The VERY BEST Walk in The Peak District National Park for 2024 - A hidden gem - Secret Waterfalls

  • No exaggeration! This is definitely the BEST walk in The Peak District! Not a suitable hike for everyone, hard going in places, and a proper walking boot is required.
    This Hike certainly has it all though! Rivers, Waterfalls, Pine Forest, Panoramic Sunrise and Sunset views, and some of the BEST Valley VIEWS in The Peak District.
    Approximately 14km round-trip. Well worth a whole day to explore.
    One of the lesser-known routes in The Peak District so you're sure to have some peace and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Ladybower Reservoir.
    Alport Castles has to be one of England's most spectacular Sunset locations. To really make the most of this an overnight wild camp would be best. However, wild camping is not permitted in The Peak District ;)

    I've run a lot of miles round the peak district and during lockdown have really taken the time to explore new parts of the park. The River Alport is truly one of the most remote feeling locations I've ever been. Definitely a hidden gem that not many people know of.

    I downloaded your map into All Trails, and did this hike on the weekend. It was a little harder than I thought it would be :) but me and my 2yr old Spaniel managed to do this. And yes, that waterfall is so amazing. I took a slightly different route on the way back, and walked across the river which I found a little easier, as the ferns were quite overgrown and my dog was struggling to walk through it.

      That’s amazing! Glad you braved it. The difficult definitely depends on time of year and general conditions. I’m sure now you can appreciate how there’s several slight variations to how the route can be taken. Hope you had a great day at least :)

    Looks awesome. Once you get to Alport Castles is it worth dropping down on the footpath to Hey Ridge and back to the carpark through Lady Clough Moor to make a bit more of a circular? Thinking of doing this next week but don't know that side of the peaks.... Thanks, Dan

    • @matthewmakingmemories
      @matthewmakingmemories  3 года назад +1

      By all means, you could create a circular that way, it would however be a mammoth distance and potentially have to involve the A57 Snake Pass itself. Personally what I have done a few times is either simply drop into the valley, cross the river and retrace my route on the opposite side... or drop into the valley and head straight back up the other side through the pine trees and then make my way back along the opposite ridgeline so far before taking a westerly back in the direction of the car, following game trails and intuition :) pretty much as the crow flies. Admittedly there is no "path" as such but the game trails feel quite accessible and like you're not damaging the environment up there

    hi matthew , how are you , great video thank you , quick question if you dont mind answering , during the lockdown are we allowed now to travel to the peaks district and if so , where would you recommend for a family with young kids ?, i dont mind a bit of a adventure and it would be a day trip so morning to evening so 10km would be far more then enough , also water falls streams rivers would be a nice location for us so where would do recommend , thank you

    • @matthewmakingmemories
      @matthewmakingmemories  4 года назад +1

      Hello :) yes the Peak District is very much open again.
      For an adventure that includes rivers and waterfalls I’d recommend doing this exact walk from the video... you can stop and retrace your route at any time to control the distance. Heading up Snake Road A57 to its highest point, before it descends into Glossop. You can park road side and head North on the Pennine Way footpath.
      The high point on your left of the Pennine Path is the Crash Site of a WWII plane or keep heading along the path until it intersects a small river. Cross the river and immediately follow the river down the Valley. This valley is superb for river and waterfalls.
      Have fun :)

      Glossop Station would be possible. However i'd actually recommend Edale station. You will then have immediate access to Kinder Scout. Hike over Kinder and down the back side, where you will eventually find yourself on Snake Pass Road and basically back at the beginning of my original route, where you can continue on to Alport Castles and with my additions to the route, loop back around over Kinder and back to Edale

    This look amazing! I have a quick question... Is the Peak District open for trekking irrespective of the England lockdown? I am guessing the Peak District isn't in an enclosed area... Also, how long on average does it take to walk the route (there and back) that you outlined?

    • @matthewmakingmemories
      @matthewmakingmemories  3 года назад +2

      Yes The Peak District is open for business (as long as you’re not travelling too far to get there)
      This particular route is very secluded for most parts so your interaction with others would be minimal anyway.
      To fully enjoy the route I’d realistically allow yourself the whole day, especially this time of year with the reduced amount of daylight.
      There are several waterfalls and the river itself to explore and you’d want plenty of time to enjoy Alport Castles once you got there... pack up a lunch and make a day of it :)
