I definitely thought Schmitt was gonna say JA dancing on stage was the one scene he remembered from when he was 13 haha. Honestly I remember a LOT of it, but probably what most people remember the most is that one or the talking head scene. Mickey Rourke does a fantastic job too for sure! Yeah I wanted to mention that, when Samantha was mentioning afterward that Josh Hartnett seemed more disconnected from everything else compared to the rest being overlapping in many places. I guess they could've left it that way as a tone-setter for the main movie, but it's cool they brought him back around to bookend it.
Then sadly they did not keep the momentum since I remember they were supposed to do 2 more almost immidiatelly, but Robert went into the kids movie side while Miller was more so waiting for him. Then when they did do the second one it looked a bit off, which made it feel a bit off. Also just felt like not as much effort/heart was put into it. I was not that thrown off by the ages since Alba who is kinda the key with that somehow pulled that off, which is crazy. Still it would have been so nice to get a neat packed trilogy in like a span of 5 years. Dunkan having passed is what it is and the actor of Miho not wanting to do it anymore. I think Brolin was a miscast. They could've done it more graphig also I suppose, not as much safe-guards from studio most likely if did it back in the day. Depp was for a long time supposed to play the Joseph Gordon-Levitt part even tho I'm not mad at alll to whome it changed to. It was really the best part of the movie even tho the shortest.
Well it turned out that Frank Miller would end up directing 85% of the film. I thought imo it was terrible. It's like an awkward expression of the comic.
The scene where Clive Owen is driving with dead Jackie Boy in the car was the scene directed by Tarantino. The coloured lights on the black and white was his homage to the Dario Argento classic ‘Suspiria’.

He also co-wrote the third film with director Fred Dekker ("The Monster Squad"). Frank didn't have a great experience writing them. That's why he created Sin City.
It's sad noir genre is gone from the modern cinematography, Sin City is more like a parody on the noir than a noir itself, but it still looks, sounds and feels absolutely fantastic.
A Dame To Kill For was not as good, but i still really liked it. The Poker scene was fantastic and i loved Nancy Callahan’s sequel story. Pretty good sequel.
I don't understand what you mean by the noir genre is gone from modern cinematography. As in movies? There are still movies that implement the lighting and mood techniques through cinematography. I'd also say that the comic was inspired by noir and the film replicated that look. so it was comic inspired by the look of old movies and a newer movie using older techniques to inform the look of this movie. This is an anachronistic take on noir. Totally not trying to bag on you either. Just trying to connect with what you mean. Always wanting to talk movies and share. 🙏
Extended cut / directors cut For those that don't know, basically, the newer cut separates all of the stories from the movie, and adds more scenes to them. For example, you get the entire story of Nancy Callahan all up front without it being the first and last part of the theatrical cut. Once you are finished watching that segment, you'll get the credits, and then the next segment will start.
I don't know why, but I've always preferred the theatrical cut. Nothing wrong with the extended/director's cut, I guess I just like the nonlinear story telling.

This adapts 3 volumes of Sin City - 1 The Hard Goodbye (Marv & Goldie), 3 The Big Fat Kill (Dwight), and 4 That Yellow B@stard (Hartigan & Nancy) All 7 volumes are worth a read and I highly suggest seeking them out.
This movie gets all the style points. I recall when I first time I saw it I had a hard time focusing on the plot because my eyes were so lost in the visuals. You can nail the timeline down otherwise by keeping track of Nancy and her car through the chapters.
Johnny Depp is kind of highs-and-lows as both a person and an actor, but I put that one in the "stole the show" category, though EVERYONE is over the top there :)

Even though Batman had always been popular his Dark Knight Returns and Batman Year One comics (both have been adapted in to DC Animated Movies) pushed Batman into the stratosphere - it most likely enabled DC/Warner to make the 1989 Batman movie. Frank appears in this movie as the priest in the confessional booth. He also appears as a scientist in Robocop 2 which he wrote. Also The Spirit was directed by Frank Miller.

I would not have blamed Sam or any other adult at all for not liking it. I was in high school when this came out. I remember me and my buddy went and saw this at a midnight showing in an empty theater after a shift at his family's chinese restaurant. No, you're wrong. Josh Hartnett's character was paid by her to protect her, but he's actually a hit man. So he gets paid to kill her and also cashes the check he was given for protection.

Very few perfect translations of the source material like this have been done, you can either watch the movie or read the comic and its basically the same experience.
It is difficult to describe this brilliant adaptation without using the term "stylized". The noir aspects combined with great performances really pulls you in on every scene.
Dwight is my favorite character in this. The director's cut for this split the movie into four separate mini films. In my opinion, it's the superior version.

This film blew me away. I saw previews of it, thought it looked crazy, had to see it. After watching it, I went out to my car...thought about it...and went back to the theater, got another ticket and watched it again. A week later, I returned to see it a third time. I only watch movies in the theater three times if they're the first six Star Wars films...that's how much I was excited by this movie. The graphic style, the violence, the crazy stories, super hero like action...yeah, the acting isn't great or that might be some of the comic book style writing, not sure...but it was the visuals and filmography that sucked me in. Still love this film.
I remember working in a movie theater at the time. People walked out of the movie after the first scene. They wanted to see a Bruce Willis movie and thought he wasn't in the rest of it. Video store was fun too when renting out Planet Terror, people returning it thinking the picture quality was faulty. Fun times with Rodriguez films
Tarantino directed the scene in the car with Clive Owen and Benicio Del Toro. The rest of the film, Rodriguez directed the performances but relied on Miller's art to guide cinematography and blocking, effectively using the comic as storyboard. He considered that to make Miller co-director, invited him on set throughout filming, and consulted with him about creative decisions.
There are 7 Sin City graphic novels. The one with Josh Hartnett is from a short story called The Customer Is Always Right, which is part of the 6th novel called Booze, Broads and Bullets. The one with Marv (Mickey Rourke) is from the 1st novel The Hard Goodbye, the one with Dwight (Clive Owen) is from the 3rd novel The Big Fat Kill and the one with Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is from the 4th novel That Yellow Bastard.

Similar to Daniel, this movie was huge for me when I was a teen boy 😂 There is a sequel for this called Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Quality takes a dip, but it's out there if you two want to react to it!

My favorite element of this as soon as I saw the trailer was the fact Elijah Wood was Kevin. The meta casting contrast between him and Frodo is off the charts, the visual design of the character with the dramatic glasses is so striking, and his characterization and action scenes are so damn creepy/freaky! Had that sillhouette-with-glasses as an avatar pic somewhere for quite awhile :)
Somehow I knew that Samantha would really like this. Like 300, it was very faithful to Frank Miller's story and art from the comic series. It purposely has a very stylized, film noir, 1940s style of story-telling. BTW, that was Frank Miller that played the priest that Marv killed,

According to Frank Miller, Miho and Kevin are actually some sort of supernatural beings referring to them as "demons". With Kevin being the evil demon and Miho being the good demon. I always thought tht was interesting and it makes sense considering how otherworldly they both seem.
Rutger Hauer starred in one of my favorite medieval/fantasy movies, Ladyhawke! (Excalibur is another one) Britney Murphy voiced Luann in King Of The Hill! Michael Clarke Duncan had some great roles. I haven't seen anyone react to The Island. Frank Miller's Batman graphic novels were cool and the movie adaptations were faithful. Heard a rumour that he was working on a continuation but I haven't gotten any confirmation.
From Robert Rodriguez I'd recommend ALITA : BATTLE ANGEL - a deeply, deeply flawed tour-de-force. That's me, however : I love films that try even if, in part, they fail.

In my opinion, Sin City should be considered a comic book movie, not a noir movie.

At this point, anything outside actual noir films is either a parody or an homage mixed with something else. And that's okay.
Tarantino only directed one scene in the movie. The part where Dwight is in the car talking to a dead Jack.
Which he directed for $1, as a return favor to Robert Rodriguez for putting together the Kill Bill Vol. 2 score for $1.

This is still the best graphic novel adaption ever. The pages literally come to life.
Robert Rodriguez spent years courting Frank Miller to make this film. He finally got Frank into the studio to watch him make the opening scene with Josh Hartnett. Frank said, "this isn't right. You need (such and such)..." Rodriguez said "don't tell me, tell them !"
And that was how their partnership was born. Miller even played the part of the priest Marv killed in confession.
Tarantino paid Rodriguez back for an earlier favor by shooting the scene with dead Jackie in the car for the price of $1. Whilst on set he noticed the scene with Devon Aoki slicing up people with samurai swords. "Are those my Hanzo swords ?" Tarantino asked. "Yeah. Sorry. I borrowed them from your garage when you were not looking", said Rodriguez.

Miller is also a car nut and the vehicles in this product are all on his dream car list.
I've watched this movie many times, I *never* noticed that was Nick Offerman playing Schlubb...
schlubb reminded me of tony shalhoub who played Monk. nick offerman was in an ep around 2002.
I think the very last time I watched it I noticed it, then immediately forgot again until Samantha pointed it out haha. It's just SO not the context you expect him in :)

This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I went to see it because it came out on my 14th birthday and I had no idea what it was. I own some of the books and have genuinely been inspired to create art for over 30 years because of frank miller

Just a fun fact The first scene in this movie was filmed as a test screening and presented as a proof of concept to the studio to show how they wanted to film the movie as a graphic novel.
The actor who plays Cardinal Roark (Rutger Hauer) is in some really great movies for you two to check out. "Nighthawks", also starring Sylvester Stallone, and Billy Dee Williams. "The Hitcher", also starring C. Thomas Howell, and Jennifer Jason Lee. "Ladyhawke", also starring Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeiffer. "Bladerunner", also starring Harrison Ford and Daryl Hannah. "Surviving The Game", also starring Ice-T, Gary Busey, John C. McGinley, and Charles Dutton.
So many cool characters, but Josh Hartnett is so damn smooth, the opening is amazing. “I’ll cash a check in the morning” brrr

If you've never seen Lucky Number Slevin you should definitely! Hartnett at his best along with Bruce!
One of my favorite movies with Josh Hartnet that I always think of when I see this is Lucky Number Slevin. It's one of my favorite movies ever but it seems like no one has seen it. I would love to see you react to it. It's great for lovers of mysteries and thrillers.

Hartnet does a great job as a jealous manipulator in the movie O. It's based on Shakespeare's Othello.
Have you ever seen a trailer for it? I have no idea what they were thinking? It's one of the worst trailers I've ever seen compared to what the movie actually is!

Awesome reaction and Bruce Willis's story is the coolest one in my opinion, I love how he defeated Roark's son the same way he took him out at the beginning.

I didn’t notice until they pointed out that Bruce grabbed glass using his feet. Which is funny considering Die Hard.

I was in high school when this came out. I remember me and my buddy went and saw this at a midnight showing in an empty theater after a shift at his family's chinese restaurant. What a film, one of my favorite theater experiences in all my years. I was aware of the comics and yet I still had no idea the ride I was in for. Glad you guys enjoyed it!

No, you're wrong. Josh Hartnett's character was paid by her to protect her, but he's actually a hit man. So he gets paid to kill her and also cashes the check he was given for protection.
Not really....Her check as in cashing in the job....the hit. Doesn't mean at all it was her doing it herself.

The 1st girl killed at the beging by the hit man is in Robert Rodriguez film Planet Terror and she's also plays the lifeguard Wendy Peffercorn in the Sandlot
This movie is also tailored to a 30 yr old boy. Still love it at 50.
Benicio Del Toro is unironically great in this movie, playing most of his role by his head only 😂
Rourke Jr is played by Nick Stahl, who's also in The Man With No Face and Terminator 3, while the actor playing his dad, Powers Boothe, is also in Red Dawn, Tombstone and Area 51. Other notable performances in this include Carla Gugino, Rosario Dawson, Clive Owen and Tommy Flanagan
Powers Boothe plays an FBI agent in a really, really good suspense/thriller/horror film called, "Frailty"; which also stars the late Bill Paxton, and Matthew McConaughey. This film has a great storyline, and very well done. Kudos to Bill Paxton who also directed this movie!
Very few perfect translations of the source material like this have been done, you can either watch the movie or read the comic and its basically the same experience.
I've seen this film many, many times and never caught Offerman playing the role of Shlubb, that was a great eye from Samantha.

It is difficult to describe this brilliant adaptation without using the term "stylized". The noir aspects combined with great performances really pulls you in on every scene.
Dwight is my favorite character in this.
The director's cut for this split the movie into four separate mini films. In my opinion, it's the superior version.

This film blew me away. I saw previews of it, thought it looked crazy, had to see it. After watching it, I went out to my car...thought about it...and went back to the theater, got another ticket and watched it again. A week later, I returned to see it a third time. I only watch movies in the theater three times if they're the first six Star Wars films...that's how much I was excited by this movie. The graphic style, the violence, the crazy stories, super hero like action...yeah, the acting isn't great or that might be some of the comic book style writing, not sure...but it was the visuals and filmography that sucked me in. Still love this film.
I remember working in a movie theater at the time. People walked out of the movie after the first scene. They wanted to see a Bruce Willis movie and thought he wasn't in the rest of it. Video store was fun too when renting out Planet Terror, people returning it thinking the picture quality was faulty. Fun times with Rodriguez films

Tarantino directed the scene in the car with Clive Owen and Benicio Del Toro. The rest of the film, Rodriguez directed the performances but relied on Miller's art to guide cinematography and blocking, effectively using the comic as storyboard. He considered that to make Miller co-director, invited him on set throughout filming, and consulted with him about creative decisions.
There are 7 Sin City graphic novels. The one with Josh Hartnett is from a short story called The Customer Is Always Right, which is part of the 6th novel called Booze, Broads and Bullets. The one with Marv (Mickey Rourke) is from the 1st novel The Hard Goodbye, the one with Dwight (Clive Owen) is from the 3rd novel The Big Fat Kill and the one with Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is from the 4th novel That Yellow Bastard.
Desperado was the sequel, El mariachi is the 1st film, once upon a time in Mexico was the 3rd film from Rodriguez in that series. Nit picking I know. Sin city is a great choice. Thanks again for watching all these movies. It's a new way to enjoy them again

My favorite element of this as soon as I saw the trailer was the fact Elijah Wood was Kevin. The meta casting contrast between him and Frodo is off the charts, the visual design of the character with the dramatic glasses is so striking, and his characterization and action scenes are so damn creepy/freaky! Had that sillhouette-with-glasses as an avatar pic somewhere for quite awhile :)
You mentioned the movie "The Spirit" - that was written and directed by Frank Miller and based on a comic book character from the 1940's and 50's.

Somehow I knew that Samantha would really like this. Like 300, it was very faithful to Frank Miller's story and art from the comic series. It purposely has a very stylized, film noir, 1940s style of story-telling.

According to Frank Miller, Miho and Kevin are actually some sort of supernatural beings referring to them as "demons". With Kevin being the evil demon and Miho being the good demon. I always thought tht was interesting and it makes sense considering how otherworldly they both seem.
After watching this in the theater me and my friends went right back in to watch it again.
Such a great comic book movie, now I want to watch it again!

Frank Miller's Batman graphic novels were cool and the movie adaptations were faithful. Heard a rumour that he was working on a continuation but I haven't gotten any confirmation.
From Robert Rodriguez I'd recommend ALITA : BATTLE ANGEL - a deeply, deeply flawed tour-de-force. That's me, however : I love films that try even if, in part, they fail.
Agreed, although I would argue whether it delivered or not. Granted, timing of the release wasn't great (not unlike another of my personal favs, Dredd), but Cameron is planning on a sequel at some point.
