The guy who the movie was about (Marcus luttrell) even said himself while watching the filing for the movie he said the shit the stunt guys were doing was way more insane than the shit he was doing in the seals.
RIP Axe. His death got me the most. Marcus has talked multiple times about how much of a fighter axe was. In the movie he was shot in the back of the head but in the book he was actually shot in the temple. Marcus was a medic and said in all his years witnessing military medicine he had no idea how axe was still talking to him. Yet he still was fighting. He said “when you see someone fight like that man… there’s no excuse for anything you do.”

As an Australia who grew up legit Huck Finn with a .22 rifle and a cheap mountainbike, who then lived in Texas for abit over a year, I can attest to how tough US soldiers are.
The actual Marcus Luttrell had a cameo twice. The first was him wearing the beanie telling Patterson to “clean up” after intentionally spilling the coffee on the table. And the second time was for a split second of him on the QRF when they prepped for their attempt to rope down. Also, the final battle never happened. The Taliban did attempt to behead Marcus but the whole village intervened. That did happen. The Taliban then threatened the village before leaving but never showed up.
This is not true. Marcus Luttrell and other service members themselves have said in interviews and in their books that the final battle to rescue Luttrell was even bigger and more intense then in this movie and that they had to cut it down for the movies sake. Luttrell was also in the scene where they are prepping their gear for the operation.

What blows my mind is Marcus was on set for a majority of the filming as an advisor. He kept things grounded and as close to the real events as possible. The stuntmen of this film has the option to reduce the severity of their falls but chose not to so they could stay true to how things actually went down. It’s truly insane what these dudes went through.
As a Veteran myself I think I can answer your question regarding "How the kept going". 2 reasons. The extreme training teaches them to literally NEVER quit & that they are far superior to the Enemy. 2nd reason, (this goes for all frontline combat troops) they will NEVER leave or let down the Men next to them. It's a Bond & a Brotherhood that could never really be grasped by civilians. True Warriors will give their life gladly for the Man next to him. This relationship is for life. Soldiers who have fought together are connected by blood, sweat & tears & will honor that Brotherhood till death.
3rd reason would be the straight up survival mode kicking in. No matter how well one is trained to control it, there oughta be extreme levels of Adrenaline and Cortisol floating through ones Body during an engagement such as this numbing the pain and hardening the muscles

The guy who helped Marcus went through hell after this happened, the taliban tried to kill him on multiple occasions, he eventually got to the US with his family. I read that he had a falling out with Marcus over money but don't know how accurate that is or if they have reconciled. An amazing story.
Apparently they had a falling out because he contradicted Marcus’ story account. The whole event seems like it was just a big SNAFU, I’ve read that there was excessive hubris on the SEAL’s part and that there were too many irons in the fire higher up. Additionally, it seems the SEAL’s had been discovered before they even left the bird if you watch the video of the actual firefight. From that same video it seems there were around a dozen fighters. They knew the area, had massive firepower, and had the initiative from the get go. Combine that with the poor mission planning and the outcome doesn’t seem so far fetched. According to one report, the Marines were supposed to handle the mission with A LOT more personnel as they knew what they could’ve faced up there.

@@TenTonNuke That's probably the best answer. Personally I would have shot them each in the leg but if they are close enough to be spotted then it's too close to be letting them go outright. If they are that close to the camp then they are close enough that being tied up is close enough to found by patrols or other sheep farmers.
From the interviews I've seen with Marcus this movie is toned down from what really happened. He talks about his back being broken from the last fall and he arm crawled a few inches at a time for miles before he was found by the villagers
He was also found to have every single round of ammunition still in his mags when he was finally picked up. And it was a maximum of 12 dudes who ambushed them, not the hundreds claimed by Luttrell or the movie.

@@ValionSix I seriously doubt that a navy seal would not shoot back if he was being fired at, and his best friends were being shot all around him. And 12 Taliban would not be able to kill a team of highly trained and experienced navy seals, and take down a Chinook helicopter and fight a village of people protecting him.
@@dastemplar9681 according to the gentleman who saved Luttrell he had all his magazines in their pouches and they were all fully loaded. There was a book written by Ed Darak called Victory Point about the Marines involved in that area of Afghanistan at that period of time (it was a Marine mission but using SoF assets such as the SEAL unit) where he interviewed numerous Marines who were involved in the planning, intelligence, and post operations phases of Red Wings and the firefight that occurred between the SEALs and Ahmad Shah's men. He also gained access to pre and post mission intelligence papers as well. The pre-mission intelligence the Marines had gathered stated Shah only had between 8-12 men total. The post firefight cleanup found no enemy bodies besides a couple of the SEALs. Shah also had the firefight filmed by two of his men (I think this is actually on RUclips if you wish to search it out I watched it here) and the largest number of men that can be seen at a single time in view of the camera is I think 8 men. Meanwhile Luttrell's accounts of the numbers of enemy troops has increased every time he has talked about it starting from like 35 to the now 200 plus stated in the Lone Survivor book.
@@dastemplar9681 Luttrell is hardly a reliable source. His claim that Lt. Murphy put executing the civilians to a vote has been widely dismissed as fiction. Plus Mohammed Gulab (the villager who saved Luttrell) said that the villagers found no Taliban bodies when searching the mountain (a Marine Colonel involved in the rescue operation also said there were no enemy casualties). Intelligence reports after the battle also estimated around 8-10 Taliban were present which is backed up by videos the Taliban shot during the battle which showed only 7 were present.
You should watch The Outpost. It's another Afghanistan movie that is the true story of two Medal of Honor winners from the same battle. As a former grunt I can also tell you it's incredibly realistic.
Marcus Luttrell is the Seal that lived. He was on set for the movie to make it as real to the real story as it was possible. He talked about this in several interviews. He also does a few talks where he tells the story of what happened that day. You guys should watch those videos and see what kind of person he was and the men he works with.
This is part of a trilogy of films that Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg did together. The others are Deepwater Horizon (about the BP oil rig explosion) and Patriots Day (about the Boston marathon bombing). I highly recommend the other two, Patriots Day especially is my favourite, and would love to see your reactions.
The fact that Matthew Axelson was shot in the temple and lost his sight, yet he managed to empty all of his clips and continued to fight was beyond heroic. God bless all of the heroes that fought for our freedom.
When I was a firearms instructor back in the day, I had the privilege of meeting the real Marcus Luttrell. For us veterans, he is an inspiration and icon.
Marcus had a yellow Lab therapy dog he named Dasy - an acronym for Deitz, Axelson, and Murphy. Two guys shot and killed Dasy and Marcus chased them down. The fact they lived to face justice is a tribute to the character of Marcus Luttrell. Marcus named his first born son Axe.
The best line is "such vivid reds" Thats such a real moment. When things are going really bad in combat, you'd be surprised what silly, random thoughts pop into your head. Dude's hand is blown off and hes thinking about the wall paper color samples his wife been stressing him over...Just an amazing, subtle moment that i think a lot of people dont notice in this flick. The scene is too intense to even care, honestly. Emile Hirsch is the man.
if you watch the footage from the taliban you can hear deitz and murphy together because danny was the only one without a suppressed weapon and you can hear his rifle stop firing and murphys keep going so obviously marcus was not with him cause he was with axe.

I was on my second deployment when this happened. At the time it was the biggest loss in SEAL history. Very sad. I’m not sure what would have happened if they chose another option but Politics played a role in this outcome. I read the book during my third deployment and I could not put it down. It’s a must read!!! Two notes: look how many men the enemy lost just to take out three SEALs. And Marcus is still good friends with the man who basically saved his life. He flies him to his ranch in Texas. Love your two!!! Keep the great reactions coming!!!
I was born and still in Long Island, NY. I went to my aunts funeral a few years back. The funeral house had a memorial portrait for Michael Murphy. It was impactful. Like, he could have been one of my friends that just happened to live down the street. And he lived such a courageous and selfless life.
Marcus is still friends with this guy and has brought him to the states to visit his ranch. And if you guys make it past the end credits without tearing up I'll be surprised.
As far as I know, they are not friends today. Ghulab started denying that it happened like Marcus portrays and Marcus believes that Ghulab is being threatened into what he is saying. It should be said that Marcus' account of what happens is disputed by a few people.
The ordeal was actually longer, I believe about 5 - 7 days, in reality with Marcus escaping several times. The deaths of Danny, he was not left alone on top of the cliff, and Murph, screaming Marcus’ name in real life, were changed in the movie. The book is so amazing.
Marcus Luttrell made a cameo in the movie, he was sitting at the bench with everyone wearing the black beanie and spilt the coffee and told the new navy seal recruit to clean it up. American Sniper is also a good movie and the Outpost

While I was at MCT, me and my battle buddy were doing our land nav course at Camp Pendleton. We had to scale a large hill and walk about half a mile to our objective, once we got there, we looked at our map and found that our next point was over a mile in the reverse direction. Running out of time we decide to scale down a run off that would take us directly to our point. My battle buddy was moving down first when the sand gave way and he lost his footing and began tumbling down; followed by the sand giving way a second later, sending me down. We both were able stop ourselves just a few feet before it dropped off. Once we were on the road, the scene where they were tumbling down the mountain side began playing in my head, obviously nothing compared to what they went through.
This is a Hollywood version of 28/06/2005 Sawtalo Sar in the Shuryek Valley. The goat herder narrative is BS and never happened. It was inserted into the book to question the ROE by the Ghost writer Patrick Robinson and Luttrell who hates the ROE. The reality is they walked directly into an ambush set by 8 anti coalition militia. There were no casualties on the ACM side and Luttrell was recovered at Salar Ban ( 1.5 km south of the peak) with all his ammo and minor injuries. I have an hour of footage shot by Shah before, during and after this day and have posted some of it on my channel. Everyone who was there on SAR knows this is a fabricated version ( Including Gulab) and sadly the firefight was over very quickly for Dietz and Murphy who were closest to Shahs men. The one person who did not leave the AO and fought by himself to the very end was Mathew Gene Axelson. Axe may have been alive up to 24 hours and there were shell casings all around his body. At one point they try to coax him out but his reply was 5.56 hard pass. ...Luttrell was long gone by then on his way down the gulch with all his ammo What is unknown is how Shah knew they were coming. There ids footage of them preparing and leaving the village on the Korengal side of the peak and moving toward the summit. I have an interview with shah where he states the Americans always go the the highest point, but its still unclear how he knew he was a target and that they were coming. Either way, this is the single worst operation of the war and there were some very good men lost. On a side note, this BS version passively blamed Murphy using a BS story for letting 'goat herders' go who were never there in the first place, but if they were it would hav4e taken 12 hours for them to summit. I've since privatized 4 speeches made by the survivor because if the treatment of Gulab after he disputed the account.
Unfortunately it's not. In the years since there has been a lot of analysis of what happened. I'm sure Marcus thought there were over a hundred guys they were fighting. The best description I heard was from a Ranger who was there for the recovery and search. His guess was around 12 to 15 insurgents were involved. The big problem was the terrain. The were basically in the bottom of a V or a funnel... called a draw. The SEALS were taking fire from above and from all angles. They did fall down the hill a couple of times. Murphy did crawl out on the rock and was shot. What we don't see or hear is Murphy screaming Marcus's name when he was being encircled and had no where to go. Marcus couldn't save him. Marcus and Axe, although split up both made it quite a distance before Axe died of his wounds and Marcus found the water above the village. I know one thing for sure... I've seen Marcus multiple times giving speeches about his experience... there's no doubt the he was busted up physically. I do not like the people who say he dropped his magazines and hauled ass. That's just not true. I'm sure after all the trauma he went through that his memory is that a hundred guys were shooting at them at the same time.
The film did insanely well with the ballistic sound design, the depiction of the feeling of bein stranded in this lonely place, the impact these injuries have on the individuals once the Adrenaline and Cortisol levels in the blood die down and it showed the gear in a realistic way (NVGs that dont illuminate the entire globe under bad lighting conditions radios that dont always work...)
Your comments about them being on a 4 man recon mission before everything hit the fan is extremely relevant to understanding a lot of Generation Kill. The Marines in that show are Recon Marines and the bread and butter of 1st Recon is doing what the Seals were doing here. But for the Iraq invasion, the Marine Corps sent 1st Recon Battalion out in a humvees in front of the whole division. So a lot of what you are watching there has to do with misuse of assets and the lack of supplies are because were trained primarily to do a whole different mission than what they got sent on. If you remember in one episode, one of the Recon Marines sketches the scene similar to here in Lone Survivor.
It all boils down to force recon being special operations capable not special operations force so they still fall under command of the Marines and get their missions instead of SOCOM and their missions with the seals, delta, raiders, etc.
I've met Marcus. It was at an Astros game in 2010 about 5 years after the events of this incident. Got an autograph on my copy of the book "Lone Survivor" and a photograph with him. It remains to this day, the best book I've ever read in my life. I have also shared my condolences and thanks to Michael Murphy's father on facebook which he replied to. He was so gracious and thanked me for remembering "his buddy boy". There are so many things I would like to say, but 3 things especially. 1. The book is 10X better than the film and the film is pretty amazing. 2. The events as shown in the film actually doesn't do justice to much of the story. Marcus crawled something close to SEVEN MILES from the spot the battle took place to the pool Gulab found him. 3. Marcus crawled that far after sustaining the following injuries/wounds. 3 broken vertebra, multiple RPG/Grenade fragment wounds, shot in the back, shoulder torn out, knees destroyed, severe facial damage including a broken nose, broken pelvis, bit his tongue in half, destroyed thumb, serious skin abrasions on his back and legs, and to top it off a bacterial infection from drinking rancid water.
@Jay S. There are conflicting accounts. I'm just going by what we know sir. Three men on the ground and 16 in the helicopter died that day. One survived and the wounds described above occurred. And if he had never written his "bullshit" neither one of us would know any specifics about the heroism of his teammates from that day. Your comments here are unnecessary. They do dishonor to the memory of the 19 who died and the 1 who survived...all of whom served with distinction and honor.
26:35 Still one of my favorite scenes, fictional or not. The villagers coming to protect him is such a powerful scene. Not all of them are Taliban. There were and are many of them who oppose the Taliban no matter the cost.
Yep. People forgot how popular anti-Taliban sentiment in Afghanistan really was, to the point where prior to the U.S Invasion, the Northern Alliance controlled the entire Northern Region of the country. It's a shame we left a client state to die. The Taliban didn't win the war because they had the support, they won the war because the Islamic Republic was too weak. Their government and military was too dependent on the United States, and as a result they just couldn't withstand the counteroffensive.
I feel that breathing sound bit so hard too. Not only from having a collapsed lung (twice) but also from having to watch a family member pass away while breathing like that (sorry for being so dark). It's a sound that stays with you forever and always manages to trigger
This movie makes me cry. It perfectly illustrates why we went to Afghanistan in the first place and how the government epically, like apocalypticly screwed up leaving. The people like the villagers who helped are now slaves and being killed because political officials being run by an old man with mush for brains was allowed to hold power. Sad.
Look up the details on John A. Chapman and his being awarded the Medal of Honor. He is another example of the tough warfighters that we have. His book is "Alone at Dawn". Well worth the read.
The Falling down the Mountain scene: Stunt Coordinators and Stunt Men were discussion how to do it, what safety precautions could be used, camera tricks etc, in the end on of the stunt guys decided to just pad up lightly and hauled himself down the slope. "sometimes the best way is to not overthink it and just go for it"
Not only is Lone Survivor an exceptional film , the soundtrack which featuring a collaboration between Texas post-rock band Explosions in the Sky and Steve Jablonsky is insanely great

I strongly recommend reading the book, it explains how real many of the scenes you saw, particularly the fall down the mountain, were. However, Marcus was far worse off than what was shown. He actually dragged himself for miles because his legs were broken. You should also check out the documentary Murph The Protector. It really explains how beloved Mike Murphy truly was. The movie is devastating to watch in general, but harder when you’ve read the book or seen Murph because they were very real people with real lives and families. Marcus was adamant about portraying how great his team was while minimizing what he endured. Thank you for this reaction, it is a great movie and helps people appreciate our military and their sacrifices.
This was filmed in New Mexico near where I grew up which has almost identical terrain to a lot of Afghanistan. A friend of a friend knows Marcus and I had the chance to go shooting with them here in Texas but I couldn't make it. Massive regret.
They also shot a lot it in Mountain High, California. About 30min from my house. I remember I was going camping while they were shooting the film, and they had a lot of the roads blocked off; at the time I didnt know they we're shooting this movie.
They did really well to capture how these men kept fighting with every but of warrior they have in them. Watch some of Marcus Luttrell's interviews and stuff. He is the real Seal that survived. He went back to combat after all of this when he recovered.
So from what I’ve heard from guys in the navy and read. Marcus tried to reveal any detail he legally could to make it the real thing. Like for example the guy they were after they didn’t use his real name in the movie because it was still a classified mission. He wasn’t found in a pond or given shelter with a roof he was kept by the villagers in a cave and yea that clean water bottle he drank out of. He actually drank out of a dirty coke bottle someone found with well water in it. Probably wasn’t much of a talker either because he bit off his tongue during the fall.

First of all I really enjoy your videos. I read the book first and the chapters on the Navy Seal BUDs training are so intense! They only touch on them in the opening credit sequence. Also their impossible choice on the mountain was gut wrenching. Give the book a tumble. You can see the real Marcus in the scene around the picnic table in the beginning scenes
From Marcus luttrell's 2 part speech, this movie is tame compared to the real events. An example would be Mat Axleson. Instead of being shot in the back of the head, he took a round to the side of the face. In Marcus's words, "The only thing I recognized on him was his bottom lip". Completely blinded, he patched his face with a pressure bandage, and continued to fight, doing so long after he and Marcus were separated. In total, he walked and crawled a total of 7 miles, unable to see, firing in the general direction of the enemy, until his ammunition finally ran dry. Just that example puts into perspective the level of individual toughness and Grit that each man had. While its horrifying to think someone went through these events, it's also a source of inspiration for many people, myself included. If ever I have a bad day, I think about Red Wings. "Marcus had a worse day, and he's living his best life now. keep moving"
Read Marcus Luttrell's book on this incident and watch on online the TV interviews he did regarding this incident. Years after this movie a TV news program that did a story on how Marcus has had the villager who saved his life over at his big ranch at home in Texas at least twice to hang out and go shooting. Regarding the physical and mental resililiance of Navy SEALs in the movie, you see from the footage at the beginning how crazy difficult the training was and how very few candidates make it. Only a special breed of person can make the SEALs.

I've never understood this... OPTION #4: Take them with you till you get comms, successfully call for extract, set extract point, & THEN LET THEM GO! It's always driven me crazy why no one suggests that. If you take them with you till you make comms, by the time they get back to the village & back up, you're gone! I know it's harder to think in those conditions, but if one guy had that idea in that moment, 19 special operators would've lived (3 with Luttrell & the 16 in the Chinook)! This is still my favorite movie/book/story of all time. These guys are the most badass, brave, & tough guys to ever walk the earth. We're so lucky that we have guys like these that choose to live through hell while training & in combat to fight for us & our freedom! Please never take these Heroes for granted! 4:42 if you guys don’t know, the guy with the beanie is who this movie is based on. He is the real “Lone Survivor” of Operation Red Wings. A team of four Navy SEALs, tasked for surveillance and reconnaissance of a group of structures known to be used by Shah and his men, fell into an ambush by Shah and his group just hours after inserting into the area by fast-roping from an MH-47 Chinook helicopter.[2] Three of the four SEALs were killed during the ensuing battle, and one of the two quick reaction force (QRF) helicopters sent in for their aid was shot down by an RPG-7 fired by Shah's insurgents, killing all eight U.S. Navy SEALs and all eight U.S. Army Special Operations aviators on board. The operation then became known as Red Wings II and lasted approximately three more weeks, during which time the bodies of the killed SEALs and Army Special Operations aviators were recovered and the only surviving member of the initial SEAL team, Marcus Luttrell, was rescued. That guy with the beanie, is Marcus Luttrell.
Have to remember, by the time Marcus got to the bottom. He had a shattered pelvis, broken femur and broken back. He was crawling feet at a time to get to the water he found. In an interview, Luttrell said it was the extreme thirst that ( among other things ) kept driving him forward.
Lived in Cupertino, California and they have a memorial for axe right there. And when you hear a collapsed lung or a torn up windpipe before you're dying we breathe like that. Trust me after facing that in reality even a person snoring will give you nightmares

Always crazy when you remember that this is a true story (I'm sure there are some parts of the narrative and events that have been exposed to creative license, but still)! What must that experience have been like?!
1. Director Peter Berg is the braintrust behind the tv series Friday Night Lights. 2. Taylor Kitsch played Tim Riggins in FNL 3. When I was going through Morse Code training I met a Seal doing his advanced training and I shook his hand. It was like shanking hands with a statue. First thing through my head was, "I'm glad he's on my team". 4. GOOF: Plot hole. From the shepherd boy to the first attack was far to quickly to be that organized and armored.
I remember putting this on because I like the cast. I understood the title meant it was highly likely that all but 1 survived. But the brutal way it went about it I was not expecting.
"Shoot and move" at 16:01. Usually referred to as bounding overwatch. One element shoots while the other moves; the movement group gets set, and they become the over watch (shooting), so the other element can now move. In the army, we call this battle drill 3 or "breaking contact ".
If you like Peter berg you should watch patriots day and deep water horizon both directed by him and both starring mark whalberg. He does a really good job directing movies based on true events
A portion of this movie was filmed in New Mexico. Marcus Luttrell was the individual in the beanie at the picnic table and seen in the helicopter that got shot down. Just a FYI. Majority of the photos are actual photos of Service Members killed in Operation Red Wing.
Probably the most realistic injuries I have ever seen in a movie. I understand that the reconstruction of the events is quite real, since it was supervised while filming by Marcus himself, who also makes some cameos in the film, it is the boy with the beard and sunglasses. The director were also based on forensic reports, so each of the wounds these soldiers receive is as it was in the real battle.They have to react to more Peter Berg movies, I recommend from his filmography: Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon (these 2 movies also with Mark Wahlberg) and The Kingdom.
Movie trivia: The man in the beanie and sunglasses at 04:43 is the real Marcus Luttrell. He consulted every aspect of the choreography in this movie based on what he remembered living through.

I'm Australian and turn 40 in August, and travelled through Texas in April 2001, first place randomly found the rebuilt Waco church, (Ironically i wanted to and did visit the Kennedy Museum) and then actually found a small town north in this community similar to the Luttrell's. Young guys looking for selection. I'd already solo-hiked through Oregon and Washington state, part fishing mixed with mac n cheese :) these guys are a way differnt level to my hippy skills. :P
I can only recommend all the movies in the, what I call, "Berg/Wahlberg based on true evens trilogy", consisting of "Lone Survivor", "Deepwater Horizon" and "Patriots Day". All three movies are great and worth watching. The latter two are even better than Lone Survivor in my opnion.
Marcus Lattrell was on Joe Roman's podcast not too long ago, you guys should definitely check it out. The real events were far more intense than what the movie portrayed. Great reaction
Unlike the movie portrays, they already knew they were there because they weren’t quiet about their landing. So killing them or letting them go would’ve have done anything
Danny Dietz got the worst of it. He was shot in the..... Left ankle Right Calf Right thigh Groin Right thumb(once his right thumb got blown off early in the battle he had to shoot lefty) 2 times in the stomach 2 times in the throat 3 times in the head Not only was he shot 12 times he jumped off the mountain 2 or 3 times(cant recall which of the 2 it was) and he broke his back and broke both of his legs. After he broke his legs the other 3 guys had to carry or drag him from that point on. This was a running battle for over 2 hours before 3 of the 4 were finally killed.
This came out while I was in Kandahar. I thought if Luttrell can get through all that, I can do a measly 8 months. The book is sad but very inspirational.
In the falling down the mountain, Mike Murphy bit off half of his tongue he was rolling down so badly. You both gave a great reaction to this movie. I will successive and will keep watching you.
While I very much don't support our occupation of the middle east - I absolutely love this film. It definitely speaks to the resiliency of the human spirit, and that as long as you're still breathing you can't give up. I watched an interview with Marcus where among other things he talked about the injuries he sustained. He said they left a lot out of the film, one thing being that he spent weeks in the town recovering waiting to be rescured and continuing to fight off the Taliban - rather than a day. Most notably however was that his treak to that town. He said he had broken his back in more than one place and couldn't actually walk - so he drew a line with a rock in the dirt and crawled to it and if he was still alive when his feet crossed the line he did it again. He said he did this for 7 miles.
Man o man did I love air assault missions. Especially in the dead of night while waiting for it to land. It's cold as hell in the bird. It's loud but quite as no one talks. You just stare at each other and say a prayer before you land. The good Ole days
Director Peter Berg used the autopsy reports of the men to accurately depict the he'll they went through. Mike Murphy was wearing a patch from a New York Fire Department engine company to remind him why he and his fellow soldiers were in Afghanistan.
A powerful true story and movie that showcases some of the most extreme resiliency we have ever witnessed!

RIP Axe. His death got me the most. Marcus has talked multiple times about how much of a fighter axe was. In the movie he was shot in the back of the head but in the book he was actually shot in the temple. Marcus was a medic and said in all his years witnessing military medicine he had no idea how axe was still talking to him. Yet he still was fighting. He said “when you see someone fight like that man… there’s no excuse for anything you do.”

The actual Marcus Luttrell had a cameo twice. The first was him wearing the beanie telling Patterson to “clean up” after intentionally spilling the coffee on the table. And the second time was for a split second of him on the QRF when they prepped for their attempt to rope down.
Also, the final battle never happened. The Taliban did attempt to behead Marcus but the whole village intervened. That did happen. The Taliban then threatened the village before leaving but never showed up.
While there wasn’t a battle, I believe they tried to sneak in at night to take him. That failed, obviously. Lol

Marcus Luttrell and other service members themselves have said in interviews and in their books that the final battle to rescue Luttrell was even bigger and more intense then in this movie and that they had to cut it down for the movies sake. What blows my mind is Marcus was on set for a majority of the filming as an advisor. He kept things grounded and as close to the real events as possible. The stuntmen of this film has the option to reduce the severity of their falls but chose not to so they could stay true to how things actually went down. It’s truly insane what these dudes went through.
As a Veteran myself I think I can answer your question regarding "How the kept going". 2 reasons. The extreme training teaches them to literally NEVER quit & that they are far superior to the Enemy. 2nd reason, (this goes for all frontline combat troops) they will NEVER leave or let down the Men next to them. It's a Bond & a Brotherhood that could never really be grasped by civilians. True Warriors will give their life gladly for the Man next to him. This relationship is for life. Soldiers who have fought together are connected by blood, sweat & tears & will honor that Brotherhood till death.
3rd reason would be the straight up survival mode kicking in. No matter how well one is trained to control it, there oughta be extreme levels of Adrenaline and Cortisol floating through ones Body during an engagement such as this numbing the pain and hardening the muscles

The guy who helped Marcus went through hell after this happened, the taliban tried to kill him on multiple occasions, he eventually got to the US with his family. I read that he had a falling out with Marcus over money but don't know how accurate that is or if they have reconciled. An amazing story.
Apparently they had a falling out because he contradicted Marcus’ story account. The whole event seems like it was just a big SNAFU, I’ve read that there was excessive hubris on the SEAL’s part and that there were too many irons in the fire higher up. Additionally, it seems the SEAL’s had been discovered before they even left the bird if you watch the video of the actual firefight. From that same video it seems there were around a dozen fighters.
They knew the area, had massive firepower, and had the initiative from the get go. Combine that with the poor mission planning and the outcome doesn’t seem so far fetched. According to one report, the Marines were supposed to handle the mission with A LOT more personnel as they knew what they could’ve faced up there.

@@TenTonNuke That's probably the best answer. Personally I would have shot them each in the leg but if they are close enough to be spotted then it's too close to be letting them go outright. If they are that close to the camp then they are close enough that being tied up is close enough to found by patrols or other sheep farmers.
From the interviews I've seen with Marcus this movie is toned down from what really happened.
He talks about his back being broken from the last fall and he arm crawled a few inches at a time for miles before he was found by the villagers
He was also found to have every single round of ammunition still in his mags when he was finally picked up. And it was a maximum of 12 dudes who ambushed them, not the hundreds claimed by Luttrell or the movie.

And 12 Taliban would not be able to kill a team of highly trained and experienced navy seals, and take down a Chinook helicopter and fight a village of people protecting him.
@@dastemplar9681 according to the gentleman who saved Luttrell he had all his magazines in their pouches and they were all fully loaded. There was a book written by Ed Darak called Victory Point about the Marines involved in that area of Afghanistan at that period of time (it was a Marine mission but using SoF assets such as the SEAL unit) where he interviewed numerous Marines who were involved in the planning, intelligence, and post operations phases of Red Wings and the firefight that occurred between the SEALs and Ahmad Shah's men. He also gained access to pre and post mission intelligence papers as well. The pre-mission intelligence the Marines had gathered stated Shah only had between 8-12 men total. The post firefight cleanup found no enemy bodies besides a couple of the SEALs. Shah also had the firefight filmed by two of his men (I think this is actually on RUclips if you wish to search it out I watched it here) and the largest number of men that can be seen at a single time in view of the camera is I think 8 men. Meanwhile Luttrell's accounts of the numbers of enemy troops has increased every time he has talked about it starting from like 35 to the now 200 plus stated in the Lone Survivor book.
@@dastemplar9681 Luttrell is hardly a reliable source. His claim that Lt. Murphy put executing the civilians to a vote has been widely dismissed as fiction. Plus Mohammed Gulab (the villager who saved Luttrell) said that the villagers found no Taliban bodies when searching the mountain (a Marine Colonel involved in the rescue operation also said there were no enemy casualties). Intelligence reports after the battle also estimated around 8-10 Taliban were present which is backed up by videos the Taliban shot during the battle which showed only 7 were present.
You should watch The Outpost. It's another Afghanistan movie that is the true story of two Medal of Honor winners from the same battle. As a former grunt I can also tell you it's incredibly realistic.

Marcus Luttrell is the Seal that lived. He was on set for the movie to make it as real to the real story as it was possible. He talked about this in several interviews. He also does a few talks where he tells the story of what happened that day. You guys should watch those videos and see what kind of person he was and the men he works with.

This is part of a trilogy of films that Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg did together. The others are Deepwater Horizon (about the BP oil rig explosion) and Patriots Day (about the Boston marathon bombing). I highly recommend the other two, Patriots Day especially is my favourite, and would love to see your reactions.
The fact that Matthew Axelson was shot in the temple and lost his sight, yet he managed to empty all of his clips and continued to fight was beyond heroic. God bless all of the heroes that fought for our freedom.
When I was a firearms instructor back in the day, I had the privilege of meeting the real Marcus Luttrell. For us veterans, he is an inspiration and icon.
This was great! You've got to watch 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi! It's such a power film, also based on a true story.
Marcus had a yellow Lab therapy dog he named Dasy - an acronym for Deitz, Axelson, and Murphy. Two guys shot and killed Dasy and Marcus chased them down. The fact they lived to face justice is a tribute to the character of Marcus Luttrell. Marcus named his first born son Axe.
The best line is "such vivid reds" Thats such a real moment. When things are going really bad in combat, you'd be surprised what silly, random thoughts pop into your head. Dude's hand is blown off and hes thinking about the wall paper color samples his wife been stressing him over...Just an amazing, subtle moment that i think a lot of people dont notice in this flick. The scene is too intense to even care, honestly. Emile Hirsch is the man.
Your next true story films should be 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, 12 Strong, and Zero Dark Thirty.
It's unfortunate that our GOV abandoned them during this time and people suffered because of it.
When Danny Deitz body was found, he'd been shot at least 9 times, and was on his last magazine ( last time Marcus saw him he had several mags left)
if you watch the footage from the taliban you can hear deitz and murphy together because danny was the only one without a suppressed weapon and you can hear his rifle stop firing and murphys keep going so obviously marcus was not with him cause he was with axe.

I was on my second deployment when this happened. At the time it was the biggest loss in SEAL history. Very sad. I’m not sure what would have happened if they chose another option but Politics played a role in this outcome. I read the book during my third deployment and I could not put it down. It’s a must read!!!
Two notes: look how many men the enemy lost just to take out three SEALs.
And Marcus is still good friends with the man who basically saved his life. He flies him to his ranch in Texas.

I was born and still in Long Island, NY. I went to my aunts funeral a few years back. The funeral house had a memorial portrait for Michael Murphy. It was impactful. Like, he could have been one of my friends that just happened to live down the street. And he lived such a courageous and selfless life.

Marcus is still friends with this guy and has brought him to the states to visit his ranch. And if you guys make it past the end credits without tearing up I'll be surprised.
As far as I know, they are not friends today. Ghulab started denying that it happened like Marcus portrays and Marcus believes that Ghulab is being threatened into what he is saying.
It should be said that Marcus' account of what happens is disputed by a few people.
Marcus told how when Gulab came for a visit, how much he loved cherry flavored Tums....ate them like candy.
The ordeal was actually longer, I believe about 5 - 7 days, in reality with Marcus escaping several times. The deaths of Danny, he was not left alone on top of the cliff, and Murph, screaming Marcus’ name in real life, were changed in the movie. The book is so amazing.

While I was at MCT, me and my battle buddy were doing our land nav course at Camp Pendleton. We had to scale a large hill and walk about half a mile to our objective, once we got there, we looked at our map and found that our next point was over a mile in the reverse direction. Running out of time we decide to scale down a run off that would take us directly to our point. My battle buddy was moving down first when the sand gave way and he lost his footing and began tumbling down; followed by the sand giving way a second later, sending me down. We both were able stop ourselves just a few feet before it dropped off. Once we were on the road, the scene where they were tumbling down the mountain side began playing in my head, obviously nothing compared to what they went through.
This is a Hollywood version of 28/06/2005 Sawtalo Sar in the Shuryek Valley. The goat herder narrative is BS and never happened. It was inserted into the book to question the ROE by the Ghost writer Patrick Robinson and Luttrell who hates the ROE.
The reality is they walked directly into an ambush set by 8 anti coalition militia. There were no casualties on the ACM side and Luttrell was recovered at Salar Ban ( 1.5 km south of the peak) with all his ammo and minor injuries. I have an hour of footage shot by Shah before, during and after this day and have posted some of it on my channel. Everyone who was there on SAR knows this is a fabricated version ( Including Gulab) and sadly the firefight was over very quickly for Dietz and Murphy who were closest to Shahs men.
The one person who did not leave the AO and fought by himself to the very end was Mathew Gene Axelson. Axe may have been alive up to 24 hours and there were shell casings all around his body. At one point they try to coax him out but his reply was 5.56 hard pass. ...Luttrell was long gone by then on his way down the gulch with all his ammo
What is unknown is how Shah knew they were coming. There ids footage of them preparing and leaving the village on the Korengal side of the peak and moving toward the summit. I have an interview with shah where he states the Americans always go the the highest point, but its still unclear how he knew he was a target and that they were coming. Either way, this is the single worst operation of the war and there were some very good men lost.
On a side note, this BS version passively blamed Murphy using a BS story for letting 'goat herders' go who were never there in the first place, but if they were it would hav4e taken 12 hours for them to summit. I've since privatized 4 speeches made by the survivor because if the treatment of Gulab after he disputed the account.

Unfortunately it's not. In the years since there has been a lot of analysis of what happened. I'm sure Marcus thought there were over a hundred guys they were fighting. The best description I heard was from a Ranger who was there for the recovery and search. His guess was around 12 to 15 insurgents were involved. The big problem was the terrain. The were basically in the bottom of a V or a funnel... called a draw. The SEALS were taking fire from above and from all angles. They did fall down the hill a couple of times. Murphy did crawl out on the rock and was shot. What we don't see or hear is Murphy screaming Marcus's name when he was being encircled and had no where to go. Marcus couldn't save him. Marcus and Axe, although split up both made it quite a distance before Axe died of his wounds and Marcus found the water above the village. I know one thing for sure... I've seen Marcus multiple times giving speeches about his experience... there's no doubt the he was busted up physically. I do not like the people who say he dropped his magazines and hauled ass. That's just not true.
I'm sure after all the trauma he went through that his memory is that a hundred guys were shooting at them at the same time.
The film did insanely well with the ballistic sound design, the depiction of the feeling of bein stranded in this lonely place, the impact these injuries have on the individuals once the Adrenaline and Cortisol levels in the blood die down and it showed the gear in a realistic way (NVGs that dont illuminate the entire globe under bad lighting conditions radios that dont always work...)
I really wish they had also told the story of the Army Rangers who hunted Lutrell down, through the mountains. Another heroic story of those men.
Your comments about them being on a 4 man recon mission before everything hit the fan is extremely relevant to understanding a lot of Generation Kill. The Marines in that show are Recon Marines and the bread and butter of 1st Recon is doing what the Seals were doing here. But for the Iraq invasion, the Marine Corps sent 1st Recon Battalion out in a humvees in front of the whole division. So a lot of what you are watching there has to do with misuse of assets and the lack of supplies are because were trained primarily to do a whole different mission than what they got sent on. If you remember in one episode, one of the Recon Marines sketches the scene similar to here in Lone Survivor.
It all boils down to force recon being special operations capable not special operations force so they still fall under command of the Marines and get their missions instead of SOCOM and their missions with the seals, delta, raiders, etc.
I've met Marcus. It was at an Astros game in 2010 about 5 years after the events of this incident. Got an autograph on my copy of the book "Lone Survivor" and a photograph with him. It remains to this day, the best book I've ever read in my life. I have also shared my condolences and thanks to Michael Murphy's father on facebook which he replied to. He was so gracious and thanked me for remembering "his buddy boy".
There are so many things I would like to say, but 3 things especially.
1. The book is 10X better than the film and the film is pretty amazing.
2. The events as shown in the film actually doesn't do justice to much of the story. Marcus crawled something close to SEVEN MILES from the spot the battle took place to the pool Gulab found him.
3. Marcus crawled that far after sustaining the following injuries/wounds. 3 broken vertebra, multiple RPG/Grenade fragment wounds, shot in the back, shoulder torn out, knees destroyed, severe facial damage including a broken nose, broken pelvis, bit his tongue in half, destroyed thumb, serious skin abrasions on his back and legs, and to top it off a bacterial infection from drinking rancid water.
@Jay S. There are conflicting accounts. I'm just going by what we know sir. Three men on the ground and 16 in the helicopter died that day. One survived and the wounds described above occurred. 26:35 Still one of my favorite scenes, fictional or not. The villagers coming to protect him is such a powerful scene. Not all of them are Taliban. There were and are many of them who oppose the Taliban no matter the cost.
Yep. People forgot how popular anti-Taliban sentiment in Afghanistan really was, to the point where prior to the U.S Invasion, the Northern Alliance controlled the entire Northern Region of the country. It's a shame we left a client state to die. The Taliban didn't win the war because they had the support, they won the war because the Islamic Republic was too weak. Their government and military was too dependent on the United States, and as a result they just couldn't withstand the counteroffensive.
I feel that breathing sound bit so hard too. Not only from having a collapsed lung (twice) but also from having to watch a family member pass away while breathing like that (sorry for being so dark). It's a sound that stays with you forever and always manages to trigger
This movie makes me cry. It perfectly illustrates why we went to Afghanistan in the first place and how the government epically, like apocalypticly screwed up leaving. The people like the villagers who helped are now slaves and being killed because political officials being run by an old man with mush for brains was allowed to hold power. Sad.
Look up the details on John A. Chapman and his being awarded the Medal of Honor. He is another example of the tough warfighters that we have. His book is "Alone at Dawn". Well worth the read.
The Falling down the Mountain scene: Stunt Coordinators and Stunt Men were discussion how to do it, what safety precautions could be used, camera tricks etc, in the end on of the stunt guys decided to just pad up lightly and hauled himself down the slope. "sometimes the best way is to not overthink it and just go for it"
Not only is Lone Survivor an exceptional film , the soundtrack which featuring a collaboration between Texas post-rock band Explosions in the Sky and Steve Jablonsky is insanely great

I strongly recommend reading the book, it explains how real many of the scenes you saw, particularly the fall down the mountain, were. However, Marcus was far worse off than what was shown. He actually dragged himself for miles because his legs were broken. You should also check out the documentary Murph The Protector. It really explains how beloved Mike Murphy truly was. The movie is devastating to watch in general, but harder when you’ve read the book or seen Murph because they were very real people with real lives and families. Marcus was adamant about portraying how great his team was while minimizing what he endured. Thank you for this reaction, it is a great movie and helps people appreciate our military and their sacrifices.
This was filmed in New Mexico near where I grew up which has almost identical terrain to a lot of Afghanistan. A friend of a friend knows Marcus and I had the chance to go shooting with them here in Texas but I couldn't make it. Massive regret.
They also shot a lot it in Mountain High, California. About 30min from my house. I remember I was going camping while they were shooting the film, and they had a lot of the roads blocked off; at the time I didnt know they we're shooting this movie.
Peter Berg wanted to make sure that these combat scenes were so realistic that he had them reviewed by actual soldiers to make sure they were correct.
They did really well to capture how these men kept fighting with every but of warrior they have in them. Watch some of Marcus Luttrell's interviews and stuff. He is the real Seal that survived. He went back to combat after all of this when he recovered.
So from what I’ve heard from guys in the navy and read. Marcus tried to reveal any detail he legally could to make it the real thing. Like for example the guy they were after they didn’t use his real name in the movie because it was still a classified mission. He wasn’t found in a pond or given shelter with a roof he was kept by the villagers in a cave and yea that clean water bottle he drank out of. He actually drank out of a dirty coke bottle someone found with well water in it. Probably wasn’t much of a talker either because he bit off his tongue during the fall.
Dude, Friday Night Lights is probably my favorite movie of all time. I couldn’t even guess how many times I’ve watched it and I never get tired of it.

First of all I really enjoy your videos. I read the book first and the chapters on the Navy Seal BUDs training are so intense! They only touch on them in the opening credit sequence. Also their impossible choice on the mountain was gut wrenching. Give the book a tumble. You can see the real Marcus in the scene around the picnic table in the beginning scenes

From Marcus luttrell's 2 part speech, this movie is tame compared to the real events. An example would be Mat Axleson. Instead of being shot in the back of the head, he took a round to the side of the face. In Marcus's words, "The only thing I recognized on him was his bottom lip". Completely blinded, he patched his face with a pressure bandage, and continued to fight, doing so long after he and Marcus were separated. In total, he walked and crawled a total of 7 miles, unable to see, firing in the general direction of the enemy, until his ammunition finally ran dry.
Just that example puts into perspective the level of individual toughness and Grit that each man had. While its horrifying to think someone went through these events, it's also a source of inspiration for many people, myself included. If ever I have a bad day, I think about Red Wings. "Marcus had a worse day, and he's living his best life now. keep moving"
Read Marcus Luttrell's book on this incident and watch on online the TV interviews he did regarding this incident. Years after this movie a TV news program that did a story on how Marcus has had the villager who saved his life over at his big ranch at home in Texas at least twice to hang out and go shooting. Regarding the physical and mental resililiance of Navy SEALs in the movie, you see from the footage at the beginning how crazy difficult the training was and how very few candidates make it. Only a special breed of person can make the SEALs.
Just special breed of man because no women has ever made it and never will unless the wokeness makes it easier for equality’s sake which is likely to happen soon

I've never understood this... OPTION #4: Take them with you till you get comms, successfully call for extract, set extract point, & THEN LET THEM GO! It's always driven me crazy why no one suggests that. If you take them with you till you make comms, by the time they get back to the village & back up, you're gone! I know it's harder to think in those conditions, but if one guy had that idea in that moment, 19 special operators would've lived (3 with Luttrell & the 16 in the Chinook)! This is still my favorite movie/book/story of all time. These guys are the most badass, brave, & tough guys to ever walk the earth. We're so lucky that we have guys like these that choose to live through hell while training & in combat to fight for us & our freedom! Please never take these Heroes for granted! Thank you to everyone whose ever served in our military & SpecOps units!
4:42 if you guys don’t know, the guy with the beanie is who this movie is based on. He is the real “Lone Survivor” of Operation Red Wings. A team of four Navy SEALs, tasked for surveillance and reconnaissance of a group of structures known to be used by Shah and his men, fell into an ambush by Shah and his group just hours after inserting into the area by fast-roping from an MH-47 Chinook helicopter.[2] Three of the four SEALs were killed during the ensuing battle, and one of the two quick reaction force (QRF) helicopters sent in for their aid was shot down by an RPG-7 fired by Shah's insurgents, killing all eight U.S. Navy SEALs and all eight U.S. Army Special Operations aviators on board.
The operation then became known as Red Wings II and lasted approximately three more weeks, during which time the bodies of the killed SEALs and Army Special Operations aviators were recovered and the only surviving member of the initial SEAL team, Marcus Luttrell, was rescued.
That guy with the beanie, is Marcus Luttrell.
You also need to hear the speech with Marcus about the operation. Really powerful and astonishing story.

Have to remember, by the time Marcus got to the bottom. He had a shattered pelvis, broken femur and broken back. He was crawling feet at a time to get to the water he found. In an interview, Luttrell said it was the extreme thirst that ( among other things ) kept driving him forward.

Lived in Cupertino, California and they have a memorial for axe right there. And when you hear a collapsed lung or a torn up windpipe before you're dying we breathe like that. Trust me after facing that in reality even a person snoring will give you nightmares

Always crazy when you remember that this is a true story (I'm sure there are some parts of the narrative and events that have been exposed to creative license, but still)! What must that experience have been like?!

3. When I was going through Morse Code training I met a Seal doing his advanced training
and I shook his hand. It was like shanking hands with a statue. First thing through my head was,
"I'm glad he's on my team".
4. GOOF: Plot hole. From the shepherd boy to the first attack was far to quickly to be that organized
and armored.
I remember putting this on because I like the cast. I understood the title meant it was highly likely that all but 1 survived. But the brutal way it went about it I was not expecting.
"Shoot and move" at 16:01. Usually referred to as bounding overwatch. One element shoots while the other moves; the movement group gets set, and they become the over watch (shooting), so the other element can now move. In the army, we call this battle drill 3 or "breaking contact ".
If you like Peter berg you should watch patriots day and deep water horizon both directed by him and both starring mark whalberg. He does a really good job directing movies based on true events

Probably the most realistic injuries I have ever seen in a movie. I understand that the reconstruction of the events is quite real, since it was supervised while filming by Marcus himself, who also makes some cameos in the film, it is the boy with the beard and sunglasses. The director were also based on forensic reports, so each of the wounds these soldiers receive is as it was in the real battle.They have to react to more Peter Berg movies, I recommend from his filmography: Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon (these 2 movies also with Mark Wahlberg) and The Kingdom.

This movie was filmed in Santa Fe, NM. Just an FYI, that was the REAL Marcus Latrell (at marker 4:42) sitting at the picnic table with the beanie and sunglasses after Michael and Danny completed their race. You will also see Marcus in the MH-46 trying to rescue the 4-man recon team.

I'm Australian and turn 40 in August, and travelled through Texas in April 2001, first place randomly found the rebuilt Waco church, (Ironically i wanted to and did visit the Kennedy Museum) and then actually found a small town north in this community similar to the Luttrell's. Young guys looking for selection. I'd already solo-hiked through Oregon and Washington state, part fishing mixed with mac n cheese :) these guys are a way differnt level to my hippy skills. :P
I can only recommend all the movies in the, what I call, "Berg/Wahlberg based on true evens trilogy", consisting of "Lone Survivor", "Deepwater Horizon" and "Patriots Day". All three movies are great and worth watching. The latter two are even better than Lone Survivor in my opnion.
Marcus Lattrell was on Joe Roman's podcast not too long ago, you guys should definitely check it out. The real events were far more intense than what the movie portrayed. Great reaction
Unlike the movie portrays, they already knew they were there because they weren’t quiet about their landing. So killing them or letting them go would’ve have done anything
Tigerland, Buffalo Soldiers, Casualties of War are good war movies too. Couple aren’t actually in war.

Not only was he shot 12 times he jumped off the mountain 2 or 3 times(cant recall which of the 2 it was) and he broke his back and broke both of his legs.
After he broke his legs the other 3 guys had to carry or drag him from that point on.
This was a running battle for over 2 hours before 3 of the 4 were finally killed.
Marcus Luttrell brought that whole village and all the families to Texas where they all live near him and he said on a podcast they always go fishing.
And now imagine how they feel, the monsters who did that to them are now in charge with the blessing of the „commander in chief“

This came out while I was in Kandahar. I thought if Luttrell can get through all that, I can do a measly 8 months. The book is sad but very inspirational.
The SEAL training at the opening of this film is also depicted in American Sniper. Instead of a training montage, it's shown partially in that movie.

While I very much don't support our occupation of the middle east - I absolutely love this film. It definitely speaks to the resiliency of the human spirit, and that as long as you're still breathing you can't give up. I watched an interview with Marcus where among other things he talked about the injuries he sustained. He said they left a lot out of the film, one thing being that he spent weeks in the town recovering waiting to be rescured and continuing to fight off the Taliban - rather than a day. Most notably however was that his treak to that town.
He said he had broken his back in more than one place and couldn't actually walk - so he drew a line with a rock in the dirt and crawled to it and if he was still alive when his feet crossed the line he did it again. He said he did this for 7 miles.
Man o man did I love air assault missions. Especially in the dead of night while waiting for it to land. It's cold as hell in the bird. It's loud but quite as no one talks. You just stare at each other and say a prayer before you land. The good Ole days
