I have always thought this about Magneto. Though he has done some pretty devious things to achieve his goals in the past, I still think that he frame of mind is correct. That is why he is one of my favorite characters of all.
Speaking as a jewish person, and being able to empathize with Magneto's knee-jerk refusal to accept that the people who do not belong to your social and cultural demographic will ever accept you for various, often illogical reasons? There is a phrase we have that Magneto exemplifies, eloquent in its brevity, masterful in its simplicity and its capacity to extend to all facets of his character. "Never forget" He can never, WILL never forget the atrocities committed against his fellow jew, and fellow mutant, by a population that said the quiet part out loud and acted on it. The quiet part that rests in the heart of- while not all, so very many people in the world. That they will never accept you, see you as fundamentally different and not worthy of their compassion, respect or benefit of the doubt, and that the only way you can keep yourself from being hurt is by remembering what they did before so you don't make that mistake again. It's the philosophy of a trauma survivor, not wrong to think that way, but too damaged and scared to ever trust opening up again. It's the reason why Magneto's mutant-ruled world didn't work, because his entire motivation was predicated on a foundation of "Never again", but for that to work there needs to be someone else out there that would presumably want to hurt you. When you rule, you need a different rallying cry, and while I am in no way saying that he IS one, his philosophy, in that way, has similar themes to facism, in that it NEEDS an enemy to rally against in order to charismatically call people to their leader's side, which is why it failed- in basing his rallying cry around fear and rebelling against oppression, there was no solid, unifying force to keep them together once they won. Charles' perspective meanwhile, while too naiive and inactive to properly understand how to reach people in the way that Magneto's would, is more sustainable in the long-term, as it pulls people together through understanding and companionship, giving them a reason to stay together and goals to work for in the future after they presumably are the ruling or accepted party. It's a perfect example of how extreme hatred and extreme pacifism will never accomplish your goals. You need to be ruthless when necessary, and you need to give people something to stand for by themselves, on their own merits, through no enemy on the horizon, but by what they want to be moving forward.
No offense, but a lot of Jews can pass for being Anglo. My grandfather got remarried to a Jewish lady and her mother had blonde hair. Hell, my Jewish philosophy teacher in college had blonde hair and blue eyes. If we were to equate Jews to mutants, most of you would be able to pass for being human. But try being Black. We'd equate to mutants who look like Sabretooth, Mystique, Domino, Nightcrawler, Blink, etc. Not to downplay the horrendous treatment that the Jews have had to endure, but a lot of you can blend in. Magneto himself can easily pass for human, while mutants like Henry McCoy can not. There's a big difference between being discovered of who you are if you use your powers or you're somehow detected, rather than your mutation being blatantly obvious simply based on the way that you look. Everyone thinks they are doing what they do for just reasons.
But not darkseid murder is just like a hobby for him
@@Mononeucleofus Thanos too. You're forgetting COMIC Thanos was much more overtly evil. He didn't want to kill half of existance to balance things out. He did it because he was trying to bone Death. He also made Deadpool fully immortal just so HE couldn't bone Death.
@@SSD_Penumbra oh yeah I always forget about that being apart of his comics character.
That and ruining one dudes life every year on his birthday or was that darkseid I forget
Erik Magnus is my favorite Marvel character period, but not cause he's right. No, no, no. Only because give Magneto time to think it thru, and he can't lose.
Happy for the Russo Bros, though bittersweet for R. Coogler & D. Daniel (Shang Chi Director).
I love this because it's not an intellectual perspective as a matter of flexing how adult the comic book medium can be. I love it because it shows the function of any fictional creation that can be used to apply real-world thoughts and themes in a theoretical safe space. Many of the most talented writers and storytellers aren't shoehorning these beliefs and thought exercises for nothing. They take these relatively known quantities of comic book entities, and try to do some big brained stuff with it.
Thanks for the breakdown!
Great vid
Yes, please cover Thanos! These types of videos highlights that comics can focus on deeper topics. Granted, they have been. It is more so the journey and different publications throughout a character’s history that explore the nuances of said topics. Intentional or not.
Magneto Testament definitely scarred me a bit. And then I looked up all of its historicity.
And that scarred me more
Well, Avalon didn't require him contesting Avalon with people already living there.
Philosophy through Comics 101...welcome to class everyone!
After what happened at the end of his revival during the lastest story, he definitely has changed view points alot as a character
One of the truly great morally complex characters in all of fiction, full stop.
~_~
Mr.Nobody from Grant Morrisons Doom Patrol run is fun to look into.
i like these kinda videos. please do one for ultron 🤣
I think I’m gonna enjoy this series of videos since you’re gonna be doing all the cool ones. Which villains weren’t right is the smaller list lol
Rob I am begging you, if you're going to cover Thanos next one,for the love of The One Above All please do not make it about the watered down Mickey Mouse version of Thanos we got in the MCU who cares about "balance".
THANOS, THANOS, THANOS!! Magneto breakdown was good! Rob, you must now do.... THANOS, THANOS, THANOS!
