    Packing a wound with dirt is a temporary way to seal a wound and prevent blood loss, the soil activates a blood protein which then helps seal the wound. Obviously if not properly cleaned and treated after a while it would probably become infected but in the moment it can save your life.

    Someone mentioned Hacksaw Ridge as a movie, absolutely. In the book Marcus Luttrell speaks about how every time he went off a cliff or a grenade went off near him, he always found his gun right next to him. He even brings up the saying, "God Loves Medics". Hacksaw Ridge is a movie showing proof that God does love medics. I can't recommend that movie enough.

    • @LockeNarshe
      @LockeNarshe 3 года назад +6

      As a former combat medic, Hacksaw Ridge is a terrible movie. If it's just for mindless enjoyment, Hacksaw Ridge is a fine - if forgettable - film. If you're looking to learn about the real Desmond Doss like we had to as Pararescuemen, then the film is an affront to his legacy; a poor, self-aggrandizing representation of who Desmond Doss was and what it means to be an on-the-ground medic during war. The man was exceptional, no doubt, but this movie takes some insane liberties with his motivations, his personality, often ignoring the fear, confusion, anger and loss-of-control ones feels in these situations outside of when it was used as a cheap plot device. It spins the narratives to be way over-the-top patriotic and was made just to appease the masses of people whose only experiences of war come from Call of Duty and out-of-touch war films. The movie is an embarrassment to us combat medics and trivializes so much of what it means to honor the creed 'That Others May Live'. Your reaction isn't at fault, most people simply don't know any better - this is just arguably the worst "popular" movie in terms of putting yourself in the shoes of a medic at war.

    Magy, I attended a seminar where Marcus Luttrell told his remarkable story. The way that each of those soldiers died in this movie, is the same way they died in real life. Right down to the multiple bullet wounds, shrapnel, and broken bones. Michael Murphy received the Medal of Honor for climbing up on the peak, calling in help, and getting killed up there. Marcus actually crawled for 7 miles before being helped by the villagers. The only combat part of this movie that didn't happen in real life was the knife fight at the end.

    Magy, LT Michael Murphy received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions that day, including climbing up to the top of the mountain to call in rescue.
    The morning after I arrived in Afghanistan, I walked into the Joint Operations Center (JOC), the very one the Commander of those SEALs worked in, and heard over the radio the moment the helo (helicopter) trying to rescue Marcus Luttrell got shot down by the RPG. On July 4th we had the memorial service for those killed in the attack on the helo. It was a sobering time for all in attendance.
    Marcus did actually die when he was brought in to the hospital at Bagram AB, but was revived and stabilized be c ore being medevac'd out of country. He is alive today, amd lives in my home state, Texas, with a lot of land for him to relax on. He has flown the Afghani man, the one who saved him, over to Texas many times. I think it is once a year, but can't recall for sure. Last I heard Marcus was still actively working on getting the man and his family moved from Afghanistan to Texas as refugees, but it is still a work in progress.
    This movie was incredibly intense, amd while you had difficulty with a lot of scenes, I must add a Bravo Zulu for making it through til the end. Yes, at the end those were real photos and videos of the men who were with Marcus on that mountain, that day.

    • @Pecos1
      @Pecos1 3 года назад +3

      @@engineer4854 they needed to move fast, and hostages would've slowed them down. The decision was whether to tie them up and cause them to possibly be killed by the elements, neutralize them and high-tail it, or let them go and hope they reach the extraction point prior to the villagers reaching the Taliban.
      If they had neutralized the two villagers, it would have been a war crime under the Geneva Convention, and they would've been either imprisoned for the crime, or shot by firing squad. Purposely taking innocent life has its consequences. Something the US mainstream media made sure the civilian populace never knew so they (the MSM) could report on for a long time and use one event to turn the public against its own protectors. I know, because the MSM did it to me and my unit. Bad guys doing bad things ended up having a very bad day, but within FIVE minutes CNN was on the scene, and reported back to the US that American Forces had just killed 26 children. There were no children anywhere near the location, and no collateral damage of ANY kind. Just 23 dead terrorists thanks to two 500lb smart bombs. It was a surgical strike, NONE of the surrounding houses amd buildings received any damage. SMH

    10 minutes later he came back in and took a big drink out of his beer and said, "We have to get out of here." After leaving we headed
    towards the main gate to get off base and as we walked away I could see the three marines still lying on the ground trying to recover.

    Keep in mind that some of the details of this operation are disputed. According to Mohammed Gulab, the Afghan who saved Marcus, the reason the Taliban were on them so quickly and in great numbers is because they noticed them the moment they touched down in the choppers, and they stalked the SEALs until their engagement. I can't remember where I read this, but I remember that there was much that Gulab said that conflicts with the book, which itself conflicts with official reports and intelligence.

    Operation Red Wings (Which was the name of the Op in Lone Survivor) was a complete shitshow to begin with from start to finish. Namely the fact that the recon team was deployed so far away without adequate support or numbers. They were underequipped as well none of the initial team having a belt-fed machine gun and Admrial McCraven's inability nor willingness for effective operational oversight. Not letting the teams operate how they needed to to be effective.

    This was the first of three true story movies that Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg teamed up for. The next one is called Deepwater Horizon that was released in 2016 and is about the BP oil rig that blew up in the Gulf of Mexico back in 2020, and stars Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson, John Malkovich, and Gena Rodriguez. Then in 2017 they teamed up again for Patriots Day about the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013, and stars John Goodman, Kevin bacon, and JK Simmons. High recommend both of them

    9:07 "They seem pretty tired, at this point."
    Learning how to get by in the US Armed Forces often depends, in no small part, in knowing how to fight one's own _fatigue._ I remember, I shipped off to _Navy_ Boot Camp in February, '99. At boot camp, every single night, lights out was at 2200 (or 10:00 pm) and reveille was at 0400 (or 4:00 am), so one could _never_ count on more than six hours of sleep a night.
    Unfortunately, it happened once in a while, that one had a two-hour _watch_ at some point, during the night. That would knock it down to _four_ hours. The occasional, unfortunate soul would have the 0000 to 0200 watch, so one could get two hours of sleep _before_ and two hours _after._ That was it.

    what i wondered about in this movie is that it seems like there was another choice - tie everyone up but NOT to a tree - so that it takes a while for the kids to get free. and maybe make the binding on the kids less strong but the binding on the man very strong so that it would take a while for the kids to untie themselves and then much longer to untie the man. that could've bought them the time they needed to get out unseen.

    15:44 These are _Apache_ helicopters. If you're transporting troops, you need _Chinook_ helicopters, because they're the ones who actually _carry_ the troops. But they're vulnerable to _attack,_ so you also need _Apache_ helicopters, because they're the _maneuverable_ ones equipped with weapons to fire _back._ They keep the heat _off_ the Chinooks.
    Apaches cannot transport troops on their own, because they're literally not _equipped_ to transport troops. But Chinooks are not typically well advised to transport troops without the _support_ of Apaches.

    He wasn't telling them where the base was. They already know where we had all our bases, and outposts. It's their land. They knew it better than us. He was telling his people where he was, so that they could come get him.
    In this vein, my favorites are this movie, 13 Hours, and Outpost.

    @9:15 They have to move. They were dropped off the helicopters far away from the site they actually going. Helicopters can't go too close to the target area because their noise will warn the enemies. And they can be heard quite far away because the rocky mountains echo their sound. So yeah, they close closer to the area but stay like 10 miles away and walk the rest of the way.

    Peter Berg also did Patriot's Day with Mark Wahlberg as well. One of the movies that inspired me to get a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice and try to be a police officer. It's a movie about the Boston Marathon Bombing. Mark Wahlberg is technically the main character but his character was fictionalized and added in alongside the real people and names to tell the story but I highly recommend it.
    You should also watch Peter Berg's movie "Hancock." It stars Will Smith as a really powerful but drunk super-hero type character.

    1:27 Every branch of the US Armed Forces has their _elite._ Other countries as well. In the UK, they have the Special Air Service. In Russia, they have the Spetsnaz. But I don't know nearly as much about them, so I'll only speak with a touch of authority on _our_ elite fighters.
    Elite fighters train a _lot_ longer. They consistently meet higher physical _fitness_ standards. Their initial period of training before they're assigned to _field_ units is typically close to a year. In the Army, they're the Special Forces (also known as the Green Berets). In the Navy, they're the SEALs. In the Marine Corps, they're the Force Recon. In the Air Force, they're the Combat Control Technicians and Pararescue Jumpers. In the Coast Guard, they're the Maritime Safety & Security Teams (MSSTs).
    They're not _occupation_ forces, though. They don't train or equip to invade and occupy. They train and equip to covertly _infiltrate,_ hit a given _target,_ and then covertly _exfiltrate._ That's it. Odds are, if elite fighters deploy to the city where _you_ live, you will never _know._ They will elude detection the _whole_ time.
    Their _training,_ though, _unavoidably_ has a high washout rate. And it's not just that they set up the training to test trainees' _mettle._ It's _also_ that they constantly _watch_ you during training, and every time it looks like your resolve might be failing, there's a trainer there, offering you the opportunity to quit and go do something _else._
    That's what we're seeing, here.
