      I think also if the villain at some point essentially “Wins”. I don’t think anyone would agree with villains like The Emperor from Star Wars or someone insane like Kefka from Final Fantasy 6 who just wants to destroy and rule with an iron fist while all are left miserably. But at some point in their story they win big and because they actually won they make better villains then those that were already fully in power and there downfall was their lack of effort.

    Speaking as a jewish person, and being able to empathize with Magneto's knee-jerk refusal to accept that the people who do not belong to your social and cultural demographic will ever accept you for various, often illogical reasons? There is a phrase we have that Magneto exemplifies, eloquent in its brevity, masterful in its simplicity and its capacity to extend to all facets of his character.
    "Never forget"
    He can never, WILL never forget the atrocities committed against his fellow jew, and fellow mutant, by a population that said the quiet part out loud and acted on it. The quiet part that rests in the heart of- while not all, so very many people in the world. That they will never accept you, see you as fundamentally different and not worthy of their compassion, respect or benefit of the doubt, and that the only way you can keep yourself from being hurt is by remembering what they did before so you don't make that mistake again.
    It's the philosophy of a trauma survivor, not wrong to think that way, but too damaged and scared to ever trust opening up again. It's the reason why Magneto's mutant-ruled world didn't work, because his entire motivation was predicated on a foundation of "Never again", but for that to work there needs to be someone else out there that would presumably want to hurt you. When you rule, you need a different rallying cry, and while I am in no way saying that he IS one, his philosophy, in that way, has similar themes to facism, in that it NEEDS an enemy to rally against in order to charismatically call people to their leader's side, which is why it failed- in basing his rallying cry around fear and rebelling against oppression, there was no solid, unifying force to keep them together once they won.
    Charles' perspective meanwhile, while too naiive and inactive to properly understand how to reach people in the way that Magneto's would, is more sustainable in the long-term, as it pulls people together through understanding and companionship, giving them a reason to stay together and goals to work for in the future after they presumably are the ruling or accepted party.
    It's a perfect example of how extreme hatred and extreme pacifism will never accomplish your goals. You need to be ruthless when necessary, and you need to give people something to stand for by themselves, on their own merits, through no enemy on the horizon, but by what they want to be moving forward.

    • @scinnyc
      @scinnyc 2 месяца назад +2

      No offense, but a lot of Jews can pass for being Anglo. My grandfather got remarried to a Jewish lady and her mother had blonde hair. Hell, my Jewish philosophy teacher in college had blonde hair and blue eyes. If we were to equate Jews to mutants, most of you would be able to pass for being human. But try being Black. We'd equate to mutants who look like Sabretooth, Mystique, Domino, Nightcrawler, Blink, etc. Not to downplay the horrendous treatment that the Jews have had to endure, but a lot of you can blend in. Magneto himself can easily pass for human, while mutants like Henry McCoy can not. There's a big difference between being discovered of who you are if you use your powers or you're somehow detected, rather than your mutation being blatantly obvious simply based on the way that you look. I always found it ironic that the most pro-mutant mutant in Marvel Comics didn't even look like one

    This is why I firmly believe that Magneto is the greatest Superman villain that Superman will never fight. And it's not because of the powers(though a fight between would make for an epic spectacle), but rather, it's because of the ideology. The idea of humans' mistreatment of others is wrong is correct, and im sure everyone can agree with Magneto on that. But respectfully, what the hell are yall talking about??? Because he was repeatedly mistreated and watched muntants and jews killed and hurt makes his philosophy, right? Genocide isn't ok, this idea is played with in AOT, and the people of the verse know why erin did what he did, but they dont agree with the genocide. The idea of Magento is a hypocrite. He was a victim of a dictators wrath and now does the very thing that was done to him. He believes his race is superior and everyone else, including sympathizers, should die. He is a good character because he is a hypocrite as it's someone done right, not because his philosophy was right. If i was beaten down by bad people, called derogatory names because of my race, why does that give me the right to be just as bad as they are hurting everyone include not only the good of mankind but my own flesh and blood?

    2 minutes in here. Magneto is right, without the power of violence humanity would never respect mutants.
    Laws are menacing, because violence is what backs them up. Magneto was just following natural law.
    Could we have a video on how Professor Xavier has waxed and waned over the years?

    • @Tokmurok
      @Tokmurok 2 месяца назад +2

      Exactly, even though there would be many humans willing to assist and support mutants, there are would be too many that don't, especially in positions of power who, even if they were mutants, would to no end of cruelty seek to maintain their dominance. The masses would either fall in line like the herd they are, and those who would resist would fail to have the power to do so because they are only human.
      Magneto was right, it just how he tries to achieve his goals that presents moral issues.

    I believe most villains in comics are driven with a certain ideology that isn't as extreme as people might think. I love this series so much as we are able to see the other side of the view. Keep up the good work Rob and please Dr Doom next!!

    I love this because it's not an intellectual perspective as a matter of flexing how adult the comic book medium can be. I love it because it shows the function of any fictional creation that can be used to apply real-world thoughts and themes in a theoretical safe space. Many of the most talented writers and storytellers aren't shoehorning these beliefs and thought exercises for nothing. They take these relatively known quantities of comic book entities, and try to do some big brained stuff with it.
    Thanks for the breakdown!

    Yes, please cover Thanos! These types of videos highlights that comics can focus on deeper topics. Granted, they have been. It is more so the journey and different publications throughout a character’s history that explore the nuances of said topics. Intentional or not.
