Hi Lad . Liked and subscribed.. Just realised , not done the Snake pass since 1985.. Happier days when visiting Holmfirth to see Nora Batty about some wrinkly stockings she sold me on e-bay :))). Checking the weather and next weekend looks like there will be hole in the rain clouds.. Thanks for the beautiful vlog and some nice off bike footage as you journey on to yonder hills .🤓💯❤🩹🙏🤳🤳
Nice video 👍 The roads reputation has little to do with the road and more to do with the questionable driving of some along the route. It's a great road, ride, enjoy, and be safe.
I walked it in around 1975. We were three school lads from London. There was a blizzard, and the snow was 2 feet deep in places. When we reached the Pennine Way, there was a BBC van filming the blizzard. They gave us a cup of tea! Then we trailed down to Glossop for fish and chips before heading up to Crowden and a freezing cold Youth Hostel! Those were the days.....
Going to the Snake pass via Buxton is a very long way round. You need to go to Glossop and start from there, or go to Sheffield to get to the eastern end.. I should know having lived at the Manchester end since childhood and driven over the Snake countless times to go walking or rock climbing in the Peak District since the 1960´s. Never mind your satnav, get a map out and get yourself orientated and acquainted with the lie of the land. Erwood reservoir and the Cat and Fiddle are miles from the Snake with a good chunk of high moorland in between. Now for some truth about the origin of the name. "The name of the road matches its winding route, but actually derives from the emblem of the Snake Inn, one of the few buildings on the high stretch of road. In turn, the pub's name and sign were derived from the serpent on the Cavendish arms of William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire." So there you have it. As for danger, a friend owned a Ford Cortina Savage which had a 3 Litre V6 engine and very fast for it´s time. My friend hit 100 mph on the straight bit over the summit before anchors on for the sharpish bend over the Doctors Gate culvert, well sharp at that approach speed. In those days the Snake often got blocked by winter snow, as did most of the passes over the moors.
Good bit of history. I started the Snake Pass at the Glossop end and went west to east and ended up at Sheffield. Living south of Derbyshire it was 89 miles to Glossop, I came through many place including Buxton.👍
Hi, I lived at the start of the Snake Pass in Glossop for over 15 years. A great road to ride on. But just be aware of the blind left hand bends. Especially just past the Snake Pass Inn when going towards Sheffield. Same coming the other way but righthanders instead. That is if it is still open. Moved away nearly 20 years ago. Still it was bags of fun on a sunny day as long as you take care and do not try to do it going hell for leather. You might find hell sooner than you would like if you do. It is a pity that you did it in the rain as the road is definitely not at its best in the rain. It is also a pity that you did not mention that from Derwent Reservoir you can turn right and go to Castleton(Where the Blue John mines are), Edale and Hathersage where it was reputed that Little John came from. All really nice places to visit on a sunny day.
Like the info👍. Did snake pass in the sun a couple of years ago with no camera. I still visit Edale and as a child spent a lot of time walking the hills, also went down the Blue John Mines.👍
Fantastic, really enjoyed the video and enjoyed accompanying you on the ride! I’ve chalked Snake Pass up for a return visit this year after watching your video. Subscribed and looking forward to watching more of your videos. Cheers 😁👍🏻
I've ridden it a couple of hundred times on various bikes no problem and very enjoyable only live down the road from Glossop in Holmfirth. Doing Snake pass and the strines is a good ride out.
I do the Strines run regularly on the Triumph Twin but take the Snake when I give the ZZR an outing. Went over Mortimer road a couple of weeks ago and some serious potholes had appeared at Emlin bridge!👎
@@2SpareTyres I made a point of stopping, taking photos and posting them on FB one day. Oddly, it was the same day that an old friend had been whinging about having to drive from Dagenham to Charlton. Gloating can be such fun.
My significant other and I love driving over the Peaks as we live in Stafford, so much history and stuff to do and see. Flask to make a nice brew, nice pubs to stop for lunch, what more could you ask for.
Yes I to love the Peak District and visit Edale at least twice a year. There are so many roads with very little traffic on and plenty of places to stop for a brew. 👍
I've ridden it on my bike. I also drive my lorry along it as i deliver to a factory in Buxton. I have noticed while driving the lorry i do get the odd motorbike doing a stupid overtake. I've never had any problems with the road itself. The problem is the one or two people doing daft things. Marks top tip, when i took my bike there i got lucky and arrived in Buxton while there was a classic car fair and auction going on. So i had a nice cuppa tea and spent more time then i should have looking at classics and trying not to buy anything i might later regret.
Of course you should. I prefer a warm dry day very early in the morning then call by the Glossop Café for a breakfast. All twisty roads that attract bikes can be dangerous and I've seen some absolute idiots riding up in the Peaks that inevitably contribute to the statistics. The road in it's self isn't dangerous.
I've been riding the Snake for over 40 years and never had any real issues TBH. It was a much better run back then before the double white lines appeared everywhere and was an absolute blast on a decent sports bike. I've seen way more trashed cars up there over the years than bikes. In recent years it's been plagued with landslips resulting in closures and roadworks. The drop down into Glossop is still one of my favourite rides these days.👍 Occasionally the plod have a radar patrol down on the long stretch alongside Ladybower.
The main problem with this road is they did not follow the Romans. The Romans did not cross the soft earth and rocks that after the ice age where glacial terminal moraines. At each moraine the road has collapsed. Either now or in the recent past. The road can be a challenge but it is not dangerous, only its users can be dangerous. A challenge is to travel the full length, either way, and only use the brakes 3 times. In the old days the challenge was to do the Ladybower bridge traffic lights to Glossop golf course 30 sign or return, 20 miles in 20 mins. But it is all 50mph now, so miss the cyclists and try enjoy the ride.
Snake pass was named after the Devonshire family who own Chatsworth house. They paid for it, so they could move goods and minerals from the estate to Manchester. The snake is in their coat of arms. Its in a shocking state after landslides. At least its banned to lorries due to weight.
Every weekend you hear idiots on bikes ragging the arse out of their bikes up the Snake Pass. Most weekends you hear an ambulance going up there. As always it's just a few spoiling it for the many. Snake Pass is a lovely road to have fun on if you ride sensibly.
i've done snake pass from glossop towards sheffield quite a few times, and usually then cut back northerly towards penistone just after ladybower, and as with all roads snake pass is only as dangerous as you make it. It's ok for a main road i suppose, but yeah, do it at least once to find out what the fuss aint about, but when in the peaks you can find many more roads you'll enjoy more im sure. GL
Agree it looks like a lovely ride through some nice scenery but certainly didn't look dangerous. We have a lovely country B-road on the outskirts with some nasty bends and it's also termed dangerous although the problem there is the close proximity of a nice pub!
Looks like a typical Snake Pass day to me weather wise, but the weather can change so fast, especially if you're driving through a cloud. The changing weather means it can be officially closed to some vehicles because of ice and snow before you've actually driven the entire length. I've also had some ear pops because of the altitude
At 3 minutes you drive out of Buxton on the A5004 Long Hill Rd which meets the A 6 after Whaley Bridge. The A6 goes thru the delightfully named Dove Holes. 🙂 The A5004 is much the better way for bikes. Driven the Snake Pass many times. It is great scenary and needs careful attention. Nice video.
Having toured and living in an old merc 308D campervan around buxton and the peak district I thought it was going to be one of the difficult roads I remembered, ie really sharp bends and sharp inclines but that was a doddle.
A537 which you mention from Macclesfield to Buxton is challenging, especially for a new driver. my wife hated it 😂 Especially when vehicles cut the corners
I rode it today from Lady Bower to Glossop (before seeing your video)It was slow going due to the traffic, and there are 2 sets of traffic lights due to landslip, it would appear that less traffic goes from Glossop to Lady Bower.
Any road is dangerous if you don't ride safely. we just cam back from the Peak District and had no issues at all. We had a great ride up there and really enjoyed ourselves.
It's a good road if you take your time and respect the road down side where to stop for a bite to eat does anyone have a place in mind safe riding everyone.
@@2SpareTyres it sure is, although Holme moss just off the woodhead is my clear favourite although these days it's due to the ice cream van usually parked at the top.
The Snake Pass should be on any serious motorcyclists Bucket List. Just ride it steady, enjoy the gorgeous bends and scenery and you will have a blast. If you want to enjoy another great Peak District road turn left towards Strines (Mortimer Road) at 11.27 minutes into the video. Recently resurfaced and fantastic ride bringing you out on the A616. About 8 miles of motorcycling heaven.😊
Good advice to follow for any road if you want to to get the most out of your ride.👍 I came down the Mortimer road on the way back from Scotland last year. Glad to hear its been resurfaced.
Come on kids. I used to work up north for Ferodo they were forever bleating on about High Peak and snake pass. None of these are high or challenging. try Bourg Madame or the Gross Glockender if you want to test yourself both go over 10 thousand feet
The Police have a plane on Snake Pass in the summer, and random points with the Police waiting for you once the plane has targeted you if they are less then happy with your riding /driving.
@@2SpareTyres bleedin' caravans, the bane of the British country road, find a nice sweeping section of road, bet ya'bloody life George and Mildred will be pootling along at 30 😱
Hi, the first thing to say its called "the" Snake Pass, and you go on about speed camera's or lack of them, there is no need for them as if you exceed the speed limit you will poss kill yourself as it does not allow for high speeds , and I have ridden the Snake pass for many years, in fact you could say I "cut my teeth" on there I have been riding it for over 45 years and love the ride over, and as I live just at the start of the Pass in Glossop
Snake pass has its moments.... We did it to tick an box on the way to the Lake district. However, after doing the the single tracks and Hard knot was a little boring doing it on the way back. Don't get me wrong, I love a ride, every opportunity I can get on the bike. And just to put this in perspective, Cumbria was my first .... I past my DAS 3 weeks ago.
Lovely road , went up it two up with my wife on our way to Scotland, yep a 5 week tour and back down to the Isle of Man 😊 best thing ever sadly she can longer ride pillion anymore. So touring days over 😢
Your journey sounds amazing and the adventure you had together must be full of great memories. It's sad to hear that your wife can no longer ride with you.
Skidded on a muddy bend in the countryside when picking my girlfriend up from the station and flipped her off the back. Gravel rash thighs etc and still married me but she never went on the bike again.......
@@Fred-Wilbury Absolutely........that was 50 years ago next month! I went on to work as a despatch rider for thirty years leaving my wife to deal with all of my broken bones until my redundancy. Now both enjoying our retirement.
I don't ride a motorbike, but I enjoyed driving over the Snake Pass to Manchester, it's a much better drive than motorways, for me. sadly I cannot afford a car now and I miss the scenery already.
Driving Snake Pass from Manchester to Sheffield is certainly an alternative to motorways. The winding road, with its turns and scenic views is an experience everyone should try. Missing the scenery? Keep those memories alive! 👍
As I got near to Sheffield I pulled off the main road and onto the access road for the Rivelin Dam. The is single track across he Dam and there is a nice spot at the other end to stop for a rest, No parking, hopped off the bike half way down engine still running and took a cheeky picture. The 20 minutes I was sat at the other end there was zero traffic on the Dam. Well spotted though 😊
There is nothing dangerous about snake Pass, I've ridden it may be three times in the past two years, and ridden sensibly and within your ability it's absolutely fine, in fact it's a lovely road with some great scenery, the problem is people riding on it like a bloody race track which it isn't, fools on two wheels will always be a problem 🤷🏻♂️
I've been riding Snake Pass, Buxton, Matlock and Woodhead Pass regularly and yes it's the other idiots in gangs on bikes and driving cars, especially on a sunny Sunday, who give it this reputation. I came across one such car gang who stopped in the middle of the road to have a conversation a few weeks ago then decided to stop at the top of snake pass and get out whilst walking about in the middle of the road where its a blind crest, complete morons the lot of them. They eventually pulled into the Esso petrol station in Glossop were they again caused mayhem just parking in the middle of the forecourt. Saying that most of the bikers I see nod and I would hope they would stop and help if I was having an issue but for me it's not a dangerous road. I rode it in all weathers and love it.
Anyone remember the name of the road near buxton that is really winding, sharpe bends and inclines and has, or had, one of those rc marianism mary statues in a little wooden thingy?
Have ridden the Snake Pass many times with no problem, riding sensibly... until my bike was stolen. Sob!!! If you think you're Valentino Rossi, you soon find out otherwise.
Hi, nice scenery, but as for the road itself it didn't seem a particularly arduous ride, the biggest problem seems to be dodging the potholes. The road from Little River to Akaroa or the Takaka Hill road are far more challenging if you ever want a challenge. There is a 800m elevation change from Riwaka to the top of the pass. ruclips.net/video/C77k1Sc2T0M/видео.htmlsi=RAH4Z83_6z3shA6R
Honestly after hearing people talk about it I found it fairly disappointing. I mean it's alright but it's hardly world class motorcycling. Maybe I've been spoiled by the alps.
Yes I agree. I guess its reputation is not down to technical ability required to ride the road but more based on accident statistics. Since the banning of HGV's on the road I would say this has removed some awkward overtaking manoeuvres and the road will drop off the list.
Yes but do it on a 125 that way you will enjoy it and live. Do it the first time on a sports bike, idiot will be written on your tombstone. Always learn a road before riding at speed. Riding is freedom for as long as we are allowed to ride, idiots dying are taking those rights away. They think all bikers are speed freaks. Stay safe keep the wheels down and you on the bike.
@@2SpareTyres Thank you, I was young did stupid now not so young do slow old grandad. But see the great grand kids every month. Live your life do not be a reason for the prats in government to ban are great life on the road.
Mate how do you think I got wise, I lived after doing stupid things. Riding is great good for the head not for the dead. Spock would say live long and prosper, me live long by keeping away from the boxes of death. Called cars.
Don’t you ride according to conditions weather, surface, speed, sight seeing car drivers, cyclists(that seem to have more right to ride than us on motor cycles)and we pay road tax and of course blind pedestrians and car drivers who drive these pump up rust buckets that should pay HGV road tax!. I have worn myself out now going to bed.z z z
LOL, „the most dangerous…“ Drama BS. If so, then it‘s for stupid riding/driving. We went last year through it and it was a nice road, just a nice road, without the signs telling us it‘s the snake pass we wouldn‘t had considered it anything more than just another nice motorcycle road, with some sheeps that look you in the eye when you lean down to them on curves. Yes, we did it in light wet conditions, just before we were hit by a big rain-splash for 20minutes when we arrived at the end of it and have taken 10minutes to get our raingear on. another youtube drama intro for just another nice road, like the many I have where I live. Similar to the drama-queens crying out loud on the Hardknot pass or the likes, we passed twice with loaded heavy bikes, rolling quick in late evening darkening hours and in the morning again. And no, I‘m not a hard rider or any pro. That‘s my point I wonder if all youtubers in UK are total beginners, as I saw some going even faster, than just quick. But they had no cams on, just like me, I‘m not a tamagochi.
You make the point of the vid very well. Why is this road on the most dangerous list? At the start whilst sat just before Snake pass I say I don't think I agree with that statement and at the end I also say its not a dangerous road. All motorcyclists should Just go ride it and enjoy the day out rather than listening to all the negatives about this road or any other road that we read about. If you ride within both the speed limits and your skill set then none of these roads are particularly dangerous.
Dear 2ST .... you need to get out more - this is not a dangerous road at all. My wife and I ( yes 2 up ) have riden from Lhasa to the Everest Base camp in Tibet . That is a dangerous and difficult ride topping out at 5,248m ( 17,000ft ) . Snake pass is just for babies and beginners. We have also ridden from Chiang Mai in Thailand to Beijing, twice around Southern Africa and in Myanmar plus many others. Even Morocco which is closer to home is far more dangerous than Snake Pass. Go across the Atlas mountains and make another video....

Snake pass is no problem. Going down towards Glossop you have two decreasing radius curves to be aware of but that's all , ridden much worse
Agreed
It's a good road if you take your time and respect the road down side where to stop for a bite to eat does anyone have a place in mind safe riding everyone.
I rode it in 2004 on my brand new ninja 636 .
Still use it now as I am a lorriest for a living.
👍
The Snake Pass has lost much of its sting over the years. You may have noticed there are several loops over small bridges which have been bypassed.
Was chucking it down with rain. Didn't see to much so may come back when the weathers good. 👍
I prefer to ride this route from derwent to glossop. It's a more flowing ride that way.
Might give it a try when the snows gone 👍
Totally agree but do like dropping of the top on way back
Used to have 5.30am practice sessions on there, fond memories.
Nice road for run out 👍
@@2SpareTyres it sure is, although Holme moss just off the woodhead is my clear favourite although these days it's due to the ice cream van usually parked at the top.
😂
The Snake Pass should be on any serious motorcyclists Bucket List. Just ride it steady, enjoy the gorgeous bends and scenery and you will have a blast. If you want to enjoy another great Peak District road turn left towards Strines (Mortimer Road) at 11.27 minutes into the video. Recently resurfaced and fantastic ride bringing you out on the A616. About 8 miles of motorcycling heaven.😊
Good advice to follow for any road if you want to to get the most out of your ride.👍 I came down the Mortimer road on the way back from Scotland last year. Glad to hear its been resurfaced.
it's when they overtake the accident happens,
it's a very twisty road with poor vision.
Come on kids. I used to work up north for Ferodo they were forever bleating on about High Peak and snake pass. None of these are high or challenging. try Bourg Madame or the Gross Glockender if you want to test yourself both go over 10 thousand feet
You'll enjoy my next video as its the Grossglockner from a trip in June 👍
The Police have a plane on Snake Pass in the summer, and random points with the Police waiting for you once the plane has targeted you if they are less then happy with your riding /driving.
Nice to know
Bet you believed in covid as well???
I test rode the Multistrada V4S on this road a couple of runs and my order was placed great road.
Great bike, I had the Multistrada 1260s. Roads like this where made for the Multistrada 👍
I'm sure the road is better now than when I rode it in the 80's and vehicles are far safer and better equipped than in the past.
The road needs some work as parts have slipped away. No HGV's now but still the odd caravan to get past👍
👍
Is the road dangerous? Or is the way people drive dangerous?
The way they drive it👍
Named after The Snake Inn, now sadly no longer a pub. That's according to the book about the history of the pass.
👍
Snake pass has its moments.... We did it to tick an box on the way to the Lake district. However, after doing the the single tracks and Hard knot was a little boring doing it on the way back. Don't get me wrong, I love a ride, every opportunity I can get on the bike. And just to put this in perspective, Cumbria was my first .... I past my DAS 3 weeks ago.
👍
Lovely road , went up it two up with my wife on our way to Scotland, yep a 5 week tour and back down to the Isle of Man 😊 best thing ever sadly she can longer ride pillion anymore. So touring days over 😢
Your journey sounds amazing and the adventure you had together must be full of great memories. It's sad to hear that your wife can no longer ride with you.
Skidded on a muddy bend in the countryside when picking my girlfriend up from the station and flipped her off the back.
Gravel rash thighs etc and still married me but she never went on the bike again.......
@@fabianmckenna8197hope you are both well
@@Fred-Wilbury Absolutely........that was 50 years ago next month!
I went on to work as a despatch rider for thirty years leaving my wife to deal with all of my broken bones until my redundancy.

@@fabianmckenna8197 we did that journey in 2014 in our sixties it’s our 50th this summer . Glad you’re both together . Regards Fred
the snake pass got its name from when the duke of norfolk paid to have it built, his coat of arms has a snake in it.
👍
I don't ride a motorbike, but I enjoyed driving over the Snake Pass to Manchester, it's a much better drive than motorways, for me. sadly I cannot afford a car now and I miss the scenery already.
Driving Snake Pass from Manchester to Sheffield is certainly an alternative to motorways. The winding road, with its turns and scenic views is an experience everyone should try. Missing the scenery? Keep those memories alive! 👍
Snake pass! I ride regularly and the road you started on, leek road. Only because I live in the area.
Derbyshire has some great roads for everyone 👍
why is the thumbnail a photo of a motorcycle waiting on double yellow lines… 😅
As I got near to Sheffield I pulled off the main road and onto the access road for the Rivelin Dam. The is single track across he Dam and there is a nice spot at the other end to stop for a rest, No parking, hopped off the bike half way down engine still running and took a cheeky picture. The 20 minutes I was sat at the other end there was zero traffic on the Dam. Well spotted though 😊
@@2SpareTyres Ah OK he he
The Snake Pas was built by the duke of Devonshire whose symbol was a snake !
👍
Of course..
👍
There is nothing dangerous about snake Pass, I've ridden it may be three times in the past two years, and ridden sensibly and within your ability it's absolutely fine, in fact it's a lovely road with some great scenery, the problem is people riding on it like a bloody race track which it isn't, fools on two wheels will always be a problem 🤷🏻♂️
Yep, Totally agree. Nice road not to technical and a nice bit of scenery. 👍
Going to comment before watching, definitely ride the snake it's a beautiful bit ov road just don't race on it , well for the first time
👍
Great insight. The road is not that technical and only dangerous because of a few who treat it as a race track. Thanks for your point of view. 👍
I did it in a 38 ton artic no problem
👍
Woodhead pass is far more dangerous! Not many hgv’s use the snake, where as it’s full of them on the woodhead.
Did notice the lack of HGV's but still managed to get stuck behind a caravan 😂
When I rode it was quite disappointed many more difficult roads
Absolutely but you got to ride at least once. 👍
There's nothing wrong with it only some of the idiots who use it
Yep 👍
2:40 You left your camera behind
I know I had to go back and it was still there 😂
Anyone remember the name of the road near buxton that is really winding, sharpe bends and inclines and has, or had, one of those rc marianism mary statues in a little wooden thingy?
I'm sure someone will know where it is 👍
Sounds like Buxton end of cat and fiddle to me
Ya can't do snake at speed it's a nice ride if you're not a knob
Yes take your time and enjoy the ride. 👍
You are riding too fast for some bends, a few were not constant curves, be careful
👍 Noted
Snake Pass is nice - try Strines
I did it last year on the way back from Scotland. A viewer told me they have done some resurfacing, so may do it again this year. Thanks 👍
Have ridden the Snake Pass many times with no problem, riding sensibly... until my bike was stolen. Sob!!! If you think you're Valentino Rossi, you soon find out otherwise.
Sorry about you're bike and your right a sensible ride out no problems.👍
Hi, nice scenery, but as for the road itself it didn't seem a particularly arduous ride, the biggest problem seems to be dodging the potholes.
The road from Little River to Akaroa or the Takaka Hill road are far more challenging if you ever want a challenge. There is a 800m elevation change from Riwaka to the top of the pass.
ruclips.net/video/C77k1Sc2T0M/видео.htmlsi=RAH4Z83_6z3shA6R
Agree its not the most challenging road but made it in the UK top 10. 👍
@@2SpareTyres trying to think of a road in the UK that would come close to Takaka Hill.
Maybe the road to Applecross
Looks like any other road to me
Yep 👍
No such thing as a dangerous road.
Unless it's pothole-ridden.
Imagine that!!
Fair few pot holes and half a road in places, but its probably not dangerous if you stick to the speed limit 👍
Nicely put 👍
@@2SpareTyres Thank you, I was young did stupid now not so young do slow old grandad. But see the great grand kids every month. Live your life do not be a reason for the prats in government to ban are great life on the road.
Mate how do you think I got wise, I lived after doing stupid things. Riding is great good for the head not for the dead. Spock would say live long and prosper, me live long by keeping away from the boxes of death. Called cars.
Roads
? Bendy Roads 👍
Wow 😂
If you ride within both the speed limits and your skill set then none of these roads are particularly dangerous.
only dangerous if you speed kill your speed you should be ok
Good advice 👍
Lots of better roads than snake Pass
Absolutely 👍
...preferably not, there are sufficient numbers of lunatics on that road already.
👌
Woodhead is better
Nice one, I'm adding to a list of roads I haven't ridden in Derbyshire for a future ride.👍
Mate, lose that terrible music
Totally😂. Free from RUclips Library, On the hunt for some better free music if you know any good sites 👍
All in all, Snake Pass is a bit of a nothing burger. Every week I ride along roads far more complex than that here in New Zealand.
👍 Post a vid so I can see what you have in NZ
Totally agree I personally don't agree with that statement but some one has listed IT as such, so I thought lets answer the question. 😂😂😂
