are still today, but they wont see it that. so i plant a seed, and they ignore and do as i am not far enough and it will come later that i get that
but i wont do that tongues , they say it like you start with ba.
    ba la mi
if they are doing this to me i going to say i can do speak like that. but i coult do it also when i had no faith so its not special...
    its just nothing for me
    sorry for bad english

The point on women prophesying and the jab about them not teaching... maybe I’m not following but 1 Corinthians 11 says that if a woman prophecies with her head uncovered, dishonors her head... if she does so, she should just shave her head... “be embarrassed” “feel shame” I don’t think that is what he meant. Maybe I’m wrong.

I think the church's take on "Old Testament prophecy" is too narrow. Phillip's daughters and the prophets at Corinth, for instance, clearly were doing something different from what we know of what Isaiah did, because we don't have any of their words in Scripture like we do of Isaiah. But we don't have the words of all of the Old Testament prophets in Scripture, either! And there are others for whom we have some words related more incidentally -- as part of a narrative *about* them, rather than as direct "thus says Yahweh" (and an implication that a lot more of what they did is probably not recorded in Scripture.) Huldah. Miriam. Nathan. The other prophets mentioned in connection with Elijah and/or Elisha. Etc. They also had the Urim and Thummim as a means of direct revelation regarding how a person or the nation should operate in a given setting. The *purpose* of this type of revelation was more narrow and personal than the "for all men of all ages" revelation of Scripture. This was *always* a distinct function, even in the OT.

27:30 The word's of Prophecy, uttered by Phillip's Daughters, not being recorded, is no different from the word's of Iddo the Prophet not being preserved in the canon, or the words of the Prophets who Prophesied with Saul. etc. The fact that we don't write down and preserve the words of New Testament Prophets, in no way distinguishes them from Old Testament Prophets (most of whose words are also not recorded). There are simply those Prophets, Apostles, Evangelists, etc., whom God chose to Inspire with the God-breathed Scriptures, and those He chose to use for different purposes. The gift is the same, and remains the same. There is simply nothing in Scripture that teaches otherwise.

Bible doesnt say ,"watch out for prophets" but ,"watch out for FALSE prophets. And the prophets words are to be tested which seems to suggest they are not always accurate or at least received or given correctly. But nevertheless , we dont despise them. The fact that that scriputre is there suggest there was reason to despise them.

So much error in interpretation then due to so many who prophesied without having a sound grounding in the scripture that we KNOW to be true.
I believe that what Paul is talking about in Corinthians is simply preaching, and at that he was rebuking and correcting abuses in the body of this gift.

Beware of your personal interpretation of prophesizing.
When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.

Most of who Storms mentioned to be apostles, people he believes are top teachers etc, have been brought down since this video was posted. Bickle, Chandler etc. So, his discernment is not trustworthy. Why do you count him among the wise???

If your talking about unknown tongues. The word before tongues is unknown demonic . Acts is a language that was not learned. Not the Corinthian unknown tongues
