    What's not actually known is this idea kind of already happened . In the early rounds of 2006 when the 3 part qualifying start . However in Q1 and. Q2 drivers had to complete their lap before the timer hit zero ( if they didn't they lap would be disallowed). even if drivers had started their lap before the clock hit zero seconds. However drivers and team compalined so from the 2006 French Grand Prix all timed laps in all qualifying segments started before the chequered flag would be valid . Also another bad qualifying format was the the two single lap aggregate time qualifying sessions run in early 2005.

    • @RacingAtHome
      @RacingAtHome 4 месяца назад

      On the two-lap qualifying, it's more in reaction to the first qualifying lap being essentially Qualifying Practice. Which was a waste of time. So at least it actually came from somewhere with some reasonable sense. As opposed to this.

    Personally I prefer IndyCar's road and street qualifying format of splitting the pack in two for two 10 minute Q1 sessions, the top 6 of each being sent to a single Q2 session, and the top 6 being sent to Q3. Gives 40 minutes of on track action with more drivers going all out due to there being fewer moving chicanes in their way and makes it easier to focus on specific drivers sending it.

    To avoid the traffic issues they could let some auto qualify on certain conditions or do some sort of bop (yeh I know) but the biggest issue I believe is still that one good result can make one driver far higher in the standings than they should be and points should be better distributed, or as this will upset those who only want top 6 to get points, they could do negative points below 10th 🤣

    Merry Christmas Will, I’m down for the sprin🤯t qualifying, I actually really like it. F1 should be praised for trying to make changes. I know 2012 was a stand alone season, but as fans, that is the sort of unpredictable action we’d love to see or the fairy tale of 2009. I know people don’t like bringing it up & I don’t particularly like Hamilton or Verstappen, but can you imagine what a let down it would’ve been, if 2021 finished under the safety car. Given how viciously intense that season was, it would’ve been a real anticlimax to finish behind the safety car. 2021 also goes as to why, we shouldn’t have more teams on the grid, if they’re only going to be filled with Latifi type drivers… Changes are needed, maybe even just getting rid of the big 3, would shake it up enough… 🤷‍♂️

    They could do something like Elimination Qualifying for Sprint Races; but it would be 1 session that takes up the whole 45 minutes, hour, however long Sprint Shootout is meant to be.
    And cars are eliminated in 2s or 3s periodically; far enough apart that you can go out and improve, but close enough together to have jeopardy over getting the lap in on your first go.

    Knew at the time it was going to be a shocker even before that first Q1 as the normal original 3 knockouts system was far , far better improvement on all the old qualifiers systems and far more consistent and should never be messed with the only exception is probably at tracks such as monza and maybe a spa at a push as they have almost oval like amounts off drafting so they alone might benefit from a one a a time single car single shot system like Indy 500 does it so to stop the weird after you style driving! Only question if you did it for monza is if the qualifying time is just a lap on its own or a set distance like Indy’s 4 laps in a row = qualifying time?

    Elimination qualifying sucked, the only things I'd change about the current qualifying system:
    - Perhaps eliminate an extra driver per session so it's just 8 cars in Q3
    -Award 3/2/1 pts. for the top 3 qualifiers or alternatively 2 pts. for pole.
    Since you mentioned sprints: I think they should move to the 10/8/6/5/4/3/2/1 point distribution normal races had in 2003-09 so there's more battles for the podium (or alternatively a 10/7/6... to reward a sprint winner more).

    The original sprint version ended much like this system did. Anyone out of the points just turning it down to save engines. If the park ferme rules are revised this year, the sprints might be better. I also like that they are limited in number and rotate around to keep some novelty. I wish they still had a Q3/race tire rule. Then we might see some mixed up grids from people sacrificing to win pole or coming from behind on mediums. The Q2 tire rules just ruined the action. When we have competive cars the knockout shines in Q3. Like Lando says, "Max ruins everything."

    • @andrewcarter9649

      Unfortunately the best we can hope for with sprints this year is reversed top 10 grids. There's a good reason the race on your Q3 tyres rule was dropped, the top teams didn't care but midfield drivers that made it in to the top 10 would find themselves disadvantaged for doing well. Punishing someone because they outqualified their competitors is a terrible idea.

    I still believe that the teams deliberately sabotaged the format because it required more tires and more laps to finish qualifying. They could've very well go out and still fight for those laps. The only thing you need to do is go faster. It doesn't matter whether you are next up or not. If you are 3 places up, you can still go out to do the lap to make sure you go ahead. Waiting for the timer to pass and go "well we did nothing but thats all we could do" was just a dumb take to have at the time. There were at least 4 drivers that could've improved their lap time in order to move to q3. But I just think the teams decided they wouldn't want to push further and make sure the format died in Australia.
