    Vacuum leak, power steering leak, donk wheels. No wonder Mr Regular didn't like the car, he needs to drive a sorted one.

      Do you honestly think that what Mr. Regular says about cars in his reviews is supposed to reflect their owners? You people have an odd habit of bashing on the owners that give Mr. Regular their keys, and by doing so providing Mr. Regular with content, and you with entertainment.
      If what Mr. R meant in the review, or any review, was aimed towards the owner, he wouldnt have any cars to review. Seriously, shame on you.

    • @Racin3
      @Racin3 6 лет назад +1

      But he does bash the car's owners in many ways, usually low or mid key. Majority of the time he bashes the culture of the car and it's owners. The people letting Mr. Regular review their cars, KNOW what they're getting into, especially if he really likes or dislikes the car, they fuckin watch this show every week.

    the big wheels have definitely affected the gearing on this car

    • @Lazarus7000
      @Lazarus7000 8 лет назад +37

      Big wheels like those are doubly worse in that the bring up the unsprung mass. Every part of the car, except the wheels, tires, and suspension components immediately connected to them, is supported by the springs. I get that people want to be fancy, but you can be fancy without making the car actively worse, which you do when you fit giant rims, "licorice strip" tires, and doing "lowriders" of various descriptions. The worst are the ones who run on too-tiny wheels with the wheels set like they really need an adjustment, except they do, and you'll go through parts like Benzedrine.

      Levi Betz the stock wheels are 15in. These are somewhere between 18in and 20in, meaning that the gearing is 20%-33% longer. A significant difference

  • @georgekeller6341

    The vacuum leak alone could account for the poor performance. From listening to the engine, I think ignition timing and other settings are also way off.

    I recently inherited my late father-in-laws 1983 944 5-spd. I had it completely serviced an independent Porsche shop, and my car has NONE of the issues described here. Even though it’s only 150hp, it’s happy to shift at 2500 rpm. My clutch used to grab way up at the top, but the service shop worked it’s black magic and it now grabs at the bottom which makes it a pleasure to drive.

    • @zloychechen5150
      @zloychechen5150 8 лет назад +3

      why would you gear it up in such a stupid way?
      i mean i get it, somw eheels look nice, but in my opinion, the only reason you go for bigger ones is if you need bigger brakes, which this thing doesn't.
      so you get a tiny bit more sluggish acceleration and scraping...
      that's the man's equivalent of high heels, despite them not helping the owner to get laid in any way i guess.

    • @emptyshirt
      @emptyshirt 8 лет назад +1

      I love the analogy to high heels. Say what you will about heels, but at least they serve a purpose bringing a short girl to eye level. Stupid rims are just stupid.

  • @mattheweburns

    The clutch pedal FEELS crazy at first, but I've never driven on a more forgiving clutch. I rented one on Turo and was scared to death to stall it in the owners driveway to make everyone nervous; however, I couldn't successfully stall the thing even on serious hills and over 300 miles!
    That and the accelerator is like nothingnothingnothingNOW it's doing something, then whaaaaa! Thanks for the video, cheers!

  • @heikkiremes5661
    @heikkiremes5661 8 лет назад +62

    Why put in big wheels without changing the chassis geometry? They just change the gearing and they scrape. Nice set of 15'' wheels would suffice. Dumb. I have awaited the death of this trend (now exacerbated by stancing) since it's inception, but it's not going away. I'm old. I was alive, when the Ferrari F40 blew everybody away with 17'' wheels.

    • @MuscleCarLover
      @MuscleCarLover 8 лет назад +3

      Exactly, you don't need big wheels to make an old car look good, just a nice design of wheel, like the Fuch wheels fitted to the Turbo Porsches of that era

  • @DJWhitetailfluff
    @DJWhitetailfluff 8 лет назад +8

    I was gonna say the bigger wheels and the fact that the owner of the car said the engine had a vacuum leak may have affected the performance of the car a bit. If everything was perfect and not changed from factory in any way I'm curious how it would perform then. May not be a fast car but now it's slower than it should be. Bigger tire sizes will do it every time.

    These cars were not particularly fast when new but they weren't bad. They were solid little sports cars with no little quirks that I recall. It sounds like this car has some issues that need some work before you could get a feel for what it really was.

    I've seen it mentioned before in comments, but Mr. Regular would really benefit from a track day / HPDE. It would really boost confidence and help cut down on some bad habits (crossing arms while steering, etc). Nobody at Jalopnik can hook him up with a track day? It would even make a good video series.

  • @jackmeoff2376
    @jackmeoff2376 8 лет назад +41

    That's not a proper 944. That's an abortion. The wheels alone give it an extra inch in clearance ( like the suspension blocks in post '75 MGB's) phone-dial wheels (or cookie-cutter Fuchs on pre 86's only) Helen Keller could carry momentum through corners in a 944... and that is their virtue. This review cemented the awesome comedic value of RCR, whilst demonstrating lack of automotive prowess.

    • @BlahBleeBlahBlah
      @BlahBleeBlahBlah 8 лет назад +18

      Jack Meoff no disrespect to the owner, but I completely agree... stop spending money on huge rims and tires and give the thing a good mechanical once over. Might be expensive but a car like this deserves it.

  • @Iamliftoff
    @Iamliftoff 8 лет назад +3

    Seriously, this car is not a good example of the N/A series of the 944, my 2.5 944 has a much tighter turn in and does not bog like that, I've power shifted in 2nd and 3rd and gotten wheel spin, that is one sketchy ass 944, sounds good though.

  • @AllianaCordova

    • @calebatwood7659
      @calebatwood7659 8 лет назад

      Everyone keeps commenting that this is a poor example of a 944. But I definitely agree with you. This car is the perfect example of front engine Porsches you actually see out on the road. 9/10 are hoopties. There's a reason why these cars are cheap as dirt on the used market. Most of them weren't well taken care of. And after repair costs, you'd be close to the price of used caymans.

    • @pivotguy196
      @pivotguy196 8 лет назад +3

      I have a 944 that I DD that is so much better sorted than this one because I spend my money on maintaining my car instead of 17" rims that slow it down.

    • @pivotguy196
      @pivotguy196 8 лет назад +3

      There are tons of shitty 944s on the market for 2-3k, which makes people think that's what the car is worth and that all of them are like that but that's not it. If you spend 5-6k on a nice NA or 13-14k on a nice turbo you will get a well sorted 944 that is fun to drive and not much of a pain to take care of at all. The problem is that people underpay and expect the car to be amazing when they paid nothing for it and put no work into it. a perfect 944 turbo would cost about as much as a crappy used cayman but I'd take the perfect 944 turbo every time over a base crappy used cayman with an IMS problem.

  • @AudioCrossingVideos
    @AudioCrossingVideos 8 лет назад +3

    I think the bigger wheels and tires the owner has on his 944 may be adversely affecting the gearing and acceleration. They seem to be much larger in overall diameter. I'm sure the acceleration would improve a bit if the stock overall diameter was retained. No, it wouldn't improve the large gaps between gears, but it would improve willingness to rev.

    I think if you got the opportunity to drive a properly sorted 944 (especially a turbo) you'd notice almost as much difference as with the stock DeLorean and the LS one. I'll agree that these aren't the best car Porsche ever built (they're a sight better than the 928) but this isn't the best example of one.

  • @944obscene
    @944obscene 8 лет назад +1

    I won't comment on whether or not the car was "broken" however, if you put 18 wheels on a Honda Civic its gears are going to get "longer" and there will be a larger RPM gap between shifts. Why wasn't this accounted for? I mean. If you're going to review the car, then take into account the things an owner does to alter the experience. They came with what.. 15's? Yeah, it's gonna feel sluggish.. Possibly not handle very well. OBVIOUSLY. It scraped going over ant hills...

  • @fredbobberts5753

    Fair is fair...the shift light at 4K should be used as the indicator to hit the accelerator, as peak torque is at 4250. You take it to about 5k or a bit more and shift and now you will be just before 4k again in that higher gear and ready for another gears pulling. You never use fifth in regular driving...maybe on the freeway. You use third and fourth constantly in an s, you need to be just on the car, flogging it. I owned a 944 turbo, great car, but I actually think I like the s more, for the sounds, and because you can really flog an s and it will respond, while if you flog a turbo it might not until it goes off at full boost and then it’s a handful.

    the drop in rpms could be indicative of a bad (or no) stepper motor, which keeps the rpms up for between shifts.

    The owner describing all the little ins and outs, is describing, almost word for word, exactly the same issues I had with my TT 300zx. Minus the scraping...that shit was terrible. Whyyyyy the not-to-spec wheels? :'(
    Matter of fact there wasn't a power steering leak on my Z either. Man, that porsche needs some mechanical work.

    Doing the "10 and 2" thing might help your spirited driving form....the "9 and 3" thing is because of air bag design, but it's really not ideal for spirited driving, especially with a stick. You can get away with it if you have floppy paddles I suppose, but you might find "10 and 2" easier when your making haste even though you risk hand damage if the air bag goes off.

    Revs dropping significantly could very well be explained by the vacuum leak.

    He's not wrong about any of this information. But these roads and this drive really didn't bring out any of the car.
    I've autocrossed mine, had it out for a lapping day and toured with a pro44 team on the west coast. We did nationals in Sonoma for the spec944 races.
    Why would you race these? Because if you have the money to build a Racecar and drive it for a whole season - you can do a 944 right.
    I wholeheartedly agree though - pretty rotten street car especially if it's been "changed"

      Yes both these guys not very sharp on 944 cars. Owner doesn't have car sorted out and lets someone drive car who is not a good shifter and clutch releaser! ALWAYS minimize clutch slippage when shifting with proper rev matching and reasonably solid engagement of clutch. If you already know the engine speed drops slower than you expect, wait for proper engagement and DON'T let the clutch make engine drop revs. The clutch will not last long the way he uses it. Don't drive my car like that. Peace.

      I noticed from beginning of video trying to pull out from edge of road and right away that area looked familiar like the area north of Reading, Pa. on US rt 61. That road very busy and please use caution by looking both ways well before entering. I live in Syracuse but grew up in that beautiful area down there.

      Alvaro Delgado the community is moderate but parts are expensive (it is a porsche after all). my friend has a martini wrapped 944 and slapped a supercharger in it and it is definitely fun

    If you want to try out a proper FR Porsche, find someone who has a 944T/S2 or 968 that is bone-stock and well-kept. These type of Porsches are best in stock form with performance tires.

      the written manual in the glove box for these cars has graphs showing the rpm versus speed.
      these cars are not made for acceleration runs from rest, try accelerating from 60mph(100kmh)
      they are geared for the autobahn
